- BBX25, on 10/12/2007, -4/+30Can you say, "Time Zones" ?
- shalomjt, on 10/12/2007, -10/+24can you say april fools
- rpdillon, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15I know people are getting buried for saying this, but...April Fools. Check out the end of the article:
...Microsoft's own Peter Moore had this to say:
"While some people may criticize us for this, 1 year from now everybody will be thanking us for improving their gaming experience. The Xbox 360 hard drive will empower gamers to reach a higher plataeu, both in the gaming world, as well as in the real world. The future is nigh, and we are the ones to deliver it. While adoption may be slow, this minor crisis will not be the end of us. It is but one last hurdle before the Journey and salvation!"
Calls to his office about what he was possibly high on were not returned as of press time.
Yeah, right. =) - dmron, on 10/12/2007, -4/+16I cant believe how many people are saying this is bad... hello? The core edition was the worst idea of all time from MS, even worse than the freaking paperclip helper guy. Hasnt anyone noticed how even now, over 4 months after release, the core edition sits in stores unbought while the premium edition is sold out and has pre-orders up the wazoo? This is because the core edition is stupid and no one wants it! I mean you have spend at least $40 additional dollars anyways just to get a memory card, might as well spend 60 more than that and just get the freaking harddrive, along with wireless controller, headset, etc... It's a damn joke.
- spectre_25gt, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14You made it here from Cute Overload, didn't you?
- kolop1, on 10/12/2007, -4/+15 Anyone who would buy the core system is an idiot anyway. You would end up spending more money in the long run to upgrade it. I think this actually makes a lot of sense.
- ravuya, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11It's hard to talk to Peter Moore about what drugs he's on; I saw him eat a limo once while strung out on MCE.
- Lamb, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8Maybe if they linked to the claimed press release I'd believe it...
- imjustabill, on 10/12/2007, -5/+9I cant believe this many people be live this story. Have you looked at the calendar today?
- alevel27mage, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Don't they know that you can't make an April Fool's joke that includes the 360/PS3?
The whole internet is going to burn down from the flaming that will ensue... - topey, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6My friend bought the core system... and I'm laughing my ass off at him!
- diskopo, on 10/12/2007, -11/+15May help if he spelled "ridiculous" correctly.
- drakonite, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4The issue is the same thing I've said is wrong with the xbox360's optional hard drive from the beginning -- if the hard drive is optional than games can't rely on it being there, so they can't do anything special with the drive they couldn't do if it wasn't there. If the drive is optional, about the only thing you'll see is caching to speed up load times... no hard drive based gameplay (such as a game that lets you control time and have multiple copies of yourself doing things in a couple minute long streak... like the game I can't remember the title to did)
- scotty1024, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Really? I thought the number of bogus stories was a bit high today, but lets face it, every time you start reading a Digg story don't you find yourself wondering: is this an April fools day type of story? (e.g. 60% of Vista to be re-written...)
Between the photo phakers and what passes for journalists these days how many bad stories have we been seeing recently? Isn't every day starting to be a bit more like April Fool's day? - lightningrod220, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5I heard somewhere that Microsoft spends more money than Sony in advertising the XBox and 360 in Japan. If that's true, that would really suck to be them.
- sacfdup, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6it should have been this way from the beginning
- thehans, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5This has to be a fake. First of all the article says Microsoft is doing this to compete with Sony. As if Microsoft would admit that Sony has the better strategy. Also I don't think they could legally supporting the core system, that would be a bait and switch. Besides there are of lot of people who bought the core system because they couldn't get there hands on the extras package.
- NextGenXbox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2That's the worst fake PR I've ever seen.
- steve693, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4April Fools, just read what peter moore supposedly said:
"While some people may criticize us for this, 1 year from now everybody will be thanking us for improving their gaming experience. The Xbox 360 hard drive will empower gamers to reach a higher plataeu, both in the gaming world, as well as in the real world. The future is nigh, and we are the ones to deliver it. While adoption may be slow, this minor crisis will not be the end of us. It is but one last hurdle before the Journey and salvation!" - sixister, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I get it! The $ in M$ is indicative of the letter S!!! I clevar!
- Gatorade, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7DIGG SUCKS ON APRIL FOOLS DAY!
- xxsiriusxburnxx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Not that i really care that they are now more less enforcing the purchase, but more less charging $99 for a 20 gig external HD, which i bet is a standard 7200 rpm drive, which i would personally pay no more than $20 and thats pushing it, add $5-10 for an external case thats $25-30 1/4 what they are stealing from people, and they call pirates theifs hah, well im not buying one for some time sure i'll be tempted when the third halo comes out but price point is high enough, and i'll wait until a third party crack allows me to use a 20 gig external hd for $30 not by microsoft.
- merdiesel, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3What douche actually bought the Core version anyways?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Microsoft is doing everyone a favour.
That non-hd option was ridiculous. - scotty1024, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3If American consumers could Buy American the way Japanese consumers Buy Japanese, well the Japanese would have no economy left.
- ross., on 10/12/2007, -0/+1how is this so unbelievable?? most other countries have never sold the core system
- gabebear, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2A HD doesn't help with load times without some sort of installation for games to the HD. This isn't really feasible on the XBox1 or 360 because of their small HDs. I sure hope PS3 games allow you to install to the HD to speed up load times.
