- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+33don't forget RTS, some may claim they're finally getting good for consoles, but i'll never play one without a mouse.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+32No, what he said was everything you get with a console you have with the PC for less. All in, that is.
More importantly, he said it in an amusing, cynical old man style. Frankly it was top drawer. - BlackCow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+29PCs still rule First Person Shooter games. Nothing beats the pin point accuracy of a good optical mouse. And PCs are fun to build. And making maps is fun.
- Azio, on 10/12/2007, -3/+28"Name one innovative game that's EVER come out on a PC. EVER."
Are you ***** kidding me? - uberlord, on 10/12/2007, -0/+25You are right in most aspects, but I'd like to point a few things to defend us PC gamers:
1) Strategy Games, you may get a spinoff of something - but strategy games will always be the PC's main strongpoint.
2) Simulators. The indefinite design of PCs, make them transformable - and able to use many things that could not be done on a console - specialized controllers for instance are cheap on a PC - but the same controller would cost more on a 360 because of
A) programming B) Diffficult Licensing C) Retailing.
3) RPGs. Let's look at Oblivion. It's essentially the same game, with the usual amount of difference in controllers (I prefer my mouse) But, let's start out with the Game:
360: Glitchy, No Construction Set, No hotkeys - Strong point, if you don't already have a gaming PC, this option is cheaper.
PC: Depending on hardware and settings, very stable, Construction set to edit your game and add new houses/items/quests ect. VERY useful assignable hotkeys, and for cheaters/laughs/modders: the Control Box - Strong Points, editable, customization, ect.
Community
360: Gamer Points (I think...) The usual forums... ?
PC: Mods galore, adding thousands of hours of gameplay, Textures equaling Gears of War, new weapons and items, better leveling systems, New spells (levitation), an entire gardening system, private houses the size of an island, Mannequins for displaying clothes/armor, Complete Game Overhauls - making it Star Wars, everything from dialogue to weapons (lightsabers, and chubbaka's voice) Soul Gems replaced with Poke Balls. There are so many mods it's just unimaginable. ALL FOR FREE
(it's illegal to buy them as they would be profiting on Bethesda's owned property)
You can see the difference I'm sure. And that's not even counting the best mods available - two currently at about 50% completion - One to combine all 4 ES games onto one map, quests and all + another mod to make Oblivion Massively Online! - tuxidomasx, on 10/12/2007, -2/+26the potential of the PC is nothing short of amazing compared to any of the consoles.
they've had high def gaming for YEARS.
long live PC gaming. - Langford, on 10/12/2007, -0/+20The only thing that really bugs me about the PC vs console situation is that I know PCs could do so much more, if the game companies weren't attempting to make games that could be ported between consoles and PCs.
- doodirock2, on 10/12/2007, -3/+23I still tend to agree with the author though. As must as games are moving to the console area, it doesnt mean PC still dont have more vaule. Just on downloadble content alone, many PC games can people replayed for years to come. Just look at counter strike. Even if you compare Halo on the Xbox to Halo on the PC. At least with the PC version you were able to create all you own maps.
- rctech, on 10/12/2007, -10/+27He has pretty valid arguments but the fact still remains, Console games are more successful than PC games because they are more accessible to the general public. Don't get me wrong, I love PC Gaming but recently, It looks like there are lesser games for the pc since more developers are moving to console development because of the higher number of potential customers (Except in MMORPGs, PCs rule that category).
The problem with PC gaming is that there is no definite standard hardware/software for a system. I'm sure your grandma will be able to download the needed Direct X 10 drivers to play the next big thing in PC gaming . Console manufacturers provides that stable software/hardware platform which rarely changes unless a new console is in the horizon. - dilbertland, on 10/12/2007, -2/+18Care to list your PC specs that you are so disappointed with?
People always say crap like this but when you actually learn what they are running it's something that wasn't even top of the line for a PC 3 years ago......sorry your $750 Best Buy after Christmas clearance computer from 2 years ago doesn't perform as well as the sales guy said it would.... - BrainInAJar, on 10/12/2007, -4/+20"i'll never play [a RTS] without a mouse."
