- topbravo, on 10/12/2007, -6/+247The sad thing is that the PS3 does not actually emulate PS2.. They have an actual PS2 mobo and emotion engine chip in there... I have no clue how this got botched. :(
- antipro, on 10/12/2007, -16/+206Wow that's great considering Xbox360 upscales Xbox games. And the Wii upscales VC games also.
It's like Sony is actively trying to get people not to buy the PS3. It kind of makes me want to buy another PS2 just to have a spare in case the one I have gets that wonderful disc read error. - CiXeL, on 10/12/2007, -9/+194the scary thing is. this is AFTER its been through YouTube's compression and its STILL noticible!
- NYC10004, on 10/12/2007, -12/+145Sony thinks that they can get away with it, because they believe that their target base are a bunch of raving simpletons that will defend them no matter what.
- negativefx, on 10/12/2007, -7/+121@jaytea: see topbravo's comment to prove you're an idiot.
- RekCognize, on 10/12/2007, -1/+110It's a $600 system. "it doesn't look that bad" doesn't cut it.
- RancidLM, on 10/12/2007, -9/+103Its not about graphics.. its about gameplay!.. ..oops... wrong system!
- topbravo, on 10/12/2007, -11/+95The funny thing is I was contemplating selling my PS2 because the PS3 supposedly worked as a ps2... Im not kidding when I say that it looks H O R R I B L E...
The funny thing is that they could just release a quick patch and all would be well again. - JimDigg, on 10/12/2007, -6/+88Maybe they sold their PS2 to help reduce the cost of the loan they took out to get a PS3.
- andyrobo60, on 10/12/2007, -6/+88They will do a firmware patch for this right after they release the firmware patch to fix the 1080i problem (aka never).
- calebhawk, on 10/12/2007, -26/+100The Next Generation starts whenever Sony says it does... Remember that! Sony is a ***** joke that keeps me laughing day after day... To all who bought a PS3, I'm so sorry!
- topbravo, on 10/12/2007, -3/+70To condense it all into one nice package... Plus I was "lead" to believe that the ps3 upscaled everything.
- walkingdogs, on 10/12/2007, -32/+89@NYC10004
Because in most cases sony supporters ARE simpletons. They show whiz bang commercials and package subpar electronics in some sexy plastic case and sell it for more. And thanks to the stupid American mindset of buying into marketing blindly Sony will continue to get away with offering ***** products at over inflated prices. If sony spent some of that marketing money on actually innovating and developing quality products they could go back to being the king off all electronics. I also feel no sympathy for anyone who bought the PS3 and are surprised that it is a cluster ***** of overpromised overpriced under delivered technology. Didn't the 10 daily negative news stories give you any clue as to how ***** and troublesome the final product was going to be? See SIMPLETONS!!!! - Karyyk, on 10/12/2007, -3/+55@ jaytea: Not only are you misinformed about the PS3 EMULATING PS2 games, but also in your assumption that emulated games look worse. One of the big draws with BLEEM (and BLEEMcast) was that it actually made PS One games look better thanks to better filtering and ran them at higher resolutions.
- Goombellaofgoom, on 10/12/2007, -2/+52It isn't just jaggies, did anyone else notice that the colors were better on the PS2 side?
- Hickeroar, on 10/12/2007, -6/+50If the PS3 REALLY had a full PS2 set of electronics inside it...ALL the PS2 games would work. Yet they don't. Sounds to be like sony lied or seriously broke something.
- topbravo, on 10/12/2007, -12/+55Don't get me wrong; I am loving my PS3 playing rfom and using it as a blu-ray player... I just have like 5-7 ps2 games that i need to beat like Okami and FFXII and xenosagas 1 2 3
Todays patch made the ps3 harddrive function like a ps2 harddrive so ffxi players rejoice - profOblivion, on 10/12/2007, -4/+41Sony's software support (other than SCE games which aren't developed by Sony itself, as we all know) tends to be ultra-lame, so don't hold your breath. Nothing but complaints about the front-end UI design, now firmware issues...
Oh, and you can also ask anyone who's ever used Sonicstage (*shudder*). - RyeBrye, on 10/12/2007, -8/+44Topbravo = one pissed off customer.
Can ANYONE else confirm this? It seems to make no sense - since the PS3 basically has an entire PS2 inside of it. - topbravo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+34FFXII just came out... Okami is a classic.... Xenosagas 3 is an epic... MANY reasons to still play PS2
- topbravo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+32umm not in the least... look at my digg history and you will see I am all about the PS3.. I just wanted to raise awareness about this horrible "glitch"
- NSMike, on 10/12/2007, -2/+27It's definitely not unplayable, and the ugliness is something some gamers can probably get past...
