- DirectTulip, on 10/30/2008, -5/+169that's not so much money... for advertising presidential campaign...
- silver26, on 10/30/2008, -3/+142Considering the news items it's generated, that's a pretty low number.
- doiveo, on 10/30/2008, -2/+111good bang for the buck
- pulseczar101, on 10/30/2008, -3/+94Ron Paul tried to do the same but video game companies don't accept gold dubloons
- ochimaru, on 10/30/2008, -7/+50Anybody notice that he spent $44k on "online advertising" instead of "in-game advertising" as the article title suggests? Quite a leap of logic just for some hype. I'm betting most of that money was put into web-banners & other online advertising.
- JDoorjam, on 10/30/2008, -2/+34Damn, that's all it cost?! I should scrape together a hundred bucks and get a "JDoorjam is Awesome" billboard in GTA IV or something.
- Neiby, on 10/30/2008, -10/+38Not really. The greater point is that this is a novel way to spread the word, and McCain's campaign never would have thought of it. Obama's campaign has been doing a far, far better job reaching young people.
- Gutterpunk, on 10/30/2008, -0/+27That would be a smear campaign made of lies ;)
- inactive, on 10/30/2008, -3/+30That's actually an amazing deal for the amount of advertising he's getting from it.
- Tyrghast, on 10/30/2008, -4/+31In McCain's defense, he doesn't know what video games are.
- StuartGibson, on 06/14/2009, -1/+26Bingo. It probably had less to do with advertising to the young, gamer crowd, as it did to generating column inches that put forth Obama as a progressive, in touch candidate.
- tdogg241, on 10/30/2008, -0/+24A++++++ great comment, would read again!!!!!!
- twiztidsinz, on 10/30/2008, -0/+21Either way... $44.5 grand doesn't seem all that much for advertising.
- marv0, on 10/30/2008, -1/+19LOL
- inactive, on 10/30/2008, -7/+24That's like $100,000 less than Palins wardrobe. Good marketing if you ask me. Plus it looks as if the 45k is all online adverts? correct me if I'm wrong.
- sullivanst, on 10/30/2008, -0/+16I dunno... as you point out, the gamer crowd is young.
Young voters are Obama's base.
The ads aren't messaging ads, they're get-out-the-vote ads, as you can see in the image: "Early voting has begun".
It's a very cheap way of reaching large numbers of voters who are likely to be Obama supporters and telling them to go vote. - ironhide, on 10/30/2008, -3/+17McCain's base wouldn't know what a video game is.
- JDoorjam, on 10/30/2008, -4/+18They didn't just not think of it -- they were approached with the idea and turned it down. Innovation came and knocked on McCain's door, and McCain told them to get off his lawn.
- rald84, on 10/30/2008, -1/+14thats what the doe said.
- JDoorjam, on 10/30/2008, -1/+13The recipe for this comment, in case you want to make a batch at home:
In a large bowl, add 5-6 short sentences (it's ok if they trail off or are totally incomplete). Mix in three parts anger, one rhetorical question (whole), one unnecessary insult, and a dash of self-righteousness. Add censored profanity, to taste. Let cool to between -12 and -25 diggs. Serve.
For a spicier comment, add that Obama is a Muslim, that his birth certificate is a fake, or that his middle name is Hussein. Comment will cool significantly faster. - JDoorjam, on 10/30/2008, -1/+12Are you talking about those 4,000 kids who were bussed in to a McCain rally to plump up his audience? The one where he asked Joe the Plumber to stand up and it turned out he wasn't there?
That was more hilarious than evil. - sullivanst, on 10/30/2008, -2/+13That might be why the message was so apolitical.
- Davoucci13, on 10/31/2008, -1/+11This is nothing compared to what Sarah Palin spent on her wardrobe in the last two months!
- SpectralSounds, on 10/30/2008, -4/+145urr3al5am has just proven my point.
The people who have had their head buried in the sand for the last couple of decades, are the ones who are voting for McCain. - JDoorjam, on 10/30/2008, -0/+10Because it's with a company that specializes in in-game content, it's a pretty safe bet that the money only went to video games.
