- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -11/+106It's the first time I've seen it. So shut the hell up.
- fatalfury, on 10/12/2007, -7/+63yes se1zure, Nintendo stole motion sensing controller from the Wii
- will729, on 10/12/2007, -11/+64se1zure: nintendo "stole it" from a pelican product for the PS1, not sony's PS3..... you lose, good day sir
- RazorElite, on 10/12/2007, -6/+42Doesn't stop it from being a BS excuse. Immersion say they can make it work. So wtfever the controller has, point is, it can work if Sony decides to pay up. So you're right, this proves nothing NEW.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -13/+49"PS3 controller used to rumble in 1999"
There was a PS3 controller in 1999?? ;) - triforcer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+35just to make things clearer it was a playstation magazine that created the video criticizing sony's choices with the ps3 controller.
- Roguecop, on 10/12/2007, -3/+36There is a company(Immersion Corporation) which holds a patent on the rumble technology. If Sony uses it on the PS3 they will be required to pay them for it, perhaps per system sold, perhaps tens of millions. Sony is unwilling to do this. Therefore they are using the motion sensing 'problem' ostensibly to get around the real reason for the exclusion. At least that is the more likely scenario.
Their motives in this are very transparent and are helping to feed the already bad PR the company is getting... - Fafnir43, on 10/12/2007, -5/+36> kazsymonds, the last I heard this was a technology news website.
Like it or not, consoles are technology. Articles about major upcoming consoles are therefore relevant, in the same way that articles about AJAX and Ruby On Rails are relevant. And abusing the reporting system to try and get the article deleted won't change that. - skunkman62, on 10/12/2007, -2/+32beachesandmusic = fanboy nazi
- kazsymonds, on 10/12/2007, -5/+31How is it spam? Is all true, im sure you were the first to point out the 360s flaws so your gonna have to take this one and many many more on the chin my friend.
- INHUMANITY, on 10/12/2007, -2/+25I wouldn't use the tilt feature either way. I already have to deal with 103 buttons on the controller, so having to tilt my hands for a more "realistic" experience bites.
I know I'm off-topic, but I just wanted to throw that out there. Shame on Sony for their fibbing. You guys think it could have anything to do with the patent infringement crap they went/are going through? - jakemitchinson, on 10/12/2007, -3/+25you're an idiot
- Xenoxi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+21Wow, you really are an asshat!
Whether it is pointing out the flaws of a console or not, it is still technology news, and therefore in it's rightful place on a technology news website. You're on your own bud. - Sarcose, on 10/12/2007, -5/+24No, se1zure, it is not the same basic technology, it is an extremely superior technology, with rumble. The wii controller, first of all, has a far more sophisticated motion sensing capability than the PS3's lame attempt at an upgraded controller. It detects complete, 360 degree movement, while the E3 Press Keynote for Sony said something to the effect of "it has nine directions!!!1!"
Sony has been shooting themselves in the foot over and over and over again, and there is absolutely no question that they are starting to get desperate.
Furthermore, just because the technology had prior usage does not mean that all reiterations of that technology are copying from the original source. A Sony bigwig could have looked at the Wii controller and said, "Hey, let's do that motion sensing thing that Pelican released," just as easily as they could have been copying from the Pelican model itself. Everyone is acting as if, just because the technology existed previously, no move to implement it is new or innovative. You know, disregarding the fact that to base an entire controller around motion sensing is blatantly controversial, since it changes the entire dynamic of the way video games control, simply because motion sensing has never been done to such a degree in video games before. And disregarding the fact that Sony released this little gem at the last minute, ineffectually, and has had a hard time defending itself against allegations that they copied (their only defense was "Nintendo did it first with 3D!" which was wrong, because Starfox came before anything they did with 3D).
The entire "prior existence of technology" concept for "copying" is the wrong way to look at it. Sony has what appears to be a very ineffectual motion sensing controller, and Nintendo has what appears to be a very effectual motion sensing controller. Shut up about anything else. - skunkman62, on 10/12/2007, -2/+18beachesandmusic = asshat
- Roguecop, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17Too supplement...
http://www.bit-tech.net/news/2006/03/13/sony_dual_shock_patent - yohan, on 10/12/2007, -3/+17Even if it was a coincidence, spamming your product is not cool.
