- JaySherman, on 10/12/2007, -24/+174But... but rumble is last gen, Phil said it, it must be true :(
- SkippyDoorknob, on 10/12/2007, -15/+125And not only that, they said it could not be done because it would interfere with the motion sensors!
What other excuses did they give? - MouseCircus, on 10/12/2007, -14/+116The third excuse was that rumble was cut in order to lower production costs.

A video interview with Phil after this announcement where he is confronted with saying "last gen" (6:00).
His response:
"What do you expect me to say? We were in the middle of a lawsuit."
Basically, if Sony claimed they needed the rumble feature, Immersion could have used it in court and asked for even more money. - meshgiath, on 10/12/2007, -15/+64http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3157501
"the Sixaxis controller offers game designers and developers far more opportunity for future innovation than rumble ever did. Now, rumble I think was the last generation feature; it's not the next-generation feature."
Thanks Phil. You're not a walking bag of money fueled contradictions at all! Love ya buh-bye.
Dugg for Sony's unending denial that they said "fill-in-this-blank" in the first place. - Nobi-Wan, on 10/12/2007, -8/+56@ GawtMilk
"I also think it's funny that people insulting the PS3's cost are typing on computers that cost more than the PS3."
That's just an asinine comment. Computers are a necessity in this day in age. PS3's are a luxury and therefore should not be compared AT ALL to a computer.
Once the PS3 can have Adobe CS2, Dreamweaver, etc. and help me do graphic design you can bring up that argument. But until then don't be acting like the PS3 is the end all be all technology for human existance. It's a toy, and an expensive one at that. - JayD16, on 10/12/2007, -3/+42"The third excuse was that rumble was cut in order to lower production costs."
This one is actually true seeing as they were getting sued for using it... - Salgat, on 10/12/2007, -11/+33We are slamming them for making up all these damn lies and excuses instead of just flat out saying "We would like the rumble feature but are not legally allowed to use it." Understand?
- Scrappy1850, on 10/12/2007, -7/+28video games are SO last gen... ball in a cup FTW
- DanteDefiance, on 10/12/2007, -2/+23why spend another day not catching a ball in a cup when you can be catching a ball-in-a-cup?
- dpcdomino, on 10/12/2007, -4/+20Sony does seem to be taking some positive steps recently. I hope it is not too late.
- Klarth, on 10/12/2007, -3/+19I dunno, can you stop ***** leaning on the shift key all day?
- thatsmyaibo, on 10/12/2007, -31/+46Can't you guys ever be happy? First you slam them for not using the rumble now you slam them for trying to make people like you happy.
- andydumi, on 10/12/2007, -5/+19But when you add next gen rumble, then regular rumble is indeed last gen.
http://www.immersion.com/gaming/video_pc/next-gen/index.php
This is a more natural and more responsive method, with a variety of sensations being available over the surface of the controller (left side does something different than right, top/bottom). Also a variety of layers of sensation (multiple actuators acting out different things all at once).
So indeed, rumble is last gen. After all its been around for a decade with little if any improvement. And Immersion specifically says this is compatible with motion sensors, and it is not yet present in any controller. - chocobomog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13Ha, that's like saying Halo 3 will be on the 360 and the PS3. Sony owns the developer of GoW just like Microsoft owns Bungie. It won't happen.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14Yeah, right. A first-party, in-house, 100% Sony developer sells its game to the competition.
I'm getting warmed up for that snowball battle in Hell. - Scrappy1850, on 10/12/2007, -5/+16@gawtmilk
you are SURE? what are you basing this on? - SyDIGG, on 10/12/2007, -5/+16Screw rumble. The bigger news is God of War 3 will be on the PS3 in full 1080p glory.
- racazip, on 10/12/2007, -10/+19Let's give Sony a little credit here for listening (although it took a while...).
- xTRUMANx, on 10/12/2007, -16/+25They take out rumble cause they thought it was last gen/too expensive/been sued (pick which applies to you). Everybody complains. They decide to bring it back. Everybody complains. Just admit it straight up, it isn't about the games anymore to you lot, you hate Sony and if they sold the PS3 for a dollar the fanboy in you wouldn't allow you to buy it.
