- Pernz, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14I honestly think most consumers don't care about what format a game is on, but really the selection of games out there. Ask the casual gamer, who is the majority at the moment, what blu-ray is and how it will improve the performance and quality of the gaming system and see what they say.
- phpirate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Having games on blu-ray will not make better quality games. Most game companies make their games standard across several platforms, like PC, xbox, nintendo, etc. DVDs are not outdated yet, and 99.9% of games will do fine on one or two DVDs. What sony wants, is for everybody to already have a blu-ray player when the movies come out.
- noiles, on 10/12/2007, -5/+12its Wii, not revolution.
- edysteve, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Fanboys..... settle down.... Wait until the other console comes out before you wear out that greesy keyboard.
- phpirate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Let me put it to you this way. All the next generation consoles have better graphics, wifi, etc, but all of them have one "super feature" which makes them unique.
For Nintendo Wii, its the new controller.
For Xbox 360, its the online experience with xbox live.
For Playstation 3, its the blu-ray.
Really. What else are they doing on playstation 3 that truely stands out from the others? - 7of7, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Who are these people? I'm sick and tired of financial firms pretending to know what's going on in the game/computer industry. They are nearly always wrong and do nothing but fuel unnecessary speculation among weak minded tech posers. Whether it's "Wedbush Morgan" or "Gartner Group," these firms are just stirring the pot to mess with the markets.
- OriginalGamer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I'm guessing Sony already has contracts with major game developers and has a slew of top quality franchises coming to the PS3. I mean in terms of sales Sony won hands down in the last console war. They sold over 100 millions consoles, twice as many as Nintendo and Microsoft combined, Sony knows what they're doing. Now they just need to make sure they have a console that's technologically superior to the 360 and Wii at a similar price point. Blu Ray could be that extra piece of bleeding edge technology that makes the PS3 truly revolutionary. Of course if Blu Ray loses to HD-DVD then Sony has another Betamax on its hands...
- phpirate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Xbox has halo. Nintendo has a whole load of fun mario related games. Your point? Every console has exclusive games which are good. You have to look at this realistically. It's not too late to get sony to change something.
The multiplayer IS "free" because playstation doesn't have a global online service. Its up to the developer to manage whatever kind of online play there will be. As far as I know, no downloading demos, videos, patches, extra content, and so on unless there is a specific game which enables these functions. - tapo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Am I the only one that really *doesn't care* about these new formats? I already have a DVD player in essentially everything with an optical media drive (My Xbox, my 360, my Mac, my laptop...)
HDTV is nice, and it looks pretty good when you stick a DVD into one, and it goes 16:9 and very clear. But is this not enough? Is HD-DVD or Blu-Ray that much of a significant advancement over DVD (as least as much as DVD was over VHS), or is it simply the next Laserdisc? Taking off in nowhere but the videophile crowd?
I honestly can't justify spending $500 for a HD-DVD or $1,000 for a Blu-Ray player, as well as rebuying my whole movie collection just to get a few extra lines of resolution. Maybe, in a few years, when Blu-Ray playback is an extra $5, and I have an uber-expensive HDTV to play movies on, I'll probably pick it up. Until then, who gives a *****? - HPSauce, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Well "Wedbush", here's the twist; in order for Blu Ray to become popular, the best chance is getting people to get a PS3. And how do you do that? Through games! OMG
Tsk, analysts can make up so much ***** sometimes. - coheedcollapse, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The title isn't accurate.
"According to WMS, the battle at the top for supremacy between the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 won't be a matter of who has the best games, but rather who will be the winner in the next-generation DVD format wars."
This has nothing to do with Sony, it's a third party's take on what will win the console wars. - davidv, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3(had to start a new reply since I didn't edit in time :P)
As for the blu-ray thing, well yeah, Sony probably is more interested in the success of blu-ray then anything at this moment. That does not mean however that the gaming department has to take a step back on performance. I've often believed also that the company with the most third party support will be the leader in any console race, and that is something that no one can argue Sony doesn't have.
