- DrScott, on 10/12/2007, -0/+40Well, I would certainly hope that the images were computer generated. I would hate to have to meet one of those War of the Worlds-esque creatures on the street...
- Kallius, on 10/12/2007, -0/+36My PC took one look at those pictures, broke down and cried.
I'm sensing a major upgrade coming... - autocrawler, on 10/12/2007, -0/+23The PC version will have singleplayer mode too. And no, the Darkwalkers are not console exclusive either.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+26I love how some people are ripping on UT by saying Gears of War is/looks better. You DO know the graphics engine was built using Unreal Engine 3.0... right?
- CrimsonBlur, on 10/12/2007, -6/+29Those are some very impressive screenshots! Not only do the graphics look spectacular, but the gameplay looks very fun as well. The only thing is, these shots are from sites dedicated to the XBOX, but they make no mention of whether or not these are actually captures from the 360 version of the game. My assumption is these are from the PC version. If they are from the 360 version then I am even more impressed!
- theragu40, on 10/12/2007, -2/+25Simply put, I think that it's unlikely that these are 360 screenshots. We've been seeing screenshots of this quality since before anyone knew it was even coming to the 360. I think the 360 can handle graphics of that caliber, but probably not at the speed and numbers of players that UT traditionally is associated with. Then again, UT has always been one of the best games as far as not needing too much power to look amazing, so I wouldn't put it past them.
And to respond to zaid...why exactly would the single-player campaign be console exclusive? Because "consolez are teh aw3som3"? If you'll recall, UT originated as a PC franchise, and each new iteration has had a single player campaign. It's never been the focus, but it's always been there. I love console games too, but that doesn't mean that PC versions of games get less content. Usually it's the other way around. - dmason, on 10/12/2007, -2/+24I can't wait to run that at 10fps. (On my PC - this isn't a 360 flame)
Any word on a release date? I've been waiting and UT2k4 just about out of steam. - h4rdcor3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+20i'd buy the game if you got to kill Tom Cruise with one the the walkers
- theragu40, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17You also might consider that UT (and its graphical style - which has been consistent throughout the series) has been around a hell of a lot longer than GoW. So who's taking cues from who?
- HallwayGiant, on 10/12/2007, -4/+21Insane? Yes. New? Eh...
- RWVolkl158, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16Maybe because it was officially renamed to Unreal Tournament 3?...
- molobolo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16Looks real to me, after I saw Gears of War...It's possible.
- AmishRefugee, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15the one with the Leviathan (the bigass tank with 12 wheels) and the one right after it are old, but i've never seen the others
oh and OMFG it looks so gooooooooooood - PleaseJustDie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11@namelessted
I've waited for this game for 2 years and it is living up to everything I've hoped out of it. My only other hope now is that some day I can show you the smiley face. - Rosco, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13@ namelessted
You are correct, there is nothing new about these screenshots at all. This is just more Blog Spam, Mark it as such. - PleaseJustDie, on 10/12/2007, -6/+161) It looks much better than GoW
2) Epic renamed it to UT3, yes it is the 4th game (UT, UT2k3, UT2k4 and UT3) however UT2k4 was essentially a remake of UT2k3 since UT2k3 should never have been released due to serious issues with the performance of the engine at the time. I think Epic just wants everyone to forget UT2k3.
3) This is in game. Epic's engine has been at this quality since they first unveiled its demo a couple years back at a gamer convention. The demo consisted of just a short battle and looked almost as good and everyone thought it was pre-rendered until the rep from Epic got up and started playing the demo backwards and forwards and panning the camera around to see the action from all sorts of different angles to show it is really being processed in real time. For proof look at the shot of the bald guy, his head isn't perfectly curved and his armor isn't perfectly curved if you look closely. If its pre-rendered it would have been. - commiecat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10The question isn't why they would rename it but rather why so many people think that the game developers don't know how many versions were released. UT2004 was just an updated 2003 and they played identically. They don't want people to think that 2007 is just a patched version of 2004.
Straight from Mark Rein:
"Unreal Tournament 2007 is now going to be called Unreal Tournament 3.
We felt the name change is the best way to communicate that this is more than just a series extension of the second series (UT2003 & UT2004) of Unreal Tournament. This is the 3rd generation UT on the 3rd generation Unreal Engine."
Name debate aside, I can't wait for this to finally hit shelves. I'm a total UT and CliffyB fanboy. :) - tsunamitomi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11No, the proper name is Unreal Tournament 3.
- PleaseJustDie, on 10/12/2007, -14/+24These are from the PC version. These make GoW look like quake 1. Epic really knows how to push their engine to its limit.
- Shuk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Its games like these which make me wonder: will we really be thinking that this looks like crap in a few years?
- cJw314, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10
Does anyone even bother with rendered cut scenes that don't use the game engine? - Siraris, on 10/12/2007, -5/+12Yea, these shots are OLD.
- Torx, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10In the 4th picture are they doing a back to the future 2 hover board ride?? lmao
"i got a pitbull!" - Wonotch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7These are all old screenshots. I'm pretty sure i saw all of these on IGN almost a month ago.
