- matthewaaron, on 10/12/2007, -6/+45Nice! Go Sony!
- Nobi-Wan, on 10/12/2007, -5/+40The sad thing is that some kid flipping burgers at McDonalds a couple times a week makes more than Sony's game division.
- Ninjab3ar, on 10/12/2007, -3/+28Actually high performace PC rigs are for hardcore gamers.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+31"The sad thing is that some kid flipping burgers at McDonalds a couple times a week makes more than Sony's game division."
A crack addict with a gambling problem makes more money than Sony's game division. That's what happens when you take a loss on everything you sell. - cerilia, on 10/12/2007, -6/+29And the prices of PS3s on Ebay go up in 3... 2... 1...
- PhantomRogue, on 10/12/2007, -5/+25Love the Wildy Inaccurate Title.
FTA:
"The company is airlifting in shipments weekly, and aims to have 1 million units in U.S. stores by the end of the year, Otzman said. She didn't say how many shipments were on hand for the launch."
So wait, the Spokesman said 1 Million by end of the Year, or the Sony Bashing title of 200,000... My guess is somewhere in the middle. - Phyltre, on 10/12/2007, -0/+18"Why would you wait that long to get something just to sell it?"
Money.
Yeah, I'm going with money on this one. - djSyndrome, on 10/12/2007, -2/+20That's an insult to Sega.
- 5thfreedom, on 10/12/2007, -5/+21"Demand for PS3 is from hard-core gamers, who wouldn't opt for a Wii. It's not an alternative to PS3.''
-Todd Mitchell, Research Analyst, Kaufman Bros. Equity
Well, this guy is definitely qualified to define a hard-core gamer. Silly me with my Wii thinking that I was anything other than a n00b. - avisgoth, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17@Blant:
Did you really just equate the purchase of a PS3 to giving birth? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14this just in: 175,000 of them shipped by ebay users
- chicken101, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14God damn you are a nerd.
You just wrote a letter to a website. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -7/+18Yes. $61 million for a multi-billion dollar global corporation. However will they survive?
- truspector, on 10/12/2007, -5/+16200000 ps3s shippped x $305 loss per console = Congratulations Sony, you just lost $61 million. If they can't get their manufacturing refined, or if bluray doesn't truly "take-off", Sony is in some deep trouble.
- MalaysianMafia, on 10/12/2007, -6/+16@ Software2
$61 milion loss to a company whos net profit last year was only $14 million is a lot... - noahhoward, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11I think this is a cry for help, Sony just really, really wants out of the gaming business.
Can't you Sony Fans see your beloved Sony is suffering? If you really love it, you'll let it go. - Ninjab3ar, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12PS3 = return of teh Jaguar!
- djSyndrome, on 10/12/2007, -3/+121. Subscribe to Digg's RSS feed.
2. In your RSS reader, block/ignore any articles with 'PS3' in the title.
3. ???
4. Profit! - Zoids, on 10/12/2007, -11/+20"(firmware updates on day of launch!?"
The Wii has firmware updates too, or did you fail to see that in your rush to bash Sony? - inio, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12PS3 = return of teh 3DO
(nifty tech compared to competetors, but too expensive and limited games) - Ninjab3ar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Actually, spending all that money makes you broke.
- Cougaboy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Last time I checked, a hardcore gamer wouldn't limit him/herself to one system. You're only truly 1337 if you own one of each system ever.
- Covenant9, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9@Zoids:
I am a proud Wii owner and personally I have had no problems with it but....
Zoids is right. Wii did require two updates out of the box and unfortunately, the first update hosed "a few" consoles in the process. - growlzor, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10I swear Bill Gates secretly bought Sony and is running them into the ground
- MalaysianMafia, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9sorry, not last year, last quarter.
- bunkka, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8^^^What Ninjab3ar said. Hardcore gamers need hardcore systems...
- Guspaz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Huh? Only 200k by the end of the year? I call *****.
Current estimates (http://nexgenwars.com/) put the EXISTING sales right now at about ~268k, so they've already sold more than 200k. The 400k by end of year figure still makes sense.
I question how somebody could claim that they will only sell 200k by the end of the year if they've already sold more than that to date. - 5thfreedom, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8If they really wanted out, they would do what Sega did. Except instead of only making games, they would only make blu-ray players.
- ToRoE, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8numbers not confirmed and pretty washy. They interchanged release numbers with end of the year numbers, while talking about current shipments. Also quoting ebay prices from before release is miss-leading, since they sale price dropped dramtically to under 1k, as soon as the glut hit.
