- derfunkenstein, on 05/08/2008, -3/+78this is a really awesome story. Wish my dad (who's only 55!) was more like this...I guess I'll be more like that to my kids.
- TheWorm, on 05/08/2008, -1/+19My dad is 65, but he still beats me every time in Madden. I don't know how he does it. He's terrible at every other game.
- Asvetic, on 05/08/2008, -0/+2Madden is a game of strategy, not necessarily skill... your old man knows how to pick plays that whoop your ass!
- ligyron, on 05/08/2008, -0/+6Yeah, the times are changing. I still get freaked out when I hear people say stuff like "My father got me into this game, he used to play it a lot" and stuff. I can not relate. We're just going to hear it more and more until it's a common thing
- MasterGrief, on 05/08/2008, -0/+6I'd love to think that I'd be like this, but then I think... I'm not sure my hands will work well enough to use a controller in fifty years!
Course, in fifty years, it stands to reason that I'll probably be playing games with one of those mind-reading thingies, so arthritis might not be such a concern.
- TheWorm, on 05/08/2008, -1/+19My dad is 65, but he still beats me every time in Madden. I don't know how he does it. He's terrible at every other game.
- haxr, on 05/08/2008, -1/+80This is a great story. It's nice to be able to share something like that with your dad, and nice for him to be interested in something new at his age.
- Enasni1212, on 05/08/2008, -0/+45My dad's 56, and he's the one who got me into gaming. He'd played arcade games growing up, but largely left gaming behind when he got married. One day when I was 5, he brought home an SNES out of nowhere, and neither of us looked back. He managed to beat Goldeneye on Double Agent difficulty before I did, something he still calls one of his proudest achievements (and I honestly can't tell if he's being sarcastic). He's currently playing Call of Duty 4, Team Fortress 2, and just recently finished portal. My dad's awesome.
- Akaji, on 05/08/2008, -0/+12/envy :(
- RisingAgainst, on 05/08/2008, -0/+1Well, I can't get my parents to play most games, but I guess I should feel grateful that they've at least tried once or twice. We once got our dad to play Air Force Delta on the xbox for a bit, but not very long (it was a demo). He hasn't played many others since, but he did once try Nintendodogs after I bought if for my younger brother, my mom never let us get a dog, and he was actually amazed at the interactions he could have with the dogs, most of all when they all came pawing at the screen when they were called. So lately, I've just had to....not necessarily resort, but move on to talking to him about the games I play, my dad was always a huge book reader (Daniel Silva stuff) so he actually gets interested watching me play, and then later going into a 2 hour long conversation with him about stories like the one in Assassins Creed, and more recently I was just telling him a little bit about Army of Two and the ties it makes with real life events, however unsubtle it may be. It's interesting at the very least to try to interest my parents into picking up a game, but also equally so to talk to them about it. I think you just have to find something that will interest them, and slowly introduce them to it, whether they're just spectators, or you're actually trying to introduce them into playing it themselves.
I just wish I could get my mom to sing the songs i purposely bought for her in rock band. She said she would. She didn't.

- morninglorii, on 05/08/2008, -2/+27This week on Xbox Family Center - shoot some pool with mom, shoot some cops with dad, shoot some heroin with grandma! Grand Theft Auto IV has everything you need to please the whole crew!
- Shaflugi, on 05/08/2008, -0/+14It's quite possible. Ask your parents if they want to steal cars and run over pedestrians, they may just answer yes.

