- truspector, on 10/12/2007, -20/+77Sony tried to put too much into one box. I don't expect to see alot of these video type issues, but mark my word, an internal power supply is going to heat damage alot of units.
- wcasey, on 10/12/2007, -52/+23Sounds like somebody's been sippin on the haterade.
- kcpwnsgman, on 10/12/2007, -44/+21my computer has an internal power supply....
I don't see how having it be internal, rather then the Xbox 360 style with the huge brick would be a problem - brendanc, on 10/12/2007, -26/+8@wcasey / kcpwnsgman
Perhaps you don't remember the problems with previous Playstations? - JestaMcMerv, on 10/12/2007, -21/+13UPDATED: Bobby reminded me that his Launch Day PS2 was also DOA. (Drive wouldn't spin) He returned it, and had a new one sent, and THAT one was broken as well. (Drive would spin, but wasn't reading the disc.) The third one was the charm. Maybe this is just a case of Blackwolf Bad Luck.
- MoeB, on 10/12/2007, -25/+10boohoo. this happens with many electric devices. this is nothing new with consoles... blah blah blah.

- PhelixTheKhat, on 10/12/2007, -19/+14Quality Control is what's important when releasing a product. Only 1 of 300,000 units being a defect in the electronics field sure seems pretty damn good to me! Many think that their old Atari/Genesis/NES/etc would never come in defective, but that's definitely not true. I'm sure a good number of them were bad, but you received a good one.
Now, many wonder why the newer consoles are so buggy. Think about it for a minute. We're using hardware which is about a trillion times faster then your old Atari/NES, and we're pushing as much power to the new hardware as fast as possible. Thus, creating issues with both heat and compatibility of software -- a lot of which engineers try to prevent but not always can. A software developer can never guarantee something being bug free (short of mission critical), and Sony knows this. They decided to try and beat Nintendo to the punch on their console release, so of course they let a few software glitches get by (like emulation of ps1/ps2 games). However they know they can update it later on via their online updating service.
Anyway, the short of it is that all the first gen consoles these days will have bugs in them -- both software and hardware. Hence why I'll gladly wait a few months till they're ironed out. - slaystench, on 10/12/2007, -15/+8Wow. I don't want to hear this BS. I am on my third Xbox 360. So please stfu with this crap. Electronics fail? What?!!!>??
- iceperson, on 10/12/2007, -4/+43"Only 1 of 300,000 units being a defect in the electronics field sure seems pretty damn good to me!"
Does your ass hurt? Just asking 'cause that's a really big number you just pulled out of it. - PhelixTheKhat, on 10/12/2007, -12/+3No it doesn't. Thanks for asking though :)
- All4not, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Granted most item will not have a 100% quality control, but it's up to the company to be able to provide good customer service for a bad item. It's more can the company replace the item free of charge to the customer? Then, how fast can they do it?
So how do Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo score in this area? - canti32, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@Phelix
That should be only 1 in 300,000 that have been reported already. Who knows how many units are actually screwed up, especially with all of those unopened units on E-bay. - Elektriq, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Out of every PS3 console, two are broken.
- ReCkLeSsX, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1The official number was actually 400,000. The 200,000 you speak of was just a rumor, yet I doubt you'd care.
- rybolee, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0I won't mind the chances of a defective if I am getting one cheaper or free.
Found a site offering PS3 as a giveaway. http://www.modoshi.com/
- NICU, on 10/12/2007, -16/+45Oh my god why don't people learn? Remember that time when a console was released and there were no problems and no bugs in the hardware or the software? Yeah me neither... First generation hardware or software of any kind has bugs in it. There's absolutely no way something as complicated as a PS3, Wii, or Xbox 360 does not have problems on launch day. If you buy a first generation unit you have a much better chance at getting a broken one than if you wait a few months.
- wyfflemunky, on 10/12/2007, -9/+69The SNES was problem free on release. Wasn't it?
- iluvatar, on 10/12/2007, -11/+74My first gen Gamecube, 64, SNES, GBA, and DS phat would all like to have a word with you.
- TheToecutter, on 10/12/2007, -22/+4Companies ship first generation PCs all the time. The PS3 is basically a compact PC. But I agree with the very first comment above: Sony packed too much stuff in too little space without working out all the bugs. Christmas '06 was upon them.
- Anrkist, on 10/12/2007, -6/+44I recall Consoles being thrown across rooms as a child (NES) and still working.. controllers, power supplies.. all worked with a bit of duct tape and still do to this day. My Intellivision and Atari 2600 both still functional.. they don't make them like they used to!
- krum, on 10/12/2007, -5/+32My Sega Genesis and Atari 2600 didn't have a problem.
- ZenMojo, on 10/12/2007, -14/+6My Playstation 2 and Dreamcast didn't have a problem. And my mom threw a ***** plate at my Playstation 2 and snapped the A/V line off in it when she got pissed that I hadn't filled out college applications. That sucker worked perfectly for three more years.
The Xbox 360 has had worse problems since launch day. We'll see what happens. - xrisnothing, on 10/12/2007, -8/+25Game cartridges = no moving parts = fewer problems
I say bring back the carts! Enough with this optical junk. - GraceMolloy, on 10/12/2007, -4/+27My Sega Dreamcast was PERFECT.
- Ninjamonkey, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9The only two consoles I've ever had problems with were from Sony and Microsoft. My Xbox has a disc read issue and my PS1 I bought on lauch day had the overheating/video skip problem. Now my NES has issues but I can understand that since it is much older than the other two.