Don't get me wrong, I would agree the original release amount was no more then 200k. but I am curious to the real numbers! (its gonna be bad...) - noahhoward, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Of course he does, because he knows the the secret is destroying your customers hope for something better.
- aegis9975, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6people will digg any anti-Sony article, proven last night when the fake PS3 recall article gotten close to 1,000 diggs; pretty sad being that it was proven fake at around 30 diggs.
http://fakerake.com/2006/159/digg-being-useless-ps3-recall-article/ - brstilson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4"Actually high performace PC rigs are for hardcore gamers"
Don't forget the case art that costs more than the components inside. - Nobi-Wan, on 10/12/2007, -7/+11PS3 = Worst launch since Challenger
- noahhoward, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Nah, this will just go down as a kick in the companies nuts. It'll have a squealy voice for a little while but it will eventually be healed by the throngs of people willing to hand over their paychecks for the privlage of owning the name.
Sony is a bit too big to go down that easily I'm afraid. - argh44z, on 10/12/2007, -5/+9PS3 = return of teh Sega Saturn
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5You can be a hardcore gamer without being super-rich. Spending thousands of dollars per year on videogame hardware does not make you hardcore, it makes you rich.
- noahhoward, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Thats right, Digg is a cover operation for Microsofts PR dept. We thought all the Apple stories and sotires about the "founders'" successes would be enough to throw everyone off long enough to ruin the PS3's release but you, sir. We never expected anyone as clever as yourself to come along and uncover our sham. Well played sir, well played.
***** moron. - Xarou, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Ciao dude.
- Avalontor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Yes Ascus, I'm fairly positive that Sony intends to stop manufacturing and shipping now that they have reached their goal of 200,000 units. What do you think?
- Covenant9, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5@arctic:
At least "growlzor" can form a proper sentence. - istatic, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4"The company is airlifting in shipments weekly, and aims to have 1 million units in U.S. stores by the end of the year, Otzman said."
- shelle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2nexgenwars.com shows more than 200K ps3 units shipped...not sure how reliable their numbers are?
- noahhoward, on 10/12/2007, -6/+8That eBay trend is kind of starting to piss me off. I remember seeing one of the first kids to get the PS3 at launch on the news, they asked her what she was going to do with it and she said "I don't know, probably put it up on eBay".
I thought to myself... this girl is going to get jumped by that crowd. Why would you wait that long to get something just to sell it? - SGagnon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3LOL and nexgenwars has counted every PS3 sold, right? They go from what they were told and extrapolate from there as the days pass. Once new hard data comes in, they adjust their data and the process repeats...
- paku, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6I was looking forward to the PS3 until today.. when a co-worker brought in a Wii for all of us to play during lunch.
I thought it would be gimicky, but after a couple rounds of tennis and boxing, I'm hooked.. I remembered what it was like to really enjoy gaming again, instead of grinding through the same routines with better graphics.
Now, instead of waiting for a PS3, I'm going to try and get a controller and nunchuck and wait for the next shipment of Wiis. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Anybody stupid enough to consider buying digg really needs to check out this and other misleading or outright lying stories. Digg is not a news site. It's a collection of competing cabals trying to support there pet topic and drown out opposition.
So mister money man(ie Robert Mudrok), please don't give that drunken bum Kevin Rose any money. Digg just plain sucks because the so-called community sucks. - stung47000, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6The title is not inaccurate. FTA:
[More than half the 150 stores checked by Kaufman Bros. said they wouldn't have enough units to cover preorders, according to a Nov. 16 research note by retail analyst SooAnn Roberts. She predicts Sony will ship no more than 200,000 units to the U.S. this year.
Savner said in a Nov. 7 report that Sony would miss its target. Gikas said in a Nov. 16 note that he expected 200,000 PlayStation 3s available at the U.S. launch and 400,000 by year- end. ]
Now, maybe somebody screwed up a term or a quote, but it does say 200K this year. My guess is the number will be closer to the second estimate [Gikas] of 400K. But not the 2mil Sony boasted about. - Zoids, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3The demand for the PSP was very high around launch from what I saw.
At my local gamestation, my preorder was #183. And I got there early to preorder. I couldn't get one for nearly a month after because of all the preorders. - acurism, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The PS2 is making them money back as it is very cheap to make and still selling more units than the Xbox 360 on a monthly basis.
Sony might be gambling now and for the next 3-5 years as they will be losing money on the PS3, but when they start earning money and get back in the black they are going to be making money like crazy.
That is why they are willing to accept a loss. Short term loss for a long term gain. - shockertwin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2sony should jsut sell them all on ebay...
