- ModernTenshi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2WTF does it matter how the damn thing looks? Does it have great games? Does it play them well? Yes? Then shut the ***** up. While a redesign would be interesting, the system is fine, as is. Yes, the PSP may be, "sexier," in comparrison, but last time I checked the DS has sold more units than PSP, so people obviously don't give two ***** about how the system looks. PS2 looks like ***** compared to GameCube, but it's sold WAY more units.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Oh because the lord of all knowledge IGN said it was true then it must be.. then everyone follows it.
Literally of course the company is working on a redesign, all companies do.. what do all these hardware staff do once a game console has been released? Sit on their arses until someone comes up with a revolutionary controller? No, they work for their payslip by impressing staff.
But this doesn't mean the business department and marketting department when presented with this hardware will agree with a release.. they've poured a huge ammount of money into designing and marketting this image, why restart?
It's an okay piece of hardware.. I have the silver and black one and personally I prefer the one tone consoles, in all white and all black, but as mentioned it is retro.
Does it matter so much what it looks like? - dracula7, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3the ds is retro-sexy,
i would be pissed if they made it loo k like that disgusting psp - Elranzer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I can't be the only one sick of hearing the PSP referred to as "sexy."
A piece of black plastic with electronics inside can't be "sexy" unless of course you're a woman (or gay man) and referring to a dildo. - _HAM_, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3"got an officially licensed nintendo accessory pack and it came with a belt holder for ds, so now ds sits nice and secure next to my cell phone"
Holy *****, you should win some sort of nerd prize. - ipodman715, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1lol now we now.. DS LITE ^ Yes
- SLIPSTR3AM, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I love the design personally. Perhaps too many people are into the slick designs that PSP and iPod have brought them. DS was designed to take a beating and keep on working. I love it. Oh and PLEASE don't take this as a Nintendo fanboy comment, it's not. I just enjoy great games, regardless of system.
- syuusuke, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1IGN is rumor mill central
- hollywoodone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1DS LITE
- pxabstract, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I don't understand why people get so worked up about the DS' appearance. It's the GAMES that are important, not whether the system is sexier looking than the competition. This is why innovative games don't come out much anymore. People are so concerned with vanity and aesthetics and less about the quality of the product. I could care less whether the PSP is the better looking unit or not. The DS is cheaper, has better games (and new releases on a regular basis) and has actual battery life.
- orb_nsc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I wouldn't mind them making the buttons a little more comfortable, perhaps make the edges a bit more rounded. Otherwise, I think it's just fine as is.
- Sanchez, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0PhantomJM: Because it sold 1 million in 2 weeks?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Shortage doesn't mean redesign, look at Apple's iPod shuffle, everyone speculated a new one, they didn't announce a new one.. just stock issues.
In Japan it is mentally popular with the new Brain training games. - chaosbuddha, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0it would make no sense to do it this week, they will wait until E3
- STKD, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0IGN rumourmill once again proving that rumour is no substitute for actual news...
- Tezkah, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I dont see why people don't like the DS's design. It is simple, and functional. Clamshell for the win.
- muikano, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The DS's price point is sweet for the hardware they give you. Not to mention, that they've rolled out wifi way faster than the PSP.
As for the small controls, well, it's perfect for asian hands. Don't mean to be elitist but japanese hands are generally around the vicinity of "petite."
And don't believe Nintendo. A redesign is obvioiusly forthcoming. Their one step away from completing total control of the handheld market. The only reason people have a PSPs are because it's so sleek. Take away that reason and goodbye Sony. On a side note, will Digg users shut the hell up. I don't care if you agree. This is the comments section not the "i agree" section, you collective morons. - macattacks10, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0radink, that's impossible to be true. First of the DS screen is 3", while the GBA is only 2.5". Then the old GBA screen was a front lit screen, while the DS is a backlit screen. I don't see them combining the screens, especially that the games are designed already to work with the current hardware design, they can't do anything to drastic that would screw up older games.