No problems at all with Gamecube, Dreamcast, Genesis, SNES, DS, Gameboy. - ZenMojo, on 10/12/2007, -5/+14You realize a cart would cost you about 200 dollars just for the flash drive?
Besides, the NES was horrible when it came to reliability. Everyone knows the problems from overheating, dust collection, and simple glitches. Nostalgia aside, it was kind of a piece of crap.
(Fun. But a piece of crap.) - ilitirit, on 10/12/2007, -3/+21"The SNES was problem free on release. Wasn't it?"
Yeah, but back then Digg wasn't around to disprove that. - Chaoswing, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5The Gamecube had problems?? What about the Genesis? Dreamcast? All problems free. Sony and Microsoft on the other hand seem to have the bad habitt of releasing consoles with flawed hardware..
- Solarux, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6My parents play Dr. Mario on the NES all the time.
...and my ColecoVision is still functional the last time I checked. Zaxxon this. - slaystench, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I have owned nes, snes, genesis, n64, dreamcast, ps1, ps2, and a 360. I have only had problems with my 360. I got lucky with my ps2, as I have had it since launch and it still works perfectly, but many friends have had to get new ones. It happens.
- isilex, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1That's probably why NASA never upgraded there space ship computers (or at least "seem" very behind technically - of course radiation is a big issue there) - but the fact of the matter current systems are more prone to issues and problems when pushed too hard in terms of design, size and putting all different types of technologies in 1 tiny package. It's going to be awhile before we reach a "stabilization" state to make all things work in "harmony".
Today it seems unfortunate that with all of the technology we still get so many buggy systems - but all I hear from my friends are the ones that got bad systems. And when I query the others they seem to be doing fine with good systems and they are more of them. The people with bad systems tend to voice more in such an occasion and it feels to me that is just illusion of that Sony is producing mostly broken systems. I have a hard time to believe that. - sideshowRAHEEM, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0these problems come from companies releasing product too early so they can get the hype from the Christmas rush. PS3 and Xbox360 should have both held back at least a few months so the systems go though proper QA testing but there fear is that a system released in March or April doesn't get as much coverage from news or get the little rich kids screaming at there parents MOMMY I WANT THAT FOR CHRISTMAS. Sony did the right thing with the PSP witch was released in Spring 05' and relay only had one issue dead pixels witch is just inherent to LCDs.
- awhite2600, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2There is no such thing as an electronic item with 100% quality control. I have had several products DOA or die very early in their life. My family's Intellivision died in the early 1980s after about a month of use. I bought a Game Boy the first week it was available. After a few months it started to develop blank vertical lines on the screen - a common problem. Nintendo replaced the Game Boy quickly. I had a VIC-20 croak after just a week. Lately - I have been lucky. My XBOX, PS1, Genesis and SNES have all been trouble free since day one. I also have a basement full of classic computers and games systems.... all running well.
- lokai, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I can see your point. However, when you hype a video game console as much as Sony has been hyping the PS3, and you ask the kind of money Sony is asking for the PS3, you do NOT have all of the problems that are creeping up lately for the PS3. You just don't put so much hype into something and have all of this stuff happen.
The people who are still cheering for Sony have a lot of faith. - mrRB, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Nintendo products tend to be everything short of bulletproof, even at launch.
- knid, on 10/12/2007, -26/+8BWAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
- Calypsoaf, on 10/12/2007, -8/+20This happens all the time. 360's were chewing up games and their power supplies were 2 degrees away from exploding, I remember people posting "How to's" online to hang your 360 from a hammok from your ceiling to keep it cool. I am sure there will be a few defective Wii's as well. Truly this is hardly newsworthy.
- RiemannLebesgue, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11There are quite a few posts on the PlayStation boards by people who are having problems. Most aren't as major as it going totally "dead", but still, it's gotta be disappointing for those who waited for days and spent hundreds of dollars on the console.
- batmanjr, on 10/12/2007, -8/+21Wow a story blasting the PS3, never thought I'd see that on the front page.
Consoles are getting to be like MS OS releases, you should wait after the initial release for more of the bugs to be found, then if you still decide to get it, wait for the first patch/service pack/fixed version.- halleyscomet, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4@batmanjr
It's not just Consoles.
I was nice and complacent about iTunes 7.0. Now it looks like we'll have to wait for 7.3 to get a decent iTunes version.
Never go with the first version, or the second. It's been my experience that you want to go with the third or later.
- halleyscomet, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4@batmanjr
- MikeOSX, on 10/12/2007, -13/+4I'm so waiting for Sega to drive around Sony's corporate headquarters again, taunting them of their flawed release date. But then again, they did that after the PS2 release, and we all know who had the last laugh there!
- FreakTrap, on 10/12/2007, -14/+2"we all know who had the last laugh there!"
I don't... link please? - xrisnothing, on 10/12/2007, -9/+3What's the name of Sega's new console? Oh yeah, DreamyMcDoesn'tExist.
You need a link to remind you about what happened to the Dreamcast? Ugh, I bought one and loved it. Then my precious games stopped coming :'(