- darkamster07, on 10/12/2007, -8/+17God there is sooo much PS3 hate, all the consoles have their flaws, and Sony just righted one, cheer up a bit. I for one have hope for the PS3, after seeing HOME, and LittleBigPlanet. Remember when everyone was saying 360 was *****? remember all the side-by-side 360 and original Xbox comparison slides? give it some time for christ sake! In my opinion Sony redeemed themselves alot after GDC.
So stop all the "Wii roks! Sony is crap" rants. I love the Wii too, but it also has it's flaws (dated graphics, game drought, friend codes, no online games, no 3rd party goodness, etc.). Just learn to be patient. - ZeroMP, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Ohhhhh I didn't catch the ball in the cup - but it's okay though because the ball is on a string and attached to the cup.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12Oh my fscking god.
A PS3 troll with an anti-Kerry slant 2 years after the election.
Can you do me a favor and go get an emergency vasectomy? Otherwise I'm going to have trouble sleeping at night, knowing that ***** can still breed. - Ahnteis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7You could argue my GRAPHICS CARD is a game playing machine--and it is. (Honestly, I don't need it for anything but that.) However, the rest of the computer is a need for a hundred things the PS3 cannot do. So it's more like $300 to $600 comparison.
Running linux on a PS3? For kicks only. The processor isn't meant for general computing tasks and won't work as well as the ancient computer I use as my fileserver for those types of tasks. - JayD16, on 10/12/2007, -6/+13>"What do you expect me to say? We were in the middle of a lawsuit."
I expect you to not try to pull one over on the court.
Yes, because running to immersion with a briefcase full of money saying "we will do anything for rumble" makes for cheap PS3 controllers...
@ MikeD606
You act like Rumble is THAT big a deal. You can still play without it and probably not miss it that much. - silverwolfe, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8They can always patch existing games to support rumble, methinks.
- silverwolfe, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Chocobomog: Actually, the Wii motion sensors are internal as well. The external sensor bar is to control the pointing mechanism.
- directive0, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8What a comedy of errors. Still you have got to give them credit for coming around and finally putting the feature there, even though now its not really a release feature so not every developer will support it in every title. And whether you like Sony's console or not you have to admit rumble certainly doesn't take away from game play, so its good to see they're putting it in there for all the people who were bummed about it.
Despite all the nay saying Sony seems to be turning some of the problems around. Its nowhere near being my first choice for a console, but all the marketing blunders, PR disasters and problems it IS an interesting little machine and I wouldn't be upset if I saw more people getting one so I'd have a chance to play around with it at their house. - TCampbell76, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8They are obviously making this rumble controller as a second option to buy.
- MWeather, on 10/12/2007, -6/+12I'm typing this on a PS3 :)
- chocobomog, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7@MikeD
1. Since the system only comes with one controller, you would probably buy more controllers in the future anyways. If you already bought 4 of them even though very few games (1?) support all four currently then buying more probably won't affect you much since money is no object. Seriously, who buys 4 controllers at launch when they can't be used? At worse, sell them to someone who doesn't care about rumble and just wants more controllers.
2. Developers already decide whether or not to use rumble. Many PS2 games do not use rumble. Many PS3 games do not use motion sensors. If it will work in the game then they will add it. This only affects games already released which may have used rumble.
3. People will buy GoW 3 because they want to play it. I'm not going to wait on getting a rumble controller to play the game. Plus, since GoW 2 just came out, GoW 3 is still a few years off while rumble controllers will probably be out in 2007. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9>>And not only that, they said it could not be done because it would interfere with the motion sensors!
They didn't say it couldn't be done, they said they didn't do it because it interfered. Which may be true if knowing the expense of the licensing / deciding to screw Immersion out of the licences from the third party controller market for their console they stopped before putting the resources into fixing the interference.
And of course they will talk down what they don't have, look at microsoft with HD and more recently Home.
But who cares, they've worked things out, and this is only good for us. The tactile feedback of a button press being missing from motion control, the vibration should have something to offer to this gen. - silverwolfe, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Mike, that third prediction is just *****. A game's sales aren't gonna suffer because a rumble controller isn't available for it. I don't remember Wii game sales lacking when no one could get a hold of another remote in stores.
- Snakedal337, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I knew it was coming, now just all future games will support it.