- TwoKill, on 05/08/2008, -11/+59Someone should tell the guys dad that the downloadable content is 360 only, especially if he's gonna buy a console just to play it.
- Coy0te, on 05/08/2008, -13/+4Someone should tell him that it looks better, loads quicker and has less pop-in on the PS3.
- bagelmaster, on 05/08/2008, -3/+8Better graphics or more gameplay... hmm...
- Shaflugi, on 05/08/2008, -0/+25Somebody should tell him to never go on the internet because it's full of bickering fanboys.
- petebot, on 05/08/2008, -0/+1He's probably stayed away from the internet ever since not being able to open pictures attached to his prodigy email account.
- Blandyman, on 05/08/2008, -4/+6The differences in graphics on PS3 and 360 are negligible... it's a matter of taste. The 360 version is more vivid, while the PS3 is more subdued.
There is indeed less pop-in on PS3, but that still don't change the fact that for an extra $150 that mother-***** BETTER have less pop-in.
And, Xbox Live is still better, $50 or otherwise. Suck it, Trebek.- aceakm, on 05/08/2008, -0/+3Actually, the PS3 is only like $60 more. But I wouldn't know since I got it on Black Friday for $240.
- Psythik, on 05/08/2008, -3/+2The 360 version actually loads faster, but only by about 3-5 seconds.
- aceakm, on 05/09/2008, -1/+3Wrong. PS3 loads faster due to being downloaded onto the PS3 Harddrive. Thanks though.
- Psythik, on 05/13/2008, -0/+1Wrong. That's what R* wants you to think. Here's a completely unbiased test done by a 360 owner, and a PS3 owner, showing that the 360 loads 3-5 seconds faster:

- Raptor007, on 05/08/2008, -7/+6I love the GTA4 controls on the 360. The analog triggers for gas and brake work perfectly.
What do they use for those inputs on the PS3? L2 and R2 are digital buttons, right?- nbanman, on 05/08/2008, -5/+5L2 and R2 are triggers, but there's not as much play, and they're awkward to use for racing games (it feels like my finger's falling off the controller).
I love my PS3, and we're catching up in terms of game quality, but the 360 controllers are way better than Sixaxis. - volacide, on 05/08/2008, -1/+6Anyone who has problems with the L2 or R2 buttons is either a retard or not holding the controller correctly. They work fine and I have never, yes, NEVER felt like my hands were falling off of the controller or have trouble delivering very precise analog control with the trigger buttons. In fact I changed the acceleration and braking in Gran Turismo 5 Prologue to R2 and L2 respectively and I find that it works even better than the 360 controller. I feel like I'm much more precisely able to apply varying levels of pressure to it and it translates exactly in the game.
I love the 360 controller, it's a brilliant design especially for racing games and shooters. Although I find the face buttons a little too bulbous and not as responsive as the classic face buttons on a DualShock controller and obviously the D-Pad on 360s controller is pretty terrible in comparison to the DShock.
Both controllers work just fine. Why do people insist on arguing about every little thing? There's nothing inherently wrong with either.- nbanman, on 05/08/2008, -1/+5I can't really imagine how I could hold the controller differently, so I guess I must be a retard. Thanks for letting me know. All these years I've been laboring under the misapprehension that I was at least of average intelligence.
I guess when we're talking ergonomics, I should ALWAYS include a YMMV caveat. So I'll rephrase. In MY hands, using the L2 and R2 buttons as triggers is uncomfortable.
An IGN write-up confirms my experience; I'm not the only one: http://ps3.ign.com/articles/738/738858p2.html
"What's more, the triggers are convex, with no grooves to keep your fingers in place - an issue further compounded by their smooth finish, offering no resistance against your finger tips. Invariably we found our digits slipping off with the triggers snapping back to their default position."- volacide, on 05/08/2008, -0/+1Yes, you're actually holding it wrong. Because most of you people try to hold it like the old DualShock2 controller and when you want to use the button you pull directly backwards, towards you. With the DualShock3 you have to pull back towards you and up. It's not difficult at all.
I just put the controller in my hand and again I cannot even imagine how anyone has trouble with it. The only way I can get my fingers to slip off is if I pull down and back so yes, you people are clearly holding it incorrectly, or if you want to get really specific, using it incorrectly.
I simply cannot even comprehend losing my grip on the buttons, it's quite honestly an impossibility for me. It's never happened and I cannot wrap my head around why so many people have trouble with it. It is so ***** simple.
That article seems a bit sensationalist because no one complains about that anymore. Back then it was still cool to hate on the PS3 for no apparent reason, that time has passed and you don't see anything like that anymore. In fact you see people praising the DualShock3 now: http://retro.ign.com/articles/871/871181p2.html
Greg Miller's take is particularly interesting.

