- Huze, on 10/12/2007, -2/+19PSM has always proven to be a reliable resource. They've been dropping hints the past 3 months that they've known something, but have been unable to make any sort of announcement until now (to coincide with the E3 timeframe). Granted, this should still be classified as a "rumor" since it doesn't come from Sony, but I think a $399 price point is a smart move.
Remember, this not about winning the "Playstation vs Nintendo vs XBOX" war...this is about winning the "Blu-Ray vs HD-DVD" war. If the price was notably higher than $399, it would likely hurt the adoption rate for Blu-Ray. - Durrok, on 10/12/2007, -4/+16Mod it and become undissapointed with it as it becomes the best media center you can buy.
- ViperDaimao, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13Oddly enough, the NES was also $199 when it was first released in 1986. http://www.classicgaming.com/museum/nes/
- Lumiras, on 10/12/2007, -4/+16Is this surprising to anyone? I mean, this info is practically written on the wall. Pre-Thanksgiving is the perfect time to launch a major consumer electronic device.
I'm not so sure about the $399 price tag, though. I think it will be about $450. Sony can charge the extra $50 over the 360 because it will be the new system - GoMe, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11Sony has specifically said there would be only one SKU.
- dykesat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10A $199 NES in 1986 would cost $340.89 in 2005 dollars
A $199 N64 in 1996 would cost $241.55 in 2005 dollars
A $199 GC in 2001 would cost $215.82 in 2005 dollars
A $50 N64 Game in 1996 would cost $60.69 in 2005 dollars
A $50 GC Game in 2001 would cost $54.23 in 2005 dollars
Like it or not, get ready for $60 games as they will quickly become the norm. If the gaming companies would've gradually adjusted the price of games over the last ten years I don't think so many people would have a hard time accepting the $60 price point.
Almost every valuable good or service is adjusted for inflation. Heck, even the small bags of potato chips are adjusted to have less chips in order to combat the increase in raw material prices and maintain the 99c price. So, here's the compromise: You get a higher price or less product.
Games are costing more to develop while the window for recouping the investment is shrinking. Get used to the $60 price tag. - spid3rfly, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10There were a few N64 games that were 60 bucks that I do recall.
- CapAmerica, on 10/12/2007, -16/+24So that means this xmas people will have a choice between;
Xbox360 Platinum for $299, Revolution for $199, or a PS3 for $399.
*yes I know all prices are still rumored*
Seems to me Sony is going to wind up being in the same place they put Sega back during the Playstation/Saturn war. Outlook not looking to good for Sony this time around. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+14Nobody has even seen one of their consoles running yet! All we get are Sony gimps saying how wonderful it will be, how great the games are and stuff like that. but even within Sony, a final console doesn't exist!
- deadbaby, on 10/12/2007, -6/+14A $100 price difference won't really impact sales. Bargin shoppers are going to pickup a PS2, Xbox1, DS or Revolution. High end shoppers are going to be buying consoles & games so they're talking $500+ for either the 360 or PS3. At that point an extra $100 is nothing. (esp. if it has a fancy BluRay drive)
- wwwaddedsavings, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11Huze, you make a good point. I would buy it for $400 just for the blu-ray.
- angelp, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11Considering you're getting a game console plus a Blu-Ray player....the price of $399 is excellent.
- grenz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7It all sounds reasonable but that is the main reason to take it with a boulder sized grain of salt. Something so innocuous usually comes from an official source. Its either an attempt to sell magazines or wishful thinking on some folks part. Interesting regardless though.
- ynggrsshppr, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Even the submitter of this article put "reveals" in quotation marks. This alone says that the submitter isn't sure if the source is reliable.
- samdu, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9It actually doesn't make any sense for Microsoft to drop the price of the 360 at the PS3's launch at all. The limiting factor for PS3 sales will be supply. That won't change regardless of the price of the 360. To put it another way, MS won't keep anyone from buying a PS3 this year by dropping the price of the 360. There won't be enough PS3s to satisfy demand, so why take a price hit on the 360? MS will, if they're smart, wait until next year sometime to drop the price of the 360 when there are plenty of machines from both companies in stores. That way the price is actually a factor.
- samdu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Also keep in mind that if games have been $50 for a decade then they haven't been keeping pace with inflation. $50 ten years ago is a LOT more than $50 now.
- Jangles, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7IF and it is a HUGE IF, Sony can get it out by November and at that price then they may have just narrowly missed a huge disaster in my opinion. This would be good news for the Sony camp I think.
- kramer3d, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8"The folks at Team Xbox have picked up the latest issue of PSM, also known as the Unofficial PlayStation Magazine"
I stopped reading right there. - anamanaman, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Sounds like a good ole rumor with some credability. I'm still guessing its going to go for 499.
- DDRSkata, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Pleasant surprises all around.
My friend told me today that he just put money down at EB Games for the PS3, and they told him they had just received the official release date of November 11. Take it with a grain of salt, obviously, but it fits with this news and what we'd already heard.