- homeobocks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Well, that's what we get for paying attention to the IGN rumour mill.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That being said, locking games to platform is strangely microsoft or sony like, and if you disagree you're a fanboy plain and simple.
- Dgen_X, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0psp isn't sexy...it's sleek and good looking, but not sexy
I'd like to see a DS redesign with controls similar to the SNES control pad, with a similar rounded shape
my fingers hurt after racing 4 tracks in mario kart... - zenlunatic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I don't see how they can redesign the thing. Its already small for the features it has. Its like the ipod nano; how can it possibly get any smaller. If Nintendo does it, than I will be amazed.
All you people complaining about the size, I got an officially licensed nintendo accessory pack and it came with a belt holder for ds, so now ds sits nice and secure next to my cell phone. - _HAM_, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The current design is functional and acceptable. But it coul,d be alot better.
The DS is cool as ***** though, I am really happy with mine. And i'd by a re-design in a second.
$130 is just so cheap why not own two of them. - WolfwoodX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Sigh... I want to get many games for the DS, but I'm not about to get one when a redesign is planed.
- danmanx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Noooooooooooooooo!!!!!
- redwineandblood, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Somehow I'm not suprised, but at the same time I'm a bit dissapointed. I really would like a more ergonomic DS design, 'cause playing Mario Kart for hours on end is killer for your fingers. But you know, however long it takes them to make a really great product - take as long as you want (here's looking at you, Zelda).
- xelloss, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Didn't they say they weren't doing it??
- blackwood, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0They just saying "not now!"
"Nintendo's Reggie Fils-Aime confirmed late last year that a redesign was in the pipeline, and it's thought that there are low levels of DS stock remaining - the handheld has proved a huge hit in Japan, the US and Europe and more than 13 million units have been sold worldwide."
http://www.gamesindustry.biz/content_page.php?aid=14070 - shadowmoses, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0OH man i was getting excited over a potential re-design and they come along and spoil the party!!!!
- PhantomJM, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If there isn't a redesign in the works, what's with the DS shortage in Japan?
- canyonblue, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I am also considering a DS but I have to admit the current form factor aside from being slightly too large is also clearly one of the ugliest physical designs I have ever seen... and clearly "child" like. If they redesign the unit to be smaller (and I understand that it can't go too small due to the nature of the dual screens and touch pad) and use higher quality materials and design to make what is there more professional looking I no doubt will buy one. While it seems petty to not buy a console because of how it looks, the reality is as an adult gamer who would use one on the road I want to maintain a degree of respectability which frankly I don't think you would get when you take a Fisher Price brick that is the current DS.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0[Holy *****, you should win some sort of nerd prize.]
I dont agree with you, but I laughed 5 minutes straight at that. - ipodman715, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Damnit!
- jaredforshey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Gah! I just bought two DS's, one for myself and the other as a gift. I should have known they'd have a redesign in the pipeline. That happened to me when I got a GBA as a gift; the SP was announced a week later!
- zenlunatic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Personally the DS is fine for my rather large hands. I honestly don't see what the big problem is. Besides whats the use trolling on digg? Send a mail to nintendo. But remember the GBA player for GCN. That should at least make you a little bit happy for GBA games with big buttons.
- Bluezdood, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Son of a...
Great, now I have nothing making me want to buy one. - NeilM, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Lies hax!
- zenlunatic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Why use WPA? Its also insecure. You shouldn't be anything on wireless if you care about security.
- TheIguana, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Awww Lovely! Now when the hell am I going to be able to use it with my WPA network?
Iggy *freaking Nintendo* - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I dont know what I was saying about MS and sony, I usually get carried away and say more than I have to.
- nonokiaboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0damn, i was actually going to buy a new ds too. now im gonna have to either wait, or sacrifice the comfort of my hands (apparently)
- sparkmonkeyz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0good, why reinvent the wheel? I like my DS just the way that it is, better than my PSP which is currently collecting dust until i get Liberty City Stories
- TheIguana, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0zenlunatic:
I'm sorry, but who are you exactly? It is absolutely unacceptable for a product to come to the market utilizing only an old and proven again and a again broken encryption scheme for their wireless access. It is proven that WPA with an appropriately long WPA is more than adequately secure. And at that, that is not even the point, Nintendo is failing to support a standard which every consumer and business is quickly ratifying in their networking equipment. So please do not give me this ***** regarding "You shouldn't be anything on wireless if you care about security." That is not the point, the point is Nintendo is doing a pathetic job of supporting standards.