- tech42er, on 05/08/2008, -1/+1The Wii controller is probably the best.
/sarcasm - lumbergh, on 05/08/2008, -0/+3L2 and R2 are analog, and they work just fine by me. As someone else said I assigned accelerate and brake in GT:Prologue to R2 and L2 respectively and the meters definitely show analog intermediate states.
- nbanman, on 05/08/2008, -5/+5L2 and R2 are triggers, but there's not as much play, and they're awkward to use for racing games (it feels like my finger's falling off the controller).

- LeatherCow, on 05/08/2008, -5/+3Deep inside, the elderly just want to extract their malicious revenge upon society for the high cost of medication. GTAIV is just an outlet. Cool dad though. - Cheeselover, on 05/08/2008, -0/+26Great story, really nice to see a game like GTA actually bringing people together. I wish my dad could get into games, but he hasn't been able to keep up with me since the days of Ghost Recon when I was 9.
I remember trying to get my grandma to play ATV Offroad Fury when I was sick at home with pneumonia. She got stuck against a cactus for 3 minutes.- DeathJux, on 05/08/2008, -0/+1"She got stuck against a cactus for 3 minutes."
lol... isn't that frustrating, watching someone "doing it wrong" and not being able to help?
- DeathJux, on 05/08/2008, -0/+1"She got stuck against a cactus for 3 minutes."
- Mooinakan, on 05/08/2008, -0/+1Nice story, but my dad would never do that because he doesn't have the patience to discover the things this guy's dad did.
- XIStEw13IX, on 05/08/2008, -0/+16thats what im gonna do when im retired, get an awesome tv, the latest console, and a sick gaming rig and just play games all day.

lol, just kidding, loved the article. - Stevethegreat, on 05/08/2008, -12/+1Yet there is nothing in consoles that cannot be done to PCs, in fact better so. It's funny how the writer presents the PS3 experience as an experience from the future while in fact it is an experience from the past (the whole controller in hand, TV set against, is being done over and over again the last 30 years without any variation, well, sans the Wii).
If there was not for vested interests and the demise of the PC as an ever-evolving platform we wouldn't have to turn to the consoles' reinvention of the 90s genres of PC gaming presented as something revolutionary, instead we would have had something new to concern with, who knows even a new way of gaming. Touchscreens, 3D screens, real VR but nooo we're now captives of the slow one-sided evolution of TVs which are pretty much viewing panels and they don't seem to want to evolve to something different (because after all that's what they're for to show stuff) and the anti-Moore's law consoles which include yesterday's hardware and and building-of-the-games logic in the price of tomorrow. Well, congratulations, I have only to add that FPS, Strategies, Simulations, Adventures and Sandbox games (GTA included) which are pretty much of the most complex genres, originated on PCs and while this does not mean that they won't do well in consoles it only gotta show you how uninventive the console market is (just developing on old ideas, sans the Japanese who only care for consoles 30 years now and they're the only innovating there) and how out of the box thinking was going on to the PCs (you must be a madman to think that FPS could work and that you could develop them into real games, this experimentation would never happen on a console due to the ***** royalty costs and -you- being -essentially- property of the console manufacturer, so 80s)......- DavidGX, on 05/08/2008, -0/+5Enjoy gaming with your photoshop controllers.
- Stevethegreat, on 05/08/2008, -3/+1No you don't get it, I was not lauding kyboards and mouses, that's not for me to do I don't play PC games. I was speaking about open architectrure and no propriety software. I saught not to touch gaming unless it becomes something worthwhile , console gamign is as childish as ever and it will remain so for the next 100 years because innovation does not exist there except if it is coming from Japan in which case I don't care.
- DavidGX, on 05/08/2008, -0/+1There's no innovation.. except for all that innovation which isn't from America so you don't care. That's great. You should do stand-up.
- Stevethegreat, on 05/08/2008, -2/+1...and Europe and Australia. Yes there is no innovation coming from the West in consoles, you'll get the best games from Japan but I just don't care for their aesthetics and weird kind of thinking, why should I bother myself with the weirdness of the games like ICO while I could deal with gems like Half Life, Planescape, Fallout or even Civilization before them?