Blog spam indeed... - djnitro, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9@ Cthalupa:
Actually, it's called Unreal 3 because this is the 3rd Unreal Engine. UT used Engine 1, UT2K3 and UT2k4 used Engine 2 and this is Engine 3. VCTF FTW!
The more you know! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I guess they want to escape the "Madden" way of naming things?
- PleaseJustDie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5not necessarily, Epic has had this engine running on cards that were available two years ago. With anything of the GeForce 6800 series and later you should get very good quality and good performance out of it. Maybe not this good since I'm sure the best shots Epic releases from now on will be from DX10 compatible cards, but still.
Oh and you can get a GeForce 8800 GTSOC 364mb video card from BFG for 299 now too, so its not too bad to get a sweet gaming card.
And since its Epic the game will be scalable to run on even crap hardware, it won't look like this I'm sure, but you can still get full frame rate even at lower resolutions and graphic settings. - Cthalupa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5My best guess is they're just ignoring the UC1.5 that UT2003 turned out to be, along with being largely a beta for 2K4. Makes sense, I suppose. I still think the numbering name system is lame, though. A madden style system even makes sense - it is a sport, after all.
- sachmanb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Unreal has had a great way to render light and colors ever since it's inception. I was into Quake more, but Unreal always found it's place at LAN parties (not everyone had high speed then), just because it was gorgeous.
- Noesteg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Would it be possible to copy the walkers from 'War of the Worlds' more without having Tom Cruise strapped to them?
- meamog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I see these shots - especially the lat one - and wonder when we're going to see more realistic battle damage, as it were. I want to see my character bloodied and beaten at the end of a match, armor chipped and broken, standing (or slumped) victorious.
- EbenieRosa, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9Wow, I actually really like those Tripods! amazingness!
- CentraSpike, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4ROFL, 7-10 years - are you still using a voodoo 3dfx accelerator strapped to a 2MB pci graphics card?
Try every 1.5 to 2 years and i swear the gap is getting less all the time. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Why didn't anyone ask this about Half Life 2 when it first came out? They had tripod walkers also. Orson Welles FTW!
- Cthalupa, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5UT99 (Or 1 now, I suppose) gameplay with updated graphics would be amazing.
@theragu40
Ever played UT2003? It was largely just a prototype for the console version, and a beta for 2004. It was fun... But not worth it. - namelessted, on 10/12/2007, -5/+9@pleasejustdie, what the ***** are you talking about? I am just as excited about this game as you are but most of those screenshots date back to May of 2006. This is all a huge ***** scheme.
- MrPig, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Well let's go over the situation - they are made on the same engine (not based). They are made by the same company, they are made by mainly the same people and UT/Unreal came out first so if anything - Gears of War copied UT.... however there was no copying involved. They are ALL amazing games.

[Edit]
I guess I should have refreshed before I posted... wrrr....
[/Edit] - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Blogspam, old pictures we've all seen before. Dugg as lame.
- eboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3release the ***** already..i've seen these pictures for 3 years.....
- MrPig, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3If anything - the game will look better than those screens by the time it's out (if your machine (not XBox 360/PS3 because either that will have equal or worse graphics and it's not like you can change them) can handle it).
- Patranus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Any screenshot it STUPID unless it is in game and not "in game". I hate it when all of these companies post "in game" pictures of their games when in-fact it is rendered with an outside program or rendered with the game engine. Rendering with the game engine IS NOT the same as an in game screen shot.
Where is the hud? I really thought this was a FPS, I guess I was wrong. - theragu40, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Have you ever played an UT game? They always play well.
- CoreBurn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Only a couple of these screenshots are recent, the rest were posted on teamxbox.com (which has all these and more plus higher resolution) and other sites back in Aug '06... blogspam... and who the hell uses an interface like that for viewing the full-size versions anymore??
- mazza558, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I'm surprised at how many UT fans there are on Digg. I had the misconception that news of UT3 would never hit the front page, but I am both surprised and impressed.
- cyberpope, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Guys, these screenshots ARE NOT NEW IN ANY SENSE!
These have been around for MANY MONTHS (except for that last one, that one is like only a month old). - G-RaZoR, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I agree with CentaSpike... It used to be 2-4 years, lately it has been getting under 2 years.
I think this is a result of the developers constantly pushing the bar, and nVidia and ATI constantly competing with each other. - FrederikNS, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I'm rather sure that those are indeed "PrintScreens", no matter how tough a computer is on a system, if you have the video-card for the shaders required, you can always max the settings, and then run the game in "slide-show mode" for taking screenshots.
- Thuktun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"No way in hell those are actual screenshots. My vote is CG images."
Non-sequitur of the day, this is. - JohnnyHuh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Dammit, I'm going to have to upgrade my computer to run it but damn, it looks gorgeous!
- socceralien26, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4very old, i had these as my wallpaper ages ago. stupid blogger, get some interesting stories or leave digg alone.