But what is the truly infuriating aspect here is that there seems to be no real effort to make things work the way they should. It's like it was just slapped together haphazardly in order to make it a "feature." To me, it wouldn't be a feature if my games looked worse. And I think it would make a big enough difference for myself that I would break out the PS2 and hook it back up because the knowledge that the graphics are just that much smoother would nag at me while playing. And if I were to buy a PS3 to consolidate space in my entertainment center/TV cabinet/living room floor/whatever, I would be upset at that supposed feature being worthless.
For me, this isn't an issue because I'm not buying a PS3, and I don't have a PS2 to worry about for backwards compatability. - topbravo, on 10/12/2007, -17/+40I feel shafted for the lack of a better word...
I feel like going on a Keith Olberman rant on Sony...
You Sir,
Are a liar, and a cheat!
/rant - s14sh3r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+20Wow.
But...see what happens when you get in a hurry to buy something when it first comes out? I''ll wait until all this is patched. - Groovemaster, on 10/12/2007, -2/+22You've experienced the problem yourself and confirmed that it's true, yet you only "halfway" believe it?
Fair dues, I guess... If I'd bought a PS3 I'd probably be struggling with denial too. - topbravo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+18No faking here...
Straight off the official PS boards
http://boardsus.playstation.com/playstation/board/message?board.id=ps3&thread.id=808212&view=by_date_ascending&page=1 - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -7/+25I think the firmware issue and quality problems aren't solved by the PS2 chips inside because, guess what, they still have to pass what they process *through* the PS3 hardware to get to your TV and sound system. The problems lie in that interface and I'm sure they're working hard to make it better, it's in their best interests after all.
So far I've been impressed with what Sony has done firmware-wise. Since I don't have a crap HDTV that won't do 720p, everything they've 'fixed' or added in firmware has been a plus. The hard drive backup to external media is nice. The faster and much more compliant web browser was a bonus. The weekly additions to the Sony network have been cool as well. Go! Sudoku is alot of fun and my wife is addicted to it. The Lemmings demo is also alot of fun.
I'm patiently waiting for upscaling on everything though. I know it can be done through software. Right now DVD playback has banding in it sometimes and drops my TV down to 480p mode where everything sucks to begin with. Sony is supposed to support upscaling to 1080i or 720p for DVDs very soon.
Don't forget that the X360 had these same issues. At launch, DVD playback was fuxored for alot of movies. Backwards compatibility was also very bad. It's only a matter of time before firmware updates bring us up to speed.
Why haven't they fixed all this stuff already? Because there was a big difference between the test rigs and final production hardware. Even game developers had to scramble at the last second to make fixes to games. If you don't believe me, jump on irc.freenode.net and get in the yellowdog linux channel. The devs there will explain the differences between the test hardware and final PS3 and the troubles it has caused them. - NSMike, on 10/12/2007, -11/+27Come now. You know that argument is for the ultra-realistic vs. stylized graphics. ***** vs. nice is a different argument entirely.
- topbravo, on 10/12/2007, -3/+19yeah the patch came this morning... its just for PS2 hard drive functionality on the PS3 so only final fantasy eleven guys can benefit
- daridave, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13It's selling 3 times more than the PS3... Yeah, shortages, but 3X ???
Are you trying to say it's dead ? - Hickeroar, on 10/12/2007, -4/+16Yeah...hotcakes at a restaurant that ran out of batter...
- topbravo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12Who said anything about hating it?
Im pissed as a consumer not getting what is promised to me... We call that UNETHICAL in the states.
For the record Ive had a sony playstation ever since inception. - xerokitsune, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10I have a Wii, it's a wonderfully fun system. Now if it was PS2 compatible then what you said would make sense to me. There was a ton of great PS2 games that didn't make it to other consoles. While my Wii plays the Gamecube games(even though you need original GQ controllers and memory cards, sorry mini rant) perfectly, there were not many games I picked up for it.
For me, I have about 5 PS2 games for every 1 GameCube title in my library. - topbravo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Thats straight from the PS forumns
http://boardsus.playstation.com/playstation/board/message?board.id=ps3&thread.id=808212 - oldmanstauf, on 10/12/2007, -9/+19Graphics on the PS2 have always been terrible?? Hardly. Even FF XII trumps some next gen games.
- MouseCircus, on 10/12/2007, -4/+13Stylized just means that they were attempting to create art. They were attempting to create something entirely different, at least on the graphical level. Something that makes the game look unique.
Not the real life emulation that most developers are trying now. I never liked, or appreciated realistic graphics. Maybe it's because of my bias, but most games that try to achieve a realistic look tend to look extremely similar to the point where I can't tell which game is which. - fuzzynyanko, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Actually, it's probably rendering the games correctly. The PS2 had horrible AA, as seen with early PS2 titles. The way the PS2 compensated for the bad AA was doing a temporal smoother-type blur.
