- datagod, on 10/12/2007, -18/+84Bunch of losers if you ask me. Why on earth would you wait 4 in line for ANYTHING?
They must not have:
1. Jobs
2. Kids
3. Brains. - Zaius, on 10/12/2007, -6/+52Wow, I cant believe thatBest Buy wont let people line up, sucks for all those people who were waiting, since the last 4 days have now been pretty much meaningless for them.
- JHawk24821, on 10/12/2007, -5/+45I knew it, people that like PS3 are campers. They just sit there, waiting for you to plant the bomb and blam!, headshot. Loosers.
- fusionFactor, on 10/12/2007, -4/+34Sucks for the person who quit his job to do this. LOL.
- Nodren, on 10/12/2007, -4/+29whats to say the average digger cant have a life? alot of people i know who use digg are married, have full time jobs and a few kids running around the house. digg isnt solely for the nerd living in his mothers basement.
- Leo21k, on 10/12/2007, -10/+30No Loitering.
- Sabin, on 10/12/2007, -4/+21Wow, 20 people in line for less than 10 consoles. Makes 0 sense IMO but what do i know.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15Watch out for that wilderness stuff, bears ***** in the woods
(so does the pope) - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12socratics = no sense of humor
- ErinIsADrunk, on 10/12/2007, -5/+16yeah they likely don't have any of those three but it still sucks to be them though. wasting 4 days waiting in line then getting the boot. Somehow though I don't feel the least bit sorry for them.
- ggko, on 10/12/2007, -4/+15"Imagine, for a second, that this comment was made about people camping out for the Wii."
hmm... Nope, still losers. - ricree, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10@estvir
It takes all of a couple seconds to post on digg. Now compare that to spending days waiting in line for a game console. In light of that, I don't think that your post makes much sense. - Kujila, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9I work at Best Buy, and we can camp out just fine :P
I know of one manager who is planning an early-morning Wii stakeout himself! :D
[EDIT] But not for 6 days! Jeez! I was thinking the night before! I already know my store is getting 63 Wii units so I doubt we will sell out within 5 minutes like we will with the PS3. - converge, on 10/12/2007, -9/+15do these people have lives?
- lagrange, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6They were throwing food wrappers all over and yelling insults at customers, they deserved to go.
I find people like you disgusting and on the lowest moral rungs of society.
It's in joke made in reference to the term "camper", which is used in first person shooter games. It's actually somewhat two-fold because the "campers" in this story are camping for a chance to buy a game system, and online gaming is where this moniker was born. Many chuckles where had by most, as you can clearly see by the +11 digg status of the post (at the time I wrote this). It's was meant as a joke and nothing more; especially not something that would justify my association with the, oh how did you put it, "lowest moral rungs of society".
Sure it's a bit of a stretch, but have you ever thought that maybe one of those "campers" might have been a father who had a kid that really, REALLY wanted a PS3, and wanted to get one so they could see the joy on their child's face? Because I find that to be a completely valid possibility.
I sure did, and any father that has the free time to sit outside a Best Buy for a week or more needs something much more than a PS3: a job. Think of the time dear ol' dad could spend working to make money during that same time period - money that could be better spent on something meaningful for his child as opposed to a damn console system.
I know you need to get back to waiting in line for your PS3, so I'll wrap this up. Finally, it appears that you tried to "legitimize" your outburst by speaking in an overly-educated manner, so allow me to quote Socrates, as per your digg user name:
I know nothing except the fact of my ignorance. - Socrates
Next time you want to call someone as 12-year old, try not to end up sounding like one. - bonked, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5daRoach - Ok, let's put your theory to the test vs. the employee you respond too.
If I buy a Wii or a PS3 today - what are the odds I'm going to be spending much, much more over the next few years buying games for said console? Pretty high.
So, if I take the short-sighted view that I don't have to be nice to you die-hard, willing to camp in the cold to be one of the first to get your hands on the console fans because, hell, it's gonna sell out anyway - and I run you off after 4 days in line already, the chances are extremely high that my brand is going to suffer from you taking your business elsewhere in the future. So, I get the advantage of no one being on my "front porch" but I most likely lose a hardcore gamer as a customer while being in a business that thrives on lots of hardcore gamers buying my product.
If on the other hand, I do "crazy" things like get the local media to cover the story, provide free electricity to the campers, use their hardcore interest as a PR tool, I not only will sell out (because it would have happened anyway) but I also generate more buzz for my retail outlet, and cultivate customer loyalty for hardcore fans of a product I sell.
Which one of these is a win-win? It isn't begging for business, it is simply cultivating a relationship and generating brand loyalty in a marketplace so I don't have to compete solely on price.
Can you see past the tip of your nose? Or, are you that short-sighted? - raindog469, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Back in college, they would have general admission concerts in the hockey arena and no one was allowed to line up until 7AM the day of the show.
Rather than prevent lines, what this caused was dozens of dweebs (myself included, a couple times) hanging out in the bushes at the edge of the parking lot avoiding the rentacops all night. Then, as soon as someone's watch hit 7:00, everyone would make a mad dash from all around the parking lot and fight over who was actually first in line. So the entire first couple rows at these concerts would be smelly guys in camo or all back, falling down from exhaustion.
