- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -42/+181I really really REALLY hope that I'm not the only one who was LAUGHING while watching this video. Why was I laughing? Because these guys finally FIGURED it out! If you don't show HUD graphics overlayed on top of your promotional videos, everyone will call ***** on you! What these people fail to realize is that camera movements STILL give it away as non-true-gameplay.
Oh, I'm not saying that this isn't exactly what the finished game will probably look like graphics wise, but this is NOT what YOUR experience while PLAYING the game will look like. It will NOT look this cinematic, it will not have such smooth movement.
Yes, these may be the same textures and graphics resources that the final game uses. Yes, the sound effects and probably the physics of those destroyed boxes at the end of the video will PROBABLY be in the final game. But no, when you're playing the game, it will NOT look like this.
Today's videogame trailers (from any game publisher) are a sham, and I'm seriously fed up with it! They either ***** COMPLETELY by showing CG cutscenes from the game (these usually don't even use the game engine to be generated), or they ***** by showing video that LOOKS like a game but actually isn't (Killzone, et al).
I'm tired of this. And I'm tired of most of my fellow gamers not giving a ***** and gobbling it up. - birdadderley, on 10/12/2007, -29/+97Excuse me while I go and play with my Wii.
- Mejogid, on 10/12/2007, -9/+40How do you know that?? The PS3 isn't even out yet.
- jamesong, on 10/12/2007, -14/+42but anything with PS3 gets more diggs
- xboxing, on 10/12/2007, -12/+39I agree. I played through Call of Duty 2 twice of on the 360 and it looks pretty much identical to that, graphics wise. Due to the hype about the PS3, I guess I was expecting more. That being said, the 360 titles are getting immensley better than the launch titles, now that its been out for a bit...Fight Night 3, GRAW, Oblivion...I'm sure the PS3 will have the same ramp up time. Nonetheless, I'm sure it's going to be just as awesome as the previous titles in the series.
- DaWolfman, on 10/12/2007, -5/+28Direct link to the video (needs VLC player):
http://ps3movies.ign.com/ps3/video/article/703/703695/bia_full_trailer_042806_flvhighwide.flv - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -20/+41To all those who say The CAMERA gives it away:
Anyone who has ever made a game, in 3d or otherwise understands that a camera can be scripted and does not indicate realtime or not.
That appears to NOT be prerendered, and there are all sorts of visual queues that indicate it IS realtime. Perhaps the script is not. - happyfundave, on 10/12/2007, -19/+40Holy crap that looks intense.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -9/+27Looks good, but it's just another war game.
- clumsyninja, on 10/12/2007, -2/+19It's the video format it's in. If you downloaded the quicktime version of IGN weekly last friday, you would see this.
- timdorr, on 10/12/2007, -21/+37Your doubt is based on the fact that the camera movement looks too smooth? Have you considered the fact that maybe they played the game with the intent to record a trailer, and, in that case, that they would not play it exactly normally? Sure, real gamers aren't going to turn their character around slowly like that, but I don't see anything there that would indicate there wasn't someone behind the wheel. They obviously don't just do this in one run; they want to get it right. So, several takes were made until they landed on the one that showed off their game the best. Why is that so hard to believe?
- lazyguy, on 10/12/2007, -5/+19Uh wtf.
Theres a "let the guy fall on your sholders" button and a "take a grenade, but not the gun" button? - ptoast, on 10/12/2007, -5/+19Your PC could handle GRAW and Oblivion two years ago?
HAhah..hahahah... whew. Funny guy! - mtrip, on 10/12/2007, -11/+24I'm pretty sure it's going to be on 360 also.
- Spanca, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13It could just be a scripted event. Plenty of games have that sort of thing where it looks like you're still in game but you're not actually controlling one little bit like that.
- GarethSaxby, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14http://ps3.ign.com/articles/703/703485p1.html for the original article. It talks about some interesting stuff, and theres' a video interview too. The trailer isn't a representation of the final quality of the game though, it's completely orchestrated, but whether or not it's pre-rendered or rendered on the fly doesn't matter. Wait for ingame footage of someone playing it before you pass judgement. However, does anyone remember the original E3 05 GRAW footage compared to the footage at X05? Massive difference, and we all though the E3 stuff was real. Before you say anything, think if you're being too naive by going along with the developers in saying it's real time. This is slated for only a 2007 Q1 release, meaning it still comes under the first wave of game titles.
