^ 1 year on all hardware (never had to invoke it, even my original Gameboy is still going strong) - slpmep, on 10/12/2007, -7/+42Thanks for the "Stupid Americans" comments ... we all appreciate your friendship.....
As a FYI, the cost of Warranty is always included within the product price. So if you want longer warranty, it's at a higher price.
This is why products cost more in some countries, like EU.
Also, we're not stupid in the US...... in case you missed it, the core chips inside of the
Xbox, the Wii and the PS3 are all IBM, a stupid American company....

* 90-Day Express Warranty. Subject to the terms and conditions of this Limited Warranty, Microsoft warrants to you only (the original purchaser), that under normal use and service the Xbox Product will substantially conform with the accompanying printed user instruction materials for a period of 90 days starting as of the date of your sales receipt (the "Warranty Period").
* Implied Warranty. You may also have an implied warranty and/or condition under the laws of some jurisdictions, which is hereby limited to the duration of the Warranty Period. Some jurisdictions do not allow limitations on how long an implied warranty or condition lasts, so the foregoing limitation may not apply to you.
As to any defects discovered after the Warranty Period, there is no warranty or condition of any kind. - masamunecyrus, on 10/12/2007, -10/+39@Diggtatorship:
Huh? I've never had a Nintendo console break, save for my NES -- the connector broke because it's the classic NES (i.e., not the top-loading one) and, as we all know, metal tends to break after being bent thousands of times over and over again. Aside from that, though (which is easily fixable with the purchase of a small part), I've never had a Nintendo console go bad. Ever. And I always get the first-off-the-line units. - ponk, on 10/12/2007, -5/+31Here in UK its law that all electrical's must come with a 1 year warranty
- HappyScrappy, on 10/12/2007, -5/+30My GBA died on the first day I had it. So even Nintendo has stuff go bad.
My 360 died last week, after just under a year of use. MS had recently extended the warranty for the units built in 2005 (mine was October 14th, 2005) because they were having quality problems. I still have to pay shipping and wait 8-10 working days before I can play Gears of War. - Diggtatorship, on 10/12/2007, -27/+47Nintendo has always done a 1 year warranty, so your claim is a little off there.
- Splitt3rxx, on 10/12/2007, -7/+27not really anything special... nintendo has always had a 1 year warranty.
- scratched, on 10/12/2007, -7/+26I had a gamecube of mine go bad and it kept getting DREs.
It got so bad I had to buy a new one. Of course a few months after I bought the new one I found a HOWTO on how to re-calibrate the laser to fix the old one, but "fixing" it only lasted a few weeks.
Apparently Gamecube had a problem with a pretty big number of their units getting DREs. I'm sure they've fixed the problem with the Wii, I'm just disappointed about what happened to my gamecube. Every other nintendo console I've ever owned has been flawless though :D - psbpv3o, on 10/12/2007, -3/+22"not really anything special... nintendo has always had a 1 year warranty."
But sony hasn't. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -20/+38My Xbox 360 has a one year warranty. I've had it for just under a year and I've just sent it, free of charge, for repairs.
Stupid Americans need to get their laws sorted out - in some EU countries it is illegal not to supply hardware like this with less than a 3 YEAR warranty. - FrankieB078, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16All joking aside, I plan on buying a PS3 and not the other systems, but it better come with a 1 yr warranty for $600.
- andyvanhout, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12This is actually Sony's standard warranty now on the PSP and the most recent PS2 models, so it comes as no surprise to me that the same type of warranty applies to the PS3.
http://www.us.playstation.com/Support/Warranties
As you can see, the Playstation, PS one, and older PS2 models only had a 90 day warranty. Sony has since changed it's warranty policy for newer hardware for whatever reason. - mywhitenoise, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15hmm, a company who's losing $200 a console on launch, over one that's selling an upgraded gamecube for a greater profit. They could have easliy charged $200 for the Wii, probably even $150.
No company is your friend, they all want your money. You're a ***** nut if you honestly believe Nintendo (in terms of business) is any better than Sony. - jtbndy, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14Yeah, one of the biggest electronics producers in the world is going out of business because of their warranty on a product. Grow a brain maybe?
