- SfOwnsLa, on 10/11/2007, -20/+85Unethical? Illegal? BS this is awesome, obvious written by an xbot. Why can't I share my games that I bought with others? This is great for all PS3 owners, you can share any game up to 5 times, which has been know since launch! So spread the love!
- Nerfdude, on 10/11/2007, -10/+39i like how whenever a story about the RIAA or MPAA or DRM shows up, it's "***** this *****, piracy rulz, pirat3z 4 LYFE!!!!", but the second PS3 owners find a way to share programs, it's "OMG THAT'S ILLEGAL, ***** YOU PLAYSTATION OWNERS". the hypocritical hive mentality here is ridiculous.
- Alegoo92, on 10/11/2007, -7/+32So I guess now we're agreed--
DRM sucks, but when people share downloads, its not only unethical but satanic.
Thanks for keeping me up to date.
Alex - sholmes1019, on 10/11/2007, -5/+29diggthiscrap,
Not at all. Your orange analogy is not accurate. When you're sold an orange, you're sold the actual property which is the orange, so you're free to do anything you want with it. When you're sold a downloadable game, you're sold the right to play that game - otherwise known as a "license." You have no right to copy, alter, or do anything other than to play it (and whatever other rights the license may give you).
A closer analogy would be: if an owner of an apple orchard sells you a ticket to pick apples all day, can you just stand at the gate once you're in and hand the ticket back to your friend so he can come in too? And then that friend hands it to another friend and so on. By the end of the day, your one ticket has granted 5 people access to the orchard when it was only intended to grant you access.
You're right about data being different, but these licenses are in no way "old." They are written with the express intent of regulating the specific use that the PS3 online store contemplates. In addition, the Digital Millenium Copyright Act specifically prohibits copying data that is licensed solely to you. - aegis9975, on 10/11/2007, -3/+26Sony America's Jack Tretton has said that game sharing of its games for up to 5 people is an "advantage" that Playstation Network has over the rivals. They could have locked in the DL to one PS3 if they wanted, clearly its considered a feature. Sony themselves seem to be encouraging this; nothing illegal or unethical about this.
- dtd00d, on 10/11/2007, -16/+33Illegal perhaps but certainly not unethical. Sharing is caring.
- andydumi, on 10/11/2007, -0/+16Sony announced that players who download games from PlayStation's online shop can share them on up to five other PS3 machines. If a player logs into his PlayStation 3 account on a friend's system, he can download any game he has already purchased. "You can send that content to four other friends for that initial investment," said Tretton. "We want to get the game in as many hands as possible."
"It's not about generating profits at each and every interaction with the consumer," he said. "I think that really offsets the argument that says, 'Wow, that's a really pricey system.'"
From an interview with Jack Tretton, from SCEA. Discussion over, its endorsed by Sony, and there are rumors of a better sharing method (send it to a friend) coming at some point. - codemonkey420, on 10/11/2007, -6/+21I believe the reason you cannot share your games with others is sorta like how licenses work :) When you buy a game you are really buying a license to a copy of the electronic download of a game. No room to share those bits "legally" unless you count stealing into the equation.
- formulathree, on 10/11/2007, -0/+14For people that don't understand PSN game sharing. Here is the Playstation.com answer explaining the fully endorsed procedure by Sony:

Kinda odd if you ask me.
- formulathree, on 10/11/2007, -3/+15http://www.eurogamer.net/article.php?article_id=69459
You realize that there are hundreds of articles proclaiming this right? Try google next time. - hanzel26, on 10/11/2007, -3/+14uummm.....they're not stopping us.....they're letting us. get educated a little more. And i repeat, "game sharing between up to 5 friends" is allowed. taken directly from Sony. you can split the charge however you want.
- formulathree, on 10/11/2007, -3/+13
The fact that they're not using dedicated servers is all the proof you need. - formulathree, on 10/11/2007, -4/+14
Looks like you're too stupid to read the PSN FAQ. - Marvelboy, on 10/11/2007, -5/+14Whatever happened to the Laserdisk? Everything's better on the Laserdisk.
- hanzel26, on 10/11/2007, -5/+14yeah, bury this. i mean, if anyone has a sense of knowledge, they would know that Sony themselves have SAID that people will be able to share downloadable game with up to 5 other people, and CAN SPLIT THE CHARGE. yes, imagine that. whatever this site is, its crappy.
