- dimatt, on 10/12/2007, -8/+95I hope they dont expect you to buy a 70 game and another controller along with that :|
- pr0t0, on 10/12/2007, -12/+90
I'm trying to figure out in how many languages I can say "no fracking way". And after all the crap Sony has pulled over the last few years (rootkits, EQ2 problems, one incompatible media format after another), I'm tired of even hearing the name Sony.
Not one more dime from me. - ihatekevinrose, on 10/12/2007, -22/+100With graphics that look about the same as the 360, a lame copy of Xbox Live, a complete and total rip-off of Nintendo, a $500-600 price point, and no new innovations, Sony has lost all credibility in my book and hopefully in yours.
- duke_nate, on 10/12/2007, -15/+92Oh dont worry, $70 games will be the minimum. Thanks sony for making another horribly overpriced media. Just another nail in Blu-Ray's coffin.
- ventro, on 10/12/2007, -1/+54IMHO, Nintendo's application is far more refined and well designed than the PS3 one. They actually designed the controller around the concept, instead of just sticking a gyro inside a PS2 controller. You can tell that the Nintendo concept was something they spent a lot of time refining whereas the PS3 idea smells a lot like a last minute feature addition.
It would be very hard for one to perform the same tasks on a PS3 controller that are possible on the Wii, such as holding it like a tennis racket, a baseball bat, a fishing rod, a football, a crossbow, etc. The Wii controller actually allows for full spatial movement within 3D space (this is with the aid of a couple things you have to attach to the sides of your TV IIRC), whereas the PS3 functions as more of a tilt detector, looking at the videos.
This is mainly because to hold the PS3 controller comfortably you have to keep both hands on it. So you are limited to waving it around and lifting it up and down, like that dude was doing with the airplane.
And the word is that the nunchuck controller has yet another motion sensor, allowing for even more relativistic motion possibilites.
Overall I think Nintendo's implementation is much more refined and well thought out, and allows for a wider range of possibilities by design than the PS3 solution. - theGrue, on 10/12/2007, -6/+50What's to touch on? It will play movies on Blu-Ray discs. There, touched!
- retral, on 10/12/2007, -5/+40This is ludicrous... and so is the controller they ripped off of nintendo.
- mrtibbs309, on 10/12/2007, -6/+39"This is ludicrous... and so is the controller they ripped off of nintendo."
... and if you want the 'full' experience you will be paying $600
Not this time Sony, not this time. - adml_shake, on 10/12/2007, -4/+31*spits soda all over desk and keyboard*
You have got to be ***** me.
Well sony it was nice while it lasted....but I'm afraid it's time for us to part ways... - mike_p, on 10/12/2007, -7/+32AND just to add... you KNOW that the retailers are going to use their "legitimate" price gouging techniques like... making it a requirement that you buy a bundle of a system, games, accessory and/or other in order to reserve a system.
From GameSpot regarding 60GB system:
"..and the 60GB one bearing an "open price," which means retailers will set the price themselves" ... Oh, great!
At least both systems have an HDD installed, that is a major bonus. Makes it a standard. - GoMe, on 10/12/2007, -32/+56It's really not that much money when you put it into perspective, but the way Sony and Microsoft subsidised costs are different.
For example, one way Microsoft made lots of money back from the 360 was selling overpriced peripherals. For example, the Wireless Adapter (which is useful for a large number of people) is optional and is priced extremely high. A USB Wi-Fi adapter that costs $5 to make is being sold for $100. Wi-Fi is standard in the PS3.
Also, for each Xbox Live Gold subscriber, MS will make $50 per year. In a 4-year lifespan, MS will get $200 from each of them. Sony will allow you to play games free online, while there will be other paid features.
Also that's not including the Blu-Ray drive inside. For the $500 you would spend on a 1080i HD DVD player, you can buy a 1080p Blu-Ray player for the same price AND a console. Even for the people who don't want the drive, it can still be used for extra space on games. Oblivion already fills a DVD9, and that's a near launch title.
Really, the PlayStation 3 looks expensive (and it is), but it's a better value than the 360 if you add in the total costs. - Zero2aHero, on 10/12/2007, -5/+28"To be fair though Microsoft charges $100 and it's not even 40 gigs."
