- KSUdesigner, on 10/12/2007, -6/+179I wish I could remember when $250 went from being expensive to being cheap. I guess it's all relative.
- Cglass, on 10/12/2007, -18/+156I tried the Wii and it cured my cancer!
- devindotcom, on 10/12/2007, -11/+107Easy to see why - at $250 it falls under "gadget" territory really, so non-gamers don't feel like they're buying into a whole lifestyle. It's easy, it's cheap, and it's fun - and that's the entire point, right?
- sacherjj, on 10/12/2007, -4/+99Ummm.... The new Star Wars didn't even work in color.
- DatoeDakari, on 10/12/2007, -5/+101@ chris9902
Whats wrong with B&W films? It's not like you're unable to watch them, and some of them are better than anything made these days. - Harabeck, on 10/12/2007, -12/+106That and you can use it as a dry erase board.
- awldun, on 10/12/2007, -7/+83Sin City was mostly a black and white (w/ red and yellow) graphic novel/movie.
- shmatt, on 10/12/2007, -6/+71Actually, it is all about the gameplay.
Wow, HD? Didn't realize I needed a brand new expensive TV and a $500 console to enjoy video games. What a joke - tokkio, on 10/12/2007, -4/+69sorry to burst your bubble chris9902,
but they still do make black and white films.
as people still do take black and white photos. - paulmdx, on 10/12/2007, -3/+52/me looks at my Xbox 360 owning colleague suspiciously....
- mikesherov, on 10/12/2007, -2/+49"Do you think Star wars or LOTR would've worked in B&W... no, of course not."
@Chris: You just proved yourself wrong. Star Wars IV, V, VI were infinitely better than I, II, III. Better graphics does not a better movie make. In fact, just having better graphics is a crutch game developers have been using for ages, and it is getting tiresome. I don't care if the cloth on the clothes of my NBA players now uses it's own physics engine... I just want a better game. - scratched, on 10/12/2007, -15/+58Translation: Wii is for the child, PS3 is for the player
I'd say that the exact opposite is true though, IMHO... - Murdats, on 10/12/2007, -2/+45@23r17i05o42n
seriously, every wii story you go on about unresponsivness and lack of druability, did nintendo kill your parents or somethign?
have you played it, I doubt it, I know several people who have and they say it works really well, the wiimote is very reliable and doesnt, as you seem to imply, crumble within weeks (years maybe but noone will know that for another few years, so when they do start crumbling, feel free to bitch like the whiny bitch you are)
do you read digg just to troll, if so, please, for the sake of all of us here, go and get a ***** life, or at least go play some games - whiteguysamurai, on 10/12/2007, -7/+49And the xbox 360 is for big hairy dudes who are totally plowing your girlfriend.
- paulmdx, on 10/12/2007, -10/+50"the amount of people who bought into the "you don't need HD" crap"
I completely agree. Not just for games, but in general. B&W films to colour added some really big. VHS to DVD added something really big (random access, menus, etc). For me, DVD is adequate in terms of quality. All HD adds on top of DVD is that extra bit of clarity, which to be honest, really doesn't make much difference to me. - yournamehere, on 10/12/2007, -2/+32no one cares about your site. if it was that good you wouldn't need to plug it.
- Shorties, on 10/12/2007, -4/+33Everyone was worried about the Wii controller being a gimmick but in truth it's HD gaming that is the gimmick. I have an Xbox 360 and an HD-TV, not in the same room though, usually when I get a new amazing game (GOW) I bring the 360 to the living room to play on the HD, after a few hours I get over the novelty of having amazing graphics and I take it to my room to actually play the game. It really is the game play that matters, look at games like Guitar Hero the graphics on that game are horrible yet the game is amazing. In my room I have two TVs a nice big 27 inch SD TV that I play all my movies and games on, and a small older 13 inch TV dedicated to (my still working) NES which I play just as much as my other consoles. (I still love SMB) My 360 even is mostly used for Arcade games and those are no where near amazing looking, I mean come on is an HD TV going to make frogger or pac man any greater. Yes HD is pretty, yes its fun to look at but after a while you get over the novelty and it comes down to game play.
- zengonzo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+28 You don't need anything. It's all preference.
Some movies are still made in black and white - and stylized cartoons are at times better than ultra-real renderings.
I'm pretty sure that most of us aren't so mentally crippled as to be UNABLE to play something that doesn't feature state-of-the-art everything. It's nice to have options. - whiteguysamurai, on 10/12/2007, -13/+33Is it just me, or are we all going a tad overboard on the Wii.
Whenever i hear about it, i like it less and less. - BadassCheese, on 10/12/2007, -3/+23How did you block and relpy to him
- UGM2099, on 10/12/2007, -3/+22I'm a non-gamer and I pre-ordered the Wii.
- ho0ber, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18I suppose that is true in that lots of non-gamers play The Sims... but being a gamer, I really hope the Wii isn't as boring as The Sims. :)
- ZenMojo, on 10/12/2007, -6/+19What's wrong with that title? It's 100% accurate. It's not like he's talking about all non-gamers.
Non-gamers kill their kids. Non-gamers support Hitler. Non-gamers may even molest baby goats. Seriously, what's the problem? - jenoosia, on 10/12/2007, -6/+18In other words, the Wii to consoles is what The Sims is to PC games.
- thcobbs, on 10/12/2007, -16/+27exactly..
This might also be a sign of the return of Nintendo to a more ubiquitous nature.
Go Nintendo! I can't wait to see what Mario and gang are gonna do on the new platform. - SourWorm, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12.... lol, where the hell did that come from
- o0joshua0o, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12"When gamers got into the real world and started making real money and not buying a gensis on their allowance. I have a lot of expendable income, and I send more on a weekend at the bars in Chicago than I would to buy a Wii. So the Wii falls under the "casual purchase" category."
Yes, but when you get into the REAL real world and start making REAL real money, and you have mortgage payments, a family to support, a 401K to invest in, college savings accounts to invest in, etc., $250 once again becomes a lot of money. Not a lot of money in itself, but a lot of money to selfishly spend on a device for your own entertainment. - Murdats, on 10/12/2007, -4/+13does driving a car make you a driver?
ywa in the same sense as you have people who drive to the shops for milk occasionally, and people who race and tweak and drive all the time - mjparker75, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10I stopped bitching about not having HD the day I realized all I had to do was put on my glasses. Viola! Instant improvement. Sure 1080 would be nice, but 480 isn't exactly hideous.
- Noffie, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Yah, he's just trying to reduce demand for the Wii and ensure that he gets one for himself. :-P
- djSyndrome, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8"4 checks for me to pick up 4 Wii units at the Toys ‘R’ Us launch party this Saturday night."
He'd better bring along three friends, because TRU isn't going to sell him four systems - especially on launch day. - thelimopit, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11The new Soderbergh/Clooney flick, The Good German, is shot entirely in black and white, but also has a ton of special effects in it:

When gamers got into the real world and started making real money and not buying a gensis on their allowance. I have a lot of expendable income, and I send more on a weekend at the bars in Chicago than I would to buy a Wii. So the Wii falls under the "casual purchase" category. - Nougat, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9Wiiii! My NUTS!
- zizzybaloobah, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8As many have said, it *is* about the game play. Games like Wolfenstein and Tetris were wildly popular in spite of the fact that they had simple and/or sub-par graphics. Similarly many of the classic Atari 2600 games (like Pitfall! for example) are still popular as pop culture references and as any number of reincarnations in retail outlets.
Many people aren't into gaming (and I'm one of them), and it's never been because the graphics aren't good enough -- it's because the games and/or devices make it difficult to actually play the game, or require such a huge time investment (e.g. as in the South Park WOW episode) as to make casual play impossible. - PacoDG, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Pics / Video of the family playing @ http://gonintendo.com/?p=8446
- jessi74, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Why should we make names of items longer to satisfy your archaic spelling fetishes? :)
- Lobut, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Gah, okay, it's one thing to say PC gaming is superior (which I claim it's not, it's "different") but to say that it's better because you can pirate games is silly.
I mean to extrapolate, I could say: hey! I can steal some kids basketball and then play for hours on end! Cheaper than PC! Get more exercise! Sunlight! - Klarth, on 10/12/2007, -9/+13Note: Diggywiggit has been trolling every recent frontpaged Wii topic with similar responses. I blocked him; I advise others do the same.

"The targeted customers of Wii are kids who don't care much about graphics quality" - GamingTrend, on 10/12/2007, -5/+9Fair enough darryl242 - I personally have felt burned by Nintendo on the last two consoles. I got my hands on the console last week and put my impressions into our latest TrendCast at Gaming Trend.

I'm not a fanboy, but I AM sold on the Wii. - EvolvedAnt, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7If chicks don't digg your Wii, then perhaps it is better off that you don't leave the party with them...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Yeah, I agree. I'm a non-gamer. I haven't owned a single gaming console, and while I do play some computer games, they're very few and far between.
I'm totally psyched about the Wii. - ElectricGrandpa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4It can be spelt cheque and check... Both are acceptable.
- NikoKun, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5We've reached the days when graphics no longer play the deciding factor.
A system with graphics like the Wii, is capable of producing artistic games, just as much as PS3 or 360 can. Detail is not always art.
Thats not to say that Wii can't do detail... hell, Look at twilight princess, and thats just a gamecube game... tell me that isn't detailed and artistic.
And on another note, extreamly simplified graphics can be an art style of their own... just look at WindWaker... that game is beautiful. If all games could have that level of visual style, then we'd never need to upgrade graphics every again.
But anyway, this article isn't about graphics, its about how Non-gamers like Wii... Big surprise there, Nintendo made Wii to appeal to the non-gamers as well as the hardcore. thats the whole point... and they are good at it, as the DS has proven.
I know I'll be playing my Wii with my family, and they really dont game much... LOL - tate6566, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6"I wish I could remember when $250 went from being expensive to being cheap. I guess it's all relative."
Inflation my friend. 250 dollars today isn't worth as much as it was when the PS1 or N64 came out. The ps1 released for 299, but in todays dollars i would be around 379. - motang, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4He got on the same day as all the editors got it (i.e. GameSpot, IGN, Joystiq, etc.). Nintendo sent him a system.
- bloodylip, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Dead Rising can't be played well on an SDTV.
- PiratedTVPro, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7I plan on doing the same thing with my family over Thanksgiving. There will be people there ranging from 2 years old to 85 years young, and I plan on giving them all a go with the Wii controller. I'm the only person in my family who ever showed any interest in gaming, even though my father works for a company that's providing chips to both the PS3 and 360. It was word of mouth that began the DS's ascent up the handheld charts, and it looks like it might be the same thing that spreads the Wii's popularity.
Reggie said it, "Playing is believing." - b3mus3d, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I would kick you in the nuts for your wii :D
- zengonzo, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6
Well, chrises, I guess it all comes down to what one considers to be worthwhile.
With few exceptions, I've never been much for Blockbusters. -