- triplehelix, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12@NikoKun
nintendo's business ethics? maybe you need a refresher:
"especially one that's been fined by the EU and the USA over their business practices. People forget that when Nintendo used to dominate the game industry, they tried to kill multi-platform gaming (if you wanted your game on the NES at all, it couldn't appear elsewhere for two freaking years) and were just plain abusive toward the American retailers who sold their games. "
its point #5 on this link:
http://www.pointlesswasteoftime.com/games/fanboy.html and it links to two references of the US and EU news stories.
sony's missteps are just slightly more recent but nintendo is far from sin free. - gcnaddict, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11"Then after I got a new one, the second one broke from a 2ft fall."
A 2 ft fall will ***** most (if not all) sensitive optical equipment. Guess what that red laser in your gamecube is? - grapeape25, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13I live in Canada and I got a 1 year warranty on my Xbox 360 as well...
- shiftless, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11You wind up paying extra for that, but whatever.
- HappyScrappy, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11I live in the US and am awaiting an Xbox 360 shipping box so I can send my 360 back for repair (died a couple days ago). MS extended the warranty on the early 360s built due to quality problems. I have to pay shipping to them, which I bitched about a lot.
I don't really need a 3 year warranty on many things. Like a hard drive? I'd rather buy a new one anyway. I don't see government intervention here as a good thing, personally.
You know what the best warranty is? The one you never need to use. - dopyoman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8In Europe its a 2 year minimum not 3.
- ToeCheese, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7@NikoKun
"nintendo's business ethics?"
Read up on why Namco and Square jumped ship and sided with Sony and how Sony got screwed over by Nintendo.
- Square got screwed over the Super Mario RPG development
Namco's story was worst. No one wanted to develop for the NES and Nintendo begged and gave discounts on developer fees to Namco so they would port their arcade titles. After Namco helped NES and everyone was begging to develop for it. Nintendo Pres. jacked up Namco's fees. Since there weren't any viable competitors yet. Namco dealt with it. When Nintendo screwed Sony by pulling out of their joint venture of a CD player for the NES and went with the Phillips CD-i. Sony developed the PS1 and Namco got an exclusive contract... Anyone remember "Powered by Namco" on the box of every PS-1 for the first few years. - Gundam, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Or perhaps since it came out in Japan people are getting their hands on them and the word is good so far.
- bmson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I think you misunderstood freedom.
In my opinion freedom is to protect the people, not the companies.
warranty's are to protects the customer, I don't want to buy PS3 for 50.000 ISK and when I get home, it would brake on me. - b04155, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9There's an old gameboy on display at the Nintendo store at Rock Center, it was heavily damaged (burned, melted, etc) from a bomb during the 1st Gulf War. It still plays its games perfectly.
- zetsurin, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8A lot of kids on here act like they have some kind of bossom buddies type relationship with Shigeru Miyamoto. It's quite sick really.
- HappyScrappy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7My early Gamecube gives DREs in Metroid Prime 2. It still mostly works though, and I can't afford to replace it since it has the progressive video connector on the back, and I use it.
- mywhitenoise, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6doesn't it make more sense that a good product has a warranty because they wont have to replace it?
- slasherx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Hopefully it's nothing like the 6 xbox 360's I've gone through and I don't need any warranty work.
- Brew, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5If only my 360 had a 1 year warranty :(. But way to got Sony for stepping up and giving a console a warranty like it should have for a computer.
- zetsurin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6"I expect more than a year warranty on a $600 game console"
By your logic you'd expect a 200 year warranty on your car.
How long is the warranty on the $350 80GB iPod?
Check out that minimal price difference between the PS3 and the listed iPod, and the latter just plays music. Add an extra $150 and look at everything else you can do for ***** sake. I bet you'll drop $100 on a pair of jeans just for a brand tag as well. - zetsurin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Yet another previous Digg hate topic destroyed.
Thank God I didn't listen to all the Digg pre-launch FUD and insecure banter and got myself a 60GB unit from Nagoya.