In the end Blu-Ray for me is a perfect add on to my media capabilities. I will buy a PS3, as will Millions, and the fact that it can play high definition movies is great bonus that I will take advantage of, as I suspect Millions again will do. - ScionX, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6I hate it when people try to say how PS outsold the Xbox. No *****, it better have as it was out for 2yrs PRIOR to the release of it. Not only that but you know how many of those purchases were duplicates due to the PS2's ***** hardware. Both me & my friends have purchased at least 3 due to DRE issues.
- vostek, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4these guys spit BS. I don't agree with the market share numbers.
- trod13, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I would prefer a system that has great games rather than a next gen player that might eventually be nothing but an antique or something. Its really starting to make sense to wait on the PS3 and really go for the Wii. Wow, that's the first time i typed Wii on the Internet.
- MacGyver2210, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2If you've purchased 3 they're obviously worthwhile pieces of hardware to you, so why bash the PS2?
- Nukem945, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4True, but I'd like to buy a game system that will play my next gen HD movies. If it turns out there's a clear winner (ie: HD-DVD) and I'm stuck w/ the Blu-Ray playing PS3, then that's one more piece of hardware I have to buy in the near future.
- shinynew, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6wii will call it the revolution.
- jpb0104, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2These are gaming consoles not DVD players. I bought a PS2 for the games and already owned a DVD player. I was on my way to hold out for the PS3 but I got bored with PS2's terrible graphics on my DLP. I had to give 360 a try. And now I love it. I am into Oblivion and FN3. I am just enjoying the games and I am not worried about the DVD capabilities.
- davidv, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Multiplayer is supposedly free on sony's platform, aside from mmo's where additional charges apply, so don't worry about paying to play. There is however a pay system for those that want extra, Sony has not yet stated what exactly is to be included in that, just wait till e3.
- HerbTheBod, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4The Blu-ray obsession is overrated. The future will be downloadable movies and not physical disks. The iPod has proven that convenience trumps quality.
- davidv, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You should really link to the original source
http://www.next-gen.biz/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=2866&Itemid=2 - matthewsr2000, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I think that there's going to be so much separation between the console releases that it's not really a competition between the two.
however, saying that sony wants to get a drop on the format wars makes sense. earlier releases usually get the market, and if all of the playstation "fanboys" [myself included] get one with their new console, it will help push that format into the mainstream. - buddapalm, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Totally agree with HerbTheBod. This analysis is based on the economics of the entertainment industry over the last 20 years. With larger and more portable storage, the future is movies that follow you on a device in your home or in your pocket. DVD formats will be trumped.
- rileyjt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Saying that MS will be bowing out of the market is a little extreme :) I think that Sony will indeed come out on top again this generation, but I think the overall marketshares between the companies will be a lot closer overall with each company being able to win in different markets. The majority of big title games will be cross platform and the feature sets of the consoles are pretty similar in the things that really matter.
Sony indeed will be adopting a XBLive equivalent and many people have speculated that is part of why the console was delayed. They are trying to build this system from the ground up in under a year when Microsoft has spent the last 5 years building theirs... we will have to see how they stack up but it is a safe bet to say that Sony has some catching up to do. Btw, if Sony goes completely free for their online gaming, you are talking about them subsidising their server costs and another money drain on their already strained financial resources... at some point they have to pick their battles and take some profits somewhere or they will end up bankrupt - they aren't running a charity foundation over there :) But along every step, you know that MS and Sony are going to keep their service pricing competitive with eachother. Microsoft actually has had several periods of free XBLive that were sponsored by advertisers and it would not suprise me to see a free version of the system that is completely ad supported by the end of the year. - stmico, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2The article this is quoting was already on the front page yesterday, this be a dupe yo! I don't get why submitters make us jump through all these hoops just to get to the story, if you'd payed attention and linked the original story like you should you'd have realized it was a dupe.
- davidv, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I am so sick and tired of that argument. Why does everyone say "Well I don't think I'd want to buy my entire DVD library over again just for a new format", Who says you have to buy all your movies again?? Every week there are new movies coming out, again NEW movies, and I'm sure that you would like to own a few of them, so why not purchase them on a high definition format? HDTV prices are coming down too, in the next few years in fact they will become the new standard TV!
FYI also its not just a "few extra lines of resolution", when you honestly compare them it's like night and day. - rileyjt, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2You're definitely not the only one. I could really care less about the HD stuff as I don't own a HDTV and I do not buy very many movies. I'm sure there are many people out there like me, but there are also many people out there who do care a lot more. To those people who do care, I honestly have a hard time imagining that they would want to use a video game console for their home theare - the quality is certainly going to be better in a stand alone player and the prices on those will come down fast enough or the format will never take off anyway.
