- mrseptic, on 04/07/2009, -4/+168The outrage should be over the war, not over the video game about the war.
- Gixxer18, on 04/07/2009, -6/+137It's a videogame. Calm the fck down world.
- dzneill, on 04/07/2009, -4/+104If you don't like it, don't buy/rent/play it.
- Harabeck, on 04/07/2009, -9/+74I think games like this could be a valuable tool for portraying the horrors of war. If they give extra points for running over a civilian in your humvee, I think that's in bad taste(but not bannable, freedom of speech). However, if they arrange the game so that avoiding civilian casualties is a huge part of the challenge, I think it could be a useful look into modern warfare.
- vinetari, on 04/08/2009, -1/+55nobody complained about WWII era games, and it was the bloodiest. Those complaining most likely don't play FPS style games, or any games at all for that matter
- unknamed, on 04/08/2009, -0/+53Or, you know.... school.
- RobbleRobble, on 04/08/2009, -0/+51If you type words into Google it auto-corrects for you.
----====* The More You Know - NyteStarNyne, on 04/08/2009, -2/+40ITS A ***** VIDEOGAME. DEAL WITH IT.
- Lunarbunny, on 04/08/2009, -2/+36Hmmm, funny, my Marine coworker (who apparently was in the same batallion as the Marines they're apparently interviewing/using for references) shouted "hell yes" a few times about the announcement.
- kakwakas, on 04/08/2009, -1/+24War is hell. We already have a number of games based on wars, so um... Why the ***** not?
- e36wheelman, on 04/08/2009, -0/+22Yeah, because CoD: Modern Warfare was a huge flop.
- savethehobos, on 04/08/2009, -1/+23WW2 games are totally ok to make even though 400,000 americans lost there lives during it. Seems like a mixed message to me. The message I'm getting is its ok to simulate a game where one of the bloodiest ordeals in Earth's history took place, but if you simulate six days of a marine squad's time in fallujah its controversy...I love the double standards. They're just so...so...great.
/s - pimpofpixels, on 04/08/2009, -0/+21I respect freedom of speech, and I expect that to be reflected in our appreciation of interactive media.
- Gndoab, on 04/08/2009, -0/+20and I don't, so I won't.
But you can feel free to. - trapper2530, on 04/08/2009, -2/+21"Even worse, it could end up in the hands of a fanatical young Muslim and incite him to consider some form of retaliation or retribution…"
does anyone else think that this is slightly racist and stereotypical? i mean what if a young german plays medal of honor or call of duty and want to retaliate for WWII? - Vindexus, on 04/08/2009, -0/+18.com
- EllimistX, on 04/08/2009, -1/+19Dugg for respecting other people's freedom.
- cygnus2112, on 04/08/2009, -0/+16And you know.. Medal of Honor: Vietnam, Battlefield Vietnam, Conflict: Vietnam, Lost Patrol, Men of Valor, Missing in Action, Shellshock: Nam '67, Vietcong, Wings Over Vietnam, Cabal, etc etc
- sirbeta, on 04/08/2009, -0/+16I don't think I'd care personally. I take it you haven't ever played Super Columbine Massacre?
- Tddupre, on 04/08/2009, -0/+15They had a game where you played out the assassination of Kennedy
- lynkdead, on 04/08/2009, -1/+15I bet if someone made a movie/documentary about this same topic there wouldn't be the uproar that this is causing. Bias against video games as a non-serious art form needs to go away.
- Kanten, on 04/08/2009, -1/+14Tell that to Oliver Stone.
- Asianwaste, on 04/08/2009, -0/+12Yes I would. Because the game would only be 10 minutes long and would likely be not all that good.
- Krinkov, on 04/08/2009, -4/+16once again The Onion is years ahead of the curve.
http://www.theonion.com/content/node/27638 - Shazbuckle, on 04/07/2009, -7/+19More Contraversy(spelling?) = More $$$
- luftrofl, on 04/08/2009, -0/+12So all of the other war games are fine?
- woofers07, on 04/08/2009, -1/+13Don't you know the rule? War is only okay if it's at least 30 years old or in a fictional place (CoD), because that way it's "offends" less people.
- the8thbit, on 04/08/2009, -3/+15Yes, GOD DAMN. It's a ***** piece of art. There SHOULD be 9/11 hijacker games and Iraq games, if only to show how artful games can be, and how well they can handle deep content.
