- GabrielS, on 10/12/2007, -5/+36That is an astounding statistic. Craigslist prices appear to be similar.
I just bought an Xbox 360 premium for $299. - 4ArmedDeath, on 10/12/2007, -6/+37I'm praying that eBay's flooded in the next couple days with systems, and no one can get more than retail for 'em.
- prockcore, on 10/12/2007, -2/+23Average means nothing, how about the median price? Fake bids above $10,000 are throwing off the average.
(A search on finished auctions with a max price of $600 returned over 1400 results yesterday evening) - mv10, on 10/12/2007, -8/+24Does the stats include the $99,999,999 sale .. if so, the numbers are all off
- wmarcello, on 10/12/2007, -7/+23People with that much disposable income need to find something better to spend their money on.
- Mist0r_Wiggles, on 10/12/2007, -5/+21Those idiots...
- epu2, on 10/12/2007, -5/+20the sellers or the buyers??
- briguymaine, on 10/12/2007, -3/+16Picked up my new Xbox 360 Premium for $200 @ Micro Center in Cambridge, MA (they have stores across the US). $100 back in a rebate, and $100 off for signing up for their credit card.
Used games at EB and Barterbee. I am one cheap motherf'er! - Muyoso, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14The smart ones are waiting until there are almost no PS3's on ebay, and then selling theirs. Supply and Demand.
- ZenMojo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13You'd expect a ***** more on sale since today was the release date...unless people are actually keeping their PS3's to play them....
- middleman, on 10/12/2007, -8/+18Like a 360 or Wii?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+14My buddy and I sold four on Craigslist this afternoon. We hand delivered the systems and took only cash. Three for $2,300 (System only. No games) and on our last delivery my friend sold one he was keeping for a gift to the lady that needed another one for $2,500 (With Three games, an extra controller, and an HDMI cable)
Note: Two went to Cardinal baseball players and the lady who bought the last two is the CEO of Build-A-Bear Workshop.
Investment = 2,400
Profit = 7,000 - middleman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Definitely Buyers.
- drjborg, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10JFC, 2 grand over list? I don't care what your vices are, 2G will buy a lot. A trip to Europe, 2 months rent, 12 grams of coke, well according to Google at least. Not like I would know.
- boberto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5If anything, these fraudulent bidders are making the casual rich guy who wants a PS3 say to himself "Wow, so they're really going for $3000? Well then I'll just have to bid $3000 on the next one..."
They're almost creating an artificial economy and putting more money in the ebayer's pockets. - chriskzoo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Over 20,000 listed now...I think I'll be holding off for a bit.
- sleestak240, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6I think the government should have purchased all available North American PS3 shipments and offered them as a signing bonus by which you would have to join the Army/Marines. I can see the headlines now: "Fight breaks out as citizens anxious to join the Marines want to be the first in line."
- charlescheese, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6I'm very curious how many of those are fake bids. I bet it's a HUGE amount.
- Mist0r_Wiggles, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5The smart people will wait till good games start come out for the PS3. I waited for Oblivion and GRAW to come out before I bought my 360 and it came with a bundle for free!. I just don't know why would people pay $2k- 3k for something that's not even that great yet? What makes a game system great is its games, and the PS3 is not that great right now, especially if you going to pay $2k-3k on eBay.
- NeoTechni, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4"NeoTechni you are the biggest fanboy on digg that I know of that I havn't banned yet because your comments are just so darn laughable. Goodbye forever!"
defectDS, you're the same DS fanboy that's been harassing me for months. You are so pathetic you harass people that like a videogame system different fromy our own. My god, you're sick. - DigiShaman, on 10/12/2007, -6/+9I really hope those that made the purchase are happy. Personally however, I can NOT justify paying over $600 dollars for a game system. Second, I've learned to never buy a Sony product from the 1st generation production run. They're historically riddled with bugs/flaws.
I might buy a PS3 just for the ability to play HD movies, but not unless Sony can mark the system below $300. - berfmurret, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4if you can spend $2500 on a ***** video game console then yeah id say you have a bit of disposable income to throw around...
- dan4prez, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Well I just checked ebay and there are about 30,000 PS3s on it and they are only selling for about $900-$1000. That makes me laugh as now that eBay is saturated with PS3s, they aren't making a very good profit anymore. $200 profit for standing outside for 3 days. LMFAO
- sensia3, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6I kinda, feel sorry for the moronic early adopters.
- keikun, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5you do know that sony is losing a butt load of cash just selling the systems at their current price so don't expect a price drop anytime soon in the next 2 or 3 years even. just look at the psp. great products, just expensive.
- NeoTechni, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"You make it sound as if though every single PS3 in America will be on Ebay less than 24 hours after the launch."
No, I make it sound like the exact opposite. Please re-read my post.
I was saying anyone claiming that "every single PS3 in America will be on Ebay less than 24 hours after the launch" is wrong/lying - Rockarollr, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4appawentwy microdot not too good at maf.
- IOIIOOO, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Oh yeah, how is waiting in line in the cold to buy a system to sell "cowardly"?
That doesn't even make sense... - Kxpuc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3good thing the PS3 is so expensive at retail being $600 since "no one" is willing to pay that price so they have to resort to paying $2,000 on eBay
- Llanowar, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4And this after thousands of topics on digg about how over-expensive the ps3 is.
