- theblooms, on 10/12/2007, -5/+36The Wavebird is one of the single best controllers ever made for any system, regardless of make or generation. I am ever so thankful that it (supposedly) works with my Wii. I'll find out for sure come Christmas morning!
It's going to suck having that thing in the closet for 5 weeks! I DID get it for my kids! (cough cough cough!) - MouseCircus, on 10/12/2007, -3/+32That's the point. It'd be pretty stupid if they made the GC controller work with some VC games, but not all. The VC controller is just there for people who don't have a GameCube. Personally, I'm saving myself some money and sticking with my GC controllers.
- Lionhart, on 10/12/2007, -0/+27Zelda Ocarina of time did. You needed the rumble pack to find hidden treasure.
- opnickc, on 10/12/2007, -1/+25"The VC controller is just there for people who don't have a GameCube."
I think I'd rather have the nicer d-pad for snes and genesis games.
But yeah, it's nice that I wouldn't need to buy the classic controller. - grumbel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+23Except of course that the Wavebird never featured rumble to begin with...
- altosaxon, on 10/12/2007, -5/+26I am slightly disappointed with the way that Nintendo is planning to run the virtual console...
The "retro" controller is beginning to seem less of a necessity as long as you have a Gamecube controller. - the_atomic_ned, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14I hope that they come out with console specific controllers for that complete retro feel. I'd be willing to shell out for Wii N64 shells.
- tendonut, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14Actually, just about every single game after Star Fox used it. But Star Fox was the game that made you WANT it because it was packaged in. Then, just like they always do, Sony stole the idea and to this day, I have friends that claim Sony invented everything. Kind of like Howard Stern and radio.
- knugen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10I feel a bit off-topic but your "Sorry did I say window I mean tab" intrigues me to ask if you know of the backspace key?
- dosle, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10DO A BARREL ROLL
- imikedaman, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12Nintendo steals yet another idea from Sony!
- honavery, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9It was pretty cool at the time for Goldeneye.
- Nodren, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10ok sorry to be skeptical, but look at the original article this one references as its source
http://www.computerandvideogames.com/article.php?id=148897&skip=yes
it has no link to this Q&A with nintendo, nor has any been posted on their site(like they promised) since posting that article.
i'd rather see some legit proof before believing this, but if it is true, it's not to big a deal, i mean i played a few n64 games on emulator(saves dusting off the system and what not) and i never really missed rumble.. at least wii and gc games will have it. and hopefully an update later on to the system will allow that functionality - Xarou, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Hopefully it is only because the retro controller doesn't have rumble feature. Maybe they will bring out a retro rumble one of these days.
- bagboyrebel, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12@negativenancy
There is a difference, the PS3 doesn't have rumble for ANY games. The Wii has rumble on all non VC games. And the only VC games that would have it would be N64 games and not all of the games even used it. - mindzero, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Personally, I'd love to have a N64 joy pad for the N64 games. It was so one of a kind and it just seems odd to play the games without the Z-button in the right place, etc.
The Wii "retro controller" will fit nicely for the SNES games though (it seems). - afruff23, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Grumbel beat me to it
Rumble still makes some games make you feel like you're in it, like when you drive onto dirt roads in a game usually on pavement, or when you fall off the bottom in Super Smash Bros. Melee. - Lionhart, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10they got sued for millions because they violated a patent over it
- 5thfreedom, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11@Zen
Why would rumble be essential for the Playstation and not other consoles? That doesn't make any sense. - spyrochaete, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10Yeah, I hate when I'm done playing a game but I have to keep holding the controller for 5 minutes because it's still rumbling. Taking rumble out of the Wii will make me so much more productive! I think I'll go knit an afghan!

> The rubble pack was an expansion that slid in where the memory card went.

Goldeneye and Perfect Dark used it. In addition, there are tons more. Here's a list:
http://www.emutalk.net/general-n64-emulation-discussion/13867-n64-games-rumble-pak-support.html - Rickler, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11The rubble pack was an expansion that slid in where the memory card went. Starfox is the only game I can think of that actually used it. Damn 10 years is a long time ago...
- tuxidomasx, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8only game i noticed the rumble in was starfox 64.
thats cuz they packed a LOT of rumble in there.
and it felt goooood - falstaff, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9I never got any rumble pak games for the N64, and I usually use my Wavebird (no rumble) so when the batteries die and I have to go corded, and the thing starts shaking, I get this "WTF" thing going on before I remember it's supposed to do that. Even on my PC gamepad, I turn it off to save the battery. I won't miss it at all.
- tendonut, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Goldeneye was another game where they made sure you knew it had a rumble feature. Go back and grab a first release box of Goldeneye and you will see how HUGE the "RUMBLE!!" symbol was for it. Eventually, it just shrank and became the same type of symbol as the Memory Card. The Expansion Pak did the same thing actually
- SineNomen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Ocarina Of Time's "Stone Of Agony" has new meaning now.
- hansamurai, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Nintendo's rumble isn't based off Immersion's patent, so Nintendo owes them nothing.
