- jdaniel284, on 10/11/2007, -10/+63I used to be a 360 fan. However, I recently got the three red lights of death, paid $140 to send it in. Then Microsoft announced the warranty extension for three years and a "refund" for all those that paid for three red light repairs. I called up to see when I could expect my refund, thinking they would simply reverse the credit card charges. They told me I WOULD NOT be receiving a refund because the service center "corrected" the diagnosis to "freezing" instead of "red lights of death". It is the most dishonest thing I company has done to me in quite awhile. A BBB report just lead to an obnoxious Microsoft bitch calling me up telling me how they were not going to refund my $140.
It took Microsoft 2 months to send me a scratched up refurb that had sticker residue all over it.
PS3 all the way from here on out. - Harrison88, on 10/11/2007, -4/+30How's your 19th Xbox 360 working out for you?
- Bodhesatva, on 10/11/2007, -6/+30Good news for PS3 owners.
- olddirtycr, on 10/11/2007, -3/+26AHARHARHARHRAH
And I'm sure the 10.8 million who bought an xbox 360 and realized that all 10.8 million have design faults and will eventually break are very happy.
And I'm sure the 6+ million who bought the Wii not realizing that there are no games out for it or any coming out for a few months are very happy. - MoeB, on 10/11/2007, -3/+22Wow that's a horrible story. Obviously MS doesn't care about their customers and just wants to clear out this whole red ring thing.
- jacksons98, on 10/11/2007, -2/+19@Snowflake Just a FYI you can upgrade your PS3 easily with an external USB drive or 2.5" sata drive. Or you can take an external SATA drive and plug it into the internal SATA connector. Either way storage on the PS3 is not an issue.
- spikes, on 10/11/2007, -2/+18The UT engines past UE1 don't allow executable content in mods and mutators anymore. The client loads whatever mods the server tells it to. Unless someone can get the PS3 to run an executable to tap into the games engine like on the PC, its not so easy.
- DesireCampbell, on 10/11/2007, -8/+22I love how this is news. You mean I get updates and mods for free? And I can play online?
Welcome to 1997, consoles. - blackholemonkey, on 10/11/2007, -3/+16I've been a Sony fan since PSX but i bought a 360... riding the next gen hype. After TWO, count em TWO new consoles, including the first one, which broke down a little less then a week after i bought it i was done with MS
- lesty420, on 10/11/2007, -1/+14I really don't think that the size of the hard drive will become an issue for mods 20-80gigs is a decent amount of space for mods. You can also use an external hard drive so you can back-up the mods you don't play often
- AwesomeMonster, on 10/11/2007, -1/+14counter strike was bought by valve, then it was charged as a standalone game. Way to be a smart ass.
- JayD16, on 10/11/2007, -2/+13It already runs linux...what more could you possibly want?
- lacronicus, on 10/11/2007, -1/+11while i do admit that this is a bit unnecessary, none fo the other articles went into How ti would happen. the others simply let it go at "it will happen," leaving us to wonder whether sony will require people to dl from an official site, throguh the ps3 ut3, or whatever. this makes it plain that you can just put it on a mem stick and pop it in. whether that is newsworthy is debatable, but it is more than what we already knew. im relieved for their sake that they dont have to upload it to transfer it across the room. that tehy arent allowed to use a homw network is disappointing, but understandable.
- JayD16, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9I really wonder how real that 10.8 number is. If people have had to buy a new xbox the install base isn't that big.
- jacksons98, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9@jdaniel284 That totally sucks dude. Sound like Microsoft though. My IT department called them for some questions on SQL Server a few months ago because they couldn't get it to do what we needed and before you can talk to anyone they ask for a credit card. No problem right?? Well we tell them our situation and they tell us its a "known issue." Guess what they still charged our credit card for the tech support call.
- EuphopiaB, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9Hacks are background processes that use the system memory to either alter or break into game data variables. They aren't game mods, and making it easy to make mods isn't going to make it any easier to hack.
- Zeppelin68, on 10/11/2007, -3/+10I'm sure the people with melting xbox's will be too.
- HolyChimp, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7Allow 3rd party mods in games? Allow KB/Mouse control in games? Allow USB stick to be used as memory cards?
Any of these things would benefi the consumer. - blackholemonkey, on 10/11/2007, -3/+10Have you been skipping video games for the past 3 years. this is in fact news due to the "recent" (and thats stretching it) media trend of charging us an arm and a leg for any downloadable content
- gwinerreniwg, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6Yea, UT fans are pissed about Halo. ROFL! Realistically we see it for what it is - MS' way of selling consoles and OS (after all you need Vista, right?). BTW, I'll bet your console won't play "Duke Nukem Forever"!
