***** YEA - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Mmmm touch screen porn.
- bjohnsonwsu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2To the naysayers: http://my.opera.com/community/blog/show.dml/144474
- Ray301, on 11/09/2007, -0/+2Now if only they could implement WPA on the wifi... I have two online capable games for the DS but haven't yet tried to log on the system because its a pain in the ass to switch between WEP and WPA constantly.
- sparkmonkeyz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1omg, i LOVE you nintendo.
Now I can fight back when all of those gay PSP fans are all "Well does the DS have a browser?"
Keep up the good news!! - schmalle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If you run Opera on your PC, you can switch to the Small Rendering Engine with Shift + F11. It's nearly the same width as the DS display and it looks great :)
- lame_duck, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1cartwheels: Power has nothing todo with the PSP browser troubles. It just doesn't have the memory. The PSP browser is a joke.
Now, if Nintendo actually releases this AND it has a way to use the game card for memory and storage, well be sittin' pritty. - System84, on 11/09/2007, -0/+1Nintendo should start supporting WPA before they release a browser.
- Dgen_X, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1that tv tuner is a MOCKUP! remember...mockup = not real so don't worry...but it better be pretty small or else I wouldn't pick it up
remember the size of the Game Gear tv tuner...it was pretty small and that was 10 years ago
but if this browser isn't free there's no way I'll be surfing the web at DS resolutions... - Brutis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i will buy a DS and more nintendo products due to thier innovation, It is surpassing everyone, graphics arent everything and people will soon see that with the revolution. Get ready people.
- mercano, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@pbjorge12:
I call BS on it being Opera powered...But a browser is possible...
I'd argue its highly plausible. Opera already has commercial builds for PDAs, which share the DS's processor architecture, limited memory, and small touch screen. Simply a matter of figuring out what goes on the top screen, as the page itself would need to be on the bottom if you are going to click on links, as would any toolbars. Of course, with 12 hardware buttons, who needs a toolbar? - Cyborg771, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yeah, kitsune it isn't much the quality that people like, it's a little thing called portability. For people who leave their houses something they don't need to lug around in a suitcase is helpful.
- eigh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0and for those of you that say opera wont be good for it, obviously youve never seen some homebrew that connect up to your pc, they have each screen at a different magnification its great.
eigh: What homebrew app are you talking about ?
Can you give an URL please ?
http://www.fraggerock.com/index.php/2006/01/25/control-your-pc-with-your-nintendo-ds/
i dont have the homebrew stuff to actually try that out, but i believe that is it. - errorik, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I browse the web often on my Sidekick2, and it's resolution (240x160 pixels) is even more crap than the DS. But it's my cell phone, I always have it with me, so I can check something whenever I *need* to.
Gmail mobile is awesome for checking on such small screens. Gmail also has a page that will "mobilize" any URL you give it.
But I don't see buying a separate DS card just to be able to browse the web, and then carrying it around with my DS all the time. I think Opera and Nintendo should make a deal to bundle the web browser on a card included with the new DS Lite, or even more importantly - on the same card as the new Mario DS game. Mario will sell huge, and will be a game many will carry around (for some time at least). It would be awesome if the game just had a browser option on the main menu. And I would guess that Mario would have extra room on the card. - MasterBeowulf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Oh nintendo, i love you and all your majesty. Opera on my DS, could you have read my mind any clearer?? Lets just hope it is Opera(immafanboy). The DS is set to
- sparkmonkeyz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i am not sure how it is going to cache anything or even let me save the browser, are they going to support HD's for the DS, have a cartrige that i have to buy that will have the browser on it, maybee i even have to be near one of those new kiosks they are putting up and go to download play. I am not so sure about this article if it is true, and i wont be dissapointed if it is because linux for the DS is going to be coming out and we can bet there will be a browser for it.
- CadMasterAdam, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0that would be awesome.
- ghostcat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The upper screen magnification shown in the mockup pic really has me interested. This is how I see it working: The bottom screen renders a scrollable, small version of the whole page with links and everything clickable with the stylus, like a mouse. The toolbar at the bottom of the screen allows for a pop-out keyboard to input URLs and form data, a favorites list, maybe some rss functionality...whatever, but it also allows you to make a magnification window that you can drag across the page. This would allow you to view the page's content at ACTUAL SIZE in the top screen (albeit cropped). To my knowledge, no other handheld allows for this functionality, and it's only capable through the unique combination of touch sensitivity and dual screens. If they implement browsing in this way (as the mockup suggests) the DS is the perfect tool for webbrowsing in a handheld format. Also, Opera updates (and possibly plugins like flash) could be downloaded and written to the cartridge since it is a writable format. It's all spec, but interesting to think about...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"i am not sure how it is going to cache anything or even let me save the browser, are they going to support HD's for the DS, have a cartrige that i have to buy that will have the browser on it, maybee i even have to be near one of those new kiosks they are putting up and go to download play. Opera's press release says they will release the browser on a DS cart. I think the carts hold around 1gb of memory so that should solve most cache problems. I think.
