- threepio, on 10/12/2007, -4/+35Sounds fantastic. I'm looking forward to running Folding@Home while I'm at work. The addition of the internet resolutions should help. Remote Play is actually getting me interested in owning a PSP again.
Hurrah for Background Downloading! (I think I said much the same thing for the Xbox 360 update that added it to the dashboard :) - ibeetle, on 10/12/2007, -6/+33MotorStorm

Yea it sucks not having any games to play.
Not like those Wii folks. With... um...... Zelda...Sports and....um.....wait a second... I have got one.... wait... ummm oh yea... Wario.
And I own a Wii. If in 6 months Zelda, Sports, and a hand full of novelty party games is it.... well one word... Ebay. - vraa, on 10/12/2007, -5/+25Digg's team number is 49808. ( http://fah-web.stanford.edu/cgi-bin/main.py?qtype=teampage&teamnum=49808 )
The PS3 F@H client will be released on the 22nd. The Euro launch is on the 23rd I believe, and all Euro PS3's will be required to get the 1.6 firmware. The 1.6 firmware includes F@H and I believe you'll be able to use F@H whenever your PS3 is idle, I know I'm going to run it 24/7 (except for gaming of course).
There is also a Windows SMP open beta that just launched from the good folks at Stanford if you're interested (ie: have a dual core or quad core CPU) You can get the WinSMP Beta here ( http://www.stanford.edu/~kasson/folding/Folding@Home%20Windows%20SMP%20Client.EXE ) (Note: You need .net 2.0 framework, don't forget to read the SMP readme.doc!)
There is also a client for both PPC Macs, and Intel Based Macs. The Intel based macs are in beta but man, do they crunch. It's SMP capable.
You can of course get the rest of the clients here ( http://folding.stanford.edu/download.html )
Fold away folks!
For the people wondering, what is Folding@Home, well it's a nifty trick in which you download a small program from Stanford University, install it, and allow it to use your spare/idle cpu cycles in order to simulate proteins folding (hence the name). Once the simulation is done, it submits the results back to Stanford and gets another workunit to process. Basically with about 600,000 thousand computers working so far it's like having a ultra-powerful supercomputer -- but at a far less cost. The results from the simulations could lead to cures for cancer, alzheimers, parkinsons, and a slew of other horrible diseases. What have you got to lose, give it a shot -- fold to help save humanity :) - DollaDollaBill, on 10/12/2007, -1/+20I'm glad I'm not the only pissed with my Wii. Zelda was great while in dungeons, ***** otherwise, unless its drunkin bowling, i never turn the damn thing on.
- Itazura, on 10/12/2007, -5/+22Well i paid well over 600 dollars for my PC, but I don't expect it to drive me around town. I buy things based on what they can do, not what they might do one day if I wait long enough. And the cry more comment was in anticipation of "i think 600 dollars was enough in the first place" which I expected.
- zetsurin, on 10/12/2007, -6/+20Nice, lots of digg downs today. I wonder how close you have to be to the screen to be able to aim the wiimote at the red thumb icons accurately?
- Itazura, on 10/12/2007, -9/+23Or you could pay $20 for a PAL dvd player and cry more.
- zetsurin, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15Yes, this is clearly another attempt to perpertuate another empty rumour, such as the PSP not having good games (which anyone with half a brain can see is false). Back to Metal Gear Solid Portable Ops...
Motorstorm is possibly one of the most fun games I have ever played as well. Even my wife loves it (a first). - chadwn, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14So the extent of the Background downloading is not confirmed. Whether you can perform it while playing a game or not has not been stated so lets not speculate. The article was written with a strong bias against the PS3 so they managed to make good news sound bad. Lets just wait and see what the firmware upgrade will truely bring first hand.
- andydumi, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14http://threespeech.com/blog/?p=346
Seems like background downloading can que up to 6 items to chug away while you do anything, including game. - djSyndrome, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Bar10dr, meet the USB port. He's a handy little guy, allowing you to attach keyboards, mice, and whatnot.
Did I mention that the PS3 has four of these? - zetsurin, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10That's right, old laundry is where half the worlds diseases originate from.
- zetsurin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Not to mention the fact that bluetooth keyboards and mice will be supported with this update.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+14... or perhaps i already have a ***** ton of stuff done for seti already and really wouldn't mind boosting it
- henrythehorse, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Sounds good to me. But I'm still waiting for the PSone games from the PlayStation Store to run on my PS3 and not only my PSP. Any one know anything about when this may be coming?
- zetsurin, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10Besides, I'd imagine ET should be out on blu-ray any day now.
- zetsurin, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9@WhereAmI
Why not? I don't have a 360 so those are valid titles to list in the PS3's favour as far as I am concerned.
You can only argue for them to be omitted if they are available on _all_ current selling consoles. - Exhaust, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7@directive0
The Wii browser had to have zoom on day one since it has that annoying 3 inch bar of nothing at the bottom blocking out a large chunk of web page. - WhereAmI, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Well, it comes with F@H, so it can help cure diseases. Can't do my laundry yet, your right its useless.
- zetsurin, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10Hold down square and press R2 (zoom in) and L2 (zoom out). Bingo, you already have smooth zooming. That came in with the last 1.54 firmware I believe.
I do wonder what they are adding in addition to this though. - MWeather, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7You can already play PSone games on your PS3. You just have to buy the disk. Downloading them would be nice, though.
