- zaii7, on 07/30/2008, -13/+120the playstation seed is starting to bloom a little
- mythicflux, on 07/30/2008, -12/+10796% != 969%
EA PS3 sales went from 13 million in fiscal Q1 2008 to 139 million in fiscal Q1 2009. Per the article thats a near 1000% increase, not 96% which would be more like 25 million. - timusca, on 07/30/2008, -6/+66Wouldn't it be a 960% increase?
- Depravo, on 07/31/2008, -3/+54I like the Playstation brand but I hate EA. What the ***** do I do now?
- fpaudon, on 07/31/2008, -20/+70$139 million in sales? pssh, Dark Knight made that in a weekend
- inactive, on 07/31/2008, -2/+36"As for the other systems, the PC was the 2nd..."
So is PC gaming dead or not? - Abno, on 07/30/2008, -0/+29No, you're confusing fiscal years with calendar years.
Quarter 1 of Fiscal 09 is April/May/June of 2008. It's called Fiscal 09 because it ends in 09, the 4th quarter being Jan/Feb/March 2009. Right now we're in Q2 FY09. - soupdawg30, on 07/30/2008, -8/+35The Wii may sell but the games aren't
- WhereAmI, on 07/30/2008, -6/+31Maybe on the next Valve game they will now have the games real developers do it.
- SubjectiveC, on 07/31/2008, -3/+24Tony Stark built this in a cave! ...
huh?
Wait, wrong movie. - TCRAZNPride, on 07/31/2008, -33/+54xbox is evil for charging ppl to play online.
- MrFisty, on 07/31/2008, -0/+20Not buy EA games?
- WhereAmI, on 07/30/2008, -3/+21Perhaps you failed to read the article on how the Wii software will sell less than PS2 software and PS3 beats them both. EA numbers, not mine.
- turbodan1, on 07/31/2008, -12/+29If you go to the original article, here: http://investor.ea.com/phoenix.zhtml?c=88189&p=iro ... you can see that these PS3 numbers contain estimates of various microtransation sales, but the 360 numbers do not. The article explains that EA is confident in their ability to get accurate real-time microtransaction sales from Microsoft, but they can't from Sony, so they add in their expected microtransaction sales for all other systems for up to nine months in advance. You can see the more accurate non-GAAP numbers copied directly from the article:
Q1 Q2 Q3 Q4 Q1 YOY %
FY08 FY08 FY08 FY08 FY09 Change
-------- ------- ------- -------- -------- -------
PLATFORM NON-GAAP
NET REVENUE MIX
Non-GAAP Net
Revenue
Xbox 360 47 218 196 128 81 72%
PLAYSTATION 3 20 98 196 138 68 240%
So really the PS3 had an excellent performance, and a 240% increase in software sales, but the 360 still led by $13 million. - faizal5k, on 07/31/2008, -1/+17Looks like the PSP is also doing pretty well for EA. Props to Sony for finally listening to its fanbase. Looks like getting rid of Ken Kutaragi was a good decision even though he was the founder of Playstation, he got to far with the home entertainment thing. Glad SCE is going with a more gaming centric path.
- Cenobia, on 07/31/2008, -4/+19You have friends? Or do you mean "friends" on XBL?
You sound like a douchebag fanboy to me. - Seafea, on 07/31/2008, -2/+16You tell em, Human.
They can't fool you with their fancy-pants numbers. - krische, on 07/30/2008, -0/+14Yeah, they are talking in terms of Fiscal year, not calendar year.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fiscal_year
"Often the fiscal or tax year is specifically established not to match the calendar year (also called natural year) so that accounting year-end work does not coincide with periods of high activity, such as the Christmas shopping rush for retailers, or with holiday periods when employees may prefer to take vacation." - Temo1, on 07/31/2008, -2/+16True, but the Euro is 22 American cents greater in value now than it was at this point last year. It doesn't explain the whole difference, which indicates overall that the PS3 is gaining loads of ground after a very sluggish start.
- crossmr, on 07/31/2008, -2/+16It won't last long. The Sims cycle is about to start all over again on the PC.
- kewldewd, on 07/31/2008, -0/+14oooo easy there Human, save the ***** talk for xbox live
- Angmar, on 07/31/2008, -6/+19From the Kotaku Comments:
It's correct, but as people have pointed out, there are some accounting practices that you have to take into account. GAAP vs. non-GAAP is one, exchange rate is another. Since EA reports in dollars and the dollar is weak (right now, 1 euro will get you $1.5551 as I am typing), one game sold in europe is essentially equal to a game and a half sold in the US. If PS3 games sell better than 360 games for EA in europe, that will make a noticable difference. - Dracusis, on 07/31/2008, -5/+18Yeah, fat arse Gabe doesn't like the PS3 for some reason. Pity for you PS3 owners without a PC. Valve's games are always better on the PC anyway. The developers are PC gamers at heart and they make the kind of games they themselves love to play. The console version will always take a back seat.
