- Paroparo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+63The Gamecube had hype, but nowhere near this much. Also, it wasn't a bad system and didn't really fail. The only problem was low sales because so many people bought a PS2, so more games were made for the PS2, so more people bought it, so more games were made for it etc. Wii is looking much better than the Gamecube did and this time and the competition is far less lethal, as the audience is nowhere near as interested in the PS3 as they were in the PS2. Sure there are loads of people wanting to get one, but this isn't a 200 dollar console vs a 300 dollar console, this is 200 vs 600!
Think about that, I haven't. - treelovinhippie, on 10/12/2007, -1/+38It's a good thing Sony have an expansive range of products to fall back on when... er, should... the PS3 and Blu-Ray launches completely fail.
- Agret, on 10/12/2007, -3/+39Even though the Gamecube didn't appear to be a huge success it was indeed one. It earnt Nitendo more money than the PS2 & XBOX earnt Sony & Microsoft respectively/
- NSMike, on 10/12/2007, -0/+20Sony only started making PROFITS on the PS2 about 3 years AFTER launch.
- hansamurai, on 10/12/2007, -1/+20There's a lot more to the Sony spiral than just the PS3, they have a huge laptop battery issue going on right now that's giving them horrible PR.
- TheBritishGuy1, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14Microsoft definitely does have the head up on all the other companies. Though as soon as Nintendo launches the Wii it'll be a close race. I consider the PS3 a wreck until they drop the blue-ray player. Personally, If i could chose between dropping a new DVD technology or at least making some money on a gaming device I would only risk one of the technologies.
- interiot, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12Sony most likely won't completely fail in the way Dreamcast did.... they were the winner last generation, they've at least got momentum to coast on. And Sony has shown that they're more than willing to burn through cash just to have a seat at the coffee table.
And even if Sony did drop out, I'm sure another console maker would pop up in its place... Apple? There's lots of companies who have lots of music/video content and would love to get a first chance at your eyeballs in the living room. - SpeckledJim, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13Aren't the Bravia panels made by Samsung?
- jonnyeh, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13But those products can't make up the HUGE shortfall due to the massive amounts of money already spent on the PS3.
- cjschmidt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10You don't have to be a fanboy to find the "console wars" interesting. The different marketing strategies, the social aspects, basic economics - all wrapped up in interesting products that a fair number of us will eventually purchase and use. The console wars and the intellegent discussion it inspires is fascinating. I enjoy reading about the Wii/PS3/360 and analyzing what's going on. That said, there are a lot of tards out there who just like to sit and bitch. They suck.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10I have profited quite well on my NTDOY since E3 myself, thanks Nintendo! Paid for my Wii, every launch game, my 360, and plenty of room foor that PS3 too...which I WON'T be purchasing. :)
- canewediggit, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11"How well a company does THIS quarter isn't effected by anticipation over a yet to be released product"
thanks for clearing up the fact you have no idea what you're talking about in the first sentence. - Goombellaofgoom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8And at $600 aren't they loosing like $200+ per unit? If they dropped the price further, Sony'd never make a profit. Sure, they'd sell tons more units if they charged $300-$400...
But then they'd be loosing $400+. On every unit. They'd never make that much back in profits from other stuff (games and accessories). - sakuraz, on 10/12/2007, -6/+13Size of Profit doesn't matter.
It's always about market. - FishyJoe, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8I purchased NTDOY and have already made over $1000, but I'm not going buy a PS3. I have bought a DS Lite however and will buy a Wii.
- techmonkey4u, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I have some shares too.
*does the happy dance*
Just wait til December. ;) I predict it's gonna shoot up some more. - gameboyhippo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I don't know. As an HDTV owner, I wasn't bummed that the Wii wasn't going to support 720p. I mean, as long as I get widescreen from my games (and I will), I'm happy. Last time I checked, most Nintendo games aren't so ultraphotorealistic (like a broadcasted football game) that HD should matter. IMHO, it doesn't.
- Redchannel, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7From what I know, nintendo has always been profatable at what they do. They are awsome at this
- |ant|, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10Perfect time to buy Sony stock. You heard it here.
- psg188, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7sony gets owned again, and @Wiinii, the wii is not a gamecube 1.5, its revolutionary... just making a more powerful system does not warrent "next-gen" its just..."more expensive gen"
Wii will truely take us to the next generation of gaming, just how the DS took handhelds to a whole new level
Graphics don't make the system... hence DS>PSP... case... and... point - horanghee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5does gameplay trump controllers or does that only work for graphics?
- MikeRaff, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Yep. And those kids along with a couple of tinsey winsey demographics like women and people over 40 might just buy enough Wiis to make Nintendo the top earning console.