Caching static data(like textures) can provide for better effects, but really doesn't help much.
The only areas where a console hard drive has really shined so far is downloadable content(XBLive), being a giant memory card, and media playing(XBMC). - CapnCornflake, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1April Fools!
- rish, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2It isn't MS that is putting the bundles together. It's the resellers that do that.
- mcbesq, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Who the hell bought the Core system?
- richardiscool, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3It was Blinx.
- DragonChaser, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1haha he said wtfux
- ModernTenshi, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Even if this does end up happening somewhere down the road (c'mon, the Core system is a joke), all I have to say is this: thank God Revolution will let me use whatever friggin' HDD I want, meaning I can get one that has more storage than either of them for the same damn price.
- Ilyanep, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3If this is true (and I hope to god and all things holy it is true, keep reading to find out why) then they might drop the price on the premium. Seriously, who even wants the core? Practically the only thing you can do at all is just play the games. No live, no extras, no nothing.
But even if they did drop the price, $400 and $300 are still both too expensive for me :( cause if you think about it: $400 for the console, $50 for a live gold subscription, $50 for a game, $40 for a 2nd controller, and you've paid $540 just to have a usable console with one game and an extra controller so a friend can play.
~Waiting for $200 (maybe)
But then again it's probably fake - Solis, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Thank god.
The core system should have never existed. - Arkz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i agree, they never should have done the core,
they should have made the HDD mandatory for the machine to operate,
that way developers could create games that would need the HD to work, by buffering chunks of the levels that can then be read from the hd much faster than the DVD drive, then we could have really high detail areas that you could wizz past without it lookin crap cause the textures wernt loaded fast enough. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3What were you expecting? Them to keep up this 'core value' sharade for years?
Pfft.
The core pack was thrown together to confuse the market and act as a smoke shield for the premium pack which would have received much criticism for being a rip-off if it launched solo.
Now the ***** hits the fan and everyone realises to get the most out of the system you need to spend a ton. Sucks to be you.. don't expect these price jerks to stop, you're a Microsoft slave now. - gabebear, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Oops, I meant to reply to Quickstrike's comment directly below this one
- Ilyanep, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Well, first of all, if they're getting their ass kicked it's probably not a monopoly (right? right?)
Second of all, their main audience has and will always be the US no matter how much they spend outside the US. I'm sure $100 mil is a drop in the bucket. - dellop, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Anyone who wanted one right away and couldn't get a premium.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2http://www.xbox.com/en-US/hardware/catalog.aspx?st=&g=204000000&s=2&p=1&c=10&MSID=ba5924ba3ed94392bdc1c082625f6a4f
i didnt - lightningrod220, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I wouldn't put it past Microsoft to pull something like this, but since it is April Fools, I'll take this with a grain of salt.
- mliving, on 10/12/2007, -7/+7Explains why Microsoft is getting it's monopolistic ass kicked all over Japan in the video hardware sales department Selling less than 1% of the total hardware sold in Japan!
Here are the sales figures for the week of 3/20 to 3/26 (via JoyStiq):
1. DSL: 119,986
2. NDS: 39,307
3. PS2: 34,169
4. PSP: 31,077
5. GBASP: 5,627
6. GBM: 4,883
7. GCN: 1,458
8. 360: 1,415
9. XBX: 108
10. GBA: 98
Total sales by company:
1. Nintendo: 171,359 - 72%
2. Sony: 65,246 - 27.5%
3. Microsoft: 1,524 - 0.64% (Ouch!)
These numbers most just suck the life out of the Microsoft XBox 360 world-wide marketing plan which cost Microsoft a reported $100 million or 200,000 XBox 360s depending on your perspective.
Without the monopoly padded war chest this "war" would have ended long ago! - jferraro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Makes sense to me. I don't know why they released two bundles in the first place. It kind of reminded me when Nintendo said that users didn't want online play. If you figure its 40 dollars for a 64 meg memory card in the lifetime of the xbox you're going to spend more than the harddrive on those alone.
- Quickstrike, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I wish they did this. Hard drives help quite a bit for loading times and caching of larger textures.
- zwilliams, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I'll be waiting for Microsoft to stop the crappy bundle stuff before I buy an Xbox360.
Why should I pay $800 for a console I want, and 4 games I don't? - Topaz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If this is real than it is ridiculous. Those who tried to save money by buying a core are going to end up spending more in the long-run once Microsoft bullies game developers into making the hd a requirement.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3April Fools is a stupid holiday.
- Itaintrite, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Geez, this is an obvious April Fool's Joke. I mean, come ON, March 31st? Nice try. If this WERE true, it'd be all over gaming websites, and a quick google would yield a ton of results...which isn't the case.
Duh! - matt.rubin, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1they should have done thisa in the first place because they need to make alot more primiuem packages cause every store has core.... then MS needs to remember thayt they are not making the buying complicated for the children more like for the parents. Like i don't know about you but if my mom was trying to get me a 360 then they wouldn't know the difference between the core and the premium and it would just confuse them.... Which is why sony is only coming out with one type