- h4mx0r, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6Valid argument, but I just wanted to point out that DesireCampbell was probably just saying that had you been using a PC, you would have been experiencing the same thing long ago. The fact that consoles are only just now getting it for free is well... It is honestly kind of showing that consoles still haven't caught up to PC standards.
- nonsequitor, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6He wants to be able to steal games like with a hacked XBOX, duh ;)
Personally I'm waiting for the F/OSS killer app that drives me to buy the system, my hacked XBOX just can't process compressed 720p video. I want a HTPC which can also play games. Until some major price cuts happen and maybe a slimmer/cooler model is released, I won't be buying one. - JayD16, on 10/11/2007, -3/+8You can play with mouse and keyboard on the PS3. The only difference is if you have a $2k computer it might look better then the PS3.
- rainergamer, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Halo has absolutely NOTHING on UT. Never has, never will. I'll try UT2007 with my Sixaxis, but I might pick up a keyboard/mouse, or even maybe that new FragFX doodad. Looks a little odd, but it must be decent.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5PC gamers are pissed about not having Halo? Not even close. I still dont even care for Halo series. I've been playing better multiplayer and better storyline'd fps games on the pc years before halo was even on the xbox. The only reason Halo is so big is because it was the best FPS on any console at that time.
- Sniper, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4It's already been said it will support keyboard + mouse
- onidraky, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4I'm so pissed I don't even own Halo or Halo 2 for the Xbox I own as well. Yeah, hugely pissed, I can't believe them!
Oh, btw, I still run brand new games on a 2 year old PC. Not everyone owns a Dell they paid way too much for. - jacenat, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4microsoft won't open xbl.
forget it. - Yellow2k7, on 10/11/2007, -3/+7Some people just prefer console gaming, most people I know assume PC gaming is very expensive and indeed it can be but not as much as they think. This is a great addon for the PS3 version, something I believe will force Microsoft to act.
- rainergamer, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5This is news, because Sony's approach to online is pretty much "we will give you whatever you want for free, except in specific cases where the company that makes the game wants to charge for their additional content," whereas Microsoft institutes a fee on everything produced, whether the company who made the game wants it or not.
- jacksons98, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5It might now that Sony has put the pressure on Microsoft. See knodi you should be thankful to Sony. Before Rainbow 6:Vegas on PS3 you had to pay for the same content on X360 and now that mods will be available for PS3 it ***might*** happen for X360.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Honestly, who the hell is even going to have over 20 gigs of Mods?
- Modulo, on 10/11/2007, -2/+6and this matters for what reason?
- gwinerreniwg, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4If the "openness" of UT3 on the PS3 ultimately sells more copies, it may cause MS to reexamine their software certification process, which is essentially what is keeping user maps/mods off UT3 on XBOX.
- madformadness, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3This is the ONLY way it should be.
- yournamehere, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3did anyone ask who will be hosting this content? here's what it says:
"It's unclear what other methods of delivery there will be for user-created mods, maps, and skins, and it's unclear if you'll be able to use the PlayStation Network to upload your content or if you'll have to rely on the PC community."
sooooo, content will be downloadable but aside from a memory stick there is no one place to get it from? - patm1987, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4afaik, the ps3 is perfectly capable of using a usb mouse/keyboard (and I know it uses a keyboard in the web browser at least). So it's just a matter of building it in the game. I remember in an interview (maybe the one quoted in the text in the story) that they were even pondering cross platform pc/ps3 support since they used the same network stack. Allowing it or disallowing it would be purely a design decision if I am understanding the situation correctly. In that case I'd expect usb mouse/keyboard support through the ps3's usb ports, otherwise, it would probably be better to leave the ps3's ut to the gamepad. The controller would control terribly imho unless they do some pretty trixy stuff with controls and aim adjustment, but it would make the game more fair since someone new to the series is probably less likely to use a mouse/keyboard on the ps3 (or even know that could work), and face it, the ps3 userbase will probably not be the normal ut fanbase who will all buy it on pc (that may just be a generalization based on what I personally would do, but it would seem accurate).
And note that I heard nothing of mouse and keyboard support in the game in any developer interviews or previews, so I'm also assuming that Sony makes it moderately simple to access random inserted usb devices and that either the code would be nearly identical to pc or epic feels it's necessary to put in the extra work... those are some big assumptions. - Keyblade, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3"For those of you hardcore PC purists, mouse and keyboard controls will be available in the PS3 version through the USB ports on the front of the machine." Yes: http://ps3.gamespy.com/playstation-3/unreal-tournament-2007/771700p1.html
- xerus, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3lol exaggerated PC prices!
