Me fail English... - sych0, on 10/12/2007, -4/+65$200 is a reasonable christmas gift for kids, at least it was when I was a kid. Of course it was the main thing I got. $600 on the other hand is just spoiling. Parents shouldnt have to take out a second morgage on the house for a game console.
- chatwithaninja, on 10/12/2007, -7/+62While alot of gamers might get the PS3, the Wii is going to dominate christmas this year. I'll be getting one for the kids... and I might play it some too... ha.
- MatttK, on 10/12/2007, -6/+60Buying a $200 Christmas present is within the realm of reality. Buying a $600 Christmas present is nuts. (sorry.. replied at the same time!)
- sych0, on 10/12/2007, -3/+43based on the parents alone, whos buying a ps3 for their kids?
- Ireland, on 10/12/2007, -9/+41I'm so sick of all the wars going on!! I'm glad there no oil inside these machines.
- CBanga, on 10/12/2007, -0/+19Famitsu is the Japanese equiliant to EGM. If EGM put out an issue stating the Wii will win the next-gen race, people would flock to the system.
- millixaw, on 10/12/2007, -3/+20"While alot of gamers might get the PS3, the Wii is going to dominate christmas this year. I'll be getting one for the kids... and I might play it some too... ha."
I'm 23 and I don't have any kids. I'll be getting a Wii though, for MYSELF!! - tsupersonic, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18Haha, yes. I want to see Sony fail with the PS3, the Wii is the next gen. console I'm looking forward to as well. I might even pair that up with a 360 just to take advantage of my new hdtv. Anything to see Sony fail and also Blu-ray. Sorry sony, it's just your turn to lose this generation.
- strictnein, on 10/12/2007, -12/+28Why does it seem that more and more people can't quite grasp than when you refer to a country, a company, or some other group made up of multiple people you refer to it in the singular form?
Japan has decided.
IBM is hiring.
The NRA likes guns. - aitf311, on 10/12/2007, -5/+21both of them can show the value of hard work, it will just take a LOT more hard work for any kid to "earn" a PS3!
- Jonny5alive, on 10/12/2007, -7/+23Famitsu is not a nintendo magazine....
- Never, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16Sorry about the headline, it was originaly "The Japanese Have Decided", but changed my mind and shortened it quick to "Japan" and thus have forgotten to change "Have" to "Has". Just hate it when we always try to be the first to post in Digg... My bad!!
- bnoj13, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15I'm 15 and my parents at most would buy me a Wii as my only gift for Christmas...they did that with the Gamecube a few years back, my only gifts after the Gamecube were a few pairs of socks and other random clothes.
I'm basically saving up money now to splurge on a DS lite with as many games as possible for the summer, and then I'll buy myself a Wii and just ask for some games for Christmas.
My parents would disown me before they bought me a PS3 for Christmas..not that I would really want one anyway. - tsupersonic, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17What about Playstation 2 vs. Gamecube?
- MatttK, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15And Playstation vs. N64..
- thewebguy, on 10/12/2007, -5/+19all my british friends refer to bands using plural, all my american friends use singular
me: hawthorne heights is so lame
english chris: panic! at the disco are crap - Karmakin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13Oh dear. This isn't good for Sony at ALL. Before E3, Famitsu had a very similar poll, what people were waiting for at E3. The top 10 was dominated by Sony news. In a similar poll, most people were waiting for a PS3. After E3? It's all Wii.
Here's the reality of the situation. If Nintendo is able to sell out their initial shipments of the Wii (which is looking not just possible, but likely), even if Sony is able to sell out their shipment, Nintendo will have about a 2-1 advantage in installed base. Depending on how spring goes, and if Sony is unable to turn it around, at E3 next year, you'll probably see a lot more titles announced for the Wii and the 360 (Which already has about a 7m installed base) than the PS3.
Sony won the current generation on the strength of huge 3rd party support. If that 3rd party support goes elsewhere, Sony probably will be in big trouble.
Maybe Sony should drop the PS3 platform and bring out their big games for the Wii/360? :) - gweedo767, on 10/12/2007, -4/+17Lets see. My daughter is 4 months old right now. If I wanted to get a console this holiday season for myself that when she is 3-5 she can play with with....Wii. It is great for me since the games look amazingly fun. And when she is old enough to play, she can jump right in with the kids games that are sure to come.