PC+PS3+Wii combo is still the best way to the best of all the "exclusives". 90% of the XBOX 360's so called exclusives end up on the PC with free expanded content, extra features, high resolutions and better frame rates. - ausfahrt, on 07/31/2008, -0/+13No that is someone pointing it out so that others don't miss it because it is quite a bit more amazing.
- untzboy, on 07/30/2008, -2/+15That's the magic of advertising!
- Evi1d33d, on 07/31/2008, -2/+15Let's hope this translates into better quality games from EA in the future.
- FriedTurkey, on 07/31/2008, -4/+17Yeah it makes sense to add the number for the console when it just came out. Whatever makes you feel better fanboy.
- ZenMojo, on 07/31/2008, -1/+13You keep track of stuff like that?
- WhereAmI, on 07/30/2008, -2/+13Gabe Newell complains about alot of things.
Look at what he said about the Xbox 360:
http://news.teamxbox.com/xbox/9103/Gabe-Newell-Xbo ... - recruz, on 07/31/2008, -1/+12it's very simple- government "stimulus check" = free PS3!! and I'm certainly no exception!
- Ajajadude, on 07/31/2008, -4/+15It's not about overall, through the life of the console. It's the fact that the sales for the PS3 version have blown up in one quarter when they were sluggish at best the previous 4 quarters.
- krische, on 07/30/2008, -6/+17Wow, is anyone else completely shocked by this? I mean I really thought games like madden on the 360 were EA's bread and butter.
- C4Strife, on 07/31/2008, -3/+14And how many people do you know?
- altgeeky1, on 07/31/2008, -5/+15>I still don't know 1 person that owns a PS3.
That's because your friends don't have HD. They will, especially this Xmas... - ZenMojo, on 07/31/2008, -2/+12But did it do that on the PS3?
- snoox, on 07/31/2008, -6/+16I know several people that do, I bought mine within weeks of the release and it was worth every penny
- lartones, on 07/31/2008, -3/+12Oh WAAAAHHH, who cares about fanboys anymore. If the sales right now are a sign of what 2009 is going to be like then it's obvious that the PS3 is going to overtake the Xbox360.
It's as simple as this, if only a small percentage of PS2 owners are return customers for the PS3, then the PS3 will easily overtake the xbox.
Stop with the fanboy stuff already, it's getting old.
http://vgchartz.com/hwlaunch.php - faizal5k, on 07/31/2008, -3/+12lol troll GTFO.
- cli006, on 07/31/2008, -3/+12Gaming is one of the few parts of the economy that hasn't slowed down a bit. Since gas prices are getting so high, people are not traveling as much. As a result, the gaming and movie industries are still booming.
Oh yeah, we're not in a recession yet. It hasn't been two consecutive negative growth quarters yet.. - theaceoffire, on 07/31/2008, -2/+11Good point, without sources I sound a bit crazy.
*Crazier than usual, sorry.
MS's possible online-based OS, "Midori":

Rumors of Windows 7 being Modular, Subscription Based:

Slightly unrelated, an article of MS being accused of overcharging one of the subscription services they already have out:
http://news.zdnet.co.uk/software/0,1000000121,2132 ...
>.> Although I honestly might be confusing the "Modular OS" rumor with the "subscription Office" one, it does seem that Windows wants to make an OS that you rent instead of own. - Ajajadude, on 07/31/2008, -3/+11Thin how well it wouldn't have done if you had to pay $400 to go buy a ticket.
- PullingTeeth, on 07/31/2008, -3/+11Dugg purely for the news that EA Sports games are coming back to PC.
- bigbadgoat, on 07/31/2008, -2/+10It says very clearly in the Red Alert article that it has nothing to do with the system itself, and everything to do with the devs not willing to put forth the time and the money to familiarize themselves with a radically different hardware configuration unlike anything they have ever seen.
It has nothing to with the capabilities of the system, I'm sure it's perfectly capable of playing it.
Now... take a game like MGS4 and try and develop it on the 360...
"Houston, we have a problem". - dysonlu, on 07/31/2008, -2/+9I bought a 360 and it RROD'ed.
You want to buy it? - Shemales, on 07/31/2008, -1/+8I know tons of people with Wii's. They all own 1 or 2 games and mainly play Wii Sports if they even play the system at all. I know several people with 360's and they all have them modded and buy 0 games. Finally, I know a few people with PS3's and they all own atleast 5-6 games.
- KMartSheriff, on 07/31/2008, -2/+9we still don't care
- untzboy, on 07/30/2008, -4/+11My Wii is going to sell twice. Beat those stats!
- speakafreaka, on 07/31/2008, -4/+11Damn.. I dont get to play the next iteration of that horribly repetitive RTS?
- Kruchbaum, on 07/31/2008, -0/+6Hes talking about the description on diggs. He said the article was correct.