But that $100 also includes an xbox live silver subscription, wireless controller, hi-def cables, and a headset - KidVicious, on 10/12/2007, -5/+28I thought Sony said that they weren't going to have two SKUs.
- shout, on 10/12/2007, -3/+23RIDICULOUS! Add in peripherals, games, etc. It's *****.
- BBX25, on 10/12/2007, -5/+24$659 Canadian? In-*****-sane.
I can nearly buy a 360 and a Wii for that. - chaosdude78, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18Not only is it a rip-off of nintendo, look at the center, looks like a guide button.
- SayAnything, on 10/12/2007, -3/+20So I can purchase a Premium Xbox 360 and a Nintendo Wii (if it's priced at 200.00 or less) for the price of a 600.00 60 GB HD PS3 that has slightly better graphics than the 360 and can play blu-ray disc? I know what I'm not buying come November.
- eastbeast314, on 10/12/2007, -3/+20The 360 is $300 or $400
The PS3 is $500 or $600 - phpirate, on 10/12/2007, -3/+20Thats way too expensive for a blu ray player :P
- fingiecrookie, on 10/12/2007, -3/+20And Sony doesn't? What's your point?
- jwitherow, on 10/12/2007, -11/+28To be fair though Microsoft charges $100 and it's not even 40 gigs.
- SkeletaLlama, on 10/12/2007, -16/+32You're ***** insane. No one even wants a BluRay player. And no one wants a $600 BluRay player.
- Misos, on 10/12/2007, -4/+20With the Wii expecting to be $200-$300, and odds are 360 will drop at least $50 by the time the PS3 launches, I think Sony will be undone this generation. $500 will be at least $150 more than the competition, what do you think parents are going to be getting their kids for Christmas? It's not going to be the pricey PS3.
I may get one in two years once the price drops, if only for the fact it'll be a cheap server. - 1911wolf, on 10/12/2007, -3/+19I just got my X360 last week, and I'll buy the Wii even with the lame name. I've been playing the Zelda and Mario games since the original NES so I 'll get it.
I swore off the Playstation after I left SCEA having worked there for 4 years. I swore off all Sony after the free rootkits they give you with your music. Good thing too, no way in hell am I going to pay $499 especially knowing how things are run internally. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15Boy that's expensive....., yet will see hordes of people buying it or the ad hoc price gouging on ebay.
- envy860, on 10/12/2007, -4/+19I actually had a little bit of intrest left in the PS3, even with all that has been wrong with sony lately, but its done now. The boring controller with stolen feeatures and high price.... Thats it. Especially stealing these two ideas, that really bothers me. We now know what the delays were for... I hope Nintendo kills them.
- tails, on 10/12/2007, -3/+18@ GoMe
The price might be comparable if the entry level PS3 (the 20 Gb model) came with Wifi or HDMI. But it doesn't. You only get those features if you pony up the $600 you need for the premium model.
Sony Press Release: http://www.scei.co.jp/corporate/release/pdf/060509ae.pdf
Sure, Sony will allow free online play, but who's going to build the online infrastructure? Not Sony. They're leaving it up to each game developer. There's no single online Sony community. What game developer in their right mind is going to take on that challenge when they can use the Xbox Live system that's already been developed? Why bother developing matchmaking? Why bother developing online high score boards? Why bother developing protocols to support multiplayer gaming? Xbox 360 has done it for them, letting developers work on making games fun.
Blue Ray? Pfff, whatever. I get a 2X blue ray drive, and I only get HDMI if I buy the $600 premium console. Last time I checked, my DVD collection was good enough and why take a risk taking sides in a format war that's undecided? - svnft, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14you misspelled misspelled, how ironic.
- nickpowers101, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16I believe their controller has a tilt feature, not the full motion sensing abilities of the Wii controller. It's a sad to see them try to rip off the Nintendo controller so blatently. Personally, I think the system is overpriced, but I'll still probably get it just for MGS4. In any case, I'm looking forward to the Nintendo press conference tomorrow - should be interesting...
- Mac2492, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15I could buy a new video card for that much... a good one, too!