- cjmemay, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14"How many people do you think bought there kids Xbox 360 for Christmas? With 2 games maybe? Thats already more than the lower priced PS3, and thats only one gift, I know many people who have got there kids a lot more on top of that."
Actually that's 3 gifts. And those kids are spoiled, and will probably grow up to be yuppies. - matts0344, on 10/12/2007, -24/+37"Anyone who buys a PS3 for their kids is not doing them any favour in the valuing hard work department."
And buying them a Wii is? - o0joshua0o, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15After Sony's showing at E3 this year, and all of their recent fiascos (rootkits, copycatting, price-gouging, going after 2nd hand games market, etc), I'm actually not surprised. Sony is being managed horribly these days.
- MatttK, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15Okay, Square, please take note of this and switch Final Fantasy back to Nintendo, kthx. :)
(I really don't care about the FMV, so PS3/360's power is not needed for FF) - djdole, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12@dugdig - "What about buying your kid a desktop or laptop? Although you could make them do monotonous data entry for you."
Don't buy your kid his/her own computer.
Buy one for the ENTIRE family, that the kid is merely lucky enough to use.
If a kid learns how to use a computer, then at least they've covered one common thing many employers look for. Nearly nil employers care if you can play with a Wii, PS3, xBox or other console.
Besides, there are to many spoiled brat kids today. Why add to their entitlement complex?
Buy the family the computer, and make the kids work and save up for their own expensive console.
(See how much they actually really want it.) - Karmakin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12Bubble Bobble? Simple?
It's a surprisingly complex game. It's one of the few arcade classics that really has stood the test of time. - cypresso, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11I think a lot of it for Americans are going to be changing from their brand loyal standpoints on this issue (I'm a PS2 guy or she's all about the XBOX) basing a lot of their decision off of financials. The XBOX 360, although extremely high in demand, was the first to come out in the next-generation wars, making it a high demand item. It is not surprising to see how well it sold, even with a million bug-reports, chopped up disks, and few games.
However, many people held out for the PS3. And those that did definitely got a sour taste in their mouth when they heard the price was even more exorbitant than the XBOX 360. The Wii is a good alternative to both high-priced systems due to its cost and interesting features (controller/nunchuk) even though it is destined to lose the graphics wars. - Azuroth, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13"That comma is completely subjective. It was not required in my sentence; it could have been used with or without. I chose to use it without. Besides, I wasn't correcting grammar, I was simply adding to the conversation."
The comma wasn't the point of the correction, "You're right but there's times when..." -> "You're right but there ARE times when..." - Fabozz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10"What about buying your kid a desktop or laptop? Although you could make them do monotonous data entry for you."
I make my kids farm WoW mats for me. "No more gruel until you get another Larval Acid!" - backasswards, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12Nice grammar on the title. "Japan Have Decided?" "Has decided" sounds a little less Engrish and a little more English.
- dallen, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10So as long as it's a different division of the company screwing us, it's ok to keep giving them money?
- terminalpariah, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Nah, I'm pretty sure Nintendo is owning the handheld market because they're not charging $300, their batteries last longer than 2 hours and the games don't have insane load times.
Oh, and they make the best software. - alexkorova, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9@Rickler
Well, that yen price is the maximum they will sell it for, and (almost) every Nintendo console has been sold for 200 buckaroos when launched in the US, why would they change that? - PDAIsAOk, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10The playstation name hasnt been enough for it to beat Nintendo in the handheld market. Looks like it might not be enough to beat them this time around in the console market either.
- cmiller1, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11nnonix: That's a fantastic idea! Why have I never thought of that? Just a simple spelling/grammar test that you have to take to sign up for something, it would be fantastic for forums!
- cbreaker, on 10/12/2007, -9/+17You're right but there's times when you don't use the singular form. For instance, if I say "Japan" then yes, "Japan has won" is appropriate. If I say "The Japanese" on the other hand, which is still a group, I'd use "The Japanese have won." This is why stuff like this is used incorrectly all the time by people learning English as a second language. The original poster, on the other hand, is probably a kid in High School so there's no excuse =)
- televisible, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9What Fanbase?? If there is really Nintendo fanbase, gamecube would not had lost its market. I am tired of fanboy name calling. I like what the Wii offering and its price, and it does not matter who the hell is making the wii game console.
- tlfillingim, on 10/12/2007, -9/+17While we're correcting grammar around singular vs. plural:
"You're right but there's times when..." -> "You're right, but there are times when..." - adml_shake, on 10/12/2007, -7/+15""Buying a $200 Christmas present is within the realm of reality. Buying a $600 Christmas present is nuts. (sorry.. replied at the same time!)"