How about a wireless position sensitive pointing device?
Yeah. - autocrawler, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14That's the best editorial I've seen in the last couple of years.
All I can say is: Long live PC gaming! - Araxen, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16MMO's are far off from moving "heavily" to the console arena. MMO's will be mostly on PC's for some time to come. Nothing can replace a keyboard for MMO's which the consoles surprisingly STILL lack.
I play games on every platform and I prefer PC gaming to console gaming. Generally levels are bigger, graphics are always cutting edge(there isn't a lull like on consoles), and unlimited player support(wake me up when consoles can support 64/128 player servers and huge maps to play on), mods, mods, mods, and more mods for too many games to mention. The life of a pc game can live on literally forever with it's mod community..
I like consoles too, they excel at RPG's, Sport games(there is actually competition between publishers on consoles for sports games unlike the PC where only EA really publishes sport games), ease of use, very little need of tech support, only have to upgrade every 5 years or so. - spudnic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12"They are not gaming consoles. They are hobbled, unstable, unreliable, rigid computers in slick-looking plastic cases."
That hit the nail on the head for me, consoles are trying more and more to be PCs rather than consoles (with the possible exception of the Wii) and they just don't compare favorably - oldtimegamer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11The same way you comment made it onto digg. It was posted.
- Llanowar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Couldn't have said it better myself.
- Blitzenn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11And with the advent of items such as the Geforce 8800, Pc's will remain in the horsepower lead quite easily for a long time to come. The new unified graphics adapters for the PC will blow anything else out there so far out of the water there won't be anargument from anyone. Preliminary test already show these things double the power of the absolute next best thing out there. Consoles can't be rewired for it. You have to wait until the next generation.
Game companies have room to step up and wow even the most skeptic gamers with a content and reality One-Two punch. The only point I can agree with is that more and more skilled coders are jumping tracks. The demand is lare enough so that the companies are will to invest in a proven coder from a different platform. They at least know the aptitude is there. The only gamble they have to take is whether the desire still is or not. That can easily be rekindled with dollars though, and thankfully those are coming up again (at least for long term experienced coders). What is a long term coder? It's one who has held a good programming job through the dot com bust. That cleared the house of the wanna-bees left a solid core of staff to draw from. This new trend will only create more jobs and oportunities for new people to 'get in the game' - daridave, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9It's all opinion, but I agree with him.
I have the kind of PC that makes next-gen consoles not obsolete, but not as important as some think. It's funny though, how the #1 argument against PC's was that "they're way too expensive" but people are spending thousandS to get into HD... - joe2683, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10@ Akira
Yes you have played them, but you haven't created them on the Xbox. - Kuipo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11FFXI is a good example, yet it also shows why a cross platform game is a bad idea at the same time. Most PC users don't play with PS2 users and the PC users get a dumbed down version to play on their PC's due to the games need to support a console. Anyone who's played FFXI can tell you the interface is most defiantly a console interface, and when you have a mouse... that just won't do.
- drlha, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9It looks like there are *fewer* games for the pc, not "lesser". Its basic grammar people!
- killinger777, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Halo is great if you have never played a good PC FPS.
- jwasko, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8From The Article:
"What is it with you people and your hatred of wires? Why are you willing to spend more for something that doesn’t work as well? Wires work. They work all the time. And you don’t need to add batteries to every goddamn peripheral you have if you just use the wires to power that f#cker. Wireless adds cost and weight at the expense of reliability. Why in the hell is that a GOOD thing?"
Word.
If it weren't for the fact that the Wii pretty much requires that its controllers be wireless, I would have hated Nintendo for making wireless standard. I never bought a Wavebird, and I will never buy a wireless nunchuck (if they make one).