- ynggrsshppr, on 10/12/2007, -13/+4Eh... who cares. One unlucky fellow gets a borked PS3 and it makes it to the FP. If 100 people get broken PS3s we get 100 FP stories. Why don't we have an article examining the extent of non-functioning PS3s instead.
- Philodox, on 10/12/2007, -8/+14Has anybody actually verified that there are only 200 000 PS3's in North America? If it hasn't been verified I wish people would stop publishing it as a fact.

"::laughter:: How about this story? Three(3) weeks ago my grifriend and I camped outside Toys 'R Us here in East Brunswick, NJ. The manager said that the store was only getting eight(8) 60GB PS3s and that was it. We waited 28 hours to get our tickets and had to come back today to pick up the units. Only three(3) units where sent to them because Sony had a shortage and they did not have anymore. I inqured as to whom the Playstations had be sold to. I was outside when the store opened and no one was outsite. There were other people with researved PS3s with their tickets. - tuxidomasx, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15as much as i'd like to take this opportunity to rag on Sony some more, a few bad units is not indicative of a flawed manufacturing system or a badly designed product.

Is dude2 out of luck? Can he take it to best buy and get some kind of support? Oh crap, but he just spent 1200 bucks to get it the first day and best buy will tell him to wait until the next shipment for an exchange right? If they'll even work with him without a receipt or with the receipt the dude1 might have been nice enough to send along with the unit.

It will be ok, please resume the fetal position. - HardwareLust, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1By more than one now.
- harreola, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2No kidding man. These fanboys just digg what they want to hear. They're the ones burying down the Pro-PS3 stories because they're whining bottom-feeders and can't accept the fact that the PS3, besides the fact that "no one's going to buy them" /sarcasm, they're selling like hot cakes and wish they had one. Face it, PS3 is going to succeed no matter what anyone says.

- StandardsDT, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1So then where are all of these pro PS3 articles on digg? Where are your sources? I haven't seen any on here even in the upcoming stories. Yes there are MS fan boys but there are also Sony fan boys. You happen to be one of them. Why don't you reread your comments you can clearly see in them that you are a Sony fan boy. So don't go bashing people who are MS fan's cause you are no better than they are. Like the one user said people have opinions and you can't do anything about them. Just like how you like one music artist and your friends don't they respect your choice/taste in music. Do the same for those of us who like the XBOX. Also just because people digg you down it doesn't mean your right it just means they don't want to read the crap you typed such as the caps locked comment.

These are samples of some Pro PS3 articles that people bury because they don't want anyone to see people having fun or giving good reviews to the PS3 or Sony in general. Why? Because that would contradict to what they've been blabbering about with their Anti-Sony campaigning. Also because Digg is an Anti-Sony community. That's why I said what I said.
And for the record, I am a Sony Fanboy and a Nintendo Fanboy. I'm not to fond of Microsoft mainly because it's Microsoft's fault that I cannot and will not be able to play Goldeneye, Banjo-Kazooie or any Rare made N64, SNES, etc. game on the Wii because Microsoft owns them now. I also don't want to pay $50 a year to play online when I can do that on the PS3 and maybe even on the Wii. - harreola, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0But whatever, the PS3 is out. Now only time will tell.
- StandardsDT, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If I'm not mistaken but the playstation network is still set up the exact same way it was with the ps2. Yes connecting online may be free but then when it comes to playing the game online there are going to be developers that will make you pay for it. However Nintendo has control of their servers. The developers don't host the online games Nintendo does. And the reason people pay the $50 a year is because people know they are getting their money's worth out of it because it has such a great online community. I'm sure if Sony was in Microsoft's position and had a great service and was charging $50 a year you would be paying for it. It's just like the whole thing with if Microsoft had a console out before Sony, people would be more for Microsoft then for Sony. The same goes with Mac OS X and Windows for example. If Mac OS X was the leading OS since the 90's they would have a ton of virus's and Windows would have next to nothing.
- MYarms, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2Not only did sony lose their ass on sales but they released a (potentially) defective product. That sounds like a great business plan to me.