- rmiller07, on 10/12/2007, -5/+8If you all didn't know this already... These consoles are selling for such ridiculous prices because an alliance of true gamers are taking it into their own hands to fraudulently bid on these systems. If you don't believe me, then just check out the auctions. You will see all the high bids are submitted by users with hardly any feedback (usually 0). It's obvious that people are creating fake accounts and shooting up the prices on these things.
To me... I think this is hilarious and I 100% support these frauds because of the cowardly people who are only looking to profit off of the system instead of not ripping off the people who truly want the system. The Ebay plan backfired on them. - zetsurin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3"The smart ones are waiting until there are almost no PS3's on ebay, and then selling theirs. Supply and Demand."
The golden rule on the stockmarket is that it is better to sell too early rather than too late. I doubt there are such people or they are gullible fools clearly with little or no financial markets experience. They'll get burned as prices are already following a declining trend. Then the next batch of units will arrive... - dissident, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3not true, now's the time to do it... the prices aren't going to go back up, only down. The longer you wait the lower they will sell for... never again will they be above $2000
- IOIIOOO, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3@Microdot -
The estimate is that there were less than 150,000 units yesterday with the latest shortage, and there are over 30,000 on Ebay RIGHT NOW, not even including the pre-sales.
That's over 20%, not "less than 1/2 of 1%". - zetsurin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I think most of these auctions will default and not go to closure. As tubejay and jstem1994 touched on, the real analysis we will be able to make is by watching the feedback ratings of both the buyers and sellers.
- toshipaine, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Can a PS3 bought on eBay for $2400 be sold for more on eBay?
- IOIIOOO, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I sold my PS3 for $2400 today, in part THANKS to the 0-score bidders. They drove the price up, and some actual bidders met the price, which gave the auction to them when I cancelled the bids of the 0-scores immediately prior to the end.
Geniuses, all of them. They can't get a PS3 and they blame the Ebayers, so they inflate the price, making the Ebayers MORE money, even if it means a re-list or selling as a Second Chance auction to the highest legit bidder. Plus their ridiculous $10,000+ "wins" make the news as if they were actual sales, which in turn drives more non-gamers to try and buy the PS3 in stores to Ebay them, further keeping it out of the gamers' hands. - zetsurin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2His point only validates more the higher the percentage of them appear on ebay grows: $500-600 is clearly not too expensive as has been made out.
So how many predictions did these Wiiggers get wrong? A lot, and it's growing by the hour. Never take advice from 10 year olds on the internet. - pglowiak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The other side of this says that how many of these auctions that close will get the high bidder's payment and vanish? That is the "other" way of some people making profit. If you think that eBay will help them get their money back, don't hold your breath.
I think personally that eBay is getting too big for their own britches, but that is just me. I no longer buy or sell on there, because i don't agree with a lot of their policies and how they treated the people that made them what they are - people like you and me. After we made them a success, guess who the first ones that got screwed were? Yep, you're right - us! - lcohiomatty86, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2that would be a pretty slick idea if military enrollment was low and this was an alternative to a draft to help get people signed up... thats an awesome idea.. but i wouldnt join the army just for a game console though...
- DrGamez, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Apparently someone realizes the folly of their plan.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3"Oh yeah, how is waiting in line in the cold to buy a system to sell "cowardly"?
That doesn't even make sense..."
It's just frustration on behalf of those who didn't want to or coulnd't wait in line for one. Captialism works because the vast majority of people are inherently greedy. Get over it. - Providence, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2yeah, It's starting to die down. If you plan on selling yours, now is the time to wait. The max they're going for is about 1200.
- TastySheriff, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Keep in mind that there are outliers, like the one bieng sold for 99,999,999.00 that has actually been bid on. I'm sure that that is skewing the statistics quite a bit
- zetsurin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2@dan4prez
Yeah, sucked in to them. I hope some of them were on contracts and took a loss of pay for their 'windfall'. This goes to show that once too many people start thinking there is a surefire way to an easy buck, it generally doesn't last for long.
I think somehow there will need to be safeguards in place for the next console launches in 5+ years time. Perhaps ebay then will disallow auctions until such units are in plentiful supply or after 6 months after launch etc. Of course that is naturally in their best interests but Sony, Microsoft nor Nintendo (yes, ALL 3) won't be sitting around watching this kind of nonsense happen with their launches in the future: they would prefer that the units go to the people who actually want them, and at the RRP the manufacturer has decided. - cogsprocket, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Hang on guys! therethere76 has some anecdotal evidence that completely negates any reports that there were failures in PlayStation hardware. I know you all want to mention the number of people who reported problems with the DVD lasers in the PS2 and I'm sure some of you want to mention how you had to flip your original PlayStation over in order to get it to play games, but don't bother. therethere76 never had a problem so your points are moot. All arguments are surely trounced by this revelation
- acff, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4that's amazing that you are about to block a user for their console preference
- zdiggler, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I can't do $300 for a game system and games cost about $50 more. let alone $600 and ebay pricies.
- booc0mtaco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Some guy sold a 1$ bill on ebay for 12$. anything is possible.
- griz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm guessing Marvin was referring to buying one for $599 and cashing in on the $2500 sale of it. Not being able to afford one for $2500.