- hansamurai, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Actually, they re-released Super Mario 64 in Japan with rumble. (the more you know)
- tendonut, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I am personally thrilled that they went against their comment at E3 and have now said the GameCube controllers will work with certain Wii games and ALL VC games. I was pissed when I thought I would have to drop $80 for 4 Classic Controllers and $120 for 3 additional Wiimotes just to play 4 player SSB:B. That is getting a bit out of hand if you ask me, considering I have 4 GameCube controllers (including 2 Wavebirds). I have a feeling their change of direction came from people bitching about the exact same thing. They are basically telling you to spend $80 per person for a fully functional controller (Wiimote/Nunchuck/Classic).
- scabbers, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5It might be a problem for people wanting to play Ocarina of Time.
In certain emulators, you can set it to give you a visual cue instead of a rumble. They could let the wiimote make a click or something, I suppose. Simple enough to patch it into the emulation the wii will be using. - Ignitedude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4The Original Article
http://www.computerandvideogames.com/article.php?id=148897&skip=yes - tendonut, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4You know, the only N64 game that is going to be launched for the VC thus far is Mario 64, and that was a launch title, hence no rumble anyways. I'm sure everyone will forget that the feature will be omitted after the first or second wave of VC N64 games.
- allisonaxe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@zer0dmb
you can still buy n64 controllers (and a few other accesssories for older, out-dated systems) direct from nintendo on their webstore, but only in grey. - hackwrench, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Rumble was essential on the PS when it wasn't on other consoles because it was there once they introduced the analog controller, which from that point forward became bundled with new console and nearly every game going forward used it. Meanwhile back on the N64 the rumble pak plugged into the controller, did not come with the console
I remember acquiring a demo disc with an Ape Escape demo that did not work with the original PS non-analog controllers. Once the new controllers were out, a number of games simply did not support the original PS controllers.
One last historical note: The PS analog controller's analog button seems to be solely because the Analog controller uses signals that makes earlier games misread the controller. The original Tomb Raider for PS, for example complains "Controller not found" when the Analog is on. - jewdiknight, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Wow you know how to use Tab browsing. Do you want a cookiee of something? Next time don't be so smug.
- sancho, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Lots of games had rumble, but very few games used/required it. Zelda was one such game, and while it doesn't make the game unplayable, it certainly makes it difficult to /complete/ (as in, get all the heart containers, get every item, etc).
I wonder if they will be modifying the game to take this into account, or if we will be relying on FAQs with screenshots. - tendonut, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Very true. Last few days, I have been playing Ocarina of Time from the Zelda Bonus Disc for the GameCube with my Wavebird (Getting psyched for Twilight Princess) and not until I read this article did I realize "hey...There is no rumble feature...oh well..."
- FrankieB078, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3took the words right out of my fingertips
- terminalpariah, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Exactly, the retro controller isn't pointless because some SNES games are really meant for that diamond layout. The Gamecube's radial button layout doesn't feel right for every title.
- Almadiel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2So... people raise hell about the lack of rumble in the PS3, then shrug it off for the Wii virtual console, eh? I mostly play RPGs so lack of rumble means little to me, but situations seems fishy to me. The only RPG I can think of (I don't count zelda) with rumble is FFXII, and its even turned off on that by default. Though I also tend to turn it off, because I use a wireless controller and I prefer to keep the battery running longer. Good thing the PS3 controller can charge while playing.
- psbpv3o, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Bad news for sony.
oh wait... - zer0dmb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Off Topic, but does anyone know where you can buy N64 controllers at retail anymore?
- gte879p, on 10/12/2007, -6/+8As soon as I saw the title of this article, I immediately looked through the comments for a post with these exact words. If I hadn't found it, I would have posted it my self.
Rumbling is just a stupid little feature. There were very few circumstances where it added to gameplay (being near secret spots in zelda is one of the few useful implementations of it). So for old games, I won't miss it.
If there was ever a company that COULD make innovative use of the rumble feature, it would be Nintendo. But I won't shed a tear over its absence. - DelMonte, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"i was just playing n64 games on my xbox"
What a shame... - hackwrench, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I've also noticed some people grumbling about and some being not bothered. My deeling is that controllers are less expensive these days and buying different controllers with different functions (gamepads, guitar, dancepad, etc) is nowhere the burden it used to be. I think that some of that grumbling is due to remembering how costly controllers seemed.
...though tendonut "They are basically telling you to spend $80 per person for a fully functional controller" may have a point. - smergs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Console Wars happen. It's a fact of life. My friends and I used to argue over which was better between the snes and genesis back in the day. At least I have the excuse that I was like 12 then. Some people no matter how old they are still argue about this stuff. Who cares which one is better. In the end if you are a gamer you will like any of the systems.
Also, I don't think there is a problem with people posting about the Wii on Digg. Just shows the obvious excitement for the new system. There is nothing wrong with that. A lot of people young and old want this new game play style. I'd personally go out and buy the Wii and the PS3 when they come out but I'm getting married in a few months so my finance won't let me waste money on that right now. :( Looks like I'll just have to keep on playing my 360 and enjoy the system that I already bought. - navster15, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I dugg you up in the hope that your comment will get precisely 64 diggs.
- macbookpromat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's sad, yes, but hey most of the time I had the controller with no rumble and my friend wasted batteries with rumble so. I know this makes some people mad, but I don't ever think I played N64 with rumble!
- nthdsnn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The rumble pack (at least for the US version) did indeed work with Super Mario 64. The Super Mario 64 I have was bought at the end of September when the machine came out, so I don't have a later version.
