- CanadianGeese, on 10/12/2007, -8/+52*sigh* How about some good games for it? How about announcing some new 3rd party titles? Wii fans, you gotta be feeling me on this, right?
- skywake, on 10/12/2007, -11/+34@ahrenba
umm... if you read the article they actually say that
and the title says "Wii is the #1 new console" not "Wii is the best selling console" - sid0, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16WTF?
Is this 'tripple' stuff -- first the 'tripple' 60 then the PS 'tripple' -- some sort of gangsta rap? I'm sorry, but I don't stay up to date with these things nowadays. - AhrenBa, on 10/12/2007, -34/+48One thing that people are failing to realize for the month of March is that the PS2 actually sold more than any single next-gen console, including the Wii.
- xpliclt777, on 10/12/2007, -14/+27Sigh... all these comments saying PS2 this, PS2 that. Reading comprehension is really a rarity these days. #1 NEW game console.... NEW game console... NEW, NEW, NEW.....
Honestly I think it's safe to assume that these comments are coming from Sony Fanboys. - ahawks, on 10/12/2007, -11/+24@ahrenba:
Let's not forget that the PS2 is so poorly made that many owners are on their 2nd or even 3rd PS2. Sales remain high because it's been in the market so long that the ones in use are continually dying, and so people need new ones.
It's the lightbulb business model. - andydumi, on 10/12/2007, -4/+16I think people are just criticizing the way the info is presented. If one said "Sony PS3 Best Selling HD console!!" that would technically be true, or "X360 Best Selling Overall Console!!" that would also be technically true.
So I think people are just frustrated that the info is presented in such a way to make the Wii look better than it really is doing, making it look like it is the "best selling console" due to a semantical technicality. - PunkRockRalph, on 10/12/2007, -5/+16is anybody else getting tired of the console wars? im a DEVOUT nintendo enthusiast but in defense of you ps3 fanboys, im forced to admit that ps2 shat all over everything, and is still doing really well.
remember the good ol' days when gamers were united?
cant we all just get along? - Ace25, on 10/12/2007, -5/+15Super Paper Mario is pretty awesome if you ask me. It has renewed my interest in the Wii since Zelda.
- thenativeraver, on 10/12/2007, -16/+25Go Nintendo!
- jimic79, on 10/12/2007, -6/+15@ilyag
"Next Gen" is a hardware pissing contest. I stick to my thoughts that Wii is next generation because anyone can buy hardware and cram it into a box, but it's the intuitive-thinking that makes Wii have it's extremely high replay value. But we'll never settle the "my console is better than your console" argument... It all comes down to which games you like to play and what machine they're made for, not the machine itself. - cwilli14, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10i think it might have something to do with parents shelling out 400 & 600 dollars on a system for their kids.
/just sayin. - UglyShirts, on 10/12/2007, -8/+15Gee, one of these days, I'd sure like to be able to buy one.
COME THE ***** ON, NINTENDO. It's been six effin' months, and there are no more around now than there were on launch day! I can't think of a single other consumer product that's EVER come out where the shortages have still been this severe after a half-year on the market. It's inexcusable that a company that size can't get their ***** together and have them available 24/7 on every shelf in every store that carries games. - Itazura, on 10/12/2007, -8/+14Considering last gen is still outselling "next gen" shouldn't we be waiting til the ps2 isn't number one before we decide who is winning next gen?
- scabbers, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Judging from the games on offer I think I'd rather buy a PS2 than any of the next gen consoles.
- lazn, on 10/12/2007, -5/+10@ahrenba
http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20070420-first-quarter-console-sales-nintendo-rules-the-roost.html
Actually, the last quarter the Wii out sold the PS2... - belebih, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5"remember the good ol' days when gamers were united?"
Actually no, no I don't. Back in the day all my friends and I used to constantly argue about which was better, the NES or the Sega Master System? SNES or Genesis? Some fought for the SegaCD when it came out, as well as the 3DO, the Jaguar, and the Saturn. Later it was PS1 vs. N64 vs. Dreamcast... lots of systems coming out constantly. Everyone always chose what they liked and argued for it the same as today. So there's always been console wars ever since there was more than one console to choose from. Still, it''s all in good fun and makes for healthy competition between companies, which can only mean better products for us to enjoy.
Typical discussion between my friends and I in elementary school circa 1987:
My friend: "Dude, but Super Mario is just too awesome! NES forever!"
Me: "But Alex Kidd has much better graphics! Master System forever!"