I don't know if I'd suggest that strategy in Bergen County what with the actual cops getting involved, but I'm guessing that's what's gonna happen. - lebaige, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5It's pathetic, I hope other Best Buys do the exact same thing. It's just a game system, go home!
- Murdats, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5people who dislike people camping in games are on the lowest rung in society? thats a pretty full rung then
- burnttoast11, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5socratics, i think he is making a joke. Campers = Person who sit and wait in one place in a video game.
- scott88008, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Camping is not allowed in most cities. And even outside of cities camping is generally allowed only in designated campgrounds or wilderness areas.
- ibeetle, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Not if you live in Bergen Co. New Jersey.
Retail curfew... No 12:01 sales.
Public curfew... No loitering (waiting in line is loitering) after 11:00 PM.
Show up 7 am or get arrested. - EvolvedAnt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Not that I would ever wait multiple days on line for a game system, but if I was them, I would have simply moved the line over where they could not tell us to leave. Or simply form a line with our cars, or other techniques. You could even make a simple sign to let others know that your part of a PS3 line for new comers.
They put that much effort into staying there for 4 days, and then they just simply give up and go home? Noobness alert. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5***** campers, i would kick them out of my sever too...
- uptown, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Gotta love blue laws ... Bergen County shopping laws suck.
- macbookpromat, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
- pen25, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3well i look at it this way. weeks paid vacation. its paid for and like me i have 6 weeks built up. next year ill get another three and cant carry any more over so ill have to burn 3. this year i have taken 3 weeks off already. so camping out and buying a 600 buck device and flipping it for some mad cash. basicly almost a paycheck in proffits and i already got paid so cheapest paycheck ever.
- itsamix, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3no sorry @Socratics
- Methodius, on 10/12/2007, -0/+224 hours/day x 11 days = 264 hours
$900 profit / 264 hours = $3.41/hour (rounded up)
Speaking purely in terms of an hourly wage, that is extremely *****. This is, of course, assuming that they do in fact get that $900 dollars profit. They'd make much more money working at McDonalds or something. - Anth, on 10/12/2007, -5/+6The sign says the day before launch. So I'd assume thats the 16th. So 12AM on the 16th.
- guitarh3ro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You can digg me down, but anyone with common sense knows that if you are going to camp out in front of a store a week and a half before it comes out, you obviously have no life.
- macbookpromat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Don't waste your short life!
- smaisch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Do you know how PISSED those people who have been camping out for four days must be? I have a feeling this Best Buy just dug their own grave. I predict massive amounts of mayhem.
- uptown, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1NYC is where it's at if you wanna line up. There's no way they can tell you not to because you're on the public sidewalks of NY, and not loitering. It's public property.
- dxmzan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Four days of waiting around for nothing.
- Raian, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1waiting in line is waiting in line, loitering is loitering. They should all throw in a couple bucks and hire a lawyer for the night.
- jewdiknight, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1do you have a link?
- cpc197c, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm sorry, but if you have the time to waste a week waiting in line for a game system you should probably worry less about getting a gaming system and more about how meaningless and pitiful your existence is.
- JurneyAhed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1man, I hope they do this near my best-buy - I'm crazy enough to want a PS3, but not crazy enough to camp outside for one
- JHawk24821, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Or, the PS3 might suck. :)
- JoeB4ever, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0wow, you didn't read my post did you.
- spliffy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1could someone explain this to me?
don't these people already have vouchers they purchased that they already waited in line for?
aren't all the playstations spoken for?
if you paid $600 + $100 deposit it means you are getting a ps3 the day they come out right?
i would bet most of these people are ebay entrepreneurs. standing in line for 4 days to buy 3 of these for $1800 and sell them for $7000 dollars seems like time pretty well spent. if this is the case they probably already had auctions promising the ps3 the day it came out.
bringing me back to... if you already have a voucher you get the goods right? - tgmoo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Best Buy doesn't do pre-orders. No vouchers.
- DRAKE44130, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i am going to go to best buy at 5pm on the 16th. i will wait like all the rest of america. i was told 50 is the magic number. if there are 50 people in line before me than i will go home. why wait. wait for someone to die in line. fat chance that will happen. well wish me luck, i wish all of you "campers" luck too.
- JoeB4ever, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0thanks bonked
I think someone should take business 101 - Brookrtm07, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I remember camping out for concert tickets before the "line-number" system went into use. I don't see any need for businesses to cater to people that are just waiting for a week on the front sidewalk (especially if they are littering and getting into verbal assaults with customers).
If people don't get told, "Hey, take this line-number, show up at X time before this system goes on sale, and then form into a line," then they'll start camping. It's a complete waste to camp out for more than a few hours. - Brookrtm07, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Definitely one way to look at it...and seeing prices on EBay at 1500 to 2000 per console....not a bad business move. Good luck.
- gwolf, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1The camping out thing was getting outta hand. Perhaps they should consider a lottery, then everyone would feel like they had a shot?
