- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+36how was nintendo the "loser of the last video-game console war"? They are the only company to produce a *PROFITABLE* gaming console. How is that considered a failure?
- Shorties, on 10/12/2007, -0/+27@ roar
Yeah because a system that comes with a game called "Wii Sports" will have no appeal to sports fans...
/Sarcasm
No seriously the whole Nintendo is kiddy thing got old years ago. Even if Wii Sports has a cartoony feel there are still games like madden that will play completely differently and more realistically with the controller, the kind of gameplay sports fans love. Oh and FYI Disney Channel has no ads except for their own Disney related ads... - LordofChaosIori, on 10/12/2007, -1/+22Can't wait to see the commercials!
I just hope they don't get a "Nintendo" guy and "PS3" guy thing going on. - datagod, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17Please explain how being the only company who produced a *PROFITABLE* game system (Game Cube) is seen as the "Loser" ?
- kenvsryu, on 10/12/2007, -3/+19Why did they wait so long? I haven't seen a Wii ad on tv, while PS3 and Xbox have been on during sporting events.
- NeoPlatonist, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14I really love this satirical ad from a while back:
http://www.lovethatfun.com/PS3_vs_Wii/702/ - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13@roar84:
Have you not heard the news? The Wii is being aimed at hardcore gamers. The Wii will have Call of Duty 3, Red Steel, etc. - Shorties, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9@Roar
http://www.gamespot.com/news/6152588.html?q=MLB%20Wii - Sharkee, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10I don't think Nintendo cares who buys it, as long as they buy it. I don't understand why they waited so long to start advertising in the US. They've basically relied on fanboys and 'net word of mouth. They did do one thing right though: they've leaked little bits of info slowly over time to keep it constantly in the news for the past 3 months. I've noticed here on Digg in that time there has always been a Wii article make it to the front page several times a week.
- dagamer34, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Although only a few people would say that the Gamecube did better than the PS2, going by the numbers alone, the Xbox failed miserably. I don't know about you, but if any other company besides Microsoft and Google lost $4 billion, they'd be down the toilet.
Besides, in the real world, it's all about money and not market share. Having both is definitely good, but loosing one to gain another is risky business. - daridave, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7It's still surprising. I remember b*tching at Nintendo for being total idiots marketing-wise with the Gamecube (well, anyway -- it's kind of hard to sell a console that looks like a lunchbox, so it would have been wasted money!)
This is should be considered great news, because Nintendo has A LOT of freakin' bank and for once (as far as I can remember), they're using it! They have a serious advantage over SONY right now which is "actually having consoles to sell", so they better use this advantage or else... - howie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7"It is NOT good in terms of sports game play."
Says who? - dr00, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8because it sold less units and therefore, has the lowest market share. although sony made less money on its system, third party developers made a killing.
don't get me wrong, i love nintendo and personally hate the very awkward bluntness of this article, but we have to be realistic. just because nintendo makes a profit with every system sold doesn't mean it's going to win over microsoft and sony who lose money with each system. - dr00, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6well obviously it depends on how you define it.
i don't agree with it, and personally i think that the only clear LOSER is sega; i was just saying why one would feel that way. - motang, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Well it's not too late, the holiday shopping season hasn't even started.
- TGDuff, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4FTA: "Nintendo probably will sell about 1.5 million Wii consoles in the U.S. through the end of this year, according to Jeetil Patel, an analyst at Deutsche Bank Securities in San Francisco. He forecasts about 500,000 U.S. sales of PlayStation 3. Microsoft probably will sell 2.28 million Xbox 360s in November and December, he said."
Interesting considering only 400,000 or less PS3 units will be available at launch in the west. Does he really believe there will be another shipment before the end of the year? - L0phtpDK, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Oh yea... wasn't Nintendo the only company to profit last gen?
- Shorties, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Get a 360 then, I've got one of those and I am going to get a Wii. The 360 will have your same sports games as the PS3 but $200 cheaper.
- bpapa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3They didn't have to go all out until now. I think it's a given that all the initial units are going to sell out already, so why waste money on marketing? To try and trick people into thinking you are cool?
- aywwts4, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Why would they start advertising any earlier, who is going to see an advertisement and go buy one? Nobody, because they arent out yet.
PS3 Can advertise all it wants, but since the only way to get one is waiting 24 hours or eBay, I doubt advertisement is going to affect things much.
Who might see an advertisement next month and buy one? Hopefully a few million people. - Cglass, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3This article is friggen bonkers, these numbers aren't even close, I would bank Nintendo sells all 4 million they ship, and Sony, well who the ***** knows how many they can actually sell. They really think the PS3 will match Wii sales?
"Nintendo probably will sell about 1.5 million Wii consoles in the U.S. through the end of this year, according to Jeetil Patel, an analyst at Deutsche Bank Securities in San Francisco."
Followed by:
"Pachter estimates Sony will sell about 1.5 million PlayStation 3s." - bpapa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I guess it all goes by how you define win. Most people use market share for that, even though if you have huge market share every generation and don't make any money doing it, you won't last as long as the profitable company.
- DevilDunkard, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That article is a very short sided view of the machines potential. I for one think it has the only true "Next Gen" option out there. The machine is showing something completely different over just taking current machine ideas and making them more powerful. Also, i feel that this system will get the new gamers, like people that have never played a game in there life, as well at the hardcore gamer just wanting to see something different and creative over just more power. I'm a hardcore gamer that is all for the idea, and ill be in a line for one. Even without the commercials.