Edit: Sorry, Mr_bako2. I guess you posted while I was typing. - mr_bako2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8fact is, this is the best article i have read in a long time... thanks alot submitter, i laughed and could relate so well to this article ( :
- Aldrenean, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11@dclowd9901
You name me one "innovative" game on a console that was not done, at least in some rudimentary fashion, on a PC first. Even stuff like Katamari was formed first as a simple game for the PC. I'm not saying that there are no innovative games for consoles; on the contrary, there are many. But console gaming has all of it's roots in PC gaming, and saying there is nothing innovative on the PC is completely ***** ludicrous. In fact, you even named one yourself: Grand Theft Auto! Which, as you obviously don't know, is a franchise that originated on the PC. - Azio, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8"The geforce 8800 is faster than the PS3 GPU. Yes, it is expensive, but PC has already surpassed PS3."
Well it costs less than a PS3. And I can just stroll into just about any computer store and buy one, none of this preordering *****. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Wow, either the last PC you actually used was one from the 1990s or you *really* need to check your hardware/config. The last time I had a BSOD was a random crash from faulty RAM, and that disappeared when I got a new PSU.
Are you being sarcastic? The online community is definitely not better in consoles. I've had heaps of fun playing Tribes and Quake III. And what's this about 'idiotic overclockers'? How in the name of ***** do they affect online gaming? I'd rather have a few people talking about clock rates than a dozen dumbass porn-loving five-year-olds (not that I've ever actually seen any in my Halo 2 escapades, now that you mention it).
I can't wait for the end of next year, when nVidia and AMD/ATi will no doubt come out with GPUs ten times as powerful as the 360's. They don't have 'the same graphics', that's a load of *****. The PC has better graphics than the Xbox 1, soon it'll have better graphics than the Xbox 360 too.
Where's my console version of Half-life 2 Episode 1? Age of Empires III? World of Warcraft? Not all games come out only for consoles, the only games that do were made by people who either are owned by Microsoft or don't want to spend money on QA.
In short, the OP was 100% authentic *****. Get a life, and debug your PC. - Tbab, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Well-written article. He's right on most points imo.
- corcki, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8 I have been going back and forth between console and PC gaming for years now. I agree with almost everything stated. I like both because they each have their pro's and con's. All in all I found it comical and hitting close to home with me. BZ Crane, BZ.
- macbookpromat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7This article is exactly what I've been thinking for the past year. Every time I see someone say PS3 and 360 are next gen, I feel like saying exactly this. Thank you author of the article, and thank you poster.
- BlackCow, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10Windows seems to run video games just fine. People can take their macs and shove it, ill continue to use windows because I like it.
- jgzman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Really, really wish I could digg this twice.
Also, really, really wish they'd release Zelda games for the PC..... - killinger777, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6The geforce 8800 is faster than the PS3 GPU. Yes, it is expensive, but PC has already surpassed PS3.
- mr_bako2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6"Various Wireless Bulls#!t? Oooohhhh! Aaaaaaahhhhh! Wireless controllers. Wireless network adapters. Wireless headsets. Wireless keyboard. Wireless mouse. What is it with you people and your hatred of wires? Why are you willing to spend more for something that doesn’t work as well? Wires work. They work all the time. And you don’t need to add batteries to every goddamn peripheral you have if you just use the wires to power that f#cker. Wireless adds cost and weight at the expense of reliability. Why in the hell is that a GOOD thing?"
i have been saying that for years... nice to hear it from someone else... - culbeda, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9Ok, maybe I'm out of the loop, but I haven't seen or heard of any games windows/PC games that were difficult to join games? And I'd rather deal with the slightly less integrated network support in favor of a far less limited control scheme. FPS'ing using thumb-sticks is weak compared to the PC alternatives.
- walkingdogs, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Couldn't have said it better myself. Now i do plan to buy a wii, but consoles are the poormans gaming computer. If you are a smart consumer and actually plan out a good pc build from the start, and i do mean build not buy preconfigured, you can stay near the top of cpu and graphics performance for a small price. Plus you can do a million more things on a PC than you can ever do on a console. Plus all the graphics technologies that are put into consoles are tested and developed by pc makers for years ahead of time. Enjoy your already out dated mini PC's while I enjoy Crysis, UT2007, Alan Wake and the countless other games that will make this current gen of consoles look outdated the day they come out.
- EviLiu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Awesome article. I had to read it twice. I wish it was longer.