The bottom line though, I don't feel that the games themselves will actually take advantage of the HD discs. I guess we will see in a few years, but right now I have a hard time buying it. Sony is basically asking you to pay more for a technology that most people will not use - granted they are subsidising a part of it, but the cost is still going to be higher. I think that even 2-3 years out you will see a significant price difference between PS3 and the 360 due to this additional technology that gamers won't even be taking advantage of. - davidv, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1with *free multiplayer, unlike microsofts pay to play.
- mycatfreddy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This article is drivel. NO DIGG.
- ScionX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I agree completely. As the first thing I do after I get a new DVD is rip it to my media center & put them back onto the shelf. I never actually use the physical media anymore. Simply choose from list of movies & hit play.
- ScionX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11. Sony never said it would be free. Right now they are speculating it may be free but there is still no definite answer.
2. XBL is already thinking about making it free & be ad-based. - grimeygutter, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Guess what....Sony ripping off a Live equivalent isn't standing out from Microsoft at all.
Blu-ray is way over hyped. I already watch HD movies through my 360 with Media Center Extender. For the price of a Blu-ray player your way better off buying a few hard drives, a copy of MCE 2005 and a tv tuner and once set up you never have to touch a disk again other than to rip it.
With hdtvpump and transcode360 I no longer need my modded xbox for media center either as anything I download will play through my 360.
Oh and I'm watching them on a game console that you could go get in stores now. Not 2 years from now when Sony actually gets around to making it fit in a box they showed everyone. - dragonopolis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Please, will everybody get off Sony's back on the " will only succeed if blu-ray wins the movie format trip" Nintendo Gamecube did not fail to penetrate 1st or 2nd position in the gaming industry because of it's exclusive mini-DVD player. It's demise as the number 1 game console was because of marketing and third party support. The little GameCube had the power to compete even with the old Xbox graphically as was proven by Resident Evil 4. Granted it was easier to produce similar quality games on the old Xbox than on the GameCube, but it still was possible. No, the type of Disk did not matter at all with one exception - the GameCube couldn't play movies. Despite this, Nintendo still was very profitable even sitting at third place. Sony won't have these issues with PS3. Why?
1) PS3 will be able to play regular DVD Movies just like the Xbox 360 and I bet will be able to upscale the DVD movies all the way to 1080p something that the Xbox 360 has yet to prove. If for some odd reason Blu-ray fails, Sony still has the same options as Xbox 360 to use add-on devices for HD-DVD or whatever the winning format will be. (Holographic Disks getting closer and closer to reality with manufacturing cost coming down alot quicker than anticipated with possibility of marketability in 5 years rather than the 10 year prediction)
2) Sony has stated time and time again that the medium all PS3 games will be burned on will be Blu-ray - period! So gaming on a PS3 will not halt to a stop because Hollywood decided to go with HD-DVD. Oh wait, Xbox 360 doesn't have an HD-DVD either. PS3 will still be a great game machine and I believe it to be the more powerful of the two technically. Let us see what E3 brings please - no Tech bashing here since there is little real info about the GPU and the only thing we have is some tech info on the Cell and Blu-ray lets not bash yet. I just stating my opinion and I am not in any way saying that the Xbox 360 sucks. In other words, even if one is slightly more superior than the other they both can be great products.
3) Will not fail because Sony has excellent Third Party support and a very large and loyal fanbase that rivals even Microsofts.
Square Enix just sold over 1 million Kindom of Hearts 2 for PS2 in the U.S.A. alone. I say that's a pretty loyal fanbase who would rather enjoy what they have and wait for Sony than to dump their PS2 for an Xbox 360. As a matter of fact, Kingdom of Hearts 2 is doing better than some Xbox 360 titles Ouch! I say that there is at least a million PS3 fans in the U.S alone that will by a PS3 regardless. Now, all Sony has to do is produce that many for us here in the States. Sony, by Christmas, could sell as many as Microsoft did in 6 months(approx. 3.2 million units) after their initial 360 release! According to the some of the companies that are contracted to manufacture PS3s July is the month to start cranking up the factories. That's 4 months head start with november and december not counted. Since with a 4 month start Sony will have almost 6 months of Manufacturing time but we consumers will only notice 2 months. (Nov and Dec). So in other words Sony could sell the same amount of consoles in 2 months of the PS3 release than Xbox 360 did in 6 months.