- TheCount, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14Forget whether it's prerendered or not, am I the only one getting tired of the damned WWII games or what? Enough already, we get it.
- Mejogid, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12Flash is not the codec - it is a method of encapsulation. Saying flash is 'crappy' is like sayin 'mov' is crappy, despite the fact that it can include any number of formats including mpeg and h.264. Furthermore, HD has nothing to do with the codec or encapsulation method - i can have an hd animated gif if i really want.
- HappyScrappy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12NanoStuff, you couldn't be more wrong.
HD isn't "inherently 960x540".
720p is 1280x720, 60 times a second. No joke, no *****.
You must be referring to 1080i. 1080i is 1920x1080, 30 interlaced frames a second. Interlacing means not every line comes in every frame. So some people try to say 1080i is 1920x540, because that's the amount of data in a field. The TV is supposed to keep the data from both fields and interlace them, so the final resolution is indeed 1920x1080, just the spatial resolution suffers.
So you are doubly wrong. You cut down the horizontal for no reason at all, and you incorrectly cut down the vertical resolution because you don't understand interlacing. Both PS3 and 360 support 1080i.
In addition, the PS3 supports 1080p, which is 1920x1080, 60 times a second. MS has put out a lot of FUD about it, but PS3 does support it, although a game this complex possibly cannot take advantage of it.
Note to the "1080i should be called 540i" folks: DVDs is inherently 480i, the players just reconstruct a 480p picture from the data (possible with movies because their frame rate is less than half of the field rate supported by DVDs). So, if you want to crap on 1080i and call it 540i, go ahead and think of your DVDs as 480i (720x240) also, and see how long you continue to believe that. - Mejogid, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11From the article (posted below):
"Along with a stronger AI, Gearbox is hoping to tie together the drama of war with a feature the developers are calling Bromos, or Brotherhood Moments. Akin to the slowed down replays from Burnout that highlighted a particularly nasty takedown of a rival car, Bromos are going to be used to demonstrate moments that define a character in the game, a particular problem or an effective solution to a situation. For instance, Randy related a sequence where a soldier keeps talking about Stella, and it leads the player to believe that he's referring to his girlfriend at home. After a particularly tense battle sequence, it's revealed that Stella just so happens to be his Bazooka. Elements like these add a minor amount of humor to the stress and tension of the war, essential and realistic elements that make the story better." - Poddo, on 10/12/2007, -9/+19I love how Diggers are so quick to shoot things down. "the camera doesn't move like an FPS.." Who says the camera is SUPPOSED to move like a traditional FPS? They created animations like its a 3rd person action game, and then tied the First person camera to the Characters face. Its that simple. If you watch IGN Weekly episode 9, there's an interview with the producer or something. This stuff is real. The camera is not scripted, it will be like that for every movement you make in the game. I for one am pumped. Just another level of immersion.
- MedHead, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11I certainly hope the game doesn't require the user to hold a dying comrade every time one of them gets shot nearby. That would get old really fast.
- SweetsGreen, on 10/12/2007, -14/+23Come on... it does look better than COD2...but not much...not enough to make me shell out $400 or $500
- 15charmaxwtf, on 10/12/2007, -7/+16Some of these big sites have such ***** speeds. Like google and youtube.
- csprech, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8http://media.xbox360.ign.com/media/773/773087/vids_1.html Xbox 360 has the exact same video, its just a demo for both platforms!
- kloud213, on 10/12/2007, -7/+15i am so dissapointed with what ive seen currently in the next gen arena. all the game companys were saying better than shrek graphics and not one comes even close. dont get me wrong they are beautiful but still i want independently flowing clothing and hair to make it look real. i want to feel like im that person.
- cduquette, on 10/12/2007, -6/+14Well the war games seem to like to use prerendered video for their commercials. Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter, the current TV spot isn't using in-game graphics. The first E3 trailers of GR:AW before the 360 showed these camera angles too and larger than life graphics. The current final product doesn't look like these original trailers. Call of Duty 1 and 2 both used fast action prerendered video for their TV spot. The first Brothers in Arms did the same to show an intense street battle. Now why exactly wouldn't they be doing this for the game trailer?