*fistfight* - scabbers, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5sid0 I think it's an in-joke with some reverse-marketing thing on Youtube. Don't waste any more time thinking about it.
- TDR25, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Kicking ass...taking names! Yep, Reggie said it best!
- JayMD, on 10/12/2007, -7/+12With the DS, PS2 and the Wii outselling the Xbox360 and the PS3, maybe the world isn't ready for HD gaming yet.
Maybe Nintendo was right... - Quix, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7"The Wii is essentially a last-gen console with a funky new controller, so its very relevant how last-gen is doing in relation to it." - grumbel
The Xbox 360 and PS3 are essentially last-gen consoles with funky new HD graphics. See how dumb that sounds? The Wii is just as next-gen as any of the others. Nintendo simply focused on innovative new gameplay rather than processing power.
I'm so tired of these lame "Wii is last-gen" arguments. If "next-gen" is about changing gaming, then the Wii is the most next-gen console of the three. The PS3 and 360 are just more of the same old thing, but with shinier graphics. - chris4404, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7Forget the Wii look at Hand held sales.
FTA:
"In the hand-held category, sales of the Nintendo DS hit 508,000 in March, ahead of Sony's PlayStation Portable, or PSP, with 180,000. Portable game hardware sales rose by about one-third to $114 million." - Darthmalt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4The Wii's price point is a huge factor in getting parents to buy a system for their kids.
- chrismartens26, on 10/12/2007, -5/+8Do we honestly need a front page digg article for every month of sales? The Wii is awesome and will probably outsell the 360 and PS3 for a long time. End of story. I don't see why this is front page material.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4@mywhitenoise:
Oh, so now you expect Nintendo to compete with websites that give you the ROM for free? Sorry, I don't think they're concerned with pricematching when it comes to piracy.
Absolutely horrible and worthless argument. That's like saying a $12 music CD is $12 too much because I can just download the CD on a torrent somewhere. Are you a complete idiot? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+8Who the hell cares?
Why do I need to see this message every hour? - anamanaman, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Software sales (including attach rate) is very important also. Xbox 360 is leading in this area.
Publishers look at software sales much more than console sales. For example, many people (including me) have a wii only for wii sports. That equals a low software attach rate (0). Of my planned future game purchases for wii, they are pretty much entirely first party (metroid, galaxies). Xbox 360 owners generally buy quite a few games. You can see this in the game sales numbers (a 3rd party game, Ghost Recon 2, is on top).
Games matter, and 3rd party publishers have to choose where to put their resources. - gcauthon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3@aurorous
"Nintendo's making about 1 million consoles per month . . ."
RTFA! From the article...
"The Wii was again the No. 1 current-generation video game console, selling 259,000 units."
So are you saying they only sold one-fourth of the consoles they made? Or are you admitting they're holding a few back? The ancient PS2 sold more units than one of the hottest gaming consoles to date? If you can't admit they were holding back last month then you're just in denial. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"other than that what else is there worth coming out?"
Fire Emblem, for one.
Anyway, if you hate the Wii so much why did you buy all those games for it? Wouldn't you stop at the first game, or at least RENT the next game instead of buying it and then screaming "OMG THIS SUX!!!"? Personally I try not to support companies whose products I do not enjoy, but then again I tend to be a fan of logic.
Edit: This is directed at mywhitenoise, below. - SkippyDoorknob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2That's just for North America. The rest of the million-per-month go to other countries.
- TheTjalian, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3By your standards, the PS1 should of been considered Gen 4.5, seen as the Saturn and the N64 completely raped it in terms of hardware. Oh, and the PS2 should be considered Gen 5.5, considering the Gamecube and XBOX raped that too in terms of hardware.
- GoalieStr1, on 10/12/2007, -7/+9This is how I see it. I want to stay neutral here and I am not purposely trying to bash Sony, but just because the PS2 is outselling everything does NOT make it a winner, nor does Sony like to see that. If you are a hardware maker, you do not want to see your previous gen system sell more than the newest product. That's almost an insult to the PS3 in my opinion. Thats like saying MS likes it if XP sells more than Vista (that is just an analogy, don't argue about "Vista sucks!@#$! blahblah)...
- R3Dirkulous, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1For those of you saying Nintendo is in a drought of good third party support, please go look into that...theres more than a handful of games in excited about..such as mario galaxy, metroid prime 3, super smash, both resident evils, just to name a few that will be out THIS YEAR. After I bought my 360..now that was a drought...but games finally came and now I'm a proud owner of 2 awesome systems.
- whiteguysamurai, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Sure sure, whatever, but it's still no match for the Dreamcast!
