- vd0man, on 10/12/2007, -6/+32It's not really a price drop. Sony's just not forcing you to buy all the extras anymore (memory stick, headphones, case, wrist strap). Of course, without a memory card you can't save any of your games or play any music or watch any movies. So you'll be dropping just about (shock!) $250 for a PSP and a Pro DUO Memory Stick (prices range from ~$25 for the 32MB ones to ~$100+ for the larger ones) if you actually want to USE it.
- diecastbeatdown, on 10/12/2007, -5/+24in canada, nobody can hear you scream.
- noliberalbull, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15I'm about to sell mine. I don't use it. The best games available are still Lumines which could be done on any system, and burnout which is done on every system. I'll keep my DS, Metroid Hunters is coming out tomorrow... and New SMB is out in couple months, but the PSP is just lacking to me in some way. So much potential, but really I know I'm never gonna use it enough.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11Memory sticks arnt too pricey...
Heres a 2gb for $85 http://dealnews.com/deals/San-Disk-2-GB-Memory-Stick-PRO-Duo-for-85-shipped-after-rebate/113079.html
and a 128 for $5:

Still I agree that 200 is a bit pricey, 150 would be nice. In my opinion I think that the DS is better because it is cheaper and has better games. - rockforever, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Its not forcing you to buy a small, 32 MB card, now you can save your money for the bigger fat cards.
- jonnyeh, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10Is it a coincidence that this is announced the same week that Tetris DS and Metroid Prime: Hunters are both being released for the Nintendo DS?
- bchang, on 10/12/2007, -7/+13In canada there already close to that there $270 CAD
- homeobocks, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8"Successful"? Sony's been /losing/ money on the PSP!
- TrainwreckX, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Sony announced today that that they will continue to expand their >succesful< PSP...
lol - o0joshua0o, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I've already got my hands on a copy of Metroid Prime Hunters and it's un-freaking-believable. There have been several huge improvements over the demo that came out with the debut of the DS, most noticeably in the controls. I hear the single-player mission is about as long as the original Metroid Prime for Gamecube! Now add in the fact that it has a bunch of online multiplayer modes, and you've got a true killer app on your hands.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -9/+13I like my profanity filter off - thanks.
- roguepirate, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7i agree with you there, 200 bucks isn't that much of a price drop, espicially since it was 250 to begin with. I would say 150 would be a really good price point for the PSP.
- DruSam, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4With $50 dollars saved you can easily buy a 1GB memory stick online.
- fani, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4WTF !? Thats it. I mean I love my PSP but c'mon. Its like just giving a free game. Sony is very cheap.
And considering it doesn't have some of the original's accessories this is utter crap. Its just like the original price if you add back those missing accessories.
I was considering gifting the PSP to my nephew but $250 is too much.
I was expecting it to become like $140 - $160 max. And bundle a big memory stick like 256MB at least. And reduce prices on the stupid memory sticks.
I don't see good news for the PS3 if Sony doesn't slash its prices. - LycoLoco, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Addicting as it may be, all it is is a portable PS2, and Sony knows this.
- vypergts, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Oh man a Katamari game for PSP...crap I'm going to have to get one now and it will pwn my life. :P
- Omega697, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Are you on crack? Better games on the PSP?
- muikano, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2People rip into the PSP because it never does any one thing good. It's suppose to be PMP but the software doesnt really like movies. It likes UMD--like we need another format. It's suppose to offer good gaming, but the game selection is as diverse as a non diverse analogy. The Sony Monster is so huge that they one hand stops the other. They DONT want to be successful. They dont want the PSP to have a huge following and popularize downloaded movie viewing even when the system excels at it. They aren't really a technology company any more. Just a conglomerate with a brand name. Which is fine, i guess. God knows i wont begrudge a man for his living. But it's one thing to win through being meritorious, and another thing to win through sheer ruthlessness.
And Sony does all these stupid marketing ***** all the time. Their pricing is never cheap. They offer discmans with a remote, and then PRETEND to slash prices but the product's remote is removed.
They do this with every product line despite any technological advances that make mass production cheaper. Their running on the goodwill they've garnered in the early 90's. It's not an infinite cookie jar, buddy. - eurotransient, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Amen to that. I'm not anti-PSP or anything, but I just can't justify that kinda loot when I can hardly find the time to play the DS games I already have. And with Tetris and Metroid Prime: Hunters out this week, the *last* thing I need is another portable system.
I'll take the plunge at $150. Seeya in a year. - sjk8990, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2No, a PS2 has games.