- Mugsleymug, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5@Fibz
line break... carriage return... - crackedsaint, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5All I can say is this cracked me up:
"You know what else offers you the ability to plug in all sorts of crazy peripherals? A f#cking, PC. And it doesn’t stop there. I can plug in a scanner, a printer, a barcode reader, and a motorized fake pu$$y with genuine “lip action” into my PC if I so choose and extend it’s capabilities in a thousand different ways." - rautox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5*snork* @ "hype-guzzling, f#ck-puppet"
Way too familiar with that here at launch time.
Truth he speaketh - gokukuhn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5A big reason more games are being made for consoles is because console owners will buy the bad games, while PC owners are more intelligent and make the better choices on which games to buy. That, and PC owners use bittorrent.
- socokoolaid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5If you can wait, it all comes to PC at dirt cheap prices. Did you ever spend $50 for GTA? A year later and now you can get GTA Vice City for a wopping $10 for the PC! And with a descent PC you can turn the quality and effects up to well surpass the console version. :D
- TerenceDunne, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I have tried to become a console gamer but after several attempts I always come back to the PC. When I compared games like Rainbow Six and Battlefield on both platforms the controls and smaller versions of the multiplayer maps just did not work for me. If Microsoft would allow a keyboard and mouse to work with the 360 I would try again. I am really interested to see how the Shadowrun game is going to work. IMHO the console gamers are going to get their asses kicked.
- Gnome1300, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5A spark of intellect in the stupidity ocean that is the internet (according to Something Awful at least). A brilliant read!
- OutofExile, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4This is the best thing I've ever Dugg.
I agree with 85% of what this guy says.
Community content, mouse/keyboard interface (oh my God, so much better and more accurate than the analog stick thing), better graphics, more customization, cheaper games, more complex/deep/interesting games, better online multiplayer experiences, etc.; I'll always first and foremost be a PC gamer.
But, at the same time, there are some great series on consoles that won't see the light of day on the PC until the emulators start working in seven years, most notably Final Fantasy and Zelda. It's hard to ignore those. Also, splitscreen gaming with friends is a blast. But sadly it looks like the focus is going more to online gaming with the consoles these days (no splitscreen deathmatch in Gears of War, I hear. Bummer! Defeats the whole purpose!).
I crack up at the Wii virtual console thing, just because I already have all those games in emulators on the PC. I even play N64 games in 16:9 1080p high definition. I'm not even kidding you. Emulators are awesome.
But don't get me wrong, I've got a Wii preorder ticket nonetheless. ;)
Still, I think this guy is dead on.
Oh, and I totally agree with everyone so far who has said that Halo is the most overrated game ever. I'm sure if I had played it without already having spent hundreds of hours in Unreal Tournament and Starsiege Tribes already, I would have thought it was pretty cool, but by PC FPS standards, even for its time it was pretty subpar. - autocrawler, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4In fact, both the Radeon X1900XTX and the Geforce 7900 are more powerful than PS3's graphics system.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4"Consoles touting “Downloadable Content” is the metaphoric equivalent of a bugle playing taps at the funeral for “Quality Control”. Sure, the music sounds beautiful, but it’s not exactly a happy day, is it?"
Awesome. Soooo dugg. - felchdonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4The most (accidentally?) insightful part of this, to me, was:
"By 2010 I predict the porn industry will no longer need human actors. That’s right. There will be stuff on your computer that will make the “Hot Coffee” mod look positively tame."
I actually think he's right. Imagine what will happen to the porn industry when graphics get so good that they are indistinguishable from human actors. For that matter, what will happen to all the 19-year olds that are just "doing a couple softcore flicks" while they get their acting career off the ground? What will they do for work when they are replaced by the DOA girls? - Nydas, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Unlike consoles, you don't have to buy a new system just to play the newest games. You could do this little thing were you spend a couple hundred were you upgrade a graphics card and maybe some ram, then.....BAM. Your good to go for a year or 2!
Wow! Shocking! Amazing! Your computer just became better then a PS3 for half the price! - zorikin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Even worse, they're trying to be WebTV boxes. Or coin-ops - Lumines Live?
