- Thors1982, on 10/12/2007, -30/+101I have been reading a lot of "wait till sony patches this" comments lately.
It amazes me after all the idiotic things sony has done lately. Not to mention all of their outright lies.
People still have faith in them. Its kinda cute, but mostly pathetic and sad. - SimonX314, on 10/12/2007, -9/+59@JayD, so you are basically saying we shouldn't complain about the problem until we wait for them to fix it? They have refused to acknowledge this issue and many others, such as that 720p games downscale to 480p on a 1080i set, and Blu-ray movies downscale to 480p on a 720p set. The only way Sony can be cajoled into fixing these problems is if enough bad press hits the public. A colleuge of mine confronted a Sony rep at CES about this issues and he told him to "buy a real tv". Even though my colluege had just purchased a Sony Bravia...

DUDE. WHAT THE HELL IS THE MATTER WITH YOU?
I am NOT an Xbox fanboy nor are the many people that are helping me. I didn't camp out for 3 1/2 days in rainy, windy, Western Washington weather for a PS3 to slam it on the web. I'm 28 years old and realize the value of making my own money. If I spend $900 (PS3, extra controller, 2 games, memory card adapter) I want that product to work properly. I was quite underwhelmed by the launch line-up and went back to continue my FFXII game on the PS3. That is when this issue came up and I posted it. Don't be a baby and spout off about conspiracies or that I'be somehow CREATED JAGGIES WITH MY TV (LOL).
Grow up and realize that the PS3 is currently a flawed system that will get better over time but has certain things that need to be fixed now. You shouldn't be slamming us. You should be THANKING us for taking the time to stick up for all the PS3 buyers, even a fanboy maggot like you. - SimonX314, on 10/12/2007, -5/+31None of the links you provide show Sony addressing the backwards compatibility issue in the March firmware update.
- EruLabs, on 10/12/2007, -13/+37I have NO idea what any of this is about. I bought a PS3 on New Years... When I got it the firmware was 1.0 (updated since then) so It hasn't been modified from the launch PS3: My PS2 games look better than ever.
My tests:
Forced 720p resolution: GTA: San Andreas, looked exactly like it does normally (jaggies show up more, because we are playing on a higher resolution, so EVERYTHING shows up more clearly), however, the smoke and particle/fire physics, along with the lighting (looking at the light reflect off the cars) and contrast were FAR beyond anything the PS2 would show.
Normal 480i (NTSC): Looks normal, jaggies identical to my ps2, same improvement with general lighting/physics/fire (blowing up a car looks MUCH better)
Final Fantasy Tactics for PS1: Looks and runs perfect. No glitches, nothing - Identical in every way to playing on the PS1, only better controller and much faster loading times.
FF7 Dirge of Cerberus for PS2: identical to the PS2, no improvement, no loss
Kingdom of Heaven (blu-ray) at 24MBp/s at 1080i on an HP 40' plasma: awesome... holy god you must see blu-ray. Missed most of the movie because me and my friends were exclaiming "holy crap! you can see every stitch in the shirt that guy is wearing... OMG look at the FIRE!!!!!"
Ive also watched plenty DVDs on the PS3, work perfect (weird volume control in the menu... that's new)
oh, and not to mention Genji, Resistance, full auto2, coming in at 1080i looking spectacular.
Every person Ive ever talked to who actually OWNS a PlayStation 3, has been NOTHING but happy. This is the same with all the other Sony products. Bad press everywhere I look, yet every product I've ever purchased from them has lasted a long time, worked well, and in the end, been worth it. This being my end-all rant on why the PS3 isn't a failure whatsoever, let me end with some advice:
1. get the 60 gig, you ll want it for your Linux install, your 50 demos that are like 600MB each and all your saved games.
