- furtwan1, on 10/12/2007, -12/+71I've recieved every update the first day they come out. I've never once experienced any problems with any updates.
This is my personal experience. - sp00nz, on 10/12/2007, -8/+41Same here. Infact this last update finally got 1080i to appear on my Pioneer plasma. I've been pretty happy with it.

Explain to me how Microsoft isn't acknowledging this? - skoles, on 10/12/2007, -3/+22Guys, you really gotta stop bitching about this. You can't expect a patch from MS to go flawlessly when they have millions of different hardware config-
Oh wait.... - beefwellington, on 10/12/2007, -4/+20A lot of people (including me) got bricked with the November 3rd "Fall Update". A thread was made in the Xbox Support forum about the issue, and it eventually mysteriously moved to the "Wish List" forum. The thread has over 70,000 views with no reply from a forum support rep.

Even after all the PR babble about "promising to help those affected", they're saying it's a "coincidence" that the console broke immediately after the update (and I mean immediately, directly after the reboot) and are asking $140 plus shipping to repair it. I've since filed a complaint with the BBB, it's been about two weeks with no reply from Microsoft. Supposedly a class-action suit has been filed too. - totorototoro, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15MS really needs to go with a 1 year warranty for the 360.
- gleam, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14My 360 started freezing within a couple minutes of starting any game 4 days ago. I called Microsoft on Friday night and they said "yep, it sounds like it needs to be fixed. send it to us, with $130, and we'll fix it and give you another 90 day warranty!"
I said no thanks, brought it back to costco on Saturday (where the guy processing the return was already on his third 360) and got a brand new one. I even swapped my hard drive for the old one on my way out.
I'm still pissed at Microsoft for their handling of it, and for the unbelievably lame 90 day warranty. My 360 wasn't even a launch unit.. it was from 5/06. - klawz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Costco RULES for this type of experience - and the ability to get a refund, no questions asked.

The same thing happened LAST update too... as posted on Digg Nov 3rd:
http://www.digg.com/gaming_news/Microsoft_Correcting_Live_Update_That_Bricked_360_Consoles - knodi, on 10/12/2007, -5/+13My Xbox 360 is fine after the update.
- rebrad, on 10/12/2007, -8/+16I've never had a problem. If I remember the people that had the problem on the last update had attempted some type of modification.
- xenovis, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10I had all of my Gears of War data corrupted on my HD after the update. After beating Casual, Hardcore, and Insane, I was 3 Cog tags away from having all 30. After the update no game data was found and I couldn't continue my game.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11I know several people with modded firmware who have no issues after updating.
- WhiskerTheMad, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11"Its manufacturing errors. Get over it."
Updates bricking a system cannot be classified as "manufacturing errors," *****.
"THE WII WILL HAVE JUST AS MANY PROBLEMS AS THE REST OF THE CONSOLES!"
"Rest of the consoles?" I don't recall hearing any reports of Sony bricking PS3's with remote updates. Or a gamecube, or PS2. Or really any other console, ever. - jlboyd132321, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I'm adding this comment for my brother who's xbox 360 locks up on every game he has played since the fall update. I've never posted on digg before (great site btw), but I've been following this issue for a while now, and I needed to publicly vent about for my brother's sake and other embittered xbox 360 owners.
I understand updates and patches can have issues, but this doesn’t excuse the shady and terrible customer service for the 360. Examples being:
1) They tell my brother the same thing every time he calls, about unhooking everything, plugging the cords back in, blah, blah, blah, remove the hard drive, etc. despite his call history.
2) They have repeatedly lied (or have been terribly inept at their job) to him when he has called, saying that they didn't send his pre-paid box because they lost his information.
3) They stated that he probably wouldn’t get his same system back, but would probably get a refurbished one and that “this is just how it is.”
4) Most annoyingly, every time he has called, he has brought to their attention the Xbox official forums where people have posted the exact same symptoms after the update and they refuse to acknowledge these posts.
In general, the Xbox forum support is the worst I have ever seen (I have been reading the posts for my brother who doesn't contribute to online forums):
1) Just about every post by a moderator states, "call technical support" instead of actually trying to diagnose and fix the problem on the forum.
2) Not a single moderator has acknowledged the following thread, now with 1,777 posts and 78,249 views - http://forums.xbox.com/7864073/ShowPost.aspx
3) They moved the above post from technical issues to the wish list section of the forums and any other post regarding the fall update ruining their system has also been moved to the wish list. Why are these not considered technical issues? - gleam, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8I was until four days ago!
Good luck :) I'm still very happy with my 360, but now I'm even happier that I bought it at Costco. - WhiskerTheMad, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10"I think a lot of those issues are from people modding their consoles with the dvd f/w hacks."
...and you're basing this on... a complete guess, am I right?