Iggy - Trjn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0>That being said, locking games to platform is strangely microsoft or sony like, and if you disagree you're a fanboy plain and simple.
No, disagreeing with you would simply be acknowledging that from a business perspective having games exclusive to consoles is smarter. Everyone does it, and thats probably the big difference between consoles, the exclusive games, would you buy a second console if it had all the same games on it? I know I wouldn't what would be the point?
As for the DS redesign, its going to happen, I like my DS as it is now, I've adapted to using it so there is no pain, but it would be nice if there wasn't the need to adapt. - nonokiaboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0We need more comments! I'm considering a DS.
- misterscaryface, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0hahaha the fisher price brick?! that's awesome...
lets just say, I'm tired of reading on these posts that the DS is ugly and the PSP is sexy. Wow it's amazing what a little black and gloss coating on plastic can do! I on the other hand seem to think it's a rather well designed handheld, the clam-shell design protects the screens from getting scratched and the overall length of it fits perfect in your hands...pick up a gameboy from 10 years ago...that thing was a brick. The DS may have small buttons but only the people with big fingers are complaining.
Now I will admit that the comfort of playing mariokart for hours on end does hurt the hands if not accustomed to it. Ergonomically it needs to be redesigned but not aesthetically. I know everyone likes to carry around the latest and flashiest gadgets that are out nowadays, but honestly if I'm at a bus stop, or on a break at work, I'll play the DS over PSP any day.
The touch screen on the DS is probably its biggest selling point, and I have to say, it flat out rocks. After playing games like Meteos, and Advance Wars you just can't go back to playing games any other way. Nintendo has taken that step forward in the handheld market, which had been long awaited.
Now I'm not going to dis the PSP as it is a pretty good little system too. My only problem with it is the games factor...there are more movies out for the PSP than games, and I'm kind of tired of it, I'm not going to pay $30 for a movie I already have on DVD at home. If your looking to watch movies in your hand then go get a portable DVD movie player and save your money re-buying all the movies you already own. Now, the PSP has some pretty kick ass graphics for the games that have come out (which isn't many, compared to the DS), I too am waiting for Liberty, that game looks sooo sweet.
But for all those who want to hop on the DS Bash wagon go ahead. I'm not going to stop you. If your a PSP Basher, go ahead. Thing is, each system has it's pros and cons. I'm sure, a year or two down the road the PSP will get a redesign, and everyone on that forum will be bashing it for all kinds of reasons. i guess we'll have to wait and see though. Each to their own I guess. - bpapa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Doh. I love the DS - it's got an absolutely amazing software library going for it right now - IMO, it had the best library of any game system in 2005. But the system is ugly, clunky, and a big too big for my tastes.
If a redesigned, slimmed-down DS came out I'd be all on that like white on rice. - RocketMike, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0http://digg.com/gaming/Nintendo_DS_LITE_-_finally_revealed_
- editorialctrl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Man, this is OLD NEWS. A week ago I read a quote from Nintendo America where that stated there would be no announcement. Crap, come first thing Monday in Europe and US /EVERYONE/ knew there was no announcement given that everyone in Japan had ended their Monday - doesn't take a quote from NoE to set that straight, does it? Old news, from a lame site
- DNABeast, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0When I first saw the DS prototype I was quite excited and looked forward to seeing the final design. When it released looking exactly the same I was aghast. It's just so big and unstreamlined.
Considering Nintendo were the first to do dual screens (Donkey Kong Game and Watch Woo!) I'm amazed the DS looks so ugly. Still, if it's the only system I can play the new 2d mario on,.. well I'll be picking one up. ( I just hope the redesign comes first) -
