- Duositex, on 10/12/2007, -5/+61I would further narrow the list to:
-High price
-Limited titles
I have a PS3 and in my opinion those are the only two things wrong with it. - doddilus, on 10/12/2007, -5/+53"what about canada?"
so what continent is canada on? i keep forgeting... - 1Bit, on 10/12/2007, -8/+52IIRC, in Britain, collective nouns are treated as plural, while in America, they're singular. e.g. "Sony are" vs. "Sony is".
- shadus, on 10/12/2007, -13/+47Largely, for a lot of consumers, it's JUST about the price. I think the PS3 will do well in the long run, but I can't justify that price for a CONSOLE... the only other systems with a similar price were the Neo-Geo and 3DO... and we all know how well they sold.
- shrewduser, on 10/12/2007, -21/+52i'm still waiting for the massive sony layoffs, when are the heads going to roll?
how can you take a brand which sold more than 100 million last gen and tank it? it can only be incompetence on a massive scale... - maukdaddy, on 10/12/2007, -15/+45"Sony" is still a singular entity - a company.
IS Sony in trouble. - Lynn, on 10/12/2007, -28/+55Sony has not even sold 1.88 Million units.

For one, Sony has yet to release their system in Europe.
Combine that with the fact that many of their great games are coming out starting in March as well as many great blu-ray titles, I would say Sony is right where they want to be. - CannedMango, on 10/12/2007, -1/+22@1Bit
Thanks for the info... I wasn't aware of that. You saved me from some potentially embarrassing sarcasm.
On the plus side, nothing can defend "Is our children learning?" - gallagherFTW, on 10/12/2007, -9/+30This guy has atrocious grammar problems along with terrible spelling...c'mon "WEARHOUSING"? This guy is retarded.
- jacksons98, on 10/12/2007, -10/+30VGcharts has said 1.88m for at least the last several weeks so it hasn't been updated recently. Also I don't think they are counting Euro preorders or February sales yet.
-marked inaccurate until we have more information which should come in the next few weeks - douggmc, on 10/12/2007, -2/+22All your base are belong to us.
- coheedcollapse, on 10/12/2007, -6/+26I own three prostitutes and THEY'RE always the center and life of my parties. Closely followed by the Wii.
- Sofocore, on 10/12/2007, -32/+50not really, its way too early to tell but it would be awesome if you submitted this in about 5-6 months when the console is actually out in Europe, Australia and other countries still waiting because as of right now its really impossible to tell
- tizz66, on 10/12/2007, -2/+18maukdaddy: Not in the UK. A company is considered to be a group of people, not a single entity (at least in terms of grammar). Having said that, due to Americanism, either is fine these days, but 'are ' is technically correct in English.
- dankzappingly, on 10/12/2007, -18/+34Yeah according to vgcharts they sold 1.88 million. If you take into account the Euro launch as being around the reported 1 million that was reported then that accounts for 2.88 million which according to my calculations is greater than one half. If you consider .72 to be around one half, then i guess you're completely correct. That would leave 1.12 million unaccounted for. February is almost over and the sales are certainly not accounted for yet in the U.S. I don't know about Japan. Considering that they have just now started to be in stock regularly in most places(Amazon sold about 1000 this week before their supply was depleted again), and there are some games coming out that people actually want, I'd expect the February sales to be greater than January. Some are in transit, some are sold, and some are warehoused. I don't think, as your post suggests, that there are greater than 2 million PS3's sitting on store shelves right now.
- EatingPie, on 10/12/2007, -14/+29"With over 10 million 360 users, quite of few of them can and are experiencing HD disc movies for much less"
Um. If you consider $100 total investment "much less" then yeah... and this counts the people who didn't invest in the $100 wifi add-on, bringing the price up to... equal the PS3!
:p
-Pie - EatingPie, on 10/12/2007, -7/+21My big question: how does the author KNOW that these units are not earmarked for Europe? Pre-orders set records there, and launch is only a month away. He makes a statement but gives nothing to back it up.
-Pie - markgl, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14omg. when did every digger here become a financial analyst??? leave it be with all the game system bashing. who friggin cares???
- shadus, on 10/12/2007, -6/+18"real gamers" also pay $250 for a video card.
"real gamers" isn't only comprised of the people who have the top 1/10000th of systems.
Good example, real gamer, guy I worked with... played video games ~16 hours a day, went and placed well in several quake comps and unreal comps. Had a system he built for ~1200$.
By your standard my ex-boss who had a 8000$ computer and gamed about 2 hours a week would be a "real gamer".
"real gamer" is skill and amount of time you spend playing, not the price of your video card or console. - MoeB, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15vgcharts is hardly a reliable source of information. 4 million = NA + JP + AUS + EU + Other PAL territories?
"Things are not looking good for the videogame giants who have dominated the industry for the last ten years."
I love this line. Thank you vgchart "editors" - coheedcollapse, on 10/12/2007, -15/+26PS3 is still only a few hundred thousand behind the Wii in the US. I'd say that's pretty impressive given the doubled cost and the fact that it appeals mainly to straight gamers.
I mean it sounds like a big number, but according to what I learned in my Econ class (which could be total BS), a halved price usually more than doubles demand. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -7/+18Don't assume us Europeans will be jumping through hoops to get it. Yet again we have been left a distant 3rd in getting it, and it is more expensive and apparently less backward compatible compared to US and Japanese PS3s. For a company that have had really bad press over the last year (ignoring PS3 related stories), they really know how not to appeal...
