- kasted, on 10/12/2007, -6/+60your blog sucks dick
- Zm3r3, on 10/12/2007, -4/+49Have you tried blowing on the cartridge?!
- spoooon, on 10/12/2007, -11/+46With the price of a PS3 is there really any reason you should have to "shove" or "nudge" a disc to make it work? Seems to me that its reasonable to ask for the system to work correctly.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -7/+29and how do you suppose he would get it out?
- spiralspirit, on 10/12/2007, -8/+30One malfunctioning ps3 does not a class action lawsuit make.
- weprin, on 10/12/2007, -5/+16It seems it's been a crap-shoot with these first-shipment systems. My friend has one and it works w/o any problems.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12Of course, this happens with iPods, iMacs, Macbooks, etc. too. But when that happens, you all get red in the face and pound on your keyboards that it was most likely caused by careless handling along the way.
Yup..ONE PS3 broken out of a couple hundred thousand. What an epidemic! - FetalSage, on 10/12/2007, -7/+16You're not supposed to push it in, who would want to pay $600 so that you have to force in your disc? That's just stupid.
And I doubt it's just 1. - t0mmmmmmm, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11600$ is not so expensive after all, just think of all the PS3 can do.
Sony has packed it with features: we've seen people cook eggs and BBQ with their PS3, some heat their room with it (the overheating problem is actually a feature), and now you can even shred your sensitive data with your PS3.
Now, that's multifunction! - NeoPlatonist, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10I am so glad I'm waiting a good while before trying to jump on the next generation of consoles. No matter how good these systems are supposed to be they are not worth waiting in lines for days for or dropping 3k for one on eBay just so you can be some of the first people to play them. Add on top of that the fact that these 1st generation units from any manufacturer are bound to be full of bugs. Get a life and be patient!
- gamerzworld, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Meh, one report of this. You can't really call the PS3 broken. One unit is not how meany ever consoles they have shipped so far. All consoles have had their fair share of problems on the first shipment. Nice to see that Sony is replacing his console.
- TheDiggMan, on 10/12/2007, -56/+62A piece of crap out of the box.
- eclectro, on 10/12/2007, -6/+12Normally it wouldn't be news. But at $600+ it makes it news. The creaking sounds it makes are especially effective
- socalrob, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8Well this is one out of 200,000+ systems that have done this. Or at least that someones mentioning. So thats not bad for a first run.
This is a problem though that you would come to expect from a slot fed disc drive. Sure it looks cool to have the slot over the tray, but still both have mechanical parts that can break down easily. Remember the PS2 with the smaller re-design went back to the pop up tray of the PSone and other CD based systems. Yes its cheaper to produce and the only thing that could go bad is the switch that tells it the lid is closed. you could just righ that though to make it think its always closed if it ever broke. - codelogic, on 10/12/2007, -15/+20Wow, a newly purchased electronic product that malfunctions out of the box. This has to be breaking news!!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1E7oBYXjOG4&eurl= - slaystench, on 10/12/2007, -5/+9Enough with this stuff. Electronics fail, get over it.
I've had a $1,000 dollar processor fail out of the box, the cost really doesn't matter. - davekg, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Simple, logical solution: Don't buy a console at launch!
- hchaudh1, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Isn't this the same story that has been on Digg for the last 4-5 days. TO put it in perspective, this is the one and only (reported) incident of the PS3 drive being faulty.
I have not heard of any other PS3's being broken except for the people who say "they have a friend whose PS3 was broken". At least it did not catch fire. - smallSHEEP, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Your Mom has a slot loading system?
- WasabiBomb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Jeez, this story got buried yesterday, so it gets resubmitted? Again, lame.
- SuperCUBE, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This is why you don't put your finger through the hole when inserting the disc.
- Piro786, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This was on PS3 updates yesterday. A lot of people there were saying that their was a disc already inside the console which is why we heard the spinning sound and which is why the disc wasn't going in...
- Ocelot13, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4no duh it didnt work, you are suppose to put a $20 in before the game...
then it will work perfectly... - Spankov, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5Still the failure rate is nowhere near the 360's.
I'm about the only one who's 360 hasn't broken in my circle of friends.2 guys I know are on their third one while another is on his fifth. Around 75% of people i know with 360s have had trouble with them and had to send them back. - slaystench, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I know, it's my opinion. That's not going to change because of a bunch of Sony bashers will digg me down.