- theonlyvlad, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9Wow... guys... c'mon. Reading Digg is becoming stranger and stranger. Now, I always thought DRM was bad because it prevented YOU the user from using your files how you want. That makes sense. You should be able to copy the movie you buy to your computer, iPod, whatever, for you and your family to enjoy...
But since when did this movement of freedom involve not paying content creators for the work they do? I mean, I know y'all love your open source, and it sure is great that some guy in some country wrote 300 webcam drivers for free for Linux, but to make most sorts of content that's good (especially media) costs an investment of time and resource.
Now, if Sony is allowing people to share games 5 times, that's good, that's neat, that's their business model. But let's not scream about how you're entitled to everything for free. The poster in the end makes the best point: if you really enjoy the game, pay and support the provider, because hey, they'll make more games.
There's no something for nothing. Some of you guys amaze me. - cwilli14, on 10/11/2007, -2/+9if ps3 sharing is keeping food off developers tables. Bit torrent, usenet etc..... is burning down their houses.
- roxya, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8Uhhh everyone I know who played CaC absolutely loves it. Be gone!
- magical1492, on 10/11/2007, -3/+10All of you people saying that we want DRM gone so we can pirate it is incredibly ignorant. Notice how DRM has stopped piracy very VERY little? Because pirates crack it or find a way around it. I don't want DRM gone so I can share it. I want DRM gone so, if I was to buy a movie off the Apple store, I can watch it on my iPod, burn it to a DVD for my TV, play it on my computer, and play it on my Creative Zen. With DRM, I have to buy the same file multiple times. Who wants to do that?
- formulathree, on 10/11/2007, -7/+13
Well more like they couldn't support more than 16. - twodayslate, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7Another reason to buy the PS3 if you ask me!
- FriendsOfWario, on 10/11/2007, -11/+17At least if you console ***** out like the *cough* xbox 360 *cough* you dont have to worry about being signed in only to access the content you already downloaded... Once again, why Sony is a more respectable company in the next-gen wars..
BTW Laserdisc rocks - DarkJC, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6I can't believe there's so much controversy over this.
The game sharing on the PS3 is PERMITTED BY THE LICENSE. People aren't cracking the DRM and sharing with their friends. It's fine. End of story. - formulathree, on 10/11/2007, -6/+11Well, it is when you're not paying $50 per year for Xbox live and only 20% for downloadable games and content. You see, on PSN, they don't nickel and dime you.
- FriendsOfWario, on 10/11/2007, -7/+11whats more disturbing is the person who thought adding HDMI to a 360 makes it 'elite'...
- ScrabbyDoo, on 10/11/2007, -7/+11Yeah, sure you do, mate. That's the typical digg response. And I'm sure ALL the music that you listen, movies you watch and the programs in your computer now is legit. I don't care about bitorrent, bitorrent is just a protocol. The problem is people's sense of entitlement in using using stuff without properly rewarding the author for it. Face it, millions of people worldwide now think they don't have to pay for this sort of stuff because "sharing is caring" *****. how about sharing some of your money to people who you owe.
All these means is that the real talented developers will get out of the business because it just doesn't pay. I've gone out coding and now started a health company, because the customers are more grateful. - jacksons98, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4@hoffer What's not smart about it? Personally I've been thinking of picking up another PS3 for the TV upstairs, my wife always steals the good TV downstairs before I get home :) Anyway if I end up getting another one it will be nice to have a way to have my PSN store games on both machines without repurchasing.
Now I do think your an idiot if you give your account to "some kid" on a forum, but how is that Sony's problem. - formulathree, on 10/11/2007, -14/+18Just one more reason PSN is better than Xbox live. The PSN people pay 1/5 the price for downloadable games. Oh and did I mention free online play, dedicated servers and 40+ multiplayer?
I hear 16 players is the maximum you'll get on Halo 3. Looks like their multiplayer code isn't next gen :) - ScrabbyDoo, on 10/11/2007, -4/+8Better marketing, economy coming out of recession, more exposure, American Idol, shift in consumer trends, iTunes effect, more disposable income, it can any number of million things. If there is a rise in sales its despite of illegal sharing, not because of it.
- ScrabbyDoo, on 10/11/2007, -11/+15As a developer who earns a living by coding programs, I'm heartened by the fact you care so much to use the product of my hard work without giving me back anything.
- treed, on 10/11/2007, -10/+13nerfdude:
DRM sucks, because it prevents me from using what I have paid for in a manner I choose.
Piracy sucks, because it provides unearned benefit to the pirate.
