- vtwin, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13You'll have access to all levels, and will be able to edit the levels inside the original Mario 64 and play the modified game in your favorite emulator!
June 21st 2006:
--Toad's Tool 64 v1.0b-- (tentative name) The first Super Mario 64 Level Editor in the world, outside Nintendo.
I'm really sorry Linux users, there will only be a Windows and Mac version. - mastercheif, on 10/12/2007, -4/+14 Please, go in a cave and NEVER, go on digg again.
BTW: Dead. - vtwin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11drexo, I bet you say that about anything Nintendo...
Millions of people that are now adults played Super Mario 64 when they were younger. You see, there is something that we, adults, call "nostalgia". - super_duper, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12Very well done. Brings back some good memories.
- dewdrinker19, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8There are only two typed of posts.
1) Normal Posts (ones that are lined up far to the left)
2) Replies (Little bit indented)
You can't reply to replies as of now...
Hope this helps - vtwin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Starmanta your answer goes to show how you don't understand.
In 1996, no one outside Nintendo had figured out the polygon and level format in Mario 64. It took almost ten years for that to happen. The format has been cracked now, this is news to just about everyone on the net.
Can you fly through walls in Mario 64 running on a n64 or emulator? Can you fly for an infinite amount of time? Can you stop in mid-air and take a look at the level from this point of view? Can you see under the levels or see the whole level from the top? Can you take a look at that mysterious room you can fall into when on top of the Castle? Can you see the tunnel connecting the little house to the haunted house from the outside?
You get a freedom that you didn't get playing the original. Most people that played the game for hours are interested to see what's behind the walls and inside the scenery. Many people are interested to take a look "behind the scenes". I don't see how that's so hard to understand. - DragonAura, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9Two words: wicked awesome. I wish they had all the levels though.
- inphiniti, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Sorry about posting twice in such a short span, but I just realized that Mario 64 was made in 1996, making it 10 years old (in September, if I remember correctly.) This might be the first game (not including when i had the NES or SNES because i was not an official "hardcore" gamer back in those days... maybe i was.) that I fully remember for 10 years. This is my first time feeling this 10 year game thing, and I think I made a few adults feel old...
sorry, i realized there is no point to this comment. you may begin neg-modding me. - expertninja, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8If digg is so gay, then why do you leave comments on it, why do you have a digg account, and why do you digg stories?
- KamikazeeDriver, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7linux is not useless, it's just not the standard . . . yet. Until then, I'll agree with masterchief in saying, "Please, go in a cave and NEVER, go on digg again."
- expertninja, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8As a straight person not particularly caring whether you are homosexual or not, I still do not believe that the term you used is acceptable. You can feel free to use these terms, however, saying it's acceptable to use these just because you are a homosexual is just the same as a black person using the "n" word. Feel free to say it to your friends, but posting it on a credible news site is immature and makes you sound uneducated.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6"Now, as for why I called Linux users "*****": It's well known a majority of Linux users are gay, so it's alright, agreed?
And Linux is still useless, in the closet or not."
Go drown and die. - sanza, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I found my N64 in a box about 2 months ago and just for fun I hooked it up. About a month later I put it away again but not before beating Super Mario 64 for the second time (the first time being about 10 years ago). The game holds up wonderfully and I love this link. A big digg from me!
- vtwin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3stanleyfeinbaum:
Whatever... I usually have a policy of not calling people names, but your comment is just dumb...
Why don't you try to accurately reproduce a level from Super Mario 64 in VRML? Seeing how intelligent your comment is I highly doubt you can even understand how it could be done. - vtwin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3ghettobacon thanks for defending the digg, but maybe your post is a little harsh... People stopped adding comments since you posted it :)
- vtwin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Then why didn't we see something like this 10 years ago?
I really don't understand your point.
You like the idea of the editor, but you don't care about the first program (outside Nintendo) to decode and show the Super Mario 64 levels from the original data without running the game? - Osjpr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3JBrown, with that post you sealed your fate.
- jefffm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2lol yeah linux, why are you so damn useless? could you please be more useless for me? i think im going to go host my website on a windows server because i just remembered how useless linux is...
and while i'm at it, i hate liberals, gays, gay liberals, and black people. and linux users, all of which are gay, liberal, and black.
/sarcasm sarcasm sarcasm - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It's because the ones that do not have "reply" are replies themselves. You have to find the "parent" post and reply to it. Wish I could reply to a reply, but jsut think of how disorganized digg comment system would get.
- expertninja, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5It's one thing to to see an occasional curse word or such, but this kind of hate speech isn't what people need to see on digg.com. Honestly, is JBrown still in middle school? Is he going to insult our mothers next?
- HowitZer21, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Hehe nice. For a computer graphics class my group made something like this except it read in Quake 3 levels instead of Mario 64. The first step is getting the map/level in some text format like VRML that you can easily read in and create the geometry for. We also programmed basic collision detection preventing the player from flying through surfaces. We made it in C# using OpenGL to do the graphics stuff. Ours didn't have the right lighting and mipmapping, but we were able to find a few Easter eggs on the undersides of the maps.