Which is a real bitch because motorstorm would have ROCKED with it. - j_bellone, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8Awhile? Nintendo STILL doesn't have online gameplay. And we were bitching about rumble on a ***** controller that barely anyone notices nor cares about? Not to mention most people enjoying the fact that the controller is half as light as the predecessor.
- Cowtastic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5@Mike
Well, i don't have 4, I have 2! SO THERE..... dammit that was 50 bucks down the drain. Still, I'm happy that rumble is coming back, and so is Kojima, and if Kojima is happy, we're all happy. - MWeather, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6They were being sued in the first place. How exactly would they have done it?
- MikeD606, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7@GawtMilk
I buy games on VC because I already sold my NES/SNES. And even if I had one, I'd have to hook it up to an already cluttered entertainment center. Just click on the Wii menu, and off I go. To me that's worth $5-10. Also I get to play some games I couldn't buy when I was 10, cause I couldn't afford it at the time/parents wouldn't buy it for me. - directive0, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Okay fair enough, I beat call of duty the other day and ya the rumble did not MAKE the game.. but it was certainly not taking away from it. There were moments where the rumble joined with the blurring and shaking of the camera from a mortar blast added to my disorientation and for a brief second my disbelief had been suspended. Yes that sounds very lame, but I guess my point is that when properly implemented I find rumble to be a nice touch.
If someone held out a controller with and without the vibration feature and said to me "You can have either of these two controllers, FOR FREE, which will it be?". Its no question I'd choose the one with. But I certainly wouldn't want a controller with features removed to facilitate the rumble, which is what Sony's reasons for removing it were apparently. Nor would I pay more for a controller with rumble. As you said it is indeed a gimmick, but I like it and I think it has a place in console gaming. - Xarou, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Either get rid of your caps, or Shift x5 will help you out.
- Avalontor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4You do know about the lawsuit, right?
- DollaDollaBill, on 10/12/2007, -6/+9@xturmanx
Dude, its Digg, fanboy mentality and 360 zealots, you are 100%right - Diggtatorship, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"They take out rumble cause they thought it was last gen/too expensive/been sued (pick which applies to you). Everybody complains. They decide to bring it back. Everybody complains."
A more accurate statement would be:
They take out rumble cause they thought it was last gen/too expensive/been sued (pick which applies to you). Everybody complains. They decide to bring it back. Everybody has a good laugh at their expense, but agrees that bringing back rumble was a good move.
Lets face it, people don't like being lied to, or treated like idiots. How stupid did Sony think we were? Everybody knew they were full of *****, and now that they've fessed up to it, they're going to catch some flak for it. In the end they did the right thing and listened to the consumer. It looks like they've really adopted a new strategy in the last few weeks. They're actually trying to build a product around the wants of the consumer instead of trying to tell the consumer what they want. - ReCkLeSsX, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Who cares what happened before, as long as there a controller with rumble and God of War 3, I could care less!
- chocobomog, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5I stand corrected.
- koabel, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7Didn't Sony say that they'd replace controllers once the batteries die? Early adopters will get the rumble eventually.
- ibeetle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Why not? Capcom re-released Resident Evil with rumble when Sony added it to the Playstation. Hell they re-released RE every year. Resident Evil. Resident Evil with rumble. Resident Evil "Director Cut".
- raeanin, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Meh... I wont be buying one. I like the light weight, long battery life and motion control. I don't know why anyone bitched in the first place because their controller didn't vibrate. Vibrating hands don't make you feel like your driving a car/fighting/etc. It's lame.
- Kinsbane, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"..came off stage after announcing that God of War 3 on the PS3 would fully support vibration force feedback through a revised PS3 controller!"
Since when are rumble and force feedback the same thing? - chocobomog, on 10/12/2007, -17/+19@salgat
"We are slamming them for making up all these damn lies and excuses instead of just flat out saying "We would like the rumble feature but are not legally allowed to use it." Understand?"
Yet none of their excuses were lies, and they couldn't say that quote because it could be used against them in court.
1. "Rumble = last gen" - rumble indeed was featured last gen, and they tried something different this gen.
2. "Rumble messes up motion sensors" - it actually does this, but Immersion has found a way around it (probably by not having the two features used simultaneously).
3. "Rumble costs more" - They were being sued for using it last gen, if they used it again this gen without permission it would have cost them much more. -