- Akaji, on 05/08/2008, -0/+3Fanboyism's a hell of a drug.
- Stevethegreat, on 05/08/2008, -3/+1I don't play PC games, you're a fanboy who thought that I was a fanboy, I made a point based on rationality, yet you didn't.
- burnstyle, on 05/08/2008, -1/+6....sigh....
as a fan of pc gaming i must tell you:
shut the ***** up!
you are giving the rest of us a bad name.- Stevethegreat, on 05/08/2008, -2/+1I'm not a fan of PC gaming, I'm happy it dies a slow death because frankly PC fanboys were the most annoying and now they exist all the less. I was only making a point that gaming is doomed now that it is a child's toy played by "prepubescent adults".

- nonymous666, on 05/08/2008, -9/+4So does the author have a PS3 or a 360? He can't seem to make up his mind.
"so I sat him down in front of the television and booted up the Playstation 3"
"my dad... who sits by my side as I zip through a handful of missions on the Xbox 360"- sfcaptainrob, on 05/08/2008, -1/+12sounds like he has both.
- nonymous666, on 05/09/2008, -0/+1.
- IllBeBack, on 05/08/2008, -7/+3I noticed the same thing. This seems to suggest that the whole story is a fake and is merely a PS3 commercial.
- screwfanboys1, on 05/08/2008, -1/+5*rolls eyes*
not everyone is a stupid fanboy like you who has to love one and hate the other, SOME people like all of the consoles for different things. You'll understand when you're old enough to afford your own video games. - warplayer, on 05/08/2008, -0/+2I think since he is a reviewer he has both systems and both copies so that he can review them and compare.
- hassanchop13, on 05/08/2008, -1/+3hmm... editor on the biggest videogame blog and one of the biggest video game websites in the world... no way he might possibly have multiple consoles.