- serpentor, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6Most any retailer will give you 21-30 days to return/credit you the price difference if you still have the receipt.
- MartinBob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"It's not really a price drop. Sony's just not forcing you to buy all the extras anymore (memory stick, headphones, case, wrist strap). You're correct, when PSP was released in Japan it came in two versions, the standard pack and the value pack to give consumers two choices, and back then the standard version was estimated $180 US. While the consumer might save money buying it together versus buying seperately- Sony actually racks up money because the accessories cost little to produce. Thats what the value pack was the only version originally available in the US, because Sony wanted to regain some of their money lost on the PSP.
But this isn't about forcing- this helps 3rd party companies like Logitech and consumers that want better quality products too. If you're planning on buying a pair of $200+ headphones, a $230+ memory stick(4GB will be up to $250 at launch) and guarding your PSP in some $300+ bullet-proof case, I doubt you give a damn about the included accessories.
Whether or not it's a price drop, it still helps consumers and 3rd party companies alike. - redrighthand, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2What about the Rumour of 4 gigs of memory on a future PSP? do you think they would keep the price at $199.99 when that comes out? or have two tiers for with and without internal memory.
- blankman, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4still way too overpriced
- b4k4, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This is not a price drop at all. This is the same as the PSP standard pack that was available in every country EXCEPT the US from the first release of the PSP. Sony's just finally not forcing you to buy all the extra crap they didn't force the rest of the world to buy.
- battlefield1985, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'm just about to buy one myself, Can't wait!
- VanceMc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I have two kids who would love this product, but I went the DS route instead for two simple reasons: price and the types of games available. For my younger children, there simply wasn't enough content (yet) for the PSP. And I could get two players for the price of one PSP.
- adml_shake, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3"It has about the same amount of games as the DS, the only difference being that PSP officially has better games now that Daxter is out."
You have got to be kidding me, go to any store that sells either. You see ROWS of DS games and maybe a shelf or 2 of games for the PSP. The rest are all movies. That was the worst fan boy comment i've seen on here yet. - largobargo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Where is the proof? Are you sure you converted to dollars correctly?
- dogoon, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3yeah i agree
it pisses me off that now they drop the price and dont include all of the stupid things like the case and wrist band, when i bought it when it came with all that stuff. - kris2pe, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Executive Vice President and co-COO, Sony Computer Entertainment America. “This new price point demonstrates our ongoing commitment to provide the best entertainment experiences, at affordable prices.”
I sense something too off with this statement! I mean since when did Sony have an ongoing commitment to provice the best entertainment experience? So far since the root kit incident plus the delay of the PS3 bcoz they wanted to build an even stronger drm... is what? 4 my entertainment pleasure?
Then there's this additional statement that says "affordable prices"? Hmm lets see... OH yeah there's that very affordable Clie! I bought a UX50 five yrs ago, not only was it the most expensive pda back then. It was also the worst when you consider its battery life! Today its gathering piles of dust in my drawer!!!
Spare me the load of crap! The only reason why its now a $199 handheld device is bcoz no ones buying it! No games, mandatory firmwire download & UMD the list goes on & on! The only redeming factor 4 PSP is its thriving open source community which is also striving to survive from the additional security of firmwires make sure they stop it dead on its tracks! - somesthetic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1considering a used psp was $200 before, you'll probably be able to pick them up for $150 now.
I know its not as new and shiny, but your $50 is so goddamn important to you. - MartinBob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1""Successful"? Sony's been /losing/ money on the PSP!"
Just like any current console quality gaming system does at launch... And ofcourse, if they didn't gain profit off of it, we would all be complaining about an absurd pricepoint ($350+). - grendelwraith, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Ok try it like this. Sony drops 50$ on the cost of a PSP. Which means you can now buy a new PSP, game, and memory card for the same price.
As for the rest
1) Rootkit was by Sony BMG. Music execs are about the most vile of life forms on the planet. Deal with it. Every Music Company at that level is pretty much the same anyway. Step one rape artists, step two rape artists, step 3 ?, step 4 rape artists while spending the money they earned from you, to find more artists to rape.
2) Blue-Ray DRM for both movies and games had to be finalized before they could begin production. Only makes sense as otherwise we would hear "OMG I HAD TO UPDATE MY PS3 SONY IS THE SUXORZ". And I will take 25 to 50 GBs over 4 GB DVDs any day. One of the biggest reasons the PS2 sold so well at launch was the inclusion of a DVD player. With the PS3 it will be Blue Ray which so far we have not seen a player for less than 1000.