- triforcer, on 10/12/2007, -4/+18digg is full of so much sensational stories from blogs and other unconfirmed reports that links to gaming fanboys are the least of their problems. digg is already a respected site, but i don't think anyone will ever expect it to be a trusted source for news because the internet contains too much speculative information as fact.
besides the video raises a legitimate questions about the ps3 controller. - Vanda, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13Video games are technology, computers are technology and apparently the PS3 is a computer, to also state that the article is placed into the gaming section of digg, so I see no problem with it being here. Also the fact thats its on an Xbox fansite doesnt discredit the fact that the Playstation Magazine did the article about it, if Xbox magazine came out and said the Xbox 360 isnt what they had hoped and someone put that onto a PS3 fansite, it doesnt discredit the original source does it?
- evilspoons, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12I have a Logitech gamepad that came with a Star Wars: Rogue Squadron pre-release demo that does this too. Nothing fancy about the PS3, except that it adds another dimension to the tilt sensing. That being said, I found it rather tiring as an analogue stick replacement - it would work better with software designed for it, as we'll see on the Wii and PS3.
- TomP, on 10/12/2007, -11/+22Very misleading title
- bot001220, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11To be fair though, this podcast was made by PLAYSTATION, not 360 fanboys. When your _own fans_ make fun of your product and blatant lies, it's a hell of a lot more insulting than when it comes from the "Ps3 sucks lol" people.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12It wasn't a coincidence. The auction started one hour ago, and it's priced much higher than identical products listed earlier. He intended to capitalize on the Digg article.
- Murdats, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11"Vanda, the difference is that this is a technology news site. Not a videogame fanboy site. This article was written by a fanboy site and the majority of people discussing it here are fanboys."
2 things there, this is technology but digg is no longer a technology only site, it is news site for what can only be called 'net culture' however this was posted under the GAMING catagory, and look at that, it is about GAMING
also you say the majority of people discussing it, whats that, there are a lot of people discussing it, so a lot of people are interested in it, and a lot of people think it is news worthy, newsworthy on here under the GAMING catagory
also you are abusing the report system because you state that you mark any fanboy article as spam, and Im sure all of them didnt have lots of ads (which isnt spam anyway so your argument for this one is void)
if you want news only you are interested in, find it yourself (or dont click the stories you dont want to read) if you want stories that lots of people find interesting, come to digg
and to end it all of, you are a self important jackass - Fafnir43, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13jakemitchinson: Agreed.
CypherXero: The podcast is a recent one discussing a little-known controller for the PSX that pretty much duplicates the tilt-sensing capabilities of the PS3's controller, while including vibration (unlike the PS3 controller). This is relevant because it pretty much makes a mockery of Sony's claims of innovation, and because it calls the idea that vibration and tilt sensing are mutually exclusive into question. So, not spam. - Vanda, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13So then if it was put onto the official PSM website, it would be considered alright because it is comming from the mouth Sony/Sony affiliate and not from some anti-sony fanboys? Then again I guess we will never see it come directly from Sony because that would mean Sony would be telling us some truth about the PS3 and how it isnt as good as it should be perhaps, so I guess we will just have to leave it upto the fanboys to tell us what Sony is really upto.
- BlueLander, on 10/12/2007, -4/+13"It's actually quite tiring..."
If I could make one prediction about PS3 and Wii, it's that they will be responsible for dramatically building arm strength in all of us nerds.
Imagine, every console with a Power Glove packed right inside... - antsun85, on 10/12/2007, -11/+19se1zure, why must you continue to bring up such nonsense. why must you continue to defend a company which has for decade released broken overpriced products. no company can be on top of the industry forever, especially given sony's current arragonce. its called hubris se1zure.
- Wilcox, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8But don't forget they have "Riidge Racer"!
- breego, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9@beachesandmusic Because of Sony's lack of innovation we have CD's? Philips actually pioneered the research for what became CD's.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8"Huh? If diggers weren't morons then they would go to another auction and pay market value. But it seems that diggers are stupid and will bid on anything at any price. Don't blame the seller for stupid buyers..."
Diggers aren't morons. His item has received zero bids. - walugi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7beaches and music is a prime candidate as the abortion mascot. end of.
- Durinthal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7"First of all, the changes are supposed to go into effect on Monday. Until those changes are made, Digg has not changed. It is still a technology news website."
There's a category specifically labeled "Gaming". Gaming happens to be a subset of technology that's focused on entertainment.
"Second, even if the changes HAD gone into effect, this is the gaming section of the tech category, so only TECH content would be appropriate in this section. Articles about general gaming fandom and games would belong in the gaming section of the ENTERTAINMENT category."
No, this is the gaming section of Digg. It's not digg.com/technology/gaming, it's digg.com/gaming. That seems to imply that it's for everything gaming-related, not just the technology about it. If you want tech news, there's a section for that. It's not this one, though.
