- smashblu, on 05/26/2009, -1/+18Since every FF game is set in a different universe, couldn't they just name every one something different? In 20 years are we seriously going to have Final Fantasy XXXIV? If they had changed the name every time, we'd only have 2 direct sequels FF X-2 and FF VII. That would be much less ridiculous.
- Elranzer, on 05/26/2009, -10/+26Lara Croft: Advent Children?
Square Enix is much worse than Nintendo when it comes to milking franchises. Most of Nintendo's "milked" spin-offs tend to still be good games. - Antimatter3009, on 05/27/2009, -1/+16Exactly. Saying that Square Enix milks their properties dry is entirely wrong IMO. Milking a property is like EA with their sports game. The release a new one every year with very few changes. Square Enix uses the same name, but they make entirely different games. They change the battle system every time and, with few exceptions, the stories are completely different. I don't really count that as milking.
- Divic, on 05/27/2009, -2/+16Oh wait, you mean that same Final Fantasy series that has a game that is frequently voted Best Game Ever (FF 7) and each new one sells a ton of? Yeah, horrible idea to milk the idea (NOTE: I hate FF games. Too slow for me, but just saying. Its a damn good idea if it sells)
- chaosblade77, on 05/26/2009, -1/+15Crisis Core is also a prequel, and even though it's a movie Advent Children is considered a sequel. FFVII is practically a franchise of it's own.
- skifreak107, on 05/26/2009, -0/+13What is FFVII a sequel to?
- Jarasmen, on 05/27/2009, -0/+11Bring back Legacy of Kain you pricks!
- Renian, on 05/27/2009, -1/+11I believe Square Enix stated they really like the Thief franchise, so that's probably the one that's going to get milked.
EDIT: Yeah...http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thief_(series)#Thief_ ...
The logo is lame though for anyone who can speak 1337. - ByteGuerilla, on 05/27/2009, -0/+9So called because it was Squaresoft's last gamble to save the company. It turned out to be a massive success.
- rdaryl, on 05/26/2009, -0/+9Tomb Raider RPG confirmed!
- NorrisOBE, on 05/27/2009, -0/+8Nah, they're going to make Hitman 5 featuring Chocobos.
- bubbameister33, on 05/27/2009, -1/+9That's no different than Eidos.
- felman87, on 05/27/2009, -1/+9They could at least give us a FF6 remake, or at least a remake people are asking for.
- yocouchdigga, on 05/27/2009, -0/+7http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ivalice
***** love Tactics.
The PSP port is glorious. - ShyGuy91284, on 05/27/2009, -1/+7The traditional medieval game market is over saturated. It was unique worlds that made VI, VII, and VIII so different that drew me to the series.
- allisonaxe, on 05/27/2009, -1/+7square enix loves making remakes. I would love a remake of Deus ex with improved graphics. I want this to happen.
- baldmage, on 05/27/2009, -0/+6Um...what exactly are they milking? Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest comes out pretty much every three to four years, which is a really long time for such a huge selling franchise. Each one is a lot different from the next (not so much in the case of Dragon Quest, but those fans are so specific and complacent that they could not make much changes anyways), and they almost always good. They also have original IPs like the World Ends with You. I don't see the milking here... Remaking old games and making spinoffs aren''t milking, since the fans themselves have been begging for those things for years.
- Sabretou, on 05/27/2009, -1/+7I accidentally most of their games.
- ToastPop, on 05/27/2009, -0/+6Funny thing is, pretty much everyone loves each Final Fantasy game, and people are wetting their pants for the upcoming Final Fantasy 13. Why would Square Enix stop doing it? This is the only time I've ever read people complaining about this, I think people are just going hive mind on this issue.
- Jeepy, on 05/27/2009, -0/+6Considering 9 of the 12 FF games have all been stellar I think saying they make too many of them is a little unwarranted. If say the last game or two in the series was terrible you could say oh well the well's gone dry but I think FF12 was a really solid game overall. I'm not going to start complaining about companies "milking" their franchise while they're making good games. I don't see anyone complaining that blizzard is making Diablo 3 or Starcraft 2.
Square makes above average games on a whole (Last Remnant was really good) so if you want to attack a company for bleeding an IP I say EA is a good candidate for pumping out turds like Sims and Need for Speed every month then raping IPs like Red Alert and Bond. I'll take "unoriginal" quality games over half-assed "unique" games like Too Human.
PS: Resident Evil 5 - smashblu, on 05/26/2009, -0/+5Sorry I meant Dirge of Cerberus.
- NathanielJ, on 05/27/2009, -0/+5Well, considering they're almost all completely different, they're not particularly hard to keep track of.
- emjaymj, on 05/27/2009, -1/+6Did you actually play the Assassin's Creed?? Because there was a lot of hype, and the previews looked great, but I don't know a single person who actually thought it lived up to it. Thief has always been a good series, already more "kickass" than Assassin's Creed. Hell, Metacritic even puts EVERY SINGLE Thief game as better rated than Assassin's Creed.
- Kyrgizion, on 05/27/2009, -0/+5My thoughts exactly. Eidos has been churning out Lara games almost as long as Enix has been milking FF. Pot kettle black, anyone?
- RoboDonut, on 05/27/2009, -0/+5Thank you Link, but your Master Sword is in another castle.