Here's the press release again, though someone else posted it higher up in the comments.
http://www.opera.com/pressreleases/en/2006/02/15/ - pbjorge12, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Opera! Yes! This looks awesome! The top screen shows a large view and the bottom screen is used to drag the view across the screen - Like the windows magnifier! And a TV Tuner - I'm getting both!!!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0the psp has internet browsing problems because its ***** memory
yet opera mobile works on cellphones, so i dont see why not on the ds which is 'way more poweful' than the average consumers phone - jesusphreak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I hope this is true. I'd love to use a touch-screen based browser on the DS.
- deadbaby, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0A full scale browser seems unlikely but I'd be perfectly happy with a RSS reader, simple POP mail client and a IM client bundled into one cart.
- CrazyForSW, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That's awesome! Guess it's time for me to get a DS.
- cl0ck_werk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0all i can say is i'm as giddy as a schoolgirl.
- jesusphreak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Theoretically couldn't Nintendo just release this on a cartridge and that way the browser could utilize the memory on the cart itself?
Preferrably, they would release it as a GBA cart so that you could have it and a DS plugged in at the same time. - Cerberus047, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0oh no i just blew my stack thinking about how awesome that is....
- timmyboywonder, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Does anyone know that if you buy a DS lite from Lik-sang.com if it will have an option to change the language to english and will it be compatable with our 110v Plugins ?
- Dgen_X, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm starting to come around...and when this is available I'll be picking it up for sure
- Vill4no, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0pics from japanese DS press conference.
http://kotaku.com/gaming/breaking/dstv-and-opera-pictures-154960.php - Yogurth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Both Opera and Nintendo are on the roll these days.
- zorbo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0eigh: What homebrew app are you talking about ?
Can you give an URL please ? - muleking, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0 timmyboywonder: I have an import DS and the AC Adapter works just fine because the voltage is close enough to US voltage. So, I am assuming the DS LITE would have no problem either.
- aywwts4, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Want to see how you can browse a web page on a tiny window with TWO SCREENS just fine?
Go to Start - Programs - Accessories - Accessability - Magnifier
We wont need special web pages or anything, just drag your stylus over a full page overview, move it as you read. Wow, it just might work. - tricab, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i just sold my psp and im waiting to get a DS.
i love nintendo. they just make freaking awesome hand held consoles. - jonesey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Not only is the DS getting a browser, but Konami is porting winning eleven to it. Everyone should own one of these :)
- eigh, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1alot of you hope it will be an add on for teh GBA slot, this would be impossible. as soon as you load somethign from the GBA slot, the DS shuts off the extra screen, wifi and the DS processor. if they come out with this web add on, it will have to run off of a DS cartridge.
- teratoma, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0you can see the Opera of NDS and TVtuner with president Iwata.
http://plusd.itmedia.co.jp/games/articles/0602/15/news061.html - porksoda, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0dugg because opera kicks ass
- GolfDude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0ign has made this all official.. this is all true..
- pomaybo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i just wanna be able to control my xbmc with it, i would like to also maybe write gmail and use some web based AIM client.
this DS is getting better all the time, first a 10 player wi fi tetris, then a new side scrolling mario (i can't WAIT for this game) and finally a web browser.
I'm so proud to be a nintendo fan boy. - Zukunft, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Japan News video showing some clips of Opera in action.

And if you haven't heard. Nintendo will also bunde a RAM upgrade that is packaged in a GBA cart so you'll have a better experience browsing. - SilentSpyder, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Even though I don't use it that much I like Opera. It's a browser with some good features. Maybe if they work on their GUI and try to speed it up a bit it'll be better.
- Groovester, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Good 'ol DS Advanced, they break the news as soon as it happens!
- jimmyM, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i bought the ds when it came out because i knew this was coming. i live in a big city so there is wifi everywhere i go. i will basically have free internet eveywhere without lugging around a laptop. it will be sweet to surf the web between innings at baseball games and while killing time around town.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Smart move for Nintendo. Good for Opera too.
- lane.montgomery, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i wonder if the tv tuner will pick up digital signals, not just analog.
- GhostFreeman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Good move, Nintendo and Opera. Hopefully, this will get Sony on the ball and make the realize they can't win the handheld market with only a web browser and RSS.
- micromause, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0w00t w00t! Opera=Best Browser Ever!