2. Immediately buy another Six-Axis, the knockoffs are horrible (Sony really really... REALLY... should have put 2 controllers in the 'premium' package
3. after buying your second six-axis with the friend you took to go get it, turn around and buy the HDMI to DVI cables... The component and composite video gave us trouble on the plasma - felt like it just wasn't going to work. I ordered these and now I can play in 1080p on my computer monitor or 1080i on my plasma. - kphlight, on 10/12/2007, -13/+29I'm a gamer through and through. To date, there are ~80 major home consoles and I own 55 of them (reference: http://www.thegameconsole.com/). I was one of the 1% that bought a launch PS3 because I wanted to game with it. After taking it home and setting it up; the last thing I'd ever do is buy a game for it. I want Sony to lose as much money as possible with my purchase. I'll wait for used games to show up at Gamestop. I'll wait for accessories to show up on eBay. Screw Sony. You'll never get another cent from me.
- jacksons98, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14Just a friendly fyi, the blu-ray one is false.

http://boardsus.playstation.com/playstation/board/message?board.id=ps3&thread.id=808212&view=by_date_ascending&page=1
All we want is for sony to publicly admit their error, and post something on their OWN website stating that that a fix is on the way, possibly providing a timeline. I'm stuck in the same situation as The Sarge - I sent mine in to be replaced, and now the retailer I bought it from will not give me a refund due to the difference in serial numbers.
Come on, Sony. Stop being so pompous that you can't even admit that you messed up. - catalysis, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12Um, because he doesn't have a ps2?
- Flumshid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11"I've played PS2 games on my PS3 and they look the same. Why don't you play PS3 GAMES?"
If you look at my thread on th Sony boards, we clearly state that not ALL PS2 games have this pixel flipping glitch. In fact we have a user tested list that continues to grow. I encourage you to educate yourself and look at the thread. - Flumshid, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12I'd be content to wait a bit if Sony pulically acknowledged the issue. The fact that the worst glitched game (Final Fantasy XII) is still not listed as having problems on their compatibility site is appalling.
- nonforma, on 10/12/2007, -5/+15Yes we do. The initial post was when the problem was first found. Now the problem is that the issue is being ignored. Why should we have to wait 4 months? And if they had a fix planned for that update, why wouldn't they at least recgonize this issue, and say that it will be fixed then?
And why would I wait to purchase a PS2 emulator when the PS3 is clearly supposed to support backwards compatibility? That makes no sense. - digitalgopher, on 10/12/2007, -6/+16"...Sony completely ignoring issue"
Why is this surprising? I thought that it was clear with the launch of the PS3, that Sony no longer cares about what the consumer wants. - aegis9975, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12>>None of the links you provide show Sony addressing the backwards compatibility issue in the March firmware update.
from article:
"Since the PS3 launched in the US and Japan last month, a number of issues have emerged, including incompatibilities with some older PS2 and PSOne games, and problems driving HD TVs that support the 1080i resolution rather than the 720p and 1080p resolutions the PS3 favours. Sony has hinted that fixes for these glitches are in the works" - LiquidPenguin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Umm... YDL, Gentoo and FC5 all supposedly can be installed and run on the PS3.
- jacksons98, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Well I wanted backwards compatability to Xbox games did they do that? Since that is what this thread is about, not live.
- alx242, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9@Thors1982:
You have to realize that people complained a lot about stuff on the PSP as well and stuff did happen, stuff did get fixed. Even an emulator for the PS1 came out. SCEA is not the same as Sony BMG or other parts of the company. - Zoxy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9It's better then having the system break down like the 360. No system has come out the gate completely prefect, 360 has its hardware defects, PS3 has its software problem, and the Wii has the flying remotes.
- nonforma, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9@ReCkLeSsX
If you would look at the forum post this Digg links to, you would see that people have already tried that. Using composite cables as opposed to HDMI only masks the problem slightly because the signal quality is much lower. The problem is there, you're just not able to see it as well anymore. That is not a fix. - nytejade, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7The point of this isn't to tell people the PS3 sucks, it's to get awareness out that there is a problem, and hopefully get a fix. Because I think the PS3 is great, and has a lot of potential for the future. They just need to do a bit of work before it gets there.
- nonforma, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8@aegis9975
The incompatibilities they are talking about were in regards to games that didn't actually run, screwed up graphics or not. There were problems in the emulation. They fixed those problems in a recent firmware update. You can read about that issue here: http://www.gamespot.com/news/6161638.html?sid=6161638
As for the graphical glitches affecting all PS2 games that do not support progressive scan, Sony has not made any official statement about them. - jacksons98, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I agree, but I partly blame Square for not including progressive scan on a game in this day and age.
