Great... the 'Friend Code system' again. Do you think that maybe if you're under 12 then you use that, and if you're older you can use usernames? Because honest to god, if Nintendo wants to get serious online, they can't use those stupid friend codes. - arunforce, on 10/12/2007, -2/+52Source: neiltc13

the wii dev kit is actually less than the ps3. much less. - Farodek, on 10/12/2007, -1/+24i don't see why everyone gets upset about the friend code thing, if it's anything like mario kart ds, you have the option to use friend codes or to just play with random people.
- cderry, on 10/12/2007, -3/+23How else do you plan to use its wireless capabilities without wireless?
- Antialias, on 10/12/2007, -7/+26@seanspace6
He was making a joke that the Wii dev kit cost less than the ps3 console itself. - jangell, on 10/12/2007, -1/+19Actually, I think it makes perfect sense, more so than wired ethernet. How many people have ethernet in their living rooms with their TV? Ok, we're geeks, so we do (well, I don't... yet). But how many average people do? I'm talking casual gamers here, the kind Nintendo are targeting with the Wii. And what about the kid's room? They might not even have a computer, much less ethernet. Having to run wires around your house just to play games online is a bit of a pain.
However, as previously mentioned, you'll still be able to buy a USB ethernet adaptor, and those are pretty cheap, so it's not that much of an issue if you really want to go wired. - warfang, on 10/12/2007, -2/+19Wires are annoying, plus you can get really good wireless routers for $30-$50.
- shakin, on 10/12/2007, -2/+19802.11b is faster than 90% of the broadband connections available in North America. You'll rarely find a server that can saturate 11Mbps. 802.11g is way faster than you're going to need for this generation of systems.
- Vejadu, on 10/12/2007, -2/+18The Wii is going to be the first online experience for many people and Nintendo doesn't want to scare off new players. If their first online sessions are filled with disrespectful, foulmouthed 13-year-olds and their juvenile trashtalk, it's going to chase potential gamers away.
Also consider that a console with games aimed at children has to police who can talk to your children. If online Mario games were unregulated, it would be a breeding ground for child molesters. - Alucard90, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16On the Hardware page, it says you can get a USB to LAN adapterso that wont be a problem
- gmurray, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16I dont think it's going to be as robust as XBox Live as far as services go. But we'll atleast be able to play games online with it. :)
- theGrue, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14The quick solution to that is... Buy a Linksys!
- The_Decryptor, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12Call me crazy, but i like the idea of friend codes, if done well. (e.g. Mario Kart DS, i can play with anybody i want, or limit it to people i know via the codes)
- Scottish, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12Merlyn: Xbox Live is policed by the entry fee. If parents are worried about their children's safety on Live, they don't pay for the account, and (most) children will have no other avenue of access.
- theGrue, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11Also, don't buy blindly, have a look at the compatibility list first:
http://www.nintendowifi.com/customersupport/supportedRouters.do - ahatter, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12im sure they have learned alot from the ds online and are able to do alot more with the wii aswell.. so i think there will be alot of improvments to the "friends code" thing.
- philgmo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9bebop: Reports are saying that the controllers run on AA's. But nothing's stopping you from using rechargables, and if the battery life is anywhere near as good as it is with current-gen wireless controllers I won't have any problem with it (I've been very happy with the battery life of my Wavebird controllers and Logitech controllers for PS2 and XBox).
- SmeRndmGy, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12Key word: Free. I never bothered to sign up for xbox live because it has always seemed really lame to me to pay a monthly fee for a video game, but if it was free I would definately use it. I have no intention of buying this system, (unless it is also free), but I am very glad to see companies moving towards a free online gaming system.

- pernicat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7A big improvement to the friends code system would be to have one friend code for the Wii so you don't have to use different friend codes with every game you play unlike the DS.
- MerlynXLII, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8From Hardware section:
"It also will be home to new games conceived by indie developers whose creativity is larger than their budgets."
I don't remember Nintendo ever coming out and saying indie developers would be able to host contect on the virtual console system. First for me. And great too. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Wifi connection has been free since Mario Kart DS. No surprises.
- indirect, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Perhaps this page is a work in progress? It is supposed to be 'hidden'.
- RyanWilliams, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Nah, not really. I'd love to wake up and find I've got a new car to use in Mario Kart Wii or something. :)
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9@Antialias (lollerscatercopters, on tracks, on ice)
What? - masamunecyrus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Yea, it's kind of dumb. At least USB Wi-Fi dongles are cheap.