Only a fool would let a bunch of 10 year olds on a social news site influence their purchasing decisions. - dexim, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9"Americans don't like to have restrtictions and pointless laws put on EVERYTHING"
Yeah, because here in America, we don't have *ANY* stupid or pointless laws. - freff, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5So, how do you like working at Circuit City Mr. Jedi?
- fofusion, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5In the UK everything pretty much comes with a 1 year warranty.
- zetsurin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I have both a fully functioning PS1 and PS2. Both bought at their respective launches and both continue to work flawlessly. Not a single problem between them in over a decade of combined use.
- angelp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4@mywhitenoise - Why do I get the feeling that you think Europe consists of one country?
- shredswithpiks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4"I still have to pay shipping... "
Where do you live? I had one of the extended 2005 warranty fixes and they covered shipping in full (US).
Anyway... 1 year warranty kicks the crap out of 30 days warranty (which is just nonsense). - vdubski, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I know people think that the PS3 will have quality problems because the PS2 had so many. But I think a lot of it has to do with the way people take care of their things.
I got my PS2 one month after they were released and it is still going strong to this day. I always take good care of my things and I think this is partly why it is still working fine.
I took it apart and cleaned it once. But only because I was interested in what was inside, not because it was malfunctioning. - eyelessfade, on 10/12/2007, -7/+10Pff. One year. Here in Norway it is 3 years warranty by law. If it was more expensive it would be 5.
- solarisom, on 10/12/2007, -10/+13Looks like digg is trying to make up for talking trash about Sony the week before the PS3 launch.
- andy101, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5ATTENTION: THE PEOPLE WHO CARE ABOUT YOUR COUNTRY, DAVIDMACKEY, PROBABLY THINK IT'S STUPID
- tavisjohn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3"My Gamecube has broken twice
First, my GC couldn't read any of my games.
Then after I got a new one, the second one broke from a 2ft fall.
My GBASP also broke when it fell from my hand and hit the concrete. Only 1/2 of the screen showed up after that.
So I don't really believe Nintendo's products have any more quality then the other 2."
The warranty is notabout to cover 2ft or greater falls. So that is not a design flaw, or a manafacturing flaw, it is a user flaw. I still have the FIRST gameboy made, and it runs fine! I revently gave my mom my old Gameboy Color. I installed a front light into my first GBA and it still runs flawlessly. My GBASP has never given me any problems. My Nintendo DS works perfectly! My GameCube has not givin me any problems at all. the secret to my sucess? I protect my gear! My GBASP, DS, and GameCube are all stored in metal storage cases when I am not using them.
Every other console I have still works! Except for the first Atari 2600, it died after more than 20 years of heavy use, and I had to replace it. - veleb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"you guys have to pay a ***** of money on EVERYTHING."
How much do you pay for university education? Or public city transport? Or in case you are hit by a car and need 10 operations to get back to life? Or in case you need an appendectomy.
It's a matter of preferences. We pay more for something and pay less (or nothing - like university in my case) for other things.
I'm living in a EU country that has 2 years warranty for almost everything. - hbuswell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Actually it's demanded by the EU that all electrical products sold within it's territories carry *at least* a one year warranty; one year is nothing to be excited about especially since so many countries get it as standard.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7But i guess a console that costs $500 can have one thats under a year
- bmson, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3in some countries (mostly Nordic countries) 2 years warranty is obligated for electric devices.
So PS3 will have at least 2 years warranty in some countries - apoc06, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2ditto, i have launch versions of the PS1 and PS2. my launch PSP works fine, no dead pixels or any of the major problems the internet seems to blow out of proportion. all of my consoles still work. even my old nintendo works like new [minus the cartridge blowing]
my xbox has DREs, and my original gameboy clunked out after about a year. other than those two and an old laptop, none of my electronics have given me problems, ever.
an extended warranty is a sign of the pride a company takes in its product. there are 220 million devices out there with the playstation logo attached to them. there are bound to be defects. when you are dealling with that many products, even a 1 percent failure rate equals out to 2 million plus returns. for sony to give out a longer warranty, they must feel confident that they wont receive that many returns. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'm going to get the PRP anyway.
I have it for my Xbox 360 and already on my third Xbox -