- diggduggDOOM, on 10/30/2008, -4/+14Average age of gamers is late 20's.
- blahtastic, on 10/30/2008, -0/+10Also Obama bought that half hour infomercial during primetime, that had to cost a ton.
Though i still feel like I'm seeing way more McCain ads. - mywhitenoise, on 10/30/2008, -0/+10probably Obama since he raised more.
- LegomanArt, on 10/30/2008, -2/+12My god you're dumb.
- charm803, on 10/30/2008, -1/+10The company offered them the same deal. McCain turned it down.
McCain can't use the excuse that he didn't think of it. He's just not hip to it. - mywhitenoise, on 10/30/2008, -11/+20McCain did the same thing. I saw an ad when I was playing Jax, Marbles, and Ball in a Cup.
- sullivanst, on 10/30/2008, -0/+9Only 1/3 of a wardrobe, apparently.
- twiztidsinz, on 10/30/2008, -1/+10Anyone got a comparison on how much TOTAL the two have spent on advertising? Being broken down into the different areas is cool, but I'm more interested in the total.
Just curious to see who's spent more. - sullivanst, on 10/30/2008, -2/+10If you doubt for a second that McCain would have bought that time if he could've afforded it, you're even dimmer than you seem.
- Gutterpunk, on 10/30/2008, -2/+10but Palin doesn't wear those clothes anymore. Didn't you hear, she wear pants from the salvation army and home made earrings these days! Just like the average American!
- marv0, on 10/30/2008, -5/+13Less than a third of Palins outfit spending.....and it actually worked for him. Well played Obama, well played.
People saying this is a waste can stfu. The demographic it reached towards is the hardest to get at, and this was a clever way of doing so. Maybe not the most effective, but it's not like hes going to post his picture in Maxim next to some half naked bia. - DVmaker, on 10/30/2008, -4/+11So. He's had over 600M to spend from donors.
- Tyrghast, on 10/30/2008, -2/+9I'd be pretty proud of myself too if I had come from nothing to almost president.
- thenorwegian, on 10/30/2008, -6/+12This shouldn't be controversial at all. It's a brilliant move. McCain's campaign should be mad that they didn't think of it.
- CoreyHalliwell, on 10/30/2008, -4/+10In a related story, Mcain has taken a similar route, advertising his campaign on chuckwagons throughout the United States.
- inactive, on 10/30/2008, -3/+9Rofl "5urr3al5am" you ***** moron.
- Rhendal, on 10/30/2008, -1/+6And old people are stubborn and closed minded?
- HigherLogic, on 10/30/2008, -8/+13RP would still make a better president than McCain or Obama ;)
- Dalhectar, on 10/30/2008, -3/+8McCain can't go to a small town and invite kids to see him without Diggers getting up in arms.
A smart move for Obama, given his demographic avantage with younger voters, but nothing McCain does here is right. Granted a lot of what he does or says is wrong, but even when he does something not evil he's not given credit for it. - pjsk8, on 10/31/2008, -1/+6.......wow. That was the most irrelevant post I've read yet.
And this is Digg for crying out loud!
Hmm, guess I shouldn't be surprised?
Either way, he may have 10x more (according to your expertise), but he only spent $44.5K on this, douche. - rdwinder, on 10/30/2008, -5/+10I think i saw McCain online ads in Barbies Wardrobe for PS3 - there was an option to have McCain buy you that D&G garment that costs too much to buy with virtual money - what a nice guy!
- scoottie, on 10/30/2008, -4/+9why doesnt he take that money and redistribute it to the middle class?
- marv0, on 10/30/2008, -2/+7He's just trying to get his ACTUAL message across, and it's hard to when you've got people spouting terrorist and marxist. He has the funding from millions of americans who want him in office, and he is using it to reach out to people who are being clouded by Faux Noise and the like. You being sick of seeing him during the campaigning means you are really going to hate having to see him on tv and all other media in the next four years. Better hide under a rock.
- griggs, on 10/30/2008, -2/+7this is a good investment
- airhead08, on 10/30/2008, -2/+7i totally saw an ad for Obama in NHL 09. i then proceeded to score a hat trick in support of his campaign!