- shockertwin, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3The reason is creaking could be because the the disk is stuck on something while it is being brough in. The hardware is pull the disk in is working properly. Maybe they didnt pull the old disk out? Maybe the drive has a manufacturing error, sony doesnt manufacture the drives, they jsut put them in. Maybe there is somethign onthe bottom of the disk.
Either way, no its not suprising. The 360 had a ton of problems on release, and the Wii also has errors. No big deal. Take it back, and get a new one. Posting videos of you purposly doing extensive damage is only a simple way of ensuring you wont get a return.
@slaystench
Dear lord. You just defended Sony. Hope you like your dugg down score. Apparently defending sony is illegal on digg. - halosniper7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1its like your mom...
- comradeTJH, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2well... PUSH it in then...
and remember - if it doesn't work with violence, you're just not using enough. - jellygraph, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Geeee, I wonder if Kotaku is going to cover this... even a brief mention... hah! who are we kidding?
- skoles, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I was in EB Games this morning and a kid was trying to return his for this exact reason. They told them he has to calls Sony because if they took it back there was no chance of getting it replaced before Christmas.
Also, I've been in 3 other electronic stores that have had PS3's on display. All were frozen up either on the MotorStorm screen or that wavey background w/no menus displayed. - 2shae, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Not a playstation fan but I have to say that it does look really nice
- jimcavoli, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wow. This, along with numb limbs (although you could just sit on it once you plug it in) from camping out for these things really makes you wonder why people don't know to wait about six months for the bugs to get worked out, and for the risk of getting attacked as you leave to go down.
Better yet, QuadSLI and 4 monitors. That's good stuff. - DJWaz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I don't see why people find this suprising. The PS2 may have looked kinda pretty, but it fell apart a lot. I had an ongoing feud with EB Games over the systems that they sold me.. The one that a drunk tripped on makes sence that it broke.. but my cat sat one one and it stopped working and i had three more that didn't work out of the box before i gave up on it all.
80% of the games for the PS3 will prolly be on the xbox360 anyways. And all the coolest prorietary games are going to be on the Wii anyways so i'm pretty sure i'm not alone in saying i won't bother with the ps3 - mr_bako2, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1again, how many times do i have to see these types of stories
WHY IS ONE PERSONS PROBLEM NEWS FOR THE WHOLE WORLD, THIS COULD HAVE HAPPENED TO ANY CONSOLE, and yet somehow it gets over 500 diggs? how the helllllll. - Ocelot13, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1they might, but im not twelve.
i guess you didnt see the uncyclopedia ps3 article... - mrhaines, on 10/12/2007, -10/+9I have a dream...where one day the word can live in harmony without the crap that is peddled by Sony. I HAVE A DREAM!
- bobbyi, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1The difference is that if your iPod is broken, you can get a new one quickly, whereas these guys may have to wait 6 months before they actually see another PS3.
- mr_bako2, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0i guess 12 year olds have all the answers these days huh?
- ReCkLeSsX, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Malfunctioning systems at launch?! Blasphemy.
- NitrousFlare, on 10/12/2007, -9/+7Good ol' sony..
- mbthompson, on 10/12/2007, -8/+5Wow, how disappointing.
/sarcasm
Hope he can get a replacement soon.
/sarcasm - korhojoa, on 10/12/2007, -9/+4Thank you, captain obvious!
- TheCheeks, on 10/12/2007, -9/+4If this happens to a LOT of people then yes its a problem. Mass manufacturing, of coarse there will be a few bad ones.
- mrhaines, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2Nobody cares about your blog.
- spoooon, on 10/12/2007, -17/+12Sony has all the money when one of their main competitors is Microsoft and they are just finishing paying for the largest electronics recall in history??
- halfgook, on 10/12/2007, -12/+6i'd be fkn pissed dropping all that cash on a machine and have it DOA. i can understand running into problems like these at launch, but having to wait 4+ weeks to get a new one AFTER i dropped my cash = no dice.
- 1310nm, on 10/12/2007, -12/+6Seems like none of these new consoles are getting QA before leaving the factory in a rush to get them to stores. What is our frothy-mouthed, gotta-have-it-now consumption getting us into?
- mucha7012, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1Well every console is gonna have their negatives to them. But what can you say.
- thehans, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1Somebody forgot to purchase their PS3 lube.