- Ramzy, on 05/27/2009, -0/+5Please don't ***** up the next Hitman game :(
- nullvector, on 05/27/2009, -0/+4I'm ready for Lara Croft Chicobo Rally.
- esoxLucius4, on 05/27/2009, -0/+4Agreed.
As I am playing Deus Ex for the Nth time thinking how it would be nice if they would release 10th Anniversary Edition with better graphics. - SEANWOOKIE, on 05/27/2009, -0/+4The whole game?
- CrimsonFlash, on 05/27/2009, -0/+4If only they would milk Chrono Trigger... *sigh*
- reyoo30309, on 05/27/2009, -0/+4Most of Nintendo's games are the same game with graphical upgrades.
I started playing Zelda in the mid 90's and years later I am still searching for that same Master Sword. - SniperSlap, on 05/27/2009, -0/+4Square sucks now. Move on.
- Slayerdude51982, on 05/27/2009, -1/+5hey if it's good Tomb Raider games then I'm game.
- RoboDonut, on 05/27/2009, -0/+4Actually, Eidos is probably worse.
The Tomb Raider games are all direct sequels, and the only reason anybody ever played them in the first place was because she had breasts and firearms. Nobody cares about that anymore because the market is now flooded with it.
At least each Final Fantasy game can be appreciated as an individual work with a unique story. - liamfriel, on 05/27/2009, -0/+4AMEN BRUDDA
- danwallace, on 05/27/2009, -1/+4Oh god, please don't.
- lichmicro, on 05/27/2009, -1/+4not to mention its FINAL fantasy
- Xaevier, on 05/26/2009, -0/+3Technically speaking FF12 is in the same universe as Final fantasy tactics advance 2, which was in the same universe as final fantasy tactics advance 1. And I think that final fantasy tactics for playstation was in that universe as well?
Overall anything that has the bunny eared women seems to happen on the same timeline etc, just in different parts of the world. - CardHockman, on 05/27/2009, -3/+6Still, they made Kingdom Hearts and The World Ends With You. Come on.
- inactive, on 05/27/2009, -0/+3"Its a damn good idea if it sells"
I thought with the way the economy turned to mud last year this way of thinking would be gone. - Mship, on 05/27/2009, -0/+3you know you are a retard and you know nothing about FF if you think they all have the same combat system. They all have something similar because it is an rpg. Why dont you go play HL, or halo, or and other FPS be
- overridemymind, on 05/27/2009, -0/+3As it should be, chaosblade -- as it should be. In fact, I'm re-playing it (after 10 years, mind you) on my PSP right now. I'm still holding out for a FFVII remake for PS3 (keep everything as it was, Square -- just update the graphics and replace some of the little message boxes with voiceovers, maybe.) although I doubt it'll ever happen.
- hljboss, on 05/27/2009, -1/+4Wow. A company buys a valuable property and they plan to actually use it to generate revenue. As much revenue as possible. And then some lame web site suggests this is a bad thing. I can just about guarantee the writer of the article has never owned stock before, or run a business of his own.
- CardHockman, on 05/27/2009, -0/+2There was that Valkyrie Profile game on the DS, too. If you don't have a DS or PSP, don't expect good RPGs.
- Ryan0617, on 05/27/2009, -1/+3I dont know why everyone is complaining. Going on about how they milk final fantasy etc. Final Fantasy is a completely different game everytime except for how the story plays out, 'Bad guys try to take over the world, good guy stops them, inbetween he falls in love with someone' etc. They are all good games (Minus FF-X2 if you're being specfic). Nintendo comes to mind when you're talking milking. How many Mario games are they? Far more and aload are quite crap as well.
- chaosblade77, on 05/27/2009, -0/+2I can think of much better reasons to boycott a company than over the company in question choosing to protect their copyrighted IPs.
They kind of came across as ***** with CE since it was almost done, but they've C&D'd just about every Chrono fan project ever. To expect to get out one is pretty much a pipe dream. - NathanielJ, on 05/27/2009, -0/+2Doesn't the exact same logic apply to Mario? Honestly, they've done ONE Mario game per console (read: every 4 or 5 years) for the last 3 consoles. That's milking it? And I dare say that Mario Galaxy broke the platforming game mold much more than any recent Final Fantasy game has (FF12 did reasonably well at being different, though), and Mario 64 was unlike anything else that existed at the time of its release.
You can complain about Smash Bros and Mario Kart I guess if you want, but then again, those are completely different games, so that doesn't seem to work either. - NikoKun, on 05/27/2009, -3/+5Square lost a lot of what used to make them a good company, back when they merged with Enix. (Course there was already downhill signs before then.)
All they can do now is repeat the same formulas over and over, using up the same franchises with ridiculous sequel numberings.. and cling to their properties with irons fists, even against the fans.
Been boycotting them for over 5 years now... Even though they made some of my favorite childhood games... That Square is dead, and what's left, doesn't deserve our money. (Especially after what they've done, repeatedly, to CT fans.) - inactive, on 05/27/2009, -2/+4Thief is dead. Long live Thief.
Deus Ex is dead. Long live Deus Ex. - Cubine, on 05/27/2009, -0/+2when in the hell did that happen?