- distrbnce, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11are you sure it wasn't the streaming video?
- ByteGuerilla, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10Off the handle, and on the 360. Mistitled submission. The video is in the PS3 section because it will be out on PS3, but the footage is pure 360. There is no game footage for PS3 games yet, unfortunately.
- AuLKenny, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Ummmm... who cares?
- Xipher, on 10/12/2007, -9/+16Looks pretty good, and at least this is finally some solid actual gameplay footage with the PS3.
With 7 months to go it's looking sweet. - Elxx, on 10/12/2007, -10/+16[insert generic "omfg prerendered, this sux balls LOLOLOL" comment here]
- NanoStuff, on 10/12/2007, -5/+11Wrong you are, HD is fundamentally 540 lines, or 960x540.
- NGliam, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8I'ev got some pics in OPS2 of this that don't look as good as that, and I'm pretty sure thats real footage.
- Saunka, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10I might have agreed with you 5 years ago before console FPS's had matured, but after Halo 2, GRAW, CoD2, and countless others I don't think this really matters to most console owners anymore. Another thing, from what I've seen the console version of FPS games tend to favor the controller in the game design. There are things they can do to the level design, overall speed and feel of the game that can mask whatever perceived shortcomings the controller has. Obviously a mouse and keyboard are more accurate, but if your shots don't need to be quite as accurate or if the auto-aiming system works well (i.e. not as a total crutch for weak gamers), then the console controller can and does provide a great gaming experience for FPS.
- Skettalee, on 10/12/2007, -5/+11Nice looking, im still more interested in new types of gaming from Wiiiiiiii!!
- webcrumb, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Compare HL2 E3 demo to actual game. Notice any differences? Promos always look better.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -17/+23agree totally that was a yawn in the graphics department... my PC could crank that not what i expect from a suped up ATI card + 3.2ghz cell processor.... + sony hype and screenshots...
- davidv, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9Never mind, I just looked at the source and sure enough... I feel kinda dumb now :P

http://ps3movies.ign.com/ps3/video/article/703/703695/bia_full_trailer_042806_qtlowwide.mov - Allanon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6How do you know the video is from the PS3 version? The article and video didn't mention a specific console and if you go to the XBox 360 and PC section of IGN they also have links to the article and video.
- TheFoo, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10I was expecting it to look a lot better than Oblivion and it really didn't. Not that it looks bad, it just doesn't seem like a major step up.
- distrbnce, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8the smoke was from the grenade... they aren't ninjas.
- distrbnce, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5OutRun is the example you gave...?
- WiBu, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9If it's real I'm impressed.
- swifty12, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Quote from PSM "One of the first things youll notice (or, more specifically, won't notice) upon picking up Hell's Highway is that the game will have absolutely no load times between cinematics and action. This is key to the pacing of the action, as Gearbox is making extensive use of what it calls "brotherhood moments" - brief cinematics that highlight moments in gameplay. This might include a fellow soldier taking three shots to the chest, or a Nazi ducking behind cover and calling for backup. It's a technique that was most elegantly incorporated by Capcom in its recent Resident Evil 4, and will most certainly require a bit of dynamic switching between action and narrative. Some of these will be generated on the fly- such as those mentioned above- while others are fully scripted, such as those that pertain to the main story arc."
- drizek, on 10/12/2007, -5/+10If they had actual PS3's last E3 they would be selling them by now.
- Phyltre, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5The gamepad and keyboard/mouse can be equal. You hear more about the keyboard/mouse combo being better because you are on THE INTERNET where computer users are more likely to be around than console users.
I play America's Army, Half-Life 2, and Far Cry with a keyboard/mouse, and Halo 1, F.E.A.R., & GTA San An (all PC versions) with a controller. Do I get wiped out on Halo PC and F.E.A.R. because I use my Xbox 360 for Windows controller? Absolutely not. It's all about what your reflexes are tuned towards. - mcbesq, on 10/12/2007, -5/+10Spoken like someone who hasn't played Call of Duty2 or Halo
- steve693, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8No. That's BiA3 running on the Xbox 360, IGN just placed it in the PS3 section because it's a multiplatform title. Games running directly on PS3 hardware haven't been shown to the public yet.