3) Homebrew on the PSP. I can play all my latest games and most emulated games off the memory card. Regardless of how possible it may be, playing backups of PSP games does not interest me. I would rather buy, own, and play the few games I want to have on the system (GTA:LCS is way too much fun with all my friends over wireless).
4) If you did not know that you were buying style over substance with the Clie', hate to say it but that one is on you. Sony licensed the palm tech to make products. Honestly Palm's as much as they could do SUCKED. If you really need all the things it is capable of doing you are better off with a nice portable laptop. - tombomb, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2The price isin't what made me buy a DS over a PSP. The games and ease of use (No loading times, Comfertable button layout) were the determing factors. Sony, in my opinion, Dosen't get mobile gaming.
- vr1000, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I just bought 2 DSs for my sons. I never realized what a great little device it was until I saw it in action and I was able to get them for $145 each in a bundle that included a DS, a game, and an accessory kit (car charger, case, screen protectors etc.) I like the PSP but its still too expensive, Sony won't really open it up to third party hacks and the memory stick is a huge rip off. Sony won't get me until its ~$150.
- MartinBob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Eh...I like the playstation, but I am not a big fan of Sony's devious economic tactics.
This is gonna be like the PS2 all over again. I wish they integrated a flash drive inside the thing like the xBox (the soon-to-come PS3 will have a 60GB).
Oh well..."
Devious economic tactics? They throw their money out of their pockets so that PSP can have a semi-acceptable pricepoint and yet you still must bitch? If I'm not mistaken, PS2 was released before GCN and Xbox, that's an acceptable reason to not have a harddrive included. None of the current consoles have a flash drive included(maybe you're thinking of memory cards?)
Selling the PSP for $190 means they don't make revenue off their accessories(which for some helped both Sony and the consumer at saving). - eridius, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4I don't know about the others, but Daxter is already out.
- nox4444, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Awesome i know a $50 price drop for most isn't THAT much but still for those of us without a job its good news :-D. This will definitely sway me towards buying one. I'll probably need at LEAST a 2 gig memory stick for it though hopefully i can get it for $85 like that link above says...and yes spammemucho, Need for Speed is UBER addicting :-)
- dolby, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Look I own daxter and that game rocks, I had dust collection on my psp now I can't put it down plus I getting Splinter Cell when that drops.
- sjk8990, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If colors weren't available it wouldn't matter to me, but if that option is available and there's a color I like, I would want it.
- h4lofourt33n, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Well, personally, while this is very tempting to buy (seeing as how they are making a katamari game for PSP) I'd still rather wait to see what version two is stocked with. Sony could easily pack in a 4-5gb micro drive, and sell it for $249. Just depends on how cheap Sony really is. As far as denouncing Sony entirely over the rootkit scandal, that's a tad extreme.
- grendelwraith, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Makes alot more sense to Drop PSP rev.1.0 to $199 then introduce PSP rev2.0 at $250.
- gi4d2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"The PSP system has also served as an important driver in retail sales, bringing in more than $1.6 billion as of calendar year 2005, more than both Xbox 360 and Nintendo DS combined."
somehow i dont think that this is true....... - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I wonder if this will affect the price of the GP2X? I hope so - because I really want one of those. But if the price is so close (within $30 now) - I dunno. (GP2X = $169 on Play-Asia.com)....
Maybe I should just wait and buy a UMPC? - Brutis, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1wow the psp is still overpriced, hooray for sony knowing nothing.
wait till the ps3 comes (long long time by the way) and you will see more overpricedness - oleeid, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1It was advertise in "VG" the biggest newspaper in norway. Yes im sure its correct. Actually its a little less.
- nox4444, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I guess your pretty much right muikano. Sony has become just a big brand name conglomerate whose name people trust more just because it says SONY. And as another format, well, what else is new. Sony makes a new format for every little device they make lol. But like I said before even though it lacks features and isn't too user friendly, it gives other companies (and/or Sony), the stepping stone to shape up to when it comes to wireless gaming/multimedia. It's a start at least. You don't make everything perfect the first time around. I really could care less about most PSP games anyway even though that's its sole purpose. Why buy a game for $50 that isn't TOO good of a game in the first place (excluding GTA and Need for Speed to name a few), when I could just download a couple movies, a bunch of songs and also a few SNES games for free :-)
- zarquon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Just get a 1.5 psp, 2gb duo. Grab a few iso's and you've more than made up for the cost of the psp.
- jermm, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1The psp is finaly getting some good games, and a price trop and tomorrow Tertis DS and Prime Hunters are cooming to the DS + the Light, good times to be a handheld gamer