There is no hypocrisy here. Not all of us who hate DRM hate it because we want to pirate. Some of us really do just want to watch that DVD on our Linux box. - SfOwnsLa, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5No you can't, borrowing does not equal having two copies.
- formulathree, on 10/11/2007, -10/+13So in addition to paying $50-$60 US a year for Xbox live they also make you pay full price for downloadable games and content? Wow, that is pathetic.
- NeoTechni, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3"what does Halo 3 having 16 players have to do with Xbox Live? "
P2P means less players possible than dedicated servers.
Live uses P2P, PSN uses dedicated servers
Perfect Dark Zero is 16 players
"What games have 40+ players on PS3, *****?"
Come back when you're not being an ignorant jackass. Resistance was awesome.
"The worst part about this is that reading comments on this ticks me off "
Comments like yours piss me off. If you don't want trolls, don't be one.
You'll note no part of my post was bashing the 360 - fallenone05, on 10/11/2007, -4/+6Sharing "Super Rubadub" is unethical, sharing "Calling all Cars" is AWESOME
- formulathree, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3@seraph741
Warhawk has been confirmed to have 32 simultaneous players and dedicated servers. - NeoTechni, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Anyone find it ironic that this is a complaint over Sony being lax with DRM?
- NeoTechni, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Yes it is unethical. It's like you selling artwork/music online, someone buying 1 jpg/mp3, and giving it to all his friends.
No it's not illegal though - razor150, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3The original Xbox has games that support 32 players, and I believe Perfect Dark Zero supports 32. Bungie choose 16 because that is what they feel best fits their game, not because of any limitations.
- mrRB, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4Album sales are going up because more people are buying albums. Just because sales are rising doesn't mean piracy isn't hurting it. It's like saying that a store that has rampant shoplifting, yet is still making money, isn't affected by the shoplifting.
Yes, I know IP isn't tangible. I'm just illustrating the logic here. Move along. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1@ sholmes1019
It was like 3 am when I wrote that, my bad :( - SteveMax, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2"In addition, the Digital Millenium Copyright Act specifically prohibits copying data that is licensed solely to you."
This legislation does not exist in most of the countries in the world, so I'm not sure why it would limit the ability of (say) an Argentinian or Japanese to share data. - cliffski, on 03/02/2009, -0/+1grow up
- schroeder, on 10/11/2007, -7/+8"Share and enjoy,"
- cliffski, on 03/02/2009, -0/+1care to share your bank balance then?
retard. - formulathree, on 10/11/2007, -10/+10Another anally satisfied Xbox fan-tard. Taking it up the ass like there's no tomorrow.
- Skwerl, on 10/11/2007, -5/+5@ sholmes1019
While I agree with what you say, the way software is sold doesn't make it clear you're purchasing only a license. I can't remember ever seeing software, or a game that states clearly on the box that you're buying a license. You can only find out once you open the product, and read through all the included material in the packaging.
There should be laws designed to protect people from misleading packaging. Consumers need to be told upfront that they are buying a license, and not property. The packaging should be labeled clearly on the exterior that you're not actually buying anything, the same goes for packaged music. - seraph741, on 10/11/2007, -4/+4@ formulathree, what does Halo 3 having 16 players have to do with Xbox Live? Call of Duty 3 has more than 16 players online. What games have 40+ players on PS3, *****? Isn't that all? (That's a serious questions, I have no clue).
@everyone, isn't this old news? I knew about this like.....since launch. My friends been doing this forever. And also, wtf? PS3 fanboys are ***** defensive as hell. Just because your system isn't selling doesn't mean you have to jump on every little positive "news" (i put quotes around this because its old *****) and get so freaking defensive. I don't understand. PSN downloads are cheaper, lets all go get PS3's because we can share PSN games and spend only 1/5 the price! Just wait till this gets widespread and developers stop developing for PSN because they are only getting 1/5 the profit they can get on the Xbox360. Xbox doesn't do this because they don't have to, people buy their ***** anyway.
The worst part about this is that reading comments on this ticks me off even though I could care less about the console wars, I'll stick with whatever console I think is best at the moment. If that happens to change, I'll jump ship right away, jesus, its all about the games. - seraph741, on 10/11/2007, -3/+3@formulathree, wtf?
everyone just stop talking, formulathree is right about everything, he knows best apparently, PS3 rules, Xbox360 is *****, Live sucks balls.
Alright, time to go hit up some more GRAW2. -