- jmcmunn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3
Nice, I think this is the first story out of the last five that doesn't have spelling errors all throughout the title and the summary. Way to go Digg users! Maybe some of us actually graduated highschool! - vtwin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Not releasing a Linux version is not a choice, if I could I would...
- vtwin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Well nice project you got there with Quake 3 :)
But the difference here is that the level and polygon format for Quake 3 is already documented.
Figuring out the polygon and level format for Super Mario 64 was the hardest part. Displaying it was easy. - pfister_, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Is my computer the only one that's getting the ripple effect you see when the front and back clipping planes are too far apart for the z-buffer bit-depth?
- kiddailey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Just having the reply button next to each post and keeping it only two levels would be a huge improvement (so you didn't have to scroll up to hunt for the reply button).
- inphiniti, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3This is really awesome! I think as an addition, you should put where all the stars can be recieved.
- vtwin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Whatever, I decoded the inside of the castle too, it's just not included in the viewer. Next thing I guess, you'll argue that SM64 is better than this viewer because there are enemies and power-ups. This is not a game, it's not meant to replace the original.
I don't mind at all that this is not digg worthy for you, but I think you are way off with that generalization about people that still play the original game.
People that still play Mario 64 on a N64 are usually very interested in this demo. They are real fans of the game, they want to know every bits of it, and now they can see levels from point of views they could only dream of, with a higher resolution. - vtwin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Simply type "Metroid" in Google, and my index page (Metroid Cubed) comes out on the first or second result page. It's currently showing as the 8th result, out of 8 millions... The Castle 64 demo is part of this site. Seach for "Mario 64 online" (without quotes) and you'll find the Castle 64 demo as the first result.
Note that Metroid Cubed is currently offline, I had to replace it with the Castle 64 Shockwave, because it was on another server that didn't have much bandwidth. It may remain so until the digg wave is over. - williamrocks, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3This really does make me feel like Lakitu... :) Definate digg.
- YourTechSupport, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Man. This is too cool. Now to load the entire castle up...
- vtwin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Ok you are right... No Yoshi on top is a good reason not to digg it...
But how about 5 Yoshies on the top of the castle?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j674LLu4HBQ - kamtsa, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3PLEASE HELP:
Why do some comments on Digg do have the Reply link and do not?
(sorry, I could not find a better place where to post this question). - RUFiO006, on 10/12/2007, -11/+12If it's fun 3D Shockwave you're after: http://www.rasterwerks.com/game/phosphor/beta1.htm
- vtwin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Obviously, I meant that September 2006 would be a great release date...
- ghettobacon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2for all u people who are complaining, if you don't like it then shut up. If it was made already, prove it. If its so bad, why couldn't u make it? BTW: It was cool to see, doesnt mean I have to love it. This viewer is a begining step to the potential editor. This didnt HAVE to be realeased it is just showing that they are making progress.
- jurand, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Yeah, Top Accessed Keyword: metroid. How delightful.
- KamikazeeDriver, on 10/12/2007, -6/+6Well no, that's not what we're after. Cool link, but it's quite obvious by the title of this digg what these people are looking for. Try reading the title next time. Give your link it's own digg.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3brings some nice memories to me too. Im just mad theres no yoshi behind the castle!
http://img99.imageshack.us/img99/8018/untitled8md2.png - methegamemaker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is REALLY cool. And like being a camera Lakitu, which has a Vanish Cap, and doesn't have to look at Mario!
Can't wait for that level editor! - Darthmalt, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I love it when sites use extreme tracker. If you want to compare number of diggs to number of page hits go here http://extremetracking.com/open;sum?login=antoooo
- vtwin, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2sidebuster:
So you think it's cool but won't digg it because you can play Super Mario 64 on your DS?
Ok you have the right not to digg it, but your reason doesn't make much sense to me.
Please refer to my reply to Starmanta. "Can you fly through walls in Mario 64 DS?" - KamikazeeDriver, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I gave you a plus, for making me feel old. hahahahah. My first console was atari 2600.
Though the N64 was my last Nintendo, by that time, i was pretty deep into PC gaming. - vtwin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Super Mario 64 was released in September 1996, this would be a great release date for the non-beta version of the level editor.
- vtwin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1The bandwidth should be better now, I hope so...
- expertninja, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Go back to grade school.
- mikegioia, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Is the install Shockwave 10 plugin download not working or broken for anyone else? I can't get shockwave 10 for some reason. if anyone has the isntall file or can point me to it Id appreciate it.
- sidebuster, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I would digg this because it is pretty cool. But the fact is I have a Nintendo DS and the only game I have for it is Super Mario 64. It is slightly different, but still has its nostalgia factor.
- sidebuster, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1No but I can play the game and Go inside the castle. I would understand how this could be cool IF I didn't have access to the game. I am sure guys who still have their n64 with Mario 64 wouldn't find this as cool either. It is digg worthy, but not from me.
- Triangler, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0won't work for me either.
any help will do. -