I'm not sure if a simple firmware update would do or not. If the PS2 graphics chip output was fed into the PS3 graphics chipset (or any CPU/GPU for that matter), then AA should be really fast and firmware would fix it right up. If the graphics chip has no physical connection to another processor, then doing additional AA would be difficult.
Nintendo's Gamecube and Wii have graphics chips made by ATI. Microsoft's Xbox has an Nvidia GPU and the 360 has an ATI GPU. MS probably uses DirectX so upscaling is much easier for their systems, though probably not as easy as Nintendo (since Nintendo used both the same CPU manufacturer and GPU manufacturer for their two systems). Sony's PS2 uses a Sony graphics renderer but chose an NVidia GPU for the PS3.
Personally, if the PS3 did AA instead of blurring on PS2 titles, it'd be a huge incentive to me to buy a PS3 next year since the graphics improvement would be huge. - topbravo, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12I got my PS3 during a drop shipment at a best buy... I was like now or I have to wait till March... Overall Im happy with it. I just can't understand this technical blunder...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+14I've only tried Burnout Revenge and Shadow of the Colossus on the PS3 so far, and while initially SotC was indeed crappy, I tweaked the game's video settings (making sure it was progressive scan widescreen) and it came out looking just like the PS2 (both consoles were used on my 1080p HDTV). Burnout Revenge looks perfect. Wouldn't be surprised, though, if older and less sophisticated games didn't look as good in translation.
- razorsharp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Sony's backwards compatibility is better than Microsoft's. Remember Peter Moore saying, "We underpromised and overdelivered concerning backwards compatability?" Right. . .
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12"Can ANYONE else confirm this?"
So you're saying that bravo somehow faked the video? Please say you're not questioning the authenticity of this video. - xerokitsune, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9If your buying the 360 for it's XBox backwards compadibility be shur to look over the list to see if the games your planing on useing with it are there. There are a lot of XBox games that still do not work on the 360.

Just because something is emulated does not mean its gonna look like crap. I stopped buying Virtual Console Titles when I realized I could play the n64 roms in a MUCH greater resolution and with anti-aliasing on my HTPC. Super Mario 64 running 1280x720@60HZ with 4xAA and 16xAnistropic is simply breathtaking considering the title's age. (disclaimer: I own both the cartridge and the Virtual Console channel of Super Mario 64 on Wii). - DarkJC, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Regarding the colors, I've been playing FFX on my PS3, but I've hooked my PS3 up via component cables instead. My colors look much more like the PS2 side, except I still have the problems with jaggies from the PS3 side. Maybe something to do with the HDMI cable? Or maybe the TV color settings for the HDMI input on his side?
- BasouKazuma, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11The Xenosaga series is absolute garbage compared to Xenogears. I was so pissed off at that game since it had so much potential but it never delivered.
- EvalCrux, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11My PS2 broke a while back, so I was as happy to get a PS3 to play my old PS2 games as I was to not play the crappy games released for the PS3 thus far. I have indeed noticed what I thought couldn't be true: the graphics seemed jagged and worse when playing games like FFX/XII =/. I attributed this to the fact that I'm now playing on a larger TV, but it's HD vs the old 20 inch I used to play the PS2 on!! So I don't know, I halfway believe the argument put forth by the video.
- bajasoprano, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7hey guys remember this the ps3 is still a new system and yes it does have its flaws and yes its over priced but you know what it can be fixed
im not a ps3 owner nor will i buy a ps3 for another year and a half because of the flaws < and price tag> but remember these are the same problems you will get as an early adopter to early technology. if you have a problem with new technology not working as stated right out the box then you should wait untill the problems are fixed.
fact is that people are bashing the ps3 with good reason but give sony some time after all even nintendo and microsoft took time to get there ***** in order. look at the 360 bricks - CMfly, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Yeah I can confirm FFXII looks like crap on PS3.. Could switch back to PS2 but would need one of those stupid memory card adapters first.. Ah well hopefully a firmware update will be around shortly..
- HesNikke, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9@profOblivion:
another example of crappy sony software support... anything related to the clié. "got bugs in our software? too bad, it's shipped, we're not updating it :P" - ZenMojo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Why are people getting dugg down for pointing out that some games actually work perfectly well? We know for a fact that it doesn't effect all games:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9reXD1eIhgY&mode=related&search=
See, Final Fantasy XII works perfectly on the PS3. Sony already said they had backwards compatibility problems with some games, and Final Fantasy X was one of the first games released.
Someone else higher up in the thread pointed out that activating Progressive Scan removed most of the problems.
Anyway, this thread just sounds like the first visual example of the backwards compatibility problems we've known Sony has had already. It's not all games, it seems to be only a handful from what I can tell. -