- vonnie, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10What is the friend code system anyway? I'm not that familiar with nintendo's online play system..
- adrocknaphobia, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Its important to protect the younger gamers. The friend code system is a very minor hassle on the DS and I don't think it will be that big if a deal on the Wii.
- Hydroxyl, on 10/12/2007, -5/+11I agree. But I'm a little more concerned with it requiring a wireless router.
I have one, most people do. But I feel more secure with a wired connection for gaming, so I won't get that much lag and stuff.
I have they allow for direct connections via ethernet. - HoboMaster, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6No kidding... Buy a Linksys and run it on WEP. I've got a Linksys AP and another Linksys AP running as a wireless repeater, and my DS has never had a problem.
- SkippyDoorknob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I think Animal Crossing requires specific friend codes instead of just random people.
- lion2, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8 The friend code system is absolutely horrible. It makes online gaming a pain especially when you have different friend codes for every single game. And if your memory gets erased then you lose your old friend code (happened to me with my copy of mario kart). Also Mario Kart doesnt even let me choose WHO I want to play with. It lets me choose a "CLASS" of people (friends or strangers) I want to play with but you dont have the choice of playing with a specific person the game will randomly pick your friends (can't play one on one matches online either). Most matches take a long time to start (Mario Kart, Tetris Ds and Metroid Hunters are examples). It would also be nice to have voice chat in every single game at ALL times (not just in lobbies). It's annoying having to call friends on my cell phone in order to have voice chat.
Nintendo really needs to have a username system that's the same across all games. This change alone will make the WFC soooo much better. - GodsHand, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Wii controllers last 30 hours with the tilt sensors active, or 60 hours with a virtual console or other type of peripheral device.
- pbaehr, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9I have a wireless router, but I'd really like the option of hooking the Wii up to my wired network for the sake of speed and reliability.
- enforcerpsu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Um. How is it a pain? Turn DS on, play game online. wow. that was tough. YOu have to visit one page at nintendo wifi and register your account, just like any online game.
If you are talking about the whole router/set up thing its not any harder than getting a PC on the network. If you can't figure it out RTFM. - mrgreen4242, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Sure, friend codes suck for adults, but it's great for kids/parents. I am assuming that, in games where it makes sense, you'll be able to play with anyone but only communicate with people on your friend list, just like Mario Kart DS. That would cover transfering items, voice chat, etc.
The only thing I hope they change is making it easier to get a friend code onto your list. Something integrated with Nintendo.com so I can email you my code and vice versa, and just click a link in the email and log into my account on my computer, automatically accepting your code to my list. - madc0w, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5DAMN FRIEND CODES! Thats like the one reason that I don't play ds online. The friend codes don't tell you when people are online, so basically you have to call them or schdule games. Also, there's no way to do pickup games like in xbox live. I seriously hope they change this *****, it's a horrible system. And BTW, matchmaking doesn't work for MK.... At all... My first game I went up against some insane snaker, who lapped me. It sucked.
- G3K0, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Super Smash Dojo is the name of the official Super Smash Brothers (Brawl) site.
- Cyborg771, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3You are exciting? Well I must remember to hang out with you some time!
- Ashkc88, on 10/12/2007, -8/+11Almost everything on the internet is a "breeding ground for child molesters." We'll let their parents worry about monitoring their kids on the internet, its not Nintendo's job.
- Zoltak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I know this isn't about your post here, but it is about the USB adapter you mentioned earlier.
Just to clarify, that adapter probably isn't to create a wired connection but will be similar to the Nintendo DS USB Wireless adapter, if not the same thing. - Universal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Wii + Wi-Fi = Wii-Fi
- donsherio, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Credit to Neil btw. just reposting incase someone doesnt see it.
- Pluckie, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Someone at Nintendo IT noticed a flood of traffic to the site that wasn't supposed to be up, and now it's GONE...
anyone have screenshots? - indirect, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3On a related note, I have a D-Link DI-514 wireless router & had to get the usb adapter because it would not work with my DS. If it doesn't work for the Wii I'll be getting a new router I suppose.
- DuoPros, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Is anybody else getting a 404 error?
edit: sorry, they got there before me! - noliberalbull, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6all it really is is an IP type system... not really any different than many pc games
- havaloc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Please, I hope it supports WPA.