Can you download Gamecube games for the Wii or Xbox games for the 360? - MWeather, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6This is off topic, but it's a pet peeve of mine:
A person who is influenced by a bias is biased. The expression is not “they’re bias,” but “they’re biased.” Also, many people say someone is “biased toward” something or someone when they mean biased against. To have a bias toward something is to be biased in its favor. - omatsei, on 10/12/2007, -5/+11Has Folding@Home had any major breakthroughs yet? Actually, have any of the "Use-your-PC's-idle-cycles" programs had any success thus far? I'm fairly sure SETI@Home hasn't found any little green men, but I'm not sure about the others...
- WhereAmI, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6That and when PSP remote play, as in really remote play from any access point. That will kick ass to access my PS3 from my college student center with my PSP. Can't wait.
- zetsurin, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8It's definitely 100% in there. Other people have found it as well (eg. guy commenting in here: http://www.ps3fanboy.com/2007/03/01/what-happened-with-firmware-1-54/). Surprised to see it's not mentioned as much. You can also reposition (pan) the browser window by holding square and using the left analog stick as well (not sure if it's a new feature).
I use the smooth zoom a lot for youtube. Also you will notice the excellent quality of the text when you zoom up, it's quite slick. - MrFlesh, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7I waited to get my HDTV until the PS3 was out. I had thought about buying a TV with a scaler in it, but after doing research I skipped it. As long as your TV is 1080p compatible you don't have any scaling issues.....everything plays at the resolution it was ment to. If it bothers you that much go buy a DVD player with a scaler and HDMI equiped. Run an HDMI cable to the DVD player and then component cables to the TV...that should get you to 1080i gamming. Scaling is only a problem for those with waaay older HD sets. ***** you look on new TV's they don't even support interlacing anymore.
- zetsurin, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8why would it? no firmware update has interfered with my gentoo install.
- Exhaust, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7I've played Xmen: Last Stand and The Departed with no lock up. Might be something wrong with your box as I've never heard of a Blu-ray lockup issue.
- Exhaust, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Since the "next generation"
Gawd! - MWeather, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Bluetooth keyboards and mice don't work? Odd. My bluetooth headset does.
- psionicman, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7I don't think F@H has had any "major" breakthroughs but you can see some of the results here: http://folding.stanford.edu/results.html
- zetsurin, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7I won't dispute that as you are entitled to your own opinion, but as someone who has enjoyed Resistance since Nov 17th, I'm friggin glad they launched 'too early'. It has NOT helped my game though and I regularly get owned.
- MrFlesh, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5the human genome project was completed. And there was that video of a former NASA head stating that SETI had already located aliens.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4PS2 started it with the upgradeable DVD driver
then PSX and XBOX had updateable dashboards
then PSP/360/PS3 (in that order) had an updateable operating system - zetsurin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I thought I read that true remote play will be in this update, which will also allow 20GB owners to be finally able to enjoy the feature.
I do agree with the OP though, I hope playing PSOne games will be added (I'd imagine they would look like ass on the big screen though). - byronm, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6cool. this will put the pressure on MS to keep up pushing db updates as well.
- omatsei, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7I wouldn't consider one more important or beneficial than the other. Thinking of the best possible scenarios, Folding@Home would lead scientists to cure all disease and save billions of lives. SETI@Home would lead to contact with an alien race and possibly unite mankind and make things like religious wars a thing of the past. In either case, billions of lives are saved and life on Earth is made much better. Of course, the odds of Folding@Home succeeding are far greater than SETI@Home... or so we think.
- triplehelix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3mark, those tv's are not very numerous, and is one of the risks you take being an early adopter.
- TonyCubed, on 10/12/2007, -7/+10Folding@Home is far more beneficial.
- Exhaust, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@mooninite
I didn't digg you down... Does your friend have all the firmware updates? Seriously your friend should check with customer service about the blu-ray issue. Never heard of anyone else's doing that.
I wouldn't base your decision to buy the PS3 on your friends defective unit.
If I based my decision on my friends defective units I would have never bought a 360! hahaha - knowitman, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7This article is very bias against Sony. They say that Sony promised a BIG firmware release that would fix everyone's problems and even perhaps do their laundry for them. However, Sony only announced that there would be a firmware update. The fans hyped it up because it coincided with the European launch.
- WhereAmI, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4@ ibeetle,
don't count cross platform games though. especially oblivion.
anyway, I want to get a PS3 this summer, and if you think I am against the PS3 just look at my digg record.... - triplehelix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2not sure if it was just ps2 games, or ps1 as well, but they are looking at having upscaling for older games this summer.
- WhereAmI, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I too would like to see SETI@HOME on my PS3. I know F@H is beneficial, but scanning frequencies for any sign of intelligence is also something that I find beneficial, and you can call me crazy but it is my electric bill and my spare PS3 CPU cycles.
- zetsurin, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7Spot the virgin.
- triplehelix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2there was mention of them working on other distributed programs next.
- triplehelix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2i will for one, when the wife is hogging up the main pc.
- huhCooL, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5I think the thing I'm looking forward most is the zoom (and resolution change) capabilities with the web browser. I own a 50" 1080i rear projection TV. My eyes aren't the greatest and I have a lot of difficulty reading the tiny text in the PS3 web browser while sitting across the room on my couch. The text is crystal clear (even in 1080i), but is WAY too small, with no way to enlarge it significantly. (There is a menu option to enlarge it but it doesn't seem to do anything).
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2So?
- turbopro, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Im looking forward to the folding@home. The background downloading sounds great. The first time I downloaded something I was thinking to myself that it was a pain in the @ss that I have to just sit there. My PSP is going to fly out of the ashes like a phoenix and be used for the first time in a milenia. The only thing that I am dissapointed with is the camera chat thing via in game. Wasnt that supposed to be in this update? Along with several other things?

What is Digg?