"The fact that users think it belongs here does not mean it belongs here. What belongs here is quality TECH content. If users allow non-tech posts in the tech category, that is a failure of user-moderation. User-moderated systems are only as good as the user-moderation."
Even ignoring the previous paragraph, the article is talking about how tilt-sensing technology was used in previous controllers and how it didn't interfere with rumble technology. How is this NOT tech-related?
"If you downmod the above comment, you're casting a vote for the ruination of Digg. You should be educating your fellow users--not encouraging ignorance."
Talk about sensationalism.. - Murdats, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5why not, the only difference should be a battery and a wireless transmitter/receiver sending/receiving the signal instead of a wire, the throughput should not be limited, not that you need that much anyway, I mean if I can stream movies wirelessly, why not a few button presses made up of what I assume is much less then 20 bits each (motion sensing will need more data hence the 20 but not a massive amount)
- Anomaly427, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8Uh huh.. and you REALLY needed to see the video before you posted that.
I guess you won't, so for your benefit - the podcast was made yesterday, about products from 1999. - thenamestj, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Hey...anyone hear that? Yes, that's the sound of Sony about to loose a little more money on their latest venture.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Let me ask you something: why do you think Sony was forced to re-design (and loudly told everyone when that it did) the "boomerang" ps3 controller? If it hadn't been for all the online discussion that took place following the so-called "leaked" pictures, we would've been stuck with something everyone hated.
It's important for people (albeit mostly fanboys from both camps) to talk about which console is looking better, which features they hate, etc. so the companies can have time to make improvements on their products. I'm sure you would've hated the old controller and said "man, I wish people had told sony how much this thing sucked before they released it". So please STFU. - thashiz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Keep on Playstationing! Ka-yuck!
- 10scott10, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Sony just got owned
- yohan, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8If it's 'wasting energy' you ARE a fanboy. Good day sir.
- finn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4a motrion-sensing controller is nothing new, and {I seriously doubt] nether Sony NOR Nintendo were the first to think of it (no stolen points there), but what Nintendo IS doing is being the first to adopt the technology in the standard-issue come-with-the-system controller, making it a core part of their game design and marketing... and THAT is what deserves kudos (despite my skepticism about such type of controllers)
- rderveloy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I sincerely disbelieve that they didn't include rumble because it would "mess up the tilt sensing."
Sony saying that vibration support would, "mess up the tilt sensing," sounds just a little too convenient since they recently lost the lawsuit with Immersion Corp. over the right to use the rumble/force feedback technology.
Personally, it sounds to me like Sony is using this lame excuse to cover up their mistake. Sony should have just settled and licensed the technology like Microsoft and we'd have a much better controller. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4beachesandmusic = fairly horrible at this whole "technology" concept.
- Opteron, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Uhm, I think the founders of the site would disagree with you broomrape. Is the Science category JUST for tech related Science? No. Just like the GAMING section is there for all things gaming.
- dharm, on 10/12/2007, -5/+8i still cannot believe people are still making that comment
"their only defense was "Nintendo did it first with 3D!" which was wrong, because Starfox came before anything they did with 3D"
it was an anology. also starfox was not the first thing that was 3d.
the remark was a valid claim. gyroscopic technology (in mouses, controllers etc) has existed for ages. Nintendo puts similar technology in a remote, and they are called innovative. Sony puts tilt sensing in their ***** controller, and its called stealing. they didnt steal the idea from nintendo, they stole it from someone else, same as nintendo, thats how technology works.
the analogy was saying that it was absurd to say, just LIKE saying nintendo stole 3d from sony. While sony makes no claim to inventing 3d, they were one of the first consoles to be based on 3d graphics to hit mainstream. Just how nintendo doesnt claim to have invented gyroscopic motionsensing, but are going to be one of the first consoles to be based on that technology - SuperCujo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5"Trying to rip fellow diggers off"
Huh? If diggers weren't morons then they would go to another auction and pay market value. But it seems that diggers are stupid and will bid on anything at any price. Don't blame the seller for stupid buyers... - mbthompson, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Sony = public embarassment
- bart5986, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4How cool, I had this controller for the PS1, and it worked pretty well.
Its probably the technology that Sony is using in the PS3 controller that makes vibration stuff up. - TheGrizah, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I thought that the PS3's controller doesn't have rumble because they lost the law suit against them...or something like that?
I also recall Microsoft just settled out of court with the same company that sued Sony. Unless I'm horribly mistaken. This news really wasn't very old either, is Sony trying to erase the truth from the recent past with lies or did I read a lie and take it as the truth?
And Nintendo wasn't ever sued because they didn't use the same rumble technology as the other two companies? Am I correct? -