- Kypt, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3You're kidding right..? I was actually a bit upset that that piece of crap made it to PC. It may be ok on consoles (mediocre comes to mind but to each their own) due to its low pace etc. On pc is ridiculously slow and boring. When you have precision, slow targets become boring. Nothing like the speed of a fast shooter (UT, Quake series) to accelerate the neurons. If slow shooters are your type, choose a better one such as CS (i personally don't like it but understand its strengths in its type)
- DeejayKnight, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Oh, so basically you're admitting that you didn't know about the PS3 having keyboard/mouse controls? Most people that make a comment like that would claim it's because UT was meant to be played with kb/m controls, but even that's been confirmed since March:
"For those of you hardcore PC purists, mouse and keyboard controls will be available in the PS3 version through the USB ports on the front of the machine."
Double inkage for proof: http://kotaku.com/gaming/gamespy/ps3-ut3-supports-keyboard-mouse-sixaxis-243125.php and http://ps3.gamespy.com/playstation-3/unreal-tournament-2007/771700p1.html - charlescheese, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3I for one will be buying UT3 on PS3. With the Frag FX console gaming works just as well as PC gaming and I can play it in 1080p on 46" Bravia...heaven if you asked me.
- LMN8R, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Stupid post. Mods have absolutely nothing to do with cheating. Two completely different types content creation.
- olddirtycr, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5I'm sure most PC owners have a usb mouse/keyboard or a bluetooth mouse/keyboard...
- HolyChimp, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4he said USB OR bluetooth. If you're still on the old PS/2 connectors (like this keyboard) then you are too old skool to own a PS3!
- iamteamc, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2WOW, I'd rather have free user created content than pay for the one map pack that will get realased 6 months to a year after its original release. When have addons ever costed 50cents? Is there a bargin bin or clearance section I'm not seeing in XBOX Live or PSN? Most addons I've found are around 5-10 bucks, for additional maps, or playable characters.
I really think you should buy both consoles, if you can, and it sounds like you have a pretty awesome high paying job to WANT to throw money down on add-ons. I have both (360 and PS3) and I like not having to be defensive when one does something better than the other, or which one has an exclusive and the other doesn't.
I really dont know why you'd even bring up stealing, having free user created content isn't stealing. I think that alot of user created content has been top-notch and has been some of the most creative add-ons or maps i've ever experienced. It's called open source.
And its awesome. - chubbybubba, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I was a big PC gamer...the whole community feel and ability to download mods... it extended the life of games. When Xbox live came out and I gave it a try I was hooked, I mean having a friend list and playing coop games where everyone had a mic was awesome....Then I heard about how you couldn't transfer games you purchased to a new machine... Then all the stories about Microsoft banning XBox's for life... It suddenly dawned on me how XBox live WAs in fact taking your rights of purchase away and monitoring you...That's wrong... If Sony wants to market itself as the "open" console I'm all for it.... I'll still play my xbox360 but for games that offer free content, I'm gonna buy a PS3.
- Izacus, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2According to BeyondUnreal, the 360 version will have free mods and maps too. By Epic they said, that they're working hard with Microsoft to allow free mods and this is the sole reason for the delay of 360 version.
- GfunkGbuss, on 10/11/2007, -6/+8I'm not saying consoles can't do a fine job of playing FPS's (I have a 360 that I bought from a kid for $50 and repaired it and play Perfect Dark: Zero and GRAW with my buddies), but PC's are still the optimal platform. Who cares if you can hook a mouse and keyboard to your PS3 if you're still playing from a couch, because that won't be much better unless you have a desk. Also, almost every console fanboy I've talked to blows PC pricing way out of proportion because they expect to drop the dough on a pre-built system from Best Buy instead of build their own system. I can guarantee you could build a PC that can play any game made for both system as good or better for the same price that a PS3, mouse, keyboard, and the screen you play it on. Plus, most people also forget to figure in the price of the PC you may already have in your house. All of my console fan-boy friends still have PC's for other things, and they could have taken the money they spent on their consoles and used that to add to the PC they already had to make a machine.
And a 6-month shelf life, 'eh? I'm sorry that you don't know how to use graphics settings. I have built PC's that have lasted longer playing new games than the life of many consoles, as long as you know how to efficiently run your machine and what settings you might need to tone down. Granted, you might not want to have to run a game at minimum settings, but if it still allows you to play new games smoothly and competitively, so what? I'd rather have fun than look at individual leaves in the trees of my games.
Also, if you're wanting to do any modding yourself, you will need a PC anyway, so why not just use it for both?
Don't get me wrong, if you just want something that you can just buy, rip it out of the box, slap it in your living room and play, a console will probably be fine. However, if you want to actually use some technological know-how to make a custom, superior machine that can do so much more than that little black or white box sitting in your living room, why not try building your own gaming PC? -