How many people do you think bought there kids Xbox 360 for Christmas? With 2 games maybe? Thats already more than the lower priced PS3, and thats only one gift, I know many people who have got there kids a lot more on top of that.
Buying a kid an Xbox 360, a Wii, or a PS3 for Christmas is not out of reality for many people. You guys are crazy if you think PS3 will not sell this winter."
Were not saying it won't sell. Of course they will move SOME of their units, but if you think they are going to sell in the numbers sony is expecting or that people will be beating eachother senseless to get them think again. You buy the system for 600 bucks, a few games, your up to 720 or 780, another controler now your talking about almost 800 dollars. A parent is goning to see that and freak the hell out. the wii and the 360 suddenly look a hell of a lot better seeing as you get a whole lot more bang for you buck with those three systems, and a ***** ton more games for what you would spend to get a ps3 and a few games. - gabebear, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Nintendo has always owned the handheld market, Nintendo's name in the hand-held market is like their name was in the console market in the 80s.
The console and handheld markets are two very different beasts. - bluon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7While I am excited about the Wii too, Japanese interests don't necessarily translate over to US interests. Take a look at the "top 20 announcements" listed in the article. Not a single Xbox 360 reference. Xbox had some pretty cool stuff going on at E3 considering they were not launching a new game system. So I wouldn't read too much into this. The US will be different.
- MatttK, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8They'll just have a hardcore, high-specced console..... that breaks down after a few months. I have no faith in Sony's hardware after the PS2. My brother went through THREE PS2s... thank god for the EB warranty.
- millixaw, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8"Rookit=Different division of Sony."
Is that so? Because Sony Computer Entertainment started off as an off-shoot of Sony Music. - Never, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Sorry about the headline, it was originally "The Japanese Have Decided", but changed my mind and shortened it quick to "Japan" and thus have forgotten to change "Have" to "Has". Just hate it when we always try to be the first to post in Digg... My bad!!
- dallen, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9If Square leaves Sony for Nintendo, they are done. Nintendo would own the Japanese market, and I have a feeling Sony is already going to have a hard time not finishing 3rd in America
- mercatfat, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8"Well, there you have it. Readers from some Japanese magazine I've never heard of have decided who will win. Why bother even buying a console? Thanks for doing all the work for us..."
You're reading Digg and you've never heard of Famitsu. Preposterous. Marked as silly. - johndi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6My parents made us buy our own video game systems. It taught us the value of the dollar, that you have to work to get money, and we had to work together. We would have to figure out how to earn the money because our allowance wasn't even close to enough. If that was the case today the Sony wouldn't even be considered, it just costs too much. especially when you consider how many games you could buy for the likely $350 difference in price.
- wilf_brim, on 10/12/2007, -7/+13I really don't know who will "win" in Japan, Nintendo vs Sony. Remember, right now we really don't know how well the Wii (I hate that name, btw) will play, especially over a long period of time. Waving your arms around like somebody having a seizure whilst standing in front of a TV may be fun for 10 minutes at E3, but how will it be once you can do that any time at home? I wonder if the "pretend to go fishing" won't get old after a while, when you realize that (once you take away the "gee this is cool" factor, you are just, well, being bored waiting for a fish.
The only safe thing to say is that MS is out of the picture in Japan. Launching early there, with so many consoles was a marketing error of the highest degree. They were never going to go big for it, so MS wasted a ton of money on promotion and advertising, and there are tens of thousands of consoles gathering dust on the shelves. Consoles, BTW, that could have sold at a premium in the US or European markets. Stupid. - vhold, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6For me, it will boil down to whether or not the controls feel smooth and responsive and really add a new intuitive challenge that I can keep getting better at.
That's why the E3 tennis demo looked so poor to me. It seemed like the players on screen were just performing the same few generic swings over and over based on simply doing a few generic swings with the wii-mote. Also the Red Steel demo looked to have a similar situation with it's sword play.
If there isn't subtlety in the remote use, and instead is used as a kind of macro input in a lot of games, I think it's going to have that gimmicky feel you describe.
Wario Ware looked to me to be one of the best demos because of the fact it was very analog with it's use of the remote, with things rotating, moving around in space, etc. - Mudhoney, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I'm pretty sure playstation has been a lot more popular than the competition in Japan. Nintendo does well there also but hasn't been #1.