I don't think Sony is worried to much about PS3s success based soley on blu-ray. I not either
Can't wait for E3 - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Isn't this a dupe or something?
- nlatimer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Well most of those new movies are crap.
- firen, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1It's hard to imagine he would know anything about gaming. Has he ever played a game before?
- kersk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I can't help but think about the PSP after reading this. Sure, there are a few good games out there, but the overall lack of emphasis Sony has placed on getting new games developed is flat-out depressing. Walk into Bestbuy and its row after row of overpriced UMD movies that are just collecting dust. If Sony continues to try and focus on media capabilities over gaming for their next console, I think we just might see a repeat of the whole PSP vs DS war. Nintendo wins again? Only if they change the retarded name. :O
Wiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii - Xevallah, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Face it, the 360 is doing too well. They've sold a modest 3.2 million consoles 6 months after launch. Maybe 150,000 of that in Japan. Sony is going to release it's $500 machine and people are going to eat it up. When tasked with a second console, the majority of people will go for a Revolution. Sony will still maintain a majority of market this round, but Nintendo will close the gap significantly and Microsoft will bow out of the console market. Defeated. Don't label me a fanboy either, I don't even play video games.
"What else are they doing on playstation 3 that truely stands out from the others?"
From the promotional photos I've seen from conferences, it looks like the PS3 is going to adopt a LIVE equivilant. - neocitron, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1sad... then the name "Playstation" doesn't apply here... cause Sony is taking a back seat to gaming if the article is legit
- gumpy5, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1The plan makes sense if the early Blu-ray players are upwards of $500 (I think I've heard $1000 for a set-top) and Sony manages to get the PS3 in stores for less than that, people will buy that system over a regular set-top. Even if Sony sells at a loss, they'll make it up with either blu-ray sales from people who bought it as a home theater piece mainly, or game sales from regular console gamers.
- KidVicious, on 10/12/2007, -6/+5I'm still gonna call it the Revolution.
- rockforever, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1@ phpirate, PS3 HAS CELL SON!!! Downplayed like crazy. The revolutionary architeture. We'll see how it turns out but its nowhere near it full potential.
- MacGyver2210, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2Sheesh, may I say that I hope to hell that PS3 doesn't have something like LIVE...screw that. The reason I think PS2 online gaming was successful was the lack of a need for a centralized payed-for service. A LIVE equivalent would screw that up and at least for myself, make me not want to even go online with the piece. If the people need money to run their servers, charge a subscription like FFXI or EQ. Leave the games like SOCOM:1/2/3, Ghost Recon, CoD/CoD2, etc. alone and let them be free.
Also, I could care less what format the discs are, as long as they release it soon and stop hyping it. - fiftycents, on 10/12/2007, -4/+0All of you need to stop repeating or re-wording what you hear about, or read on forums... you don't know what you're talking about. Any of you.
Unrelated to that, the post is inaccurate to the article.
"According to WMS, the battle at the top for supremacy between the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 won't be a matter of who has the best games, but rather who will be the winner in the next-generation DVD format wars."
People should really read the whole article before they post. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -11/+5HD-DVD will most likely be the future so no point in spending a ton on a system that can't support it. I think this is going to be the down fall of the Xbox systems once the blueray or hd systems come out
Jeff - http://jeffeh.com - mrmontrose, on 10/12/2007, -13/+3I don't care. I don't buy crappy hollwood movies(I bit torrent them), I want something I can get my vidcasts on. If I go by that, it seems like 360 is better
- rockforever, on 10/12/2007, -16/+3This is such a bad argument. Because Sony is a huge company. With many different interests. Sony Entertainment ONLY makes games. Thats all they do. They prolly don't care to much about bluray other than its technical limitations. Sony BMG doesn't care at all about any of it. So saying Sony doesn't care about gaming is very misleading. They have money in gaming, they care about gaming. They have money in bluray, they care about bluray.