"...of course they're gonna say they didn't and want it replaced or fixed for free when it stops working"
Well, yes, they're going to say they didn't mod it if they didn't mod it. Let's see, what's more likely:
1) MS, a company who for decades has produced shoddy, insecure, bloated, expensive software and patches that break things badly, releases a patch which breaks things badly, or:
2) Some random internet cockjuggler discovers the Evil Consumers' Secret: MODDING!
Yes, it's all the consumer's fault, undoubtedly. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9How to fix your bricked xbox, step 1, go to bestbuy, buy a new 360, setup 2, put your bricked one back in the box, step 3 return it to best buy, and get a refund. Total cost to you, 0$
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Gee Page 1 of 60 (1,778 items) all those people unanswered on a dam Xbox 360 legit
Microsfot Xbox forum ! That is gorss negligence on the part of MS for ignoring these claims and not fixing or coming up with reasoning as to why people have to pay more money for MS ***** ups ! ! - pdotnet, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I had a 1st batch, Sep '05 manufacture date. It was running just great, NO overheating, no issues at all, all updates applied.
When I applied the November 3rd update, all of my games started freezing after < 1 min.
I have no doubt that these updates worked perfectly for most people, but for those who are having issues it's not right that MS want to charge $140 to repair issues that started happening immediately after downloading their update.
I must say, I was pleased with the speed of service, I got my replacement unit in less than a week. - jonnyeh, on 10/12/2007, -5/+10What are you doing wrong? I've had an xbox 360 from launch, and it's never been bricked from an update. (albeit, I did have to replace it for overheating problems 4 months after I bought it, but that's a seperate issue).
Don't turn your system off until the update is applied. - Whoeverxxx, on 10/12/2007, -8/+12I'm on my 3rd 360 to date. I've heard the newer models made after June are a little more reliable than the previous but I'll have to wait and see with my latest one. I hope they don't change the case style any time soon so we can continue to exchange the fringy things everytime they breaks down.
- gcraick, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7How come it seems those that get one bricked console seem to get 2-3 borked ones after that? whereas the majority seem to have no problem with their original unit ...seems odd to me.
- NobleArc, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6hm. I just bought my 360 today, the Pro Holiday Bundle, and Gears of War, CoD3, etc.
I use the VGA adapter since my LCD monitor has the highest resolution of anything in my house. Anyway,
Before I did anything, I signed up for Xbox Live Gold, got the update, and my console has been working just fine. It even displays 19something by 10something as an available resolution. Higher than my monitor can handle, mind you.
Anyway, just saying that I haven't had any problem what-so-ever.
I would've died if I bought a 360, and bricked it right after turning it on... @_@;; - BlackKnight6, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Do you have a digital or analog sound system? Some DVD movies output 5.1 only on a digital system and 2.1 on analog. I have this issue with Star Trek: First Contact (or maybe it was Insurrection, can't remember), though on the movie there was 5.1 digital and 5.1 analog luckily (I have analog). This may or may not be the issue. I am just telling my similar issue.
- Zeos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Everything's been fine here, save for the E-74 error that I get every so often when starting the unit......Pretty much been there from day 1 - Rebooting typically makes it go away ....MS's 'solution' .....you guessed it, when it happens, reboot it and be happy.
- StevoCJ, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6What are you talking about? Microsoft are continuing to innovate with new and improved defects all the time. Their competitors appear to be struggling to keep up in this field.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3My launch Xbox 360 started freezing too so I returned it to Microsoft. They paid for shipping and all the repairs - all included in my standard 1 year warranty.
Now it's over a year old so I hope it doesn't happen again. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -12/+15Well I also like how the people complaining about their 360's breaking probably don't even have one /Sony Fanboys
Just for the record, had mine since launch. Hasn't skipped a beat. - kelbear, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I was among the victims. I thought I was bricked by the original nov. 3rd problem, except mine looked slightly different...but I saw that the nov. 3rd problem was supposedly fixed, and I saw no other reports of my problems so I assumed mine had failed due ot the nov. 3rd update not being properly fixed for my xbox purchased on black friday.
Now I see that they just bricked a new set with a new patch on the 30th instead.
The tech support took forever since they were "experiencing an unusually high load" of calls. Now that I see this on Digg, I can see that I wasn't alone in this one. Thank god for walmart's return policy. They just took it back for a full refund. I then bought another at EB/Gamestop that comes with a 1 year warranty and store-repair.
Just for comparison, my Dell monitor had a flaw in the multimedia mode. So this is how DELL deals with its mistakes. They immediately shipped me a brand new monitor by air. Inside is a partially filled out air-bill. I use the new monitor, and put the old monitor in that box. I fill out the rest of the air-bill, and call a phone number. I then put the box outside and their shipping company comes to your doorstep to pick up the broken monitor and dell pays the airfare to get their broken monitor back. Dell only bills you if you get the new monitor and you don't send the broken one back. Otherwise there's no charge for their mistake.