I'll probably buy a PS3 upon release, sell it, and buy another one when the stock increases. If I learned anything from XBOX360's launch, it was that. - fatalfury, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9$399 price tag? I dont think so, especially since it has a blue ray drive.
- ChileanGoD, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Hell with it!!... You know what.... I dont want sony to release the ps3 before its done. I would wait another year ... or maybe another... until they make sure its done. That the games look and feel exactly like the demos we all have seen. Once they put their console to market, its going to take another 5 years at least before another console shows up. So i say that they get this one right.
PS: I got this wild idea while writting this.... what if they are trying to put two RSX chips in Sli mode?.. Its made by Nvidia... Its not that crazy of an idea.... :).... - theprez, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4The Xbox 360 is awesome, but I'm looking forward to the PS3 as well. I don't understand why people who don't even plan on getting a PS3 have to unload a bunch of crap they don't know is true either. We won't know until an official announcement, but what the article claims seems reasonable enough.
- DubbleA, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7I will not accept any of this untill Sony or OPM (Official Playstation Magazine) tells me the price. I want the PS3 as bad as the next guy, but too many false stories have been all over the place on pricing, launch dates, etc.
- CaptanAwal, on 10/12/2007, -5/+9old and false
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8Not at all. They just didn't think Sony would be desperate enough to talke a $400-$500 loss on EVERY console sold!
- metacoola, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Uhh...Final Fantasy XI is about the only game going cross platform with Squeenix.
This seems really unlikely that they can make a blu ray drive thats less that 500 dollars while some are over 1000 right now? How come they have a giant 500 dollar secret???? If this is the price though, even though its not my favorite next gen console, it will probably win the console war. Although there is still a lot of things left to be learned in next gen. - dPmunky, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7dont get me wrong, i'm not saying MS wont drop the price but $100 bucks, no way!
- anonatron, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Hmm it is too bad that the store I work at is going to be allocated quite literally ONE ps3 per month.
- custom875, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Yea right. But if it does come out at 399 I would be the first in line.
- Chewie67, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Blah, blah, blah. Until Sony releases an official price and launch date, it's all speculation.
I want it, but I'm tired of being jerked around by "insider information" that ends up being bogus.
No digg. - seandaly, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Of course they're desperate enough @$60 per title for average games, if they dominate as they anticipate, they can take quite a hefty loss on the console and still end up in a nice position.
Sony is just worried about getting market penetration at this point. - bebop717, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Why should we believe THIS release date over the 3 dozen floating around the internet right now.
- trc0, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4When did digg become so full of fanyboys? The 360 has its pros and cons and the PS3 will as well. If you're so against Sony/Microsoft don't buy a PS3/360. Remember competition means consumers will profit.
- perry753, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5This makes sense... the PS3 will definitely be on my want-list.
- shiftless, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5I'm not going to get it until a year after it's released. I made the mistake of buying the PSP right away. Not making that same mistake again.
- Ollin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Sounds like a perfect time and a reasonable price imo :).............but it all depends on the games of course.
- fani, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3What line. You crazy man ?
Either you preorder 5 months in advance or wait till Spring 07.
There's no line. - Sniper, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Lines? Faulty Hardware?...I bought a PSP and there was NO line and NO faulty hardware.
- monkzero, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The companies can drop prices if they need to, because most of their money will come from peripherals. The info in the article seems possible.
- angelp, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6What buried comments are you talking about?
- LaughingDjinn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Actually it is HD-Dvd that is going to be the add-on the to 360, not Blue-Ray, and it is going to be an ADD ON, which means more $$, so while comparing the two systems, each for $399, your looking at I imagine (and this is a wild ass guess) around $150min for an HD-DVD drive add on. So even if Blue ray is going to be added (I have heard nothing for or against that) its going to be much more expensive to have the 360 be your new media center then the PS3, In theory of course
- SamboGT, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Finally. Some info. I'm glad to get the price thing cleared up. The price is very reasonable for the package. I think Microsoft may have some competition this holiday season. I'm not saying the X360 isn't good, but the competing price point puts Sony at a good place.
- ianjones, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I agree, when I bought my 360 I didn't have to wait around and it's given me no problems. The only advantage with waiting a while before purchasing is the price drop.
- dPmunky, on 10/12/2007, -14/+15i agree, WAYY too soon to be doing a $100 price drop
- kloud213, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1thats what gamefly is for... i always trade my games in anyways cuz im poor. to me there a very few games i like to own.(halo 2, Gran Turismo.... etc)
- Spastastic, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4I doubt sony being the most expensive console in comparision to the other two will have much effect on it's sells. 399 isn't TOO bad and the people who want a ps3, and I'm sure a lot of people do, are going to most likely still buy it. If it was going to be 500-600 dollars like originally rumored then maybe I agree they would suffer.
- Flooq, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That was just Bill Gates saying he'd like that from a business standpoint. I'd expect something from Bungie at E3 though, being a Microsoft studio they've no doubt had development kits for a while.
- custom875, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Done it before and ill do it again
- custom875, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1righto fani