(And a Wii, of course.) - rhino_rampant, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15Hey! Remember that time Sony pulled a [insert KOREAN TOY MANUFACTURER here] and added cheap gimmicks to their glittering pile of crap!? I can't wait to buy my $499 "Sontendo!"
- jhunt, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14The $499 version does not have Wireless or HDMI? lame.
http://digg.com/gaming/Sony_PS3_$499US_version_will_NOT_have_HDMI_port - runninmac, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13Yep because Im sure Microsoft from a business standpoint would just love all to tell all of their customers that they should wait to buy an Xbox 360 until November. *tint of sarcasm
- fingiecrookie, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1417th, actually. 11th is for Japan.
- duke_nate, on 10/12/2007, -6/+19Lol, sony is loosing money even before the manufacturing starts. They just dont get it.
- Mitchl, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14I have one response.... Wheeeee! I am the knight who says "Wii".
I was wanting a PS3, and probably still do. But at $499/599, I will buy a Wii, and then start saving $3 a week. At some point, the PS3 will come down and my savings will go up- probably about 2 years down the road they will meet up.
I actually feel relief in not waiting in line for a PS3, and dealing with the launch titles. By the time I get one, there will be good games on the discount shelf. - zebwinz, on 10/12/2007, -4/+17Does anyone recall how horrible the DVD playback options were on the PS2? It was a joke, with severely limited options (i.e. optional audio tracks, etc) so it is a great question to know what functionality will be available, compared to a stand alone Blu-Ray player.
I have the same worries about the 360 HD-DVD add on. Sure the price will be lower than a stand alone, but will it be worth it? - SkeletaLlama, on 10/12/2007, -11/+22Guys don't worry, April Fools runs through May this year. Right? Right? I mean there's no way they're actually serious about this is there?
- slurpee, on 10/12/2007, -13/+24$399 for xbox360 (20gigs with extra wireless) + $100 HD dvd addon = $499
PS3 $499 blue ray dvd with 20 gigs - extra wireless = to me this price is not too bad :P - Shaunt, on 10/12/2007, -4/+15Why? The graphics are at best slightly better than current gen 360 games based on what I saw in the stream. And I have a feeling that Microsoft will have graphics to equal those shown at the Sony conference tomorow.
- kristin364, on 10/12/2007, -4/+15Sony is crazy. When you factor in the cost of the games and extra controllers...ick. Too much for a poor college girl like me!
- mynimal, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13Yeah they're screwed. :/ First the completely unoriginal "next-gen" controller and now this ridiculous price?
- games396, on 10/12/2007, -6/+17i hope they don't expect me to pay for it at all because i'm not getting one
- Psykus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11To which Nintendo replied,
http://img487.imageshack.us/img487/9576/200lol2wy.jpg - tenchi71, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11wait till we start seeing pre-orders that force you into a bundle deal... I can see a PS3 60GB plus a few games plus an extra controller bundle going for a cool grand on launch day, easy.
or how about an HDTV plus PS3 bundle for 2g's??
I don't think we'll find a stand alone PS3 till early next year. We'll be raped by the bundle deals... the cost for entry will be far from the stated $499/$599 - aplardi, on 10/12/2007, -7/+17I HAVE A HUGE MAJOR ANNOUNCEMENT TO MAKE!
Nobody /wii/ll buy the PlayStation 3 without a second mortgage! - dracula7, on 10/12/2007, -4/+14the ipod is expensive because its nicely designed, intuitive, innovative... the ps3 is none of these things
- slurpee, on 10/12/2007, -4/+14$100 extra for 40g lol, they sure know how to do the math... but for FFXIII I think i'm still going to buy one but not at that price :p
- Spazkake, on 10/12/2007, -4/+13Thank god. This extreme failure from Sony will allow Nintendo to take the reigns again!
- SkeletaLlama, on 10/12/2007, -5/+14At $600 you won't need eBay to get one. Just walk into any store any day between launch and whenever and you'll find 100 sitting on the shelf. This is the PSP all over again. Launching at twice the price of the competitor, no matter how good the graphics are and no matter if it plays a new movie format or not is a terrible idea. How could they let this happen?