- IkeMavent, on 10/12/2007, -7/+18"Are Sony in trouble"
I hope you're British, otherwise your grammar is atrocious - coheedcollapse, on 10/12/2007, -4/+15Yeah, people seem to forget the sheer mass of games that are coming out for the PS3 in the near future. My main complaint about the system (which I own, alongside with a Wii) is that there are not enough games for it. In March alone there are 13 releases, a nice chunk of those I consider myself interested in.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13Insecure people who *didn't* buy a PS3? That's all I can figure out.
- shadus, on 10/12/2007, -12/+21@Dot0, if you think cost doesn't matter to "real gamers" you're a fool. That may be the most stupid thing I've seen anyone say this week... course it's only Wednesday.
- philhatesyou, on 10/12/2007, -10/+18@shadus:
Real gamers pay upwards of $500 for a f*cking video card. Dot0 is absolutely right. - WickedDrag0oN, on 10/12/2007, -5/+13So walk me through this, the XBOX 360(which did a global launch) did roughly 2.5 million sales in its first 90 days, with zero competition mind you. Here comes along Sony PS3, roughly 1.5-1.8 million in its first 90 days and they have a steady supply rolling out before their next launch in Europe. Now whats the big deal? Looks like under other circumstances if the PS3 would have released first with out any competition it would have done just as well if not better than the 360 in the first 90 days. Don't get over zealous people, the war has just begun.
I would be OK to see them both last long enough to find out which one truly is better than the other. Give it 3 or 4 years - KaneElson, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8*Cough* read the other comments about British English *Cough*
- odiHnaD, on 10/12/2007, -10/+17@performance: So I take it that by annihilating you mean:
"The Blu-ray and HD DVD battle has entered a new era, as preliminary Nielsen VideoScan stats show the BDA's baby sold more -- a ratio of 100 Blu-ray to every 98.71 HD DVD discs, sorry still no hard numbers here -- since their inception last year"
Source: http://www.engadget.com/2007/02/23/blu-ray-surpasses-hd-dvd-in-disc-sales-for-the-first-time/
Wow...behold the end all of next gen DVD wars... *rolls eyes* - krische, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8agreed, I bought my ps3 and I'm pumped for alot of good games coming out in march and the next few months.
- alx242, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8vgcharts.org just updated the PS3 to 2.00 millions sold...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Is this some kind of new slang for "I'm a rebel" nowadays or something?
- KaneElson, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Apparently (According to the other comments) that doesn't make sense to Americans, but it does to Brits and Australians.
- shadus, on 10/12/2007, -9/+15Actually, I would say poor software is a valid concern at this point if you discount the PS2 stuff. However, the launch titles are pretty poor realistically speaking. ONE good game and same-ol same-ol otherwise. Both the 360 and Wii presently have better libraries of titles if you exclude backwards compatibility.
- staticneuron, on 10/12/2007, -5/+11This was done in about 3 months.... so yes it is pretty impressive.
- igyigyigy, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9When deciding which dialect of a language is 'more' correct, I tend towards how it's spoken in the country after which the language is named :)
- McGrude, on 10/12/2007, -6/+11At least I have the choice NOT to purchase either High Def DVD format with the 360. Plus I don't have to pay for the wireless network adapter that I don't need. And that DOES make it cheap in real terms.
Why does every PS3 fanboy justify it's cost by saying that I HAVE to purchase the HD DVD drive and the wireless adapter? Why pay for non-optional functionality that I'll never use.
I don't want HD-DVD/BluRay and MS isn't shoving it up my ass like Sony is shoving that BluRay drive up yours, without even the common courtesy of a reach-around. - HappyScrappy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Those NPDs you quote do not include Canada. The shipment numbers to North America do though. So of course you see a mismatch.
- HappyScrappy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5The NPD figures are a statistical sample and are adjusted so that even without Wal-Mart data, they cover units sold at Wal-Mart.
So the only thing missing is Canada and Mexico. - SpaceDreamer, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9why does that stupid website switch to another page while I'm reading ???
- samdu, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7IIRC, NPD doesn't include Wal-Mart, either.
- sadonomic, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Stop using vgcharts please.
- chicbicyclist, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6The only probelm is that there is no system mover in February, certainly none that is capable of making consumers swallow that $500 pill a bit easier anyway. No, it's not Virtua Fighter 5. I don't see any reason why January numbers will buck the trend. The only difference is that the numbers will be lower all around but the ratio of system sold will probably remain relatively the same.
- yukevster, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9Why this boring obsession with Sony's problems??
Who cares? - shad0w, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7The big deal is that Sony is playing catch-up to Microsoft. It doesn't matter the sales it has compared to the 360's launch window. Unless PS3 sales pick up, it won't be able to catch the 360 (and certainly not the Wii, for that matter.)
- McGrude, on 10/12/2007, -5/+10@Jackson98.
From my math $499 is $100 MORE than $399.
Really I have to buy a recharge kit? Hmmm... Seems to work fine without one.
Pay for XBox Live? Hmm... Seems to work fine without it. (although 13.6 cents a day is a good deal for all the features Live gives you)
Expensive Propietary Upgrades? Huh? Lost me there.
No HDMI port? No big deal it'd be the only on in the house anyway.
BluRay for movies? I don't want BluRay or HD-DVD. I'm not ready to replace my 100+ DVD library. Maybe once disc costs come down to the $6 to $20 I'm paying now for DVDs. And games only need that extra space because Japanese developers just love to do all their cutscenes pre-rendered, rather than in-engine.
I've got USB ports, I don't need a mouse but my keyboard works great, so do my iPod and my USB hard disk drives.
Blue Tooth? Why do I need that again? Oh yea so I can use a head set, but I already have a head set that work fine. - StateofMind09, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Official numbers only please. Anything else is not news.
A lot of those consoles may be waiting in the back of European stores waiting to fulfill pre-orders. Also, VG charts is behind by at least a million sales since it was last updated about 8 weeks ago. -