- Ryan166, on 05/08/2008, -9/+1How over dramatic is this article??
"He's starting to get it, I can see it in his pale blue eyes, his red-rimmed pale blue eyes. He's starting to like it."
*vomit*- IllBeBack, on 05/08/2008, -0/+1It's no different than a crack dealer giving you your first taste and bump for free, and then reeling you in like a fish.
- MasterGrief, on 05/08/2008, -0/+2You've got a weak stomach, Ryan.
The guy's just trying to write in an interesting fashion.
- DavidGX, on 05/08/2008, -9/+1The ps3 version? That's called mistreating your parents/the elderly. It's not cool.
- aussieNickuss, on 05/08/2008, -0/+10That guy sounds just like me.....only so much older. I suck at gaming. My hand-eye coordination (with a console controller) isn't quite good enough for me to play any game and I rarely ever get past the first few levels of any game......so I gave up gaming when I was in school.
The only game I do love, enjoy and can play really well is GTA. Only the PC version though, because I'm much better on the mouse/keyboard controls than I am with a controller. It's the only action game I can play without failing all the time. I can't wait for GTAIV to come to PC. - gplpark92, on 05/08/2008, -1/+4i wonder what he thinks of COD2 and Medal of Honor Airborne
- gplpark92, on 05/08/2008, -0/+1even if he was really young, his direct family still lived through that time and therefore its still relevant
- joegibes, on 05/08/2008, -0/+2He probably thinks what the rest of us know-- that CoD2 is LEAGUES better than MoH:A.
- jmoo1, on 05/08/2008, -1/+2Gold, but now I can't stop singing Cat Steven's Father & Sun
- IpwnZnoobs, on 05/08/2008, -0/+1Funny, well written. I don't think my grand-pa would be able to play GTA .
- IllBeBack, on 05/08/2008, -1/+2It seemed well-written right up until the last sentence, and then this happened:
"Despite it's [sic] roots in hardcore gaming, I've come to realize that GTA can be every bit as attractive to casual gamers, [sic] to the Second Life set as it is to those who live and breath [sic] 360 and PS3."
Now that is one suck-ass of a sentence. It was disappointing for an otherwise interesting article.
- IllBeBack, on 05/08/2008, -1/+2It seemed well-written right up until the last sentence, and then this happened:
- becknell, on 05/08/2008, -0/+2Excellent story. I'm only 22 and can't help but wonder what video games will be around for me to struggle at when I'm 70.
- kextype, on 05/08/2008, -1/+1My dads like most days loves a bit of wii, but gta would be a bit too much nowaydas, he did get banned from over playing sonic though on the megadrive :p
- Jenadae, on 05/08/2008, -4/+2I'm sorry to tell you dude, but your dad's a furry :(
- bob12321, on 05/08/2008, -2/+1If that where true, how do you know?
- Jenadae, on 05/08/2008, -1/+2Second life...
- bob12321, on 05/08/2008, -2/+1If that where true, how do you know?
- dvsbastard, on 05/08/2008, -0/+1About the only game I can get my old man to play is Wii Tennis... but that is not to say he isn't interested in other gaming, as he sometimes will stop and watch me while I play other games (including GTA4) for a while... I just don't think he has the patience to learn - because face it, compared to the Wii, some of these games are very complicated to get into for someone who has never gamed in their life...
- xsidekick409, on 05/08/2008, -2/+23Did anyone else catch this?
"My step-dad is intrigued too. His interest lasts about ten minutes before it turns to boredom, and he falls asleep next to my dad... who sits by my side as I zip through a handful of missions on the Xbox 360."
Seems strange to me that a step father and father would be on good enough terms with one another that they could sit down next to each other to play video games, but then again, thats just my opinion. Maybe since he's 70 hes dealt with the break by now.- masterofshadows, on 05/08/2008, -0/+13Or maybe they are respectful to each other for the kid's sake.
- SkinnerBox, on 05/08/2008, -0/+1Yeah, that seemed wierd to me too. Maybe my experience with divorce is a lot different than most.
- gzmask, on 05/08/2008, -1/+2no offense man, but when you ex is one big fat ugly woman, you will never mind making friend with a nice guy who take care her for you.
- tehknotte, on 05/08/2008, -2/+2I thought it would be a funny video or story about an old man playing GTA. That article was weird and didn't deliver.
- hechtal, on 05/08/2008, -2/+5I know I'm in the minority here but the problem isn't old people playing the game, it's kids. Every day since its gotten warm the disrespectful, asshole kids across the street wind up on my lawn trying to smash squirrels with their skateboards, or, on one memorable occasion, were seen diving to the ground and claimed they were "wrestling rocks."
Ever since GTA4 came out they've been nowhere to be found - I can only assume their crack-whore trailer trash moms bought the game for them.
Just what they need in life right? Not something healthy or intelligent. Jack Thompson is an asshole, but so are the people who let their kids play stuff like GTA 4. (a game which I have played, and find very well done BTW).- geodescent, on 05/08/2008, -0/+1What you need is a fence. Or land mines.
- Ploppyplop, on 05/08/2008, -0/+1On the plus side, they've been nowhere to be found.
- ptFoe, on 05/08/2008, -2/+1Total rip off the Ubuntu & Grandma articles.
Canonical will hopefully send a cease and desist letter. - Ramenhood, on 05/08/2008, -2/+0"I've come to realize that GTA can be every bit as attractive to casual gamers"
:O Never! - qwertyuio, on 05/08/2008, -2/+3I catch him the next day, after another marathon session, talking to my step-dad, who is also visiting the house with my mom.
Awkwarrrrrd...- VinnieDaMac, on 05/08/2008, -0/+1Yea lol, what about the part where his step dad and his dad were playing the game together and his step dad passed out next to his dad?....lol
- warplayer, on 05/08/2008, -0/+2Yeah I got a kick out of that too. Then I sort of thought about it and I pictured this guy getting divorced and playing second life the rest of his life. Kinda depressing, actually.

- roebeet, on 05/08/2008, -2/+4His father may be 70, but he's definitely not an "old man".
- gingerchris, on 05/08/2008, -0/+3are you insinuating that his father is a woman?