I just smiled.- LowFuel, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1I guess they'll just have to sit and stare at the wall for 3 days, there's nothing else in this world to do when you dont have a ps3.

- lcmatt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Every time I load this website up all I ever see these days is another post slagging the PS3 off in one way or another, its becoming more and more boring.
- zetsurin, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Exactly, Digg is overrun by little kiddies running scared of the looming and imminent threat of the PS3.
Smell that fear? It's all over Digg.

- batmanjr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3As I type this 6 of the Gaming FP stories are PS3 bashing stories, 1 is about Halo 3, and the rest is all about the Wii and how if you had 2 Wii's in the same room the room would explode.
And if you touch three Wii's together it will create world peace, that's one magical machine I tell you. - maxx77, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Is this a story about a dead PS3, or about DOA being ported to the PS3? Boobies!
- SirBriggs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1My first PS1 broke. I had to open my PS2 to clean it 3 times since I bought it 2 years ago.
It's them moving parts. Games will hopefully be on flash memory the next console cycle. - thomasr05, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I am having fun watching Ebay, I saw at least 3 PS3 go for over 5 grand.
- delhalew, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0A dozen or more bricked consoles is problem, when Sony is lucky if they get 200,000 of these in our hands. No one can deny this launch has been rushed.
If I weren't already insulted by Sony, I would still wait till they had time to get their ***** together. Buy a 360 to get through the interim and I'll bet you forget about PS3.
This from someone who hates M$. I mean you have to be practical about(at least I do).
Not saying there have been a dozen...yet. Just wait. - physcodbzfan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1first release always have problems, but thats not gonna stop me from buying Wii
- markgl, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2nothing is 100%. There's never been a product that every one of them worked flawlessly. is that a word? But you know what i mean.
- xLiKx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3sony launch systems ALWAYS had problems.
- edrift101, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Was just over at CompUSA picking up some headphones and noticed a guy picking up his PS3. From what the sales rep told me you had to buy a 42" HDTV in order to preorder a PS3 from them... OUTRAGEOUS! I gave her a look and then she told me they had a couple 20GB versions in the back that no one wanted...
Didn't have the heart to ask her if she was surprised that folks didn't want the cheap PS3 for their brand new $1600 HDTV. - zetsurin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2IDIOTS LISTEN:
Just because a console is 'launched', doesn't mean it's mandatory to buy one ON THAT DAY.
Just shut the ***** up already. You morons have been getting more and more annoying as the PS3 arrives. It's the doppler affect applied to fear. - PartCat, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2All I can say is "HAHA for the the PS3 Fanboys"
- garyh84, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Now maybe I'm wrong here, but...
Won't most of the problems people are having be fixed by the software updates? I know you can't fix 'dead', but most of the other 'glitches' the PS3 are having, can't they just release a patch to clear it all up? - eghozt, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Sucker.
- AzraelKans, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Wii FTW!
- cyberghost232, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4OK, Lets see what I'm not putting my self through
1. A riot at Best Buy, or any retail store for that matter.
2. A PS3 DOA. (lol) sorry about your luck.
3. The Cold. Well cuz its cold.
4. My car broken into.
5. Mugged in line by some strung out ***** who wants it more than I do.
6. 480 resolution cuz I dont have 1080p. but 1080i instead
7. Getting stalked even though I couldnt get a PS3, but they dont know that.
8. Scratches because I looked at it
9. Buying games that cant break a 5 out of 10. At least not yet.
10. Last but not least. A headache, dizziness, vomitting, nervousness and not knowing if im gonna get one because the stupid manager said the store only had 35 units and there are more than 50 people out here.
Good thing I have patients enough to hold on for a few month.- littlegiant, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Glad my PS1 still works. 8 years old and the only thing wrong with it is the 'open door' button is a little sticky. Other than that, it still works perfectly. Ran through Tiberian Dawn the other day just for old times sake with no problem at all.... heh heh...
- typeronin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Camping out was worse...
http://www.ededition.com/ps3-launch-sitting-outside-in-the-cold-is-not-fun/ - apothekari, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I gotta say,We all know about the problems of the PSX and PSX 2.
Early adopters pay more and all that ,that implies,We all know this as gamers, we are used to it.
BUT....
This time its different for me, this is a 500 to 600 dollar device.
Your competition is HALF or less,
As the price increases so does the expectation that your are paying for quality.
If my PS3 was DOA somebody would pay.
PAY BEYOND.