Then again, nothing is. - deMonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If I was a Nintendo share holder, digg is where I'd come to read about the stock's performance. But really, do we need another Wii sales story every 2 days? It's not even "news" if Nintendo's always winning. Maybe it'd be nice if something would change so I could at least read a different headline for once.
- chingy1788, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1DS owns all
That is all - carpespasm, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2it's like if honda were selling more 99 civics than 07 civics.
- thenativeraver, on 10/12/2007, -10/+11Hey,
I still have my NES, they helped fill in my craving for video games when I was younger, I'll be loyal for life. - offspring06, on 10/12/2007, -9/+10Whats so ***** about the Wii? For your information the Wii is a great console.
- mywhitenoise, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I've been bashing it for a long time, because I've had that piece of ***** for 6 months. If I need to, I'll prove that I have a Wii, along with those games by taking a picture with a sign that says "mywhitenoise hates wii".
- JoeCool1986, on 10/12/2007, -8/+8... it says the Wii is the #1 selling _current_ generation console.
Also, the DS outsold the PS2 and PSP by a large factor, so nintendo still wins :) - elfxstephen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wii is a GREAT game system but there aren't that many good single-player games out right now. Guess I just have to wait...
- DKing303, on 09/15/2008, -0/+0Sony and MS might want to implement some of the things making the Wii popular. Just a thought, it's a copy cat world.
http://www.creditcredible.com/gameconsole/accessor ... - OgnodoD, on 10/12/2007, -6/+6I remember you from months ago on Digg. (I used to be here under a different name, but lost access to my e-mail and forgot my password.) You've been bashing the Wii for a long, long time. I seriously doubt you even own one, but if you do, you certainly didn't go in with an open mind.
- johnhummel, on 10/12/2007, -8/+8@Canadiangeese: No, I don't. My boys and I are playing Super Paper Mario right now (actually, my 5 year old is while I type this out). When they're done, I'll load up Metal Slug and give it a run. I've been thinking about the Prince of Persia which I haven't played from the original PS2 version, or just playing a cheap Gamecube game I never got around to.
For a 5 month old console, I'm not feeling this "drought". If there is a huge spate of games through, say, the end of the year then I'll care, but for now? Nope. i don't feel you right now. - ExaltedDragon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Look at this:
http://digg.com/gaming_news/Strong_Month_for_360_Sales - chrismartens26, on 10/12/2007, -9/+9What's so awesome about it?
1. The remote
2. Option to purchase classic Nintendo branded games from previous consoles that otherwise would not be attainable
3. The price
The better games will come, it's just a matter of time. - crappyatticus, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2"That $250 console uses a motion-sensitive controller that has been popular with mainstream gamers as well as new audiences like females, senior citizens and very young children."
"I WANT TO PLAY GAMES!"
"DAMNIT Grandpa eat your vegtables or no Wii!" - mywhitenoise, on 10/12/2007, -10/+91. The remote
Which is what you are paying $250 for.
2. Option to purchase classic Nintendo branded games from previous consoles that otherwise would not be attainable
Hmm, I seem to remember having over 500 games from NES - N64 on my computer at home, that I downloaded for free. Not $6 a game.
3. The price
$200 is reasonable (especially when they were speculating it at the price along with a bonus remote and nunchuk), $250 sucks ass.
What about the games? Isn't that supposed to be the most important part? - aurorous, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3While your busy bashing Nintendo for the lack of Wii's lets keep in mind that this time last year it was the 360 that couldn't be found anywhere. And by this time microsoft had only put half as many systems on the shelves. 6miilion+ Wii's have been made and every last one of them has been sold.
Nintendo's making about 1 million consoles per month but that has to be split across the world, and lets not forget 8 months ago NOBODY (not even Nintendo fanboys) honestly thought that Nintendo would meet their goal of selling 6 million by march. A lot of people thought Nintendo was making a big mistake making more systems than they could sell. Now look at what people are saying...
Also keep in mind that the DS is also selling as fast as they can make them. In Japan get about 100,000-200,000 DS's per week and they sellout the minute the stores receive them and it's been like this for the past 15 consecutive months. Now their selling 500,000 units per month in America in some places (not everywhere) DS's are harder to find than Wii's.
Both the DS and the Wii were both written off as antiquated gimmick systems that would fail miserably next to the PSP, PS3, 360 with their super realistic 4D graphics and blast processing and whatever the hell else they're claiming this week. Going all the way back to the old atari systems the most powerful game system has never been the winner in any generation. Nintendo's doing it their way and they're winning. -