- Shorties, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Aww ***** I found it apparently Nintendo asked them to take it down, all the ones on youtube have been taken down too.
http://www.n-philes.com/index.php?id=3102
Anyone got a torrent or something? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i think they know that this is going to be a long war, and that its too soon to start blowing money on expensive TV ads. they are gonna place those around the holidays. they know that all the hardcore gamers, who will buy up the first few million consoles are already ready and waiting, and dont need any advertising dollars spent to convince them to go out and get one. so when the first buying wave is over, then the marketing push will work its magic and bring out the masses
- Shorties, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Didn't they show a Nintendo Wii ad the other day at the Reggie press conference? Anyone know where I can find a clip of that? Anyone know where I can see the whole conference too?
- heysuburbia, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Here are the commercials that are airing tonight:
http://wiinintendo.net/?p=1909 - jsully, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1People call it the loser of the last generation because of the fact that it lagged behind the PS2 and Xbox in sales, making it 3rd place in a race of 3, which in some peoples eyes qualifies it as the "loser."
As an aside datagod, Microsoft was the only member of the last generation to end up with a loss on hardware. The Gamecube hardware was profitable from the getgo, and PS2 hardware was profitable from year two forward, (and even more so with the cost cutting slim redesign) - toshipaine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I hope with the number of units Nintendo is promising (1.2 million) and the uber craze for the PS3 there will actually be some units available for people walking into their neighborhood retailer. I hope Nintendo. I hope.
- kfconme, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2...480p
- howie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Surely they mean "expand the Nintendo market beyond children and teens"? IIRC, most gamers are between 18 and 27 or so. It's a bit arrogant if Nintendo thinks it IS the "video-game market". PS2 is very popular among young adults.
What I personally am hoping to see is that Nintendo reaches those groups dominated by Sony until now. As one may be able to tell from my digg history, I'm really excited about Wii. I'm just hoping that Nintendo doesn't delude itself into thinking that Sony didn't successfully reach the adult market with PS2... - cyn0sure, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I wonder how much they spent on their viral campaigns here on Digg and elsewhere?
- ajr2006, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"About 80 percent of advertising for Wii will target adults in an attempt to expand the video-game market beyond children and teens that have been Nintendo's traditional market, said George Harrison, the company's senior vice president for marketing. Nintendo will spend the $200 million during the next 12 months."
hmmm... it's good to see that they're appealing to an older market, still I'd like to see more third party developers joining nintendo. - someguy9, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1to bad 360 and zune have a marketing budget of 1 billion $
- WhereAmI, on 10/12/2007, -5/+5all I have seen on the news was ps3 launch announcements....
- gatorsrule21, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3@MoonsFang
Yea, but all that means for me is I have to camp out earlier. - ion8er, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Viral Campaigns?
I am pretty sure that people just... like the Wii.
No need for "viruses." - Rikkochet, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Agreed - it's PS3 all over the place in Western Canada. PS3 launch announcements are plastered on the front page of every flyer from stores that carry it. Wii is relegated to page 8 with the Xbox 360 game specials, and two of the six flyers I looked at actually bothered to give a price.
- crcurran, on 10/12/2007, -8/+4Sony's launch will be drowned out by MS announcements, Gears and the Wii Launch.
SD commercials of HD games will look marginally better than SD commercials of the Nintendo Wii; It's the radical controller that will grab peoples attention (whether it works 100% or not) - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+0yup..same here. it is all PS3 and no Wii in upstate NY. crcurran just made it up and hoped no one would call his bluff.
- goanalog, on 10/12/2007, -5/+0I'll be interested to see whether they continue their apeing of apple, apparent in the design of the wii and the ds lite as well as reliance on fanboy e-speculation, into their proper marketing campaign.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1Come on...I am not siding with roar...but to suggest that Wii Sports is going to appeal to the sports fans is a bit of a stretch, don't you think? By all accounts, Wii Sports is nothing more than something to show off the functions of the controller. It is NOT good in terms of sports game play.
- ajr2006, on 10/12/2007, -5/+0you're wrong... do you even know what you're talking about? Sony blows Microsoft and Nintendo out of the water, in terms of next gen, and about that other stuff... well, yeah
- ryanfelix, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1"Nintendo Co., loser of the last video- game console war"
That was so very bluntly put. Not that I disagree though. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -7/+0 aywwts...I sure hope you don't have any plans on going into the marketing, or adversiing industries as a career.
- prosthetichead, on 10/12/2007, -12/+2well in every game store I have been too here in Australia the amount of Xbox games is normally half a wall or so, 1 wall for PS2 and 2 Rows for Gamecube.
(this was last year too now is still the same just the Xbox part is now mostly 360 games) - roar84, on 10/12/2007, -14/+1@ shorties
yeah, i forgot about that one. Emphasis on ONE. I was referring to sim sports games. I am an huge sports fan and i would say i spend 70% of my game play on sports games. That is the biggest reason i am looking forward to getting a hold of a either an xbx or ps3. - roar84, on 10/12/2007, -28/+1@ shorties : Ohh my god you are hilarious. Yeah, Wii sports will definetly get all the sports fans out there excited. As long as these sports fans watch saturday morning cartoons also. Wake up, beside madden, what other sports game is in the works for Wii. NBA, NHL, MLB????? the answer is none.
- roar84, on 10/12/2007, -43/+2@kenvsryu: don't look for wii commercials during sporting events. You should be looking for them on nickelodeon and the disney channel.

What is Digg?