- EruLabs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7It runs ps2 games without emulation, if they support it.
Read my post above, sorry - youre just wrong here. - Flumshid, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7BIG NEGATIVE CHIEF.
That IS a 1080p TV. If you read my thread you will read that the PS2 looks fine while using the SAME cable from the PS3 causes that glitch. Don't be ignorant. It is NOT a cable/TV issue. - thatsmyaibo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Stop the damn Sony bashing already. When the 360 has a massive number of games that aren't backwards compatible, nobody cares anymore. But when Sony allows for a search on any previous title, and lets you know what the issues are, people still aren't happy. I sold my Gamecube when i got a Wii and I can't play my old games because i don't have a controller. Every system has flawed in this area so far. It's ok if you don't like Sony or the PS3, don't buy one. IMHO Sony has the best backwards compatibility so far. I bought the original XBOX for Shenmue 2 and had to wait a year to play it on 360. But I am still happy with it. This Sony bashing is old and the posts about how it sucks are redundantly worded different.
- MechaFenris, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Indeed. I agree. The PS3 is a stunning system. The 360 is a stunning system. That's why I own both. Are either of them perfect? Certainly not.
This glitch that keeps popping up w/r/t backwards compatibility and picture quality is simply a symptom of the ever-increasing complexity of the systems. At least sony went for more compatibility than the 360.... I do have more clutter, keeping an Xbox plugged in to play the games not compatible with the 360's emulation. It's a minor inconvenience.
Both systems can live together.. :) - aegis9975, on 10/12/2007, -15/+21>>Where is the official statement from Sony?

http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3148775 - Oktober, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7It's a tough problem to solve. Sony was very lax in enforcing technical standards on the PS2, and some publishers (cough, Konami, Capcom, Square) used some very unorthodox rendering techniques to get the most out of that console. Now, when the PS3 pipes all of this through its own video hardware, these weird compression artifacts appear.
I hate to say it, but I wouldn't expect a fix for this until Sony rolls out its software BC solution. - endymion86, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8Some people don't think they have the problem. This is a thread for those who do. We have a system that promised 100% BC, and we're not getting it. Why don't you go post comments in a form that applies to YOU? Don't try to start a flame war. Just refrain from commenting if you don't have anything to contribute.
- nonforma, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Exactly. Sadly anything regarding consoles usually devolves into a fanboy war by fanboys on both sides. I own all three consoles at this point. I think they are all excellent machines. I'm just looking for Sony to acknowledge this problem and provide a solution.
- DollaDollaBill, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8hey hey hey keep your truth and facts out of this.
- PSPon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Sony need to acknowledge
- nonforma, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5http://youtube.com/watch?v=IoCD9TwLrVs
That video pretty much illustrates the problem. It looks even worse when you have high quality pictures as opposed to YouTube video. This has been Dugg before, but the main issue now is that Sony is ignoring the problem. - chazuk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5It amazes me that even with as much evidence on that thread some people believe others are making this all up.
If it is a big fake, it's one of the best I've seen...... - Deinonych, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Yes, because the PS3's library of games is clearly as large as the PS2's... /rolleyes
- MechaFenris, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4You don't need THAT much validation, do you? :)
btw, playing FFXII for me looked acceptable. Sure it's not perfect, but if you think that everyone is just going to agree with you because you have compiled a laundry list of experimentation, don't hold your breath. :-) I'm not saying there isn't a problem (clearly it is... not unlike the 360's red ring of death and DRE's that still plague the system since launch...) But for my purposes, I find it an acceptable enough trade-off. If it were too horrible, I'd just plug my PS2 back in and go from there.
I am not saying you have no right to be angry... clearly it bothers you more than others in a similar situation. But if someone says what they see playing FFXII is acceptable, there's nothing to convince them otherwise (not even a brodcast engineer... or the Pope himself)...
Still, I think this most likely will see an update in the Spring... I'm sure Sony's not going to let this slide under the rug.... If they do, it won't be the first time they tried, but it will come as a surprise to me. :) - mancat, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6I can't figure out why Sony decided not to provide the PS3 with hardware video scaling.