- themastersb, on 04/08/2009, -1/+12"Considering the enormous loss of life in the Iraq War, glorifying it in a video game demonstrates very poor judgment and bad taste… These horrific events should be confined to the annals of history, not trivialised and rendered for thrill-seekers to play out…"
WHAT ABOUT THE WORLD ***** WARS PEOPLE?! JESUS H. CHRIST! I think it would at least be proper to complain about those being made into games first. - lioozher, on 04/08/2009, -2/+13Very very very good point.... I want to see Konami come out with that one next...
- WoollyMittens, on 04/08/2009, -0/+10So a bloody invasion is perfectly okay, but don't you dare make a video-game about it.
Makes perfect sense to hypocrites. - Krinkov, on 04/08/2009, -4/+14both of them are about putting out violent videogames that exploit and capitalize on recent tragic events. How did that elude you?
- LawScholar, on 06/25/2009, -1/+11There's also just..you know.. the dictionary.
- e36wheelman, on 04/08/2009, -0/+9Silly digger, white people don't have those barbaric emotions.
- Foot56, on 04/08/2009, -1/+10I love how people get bent out of shape on the wrong things, really a video game? Why not use that energy towards fighting for Veterans that are homeless, medical care, helping vets cope with PTSD. Do I think this video game is in bad taste, sure, I’m just saying there is a hell of lot of other problems that I would consider “more important”
- poprocksandsoda, on 04/08/2009, -4/+13Sounds like it will be a fun game. Perhaps I'll be able to try out my strategy for Fallujah, which was to evacuate the civilians and nuke it.
- elfprince13, on 04/08/2009, -0/+9this game is designed as a documentary, including video interviews with soldiers who were there.
- the8thbit, on 04/08/2009, -1/+10God damn. When are games going to finally be recognized as a viable platform for artistic expression? Perhaps this will be gaming's Schindler's List. I WANT games like this. I want to see games with political meaning, with a social message. We've come a long way since the simple, level-bound worlds of Mrs. Pacman and Super Mario Bros. These games have writers, actors, musicians, directors, all working professionally to create a piece of art as valid as any film, album, or book.
On that note, I hope Kojima is directing this. He's a great director with a nick for political messages, and I'd love to see him work on something a little less fanciful than Metal Gear. (As great as that series is.) - Pullstem, on 04/08/2009, -1/+10Just Rename it. Contra: Iraq
- coldkill3r, on 04/08/2009, -2/+11http://getfirefox.com
- DirtySyko, on 04/08/2009, -2/+10Keep pushing the envelope. Never let anyone try to block your freedom of expression.
I don't care if the game ends up sucking terribly, I just hope it gets released. It's little victories like this that continue to push away mindless censorship. - TheGuruStud, on 04/08/2009, -5/+13Where's the game where I get to play govt officials plotting 911? Haters :)
- Chompy, on 04/08/2009, -1/+9That's your opinion, which has nothing to do with anyone else but you.
- bkraj, on 04/08/2009, -1/+8Or firefox's spell checker.
- pandawa, on 04/08/2009, -0/+7i dont find WWII trivialized and I've played DOZENS of WWII shooters. The good ones just make it more real (like COD;WaW)
- FrogKermit, on 04/08/2009, -1/+8Video games can be just as powerful a medium as movies or books. Maybe they want to say something. Maybe this game will send a deep, emotional, powerful message about this modern war.
- e36wheelman, on 04/08/2009, -0/+6Yeah, I can't remember the amount of times I've virtually defended Stalingrad, (6 million dead) or stormed Omaha Beach. (10,000 dead Allies)
- the8thbit, on 04/08/2009, -0/+6No, it's not too soon.
Give me a short game, put me in the position of one of the innocent passengers, or better yet, a WTC employee trying to escape as the building falls. Make me feel their fear, their loss. Make me feel desperate- make me care about the situation at hand. That is art.
I can just picture a first person adventure game with platforming aspects (kind of like half-life, but without guns) which takes place at the top of the WTC as you, an employee tries to escape. At first you have no idea what's happening, but through the occasional TV or other means of information you learn about the attack you were a part of, etc, etc...
This would make a beautiful game, and, if done right, an emotionally touching game. - Asianwaste, on 04/08/2009, -0/+6http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Konami_Code
FAIL: You start with 3 lives. - mattmacneil, on 04/08/2009, -3/+9I hope they start a war about it.