Microsoft on the other hand...well, their process is famous by now. - bunk3rk1ng, on 10/12/2007, -6/+9After reading about the first 50 or so posts most people have applied the update just fine and I haven't seen anything about a bricked console. Some people had a problem with their TV's not displaying 1080P so the screen was black but thats about it. Burried
- u16085, on 10/12/2007, -10/+13Kill my box.... console = dead... and they want $149 cuz they broke it?
- vawksel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It's more like this:
1) Go to Bestbuy and buy a new 360.
2) Put your bricked 360 in the new box you just bought
3) Take it back to best buy to return it
4) Have a dumb-ass stupid look on your face when they tell you "The serial number on the 360 doesn't match the serial number on the receipt"
5) Try to tell them this is what you bought, kicking and screaming like a little girl until they see all the dirt and cum stains on your 360 cuz you didn't clean it.
6) Go home doing the walk of shame
7) Best Buy employees laugh and mock you with their fellow blue-shirted khaki panted freaks.
I swear to god this didn't happen to me! :P
- chadlewis76, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3This update killed the video on mine. I bought mine back in Jaunuary of this year, so I figured I was just S.O.L.. When I mentioned that the video crapped out immediately after the update though, he said that there would be no charge to me.
I think what happened is that MS didn't realize it was the fault of the update at first, and so people were just getting the standard repair line. Once they realized what was going on, people who called later like I did got the free repair.
So my advice, if you're having this problem, is to make sure to let them know that it was the update that killed your 360. - P5ycHo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4WTF?
No-one blaming Sony? Wake up diggers !!! You're letting me down here. - EscapeArt1st, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4My Xbox 360 bricked after this update.
I took it back to the store I brought it. I had that 360 since launch... so that was 364 days here in the UK. Good thing I found the recipt, and the 12 month warrenty we get in the UK as standard.
I has no idea it was this update that did it though, I figured it was just it's time. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Thats fine but did microsfot except responibilty ? NO they offer up more payment to them with no advice or reasoning as to why this took place almost as if they are placing the blame on the consumer and them washing their hands of it.!
MS is crooked as a bent hockey blade ! - pdotnet, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2That's good news chadlewis76.
If anyone has already paid for their repairs, might be worth calling back and requesting a refund as it sounds like the news has trickled down to the call centers now! - Marthinus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Bah, all corporates are evil, case in point.
- homerjs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Not just the update that's bricking consoles, my console bricked because of poor manufacturing, microfractures occuring in ram connections after repeated use, heating up and cooling down from playing causing micro fractures..I am so disappointed in M$, selling a console that has huge problems and charging people to have it fixed, shame on you Bill , I wonder what the failure rate is on the 360, I'd bet over 50% easy
- slasherx, on 10/12/2007, -8/+10I've had so many bricked consoles from updates it scares me everytime there is one.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+6Brillent professer but that doesn't fix the issue that the product is garbage and it doesn't stop the onslaught of brick console or getting answer why they are becoming bricks !
Also i value you my time and money running around withut getting answers as to why is not my idea of an adventure ! When i put that much money and faith into a product i would expect it to work like they say it will ! Not come at me with 90 day warrentys and paying extra 150 dollars for something that is or was not my fault ! - BlackKnight6, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Don't forget that MS also update the 360 to also detect modded xboxes so as to prevent cheaters and such online. I have a 360 from launch and have no issues, so I guess I am lucky.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5@ sp00nz:
"In fact" are TWO WORDS. - Shocky, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@gcraick
That's because it's common practice to replace a bad piece of hardware with a refurbished one. Happens all the time in other industries too (I know for a fact that happens with cell phones). - nrighton, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Had my box for a year with a 11/26/05 manufacture date. It ran fine, no problems ( a couple glitch freezes here and there but no big deal, it is a computer ). I ran the update, played the Rainbow Six single player demo and presto freeze and 3 red rings of death. I then called MS and was given the run around. I hung up on the guy and returned the console for a replacement at Costco. Good news, the system was on sale and l got a $25 dollar credit back, the bad news, I lost hundreds of hours of saved games. I will miss my Oblivion character.
- ZenMojo, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6Why would someone dig xenovis down? Is there an active Microsoft fan-action to hide the truth?
- edrift101, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Microsoft needs to STOP putting out firmware updates and they should be held accountable for every machine that they bricked.
- joper90, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2aye.. mine from the release date.. and had the dvd firmware 'modified' with the 1st gen hack.. and works fine.. all the patches have been fine too.
Must be luck i guess :)
/even thou i am waiting for the day when it goes pop.. i panic each time it updates. and its not case the dvd firmware, its cause of m$ testing processes are obviouly crap. - StevoCJ, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Microsoft didn't make all that money by accepting their mistakes.