- LiquidPenguin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3OK, all the Sony sites are blocked from work.. Go figure. And I don't have my laptop with me to piggyback on someone elses wireless.
So can someone give a highlight on what's the problem? I don't own a PS3 because I've been leery of their choice of Bluray, but whatever, I'm a gamer at heart. It's about the games, not the console. - Flumshid, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4"They are taking a $300 hit as it is per console why make it $400. Anyway it scales to 1080p just fine. Most new sets coming out are 1080p. This is a problem for people that bought HD-TV hype before HD really came out"
Once again you're blaming TV's. I already replied that my TV is less than a year old and a JVC 1080p LCoS model. Knock it off with your uninformed generalizations. - Flumshid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"I already did. You run your PS2 at the SD setting and say "Look how good it looks on my PS2!" Then you put your PS2 at a HD setting and say "Look how bad the PS3 looks." Those screens you show look exactly like what happens when you run a SD signal on an HD setting without a scaler. Even if your not lying then explain to me why PS2 games look just fine on a standard definition TV? I've said it 4 times now. If it was the PS3 it would look like ***** on an SD TV . None of my games do. Why are you being ignorant by name calling? What are you six?"
I'm setting the PS3 to output 480i just like the PS2 does for a game like Final Fantasy XII over a component cable. Does my TV have a scaler? Yes it does. Does in screw up the 480i signal feeding it via component video from my PS2? Nope. Looks great. Does my picture look awful sending the same game, with a 480i signal via component coming from my PS3? You bet it does. I am forcing my PS3 to emulate what my PS2 is doing the problem persists.
I've tried this experiment on SIX different TV's. Five HD, one SD. ALL have this glitch from the PS3. I'm betting that you used the supplied composite cable or S-Video for your SD TV experiment. MANY people have claimed that they can't see the issue when they do that and we tell them look really closely. They come back and state the problem is still there but simply masked by the crap TV and crap cable.
The damn thread is almost 2000 replied long. I've dealt with plenty of guys arguing what you are right now. Nobody wants to be wrong but you're wrong. I mean we've got a broadcast engineer posting prominantly in the thread that knows all about this kind of stuff that will tell you you're wrong. - jacksons98, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It's only a problem with games that are at 720p and TV's that display 480i/480p and 1080i. Games that are 1080p go down to 1080i and look great. The problem is games that are 720p go down to 480p instead of 1080i on those TV's. If your TV is a standard def TV or 1080p/1080i then it doesn't effect you.
- soulscreme, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Been playing the hell out of God of War and FFXII lately on my PS3. Granted, I don't own an HDTV, but I see no problems on my SD set.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3OMG BACKWARDS COMPATIBILITY ISN'T PERFECT!
When was the last time anyone saw this happen? OH yeah..I remember now..the x360 launch. - MrFlesh, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4They are taking a $300 hit as it is per console why make it $400. Anyway it scales to 1080p just fine. Most new sets coming out are 1080p. This is a problem for people that bought HD-TV hype before HD really came out
- JayD16, on 10/12/2007, -8/+11Purchase an emulator? No, you misunderstand. The PS3 has hardware backwards support now but will change to emulation with a patch.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7Did anyone bother to RTFA? I don't think so because of the 20,000+ PS2 games only the following 41 exhibit the issue. Do you realize how small a percentage this is? This is 0.205% of the 20,000+ PS2 games.
In other news, 80% of Xbox 1 games still do not work on the 360. Microsoft has also stopped all further work on getting the Xbox 1 games to work on the 360. They shafted you with their bad Xbox 1 compatibility and now they're going to announce version 2 of the 360. How many bitch slaps can the 360 community take.

1. Sony Root kit destroyed my city
2. Sony is doomed Microsoft the company I choose to ignore the past illegal acts commited because they happened when I was 5 years old is the bomb.
3. I hate sony because well for 18 year olds hating something is needed to justify my self worth because I have really no clue what is going on in the world anwyways. - Flumshid, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4"It might not be fake but other than the resolution and the fact he is using component cables there's no details about anything.