- apoc06, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3http://www.hdtvlounge.net/hdtv-news/samsung-claims-its-lcd-hdtvs-better-than-sony-bravia/
both are made in the same joint venture plant. they could both have the exact same screen and parts for all we know, but its the engineering behind the product that differentiates it. - daridave, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5This news is great for us not because Nintendo needs to be #1, but because SONY needs to drop. Just like with the Ninty was acting pretty stupid with the N64, SONY is doing the same with the PS3. Time flows like a river and history repeats... SONY didn't do their homework, it seems, because they are repeating the same errors their competitors did when they were GIVEN the #1 spot in the market.
- BitBar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Sony and Microsoft think just throwing more expensive hardware into a console will somehow make it revolutionary.
Nintendo on the other hand knows there's a huge market of people who really don't give a damn about anisotropic filtering, bump-mapping and texel fill rate. All they want is fun game to play.
Sony and Microsoft rave about how their new systems are so great and wonderful and revolutionary with hardware almost as powerful as the top of the line PC from yesteryear.
Although I think all console systems have their ups and downs, I will not be surprised if Nintendo takes a big chunk of the market with a console system with a name which is a homophone for something you normally do in the bathroom. - Paroparo, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7Is this thing about Nintendo making more money than Sony with their previous console proven anywhere? I know Microsoft made huge losses with the Xbox, but haven't heard about Sony.
- Smwbigboss, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I think the increase is probably due to the sales of the DS lite. Sure alot of people are investing in Nintendo, but making profit also makes your price go up.
- apoc06, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2well, not to condone the behavior, but each consumer that is willing to purchase a PS3 is in fact making an investment. they are investing /at least/ $600US to buy the console and at least one game [not even accounting for the PS2 attach rate of ~12 or so games bought over the consoles' lifetime]. add to that amount the cost of an HDTV or a monitor to play on. extra peripherals [depending on the types of games you like to play]
no one likes to get caught with a losing system when it means that your "investment" won't pay off big later on during the consoles lifetime. you are investing money early on in good faith that the company will put out quality software during the consoles' lifetime - Ssj6Kirby, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6It would be pretty funny someone invested in NTDOY, made 600 dollars, and bought a PS3.
- psg188, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2why are you comparing your cell phone to the Wii, the Wii is powerful enough... just because it doesn't look as good doesn't mean it won't be as good a system...
and how come just cause I say sony gets owned again I get labeled a fan boy, is sony not getting owned repeatedly? the price, the new controller, the blue ray shortages, the release delays, the ps3 shortages on release..
its rediculous how much sony is suffering right now... - djdole, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1canewediggit,
Good dodging, bravo.
I'm amazed by how dense you present yourself as being.
You totally miss my blatantly obvious point.
The Nintendo stock and the Sony stock in this post are not traded on the same market.
NTDOY is traded in Japan; SNE is traded on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE).
Ntdoy can only be traded in local markets as PINK SLIPS, which are not the same as stocks, and should not be compared to them.
This blog-report is comparing apples to oranges. (Yes they are both fruit (traded), but they are not the same and shouldn’t be compared.)
Yes, the price is slightly affected by how TRADERS anticipate the WHOLE company to be doing, but changes in the hour to hour or day to day stocks price are NOT going to be due to internet fanboys anticipation of EITHER unreleased product.
So unless your name is Greenspan, canewediggit STFU.
Don't f’in try to claim you know ONE THING about what others are knowledgeable of. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2@Parokki
"Is this thing about Nintendo making more money than Sony with their previous console proven anywhere? I know Microsoft made huge losses with the Xbox, but haven't heard about Sony."
All the conventional wisdom about Nintendo is wrong. Read and be amazed: "How Nintendo is winning the console war":

http://nintendoinsider.com/site/EEEZuAypVuTuOJPzyb.php - psg188, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1stock reflects on the success of the company, if sony's stock goes down, I smile... cause they have lied and cheated me way to many times to get my respect
- Bloodwine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think the Xbox360 will go for the win this gen with Nintendo making a good comeback. Sony seems to be letting their egos get the better of them, just like Nintendo did back in the N64 days and look how well that turned out for Nintendo.
Get a Xbox360 for high-end graphics and a Wii for new-age controller action. Sony needs an ace up their sleeve to convince people that PS3 is the console to get. Seems that everytime I turn around Sony is announcing that they have cut features, pushed back release dates, cut back # of consoles at launch, etc. They are in no position to be so arrogant right now. - GT35R, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Why do you guys care how well one company is doing? If you want PS3, Xbox360, or Wii then buy it. Unless ur intrested in investing in one of the companies their stock value should really matter.

http://astore.amazon.com/cheapest-nintendo-wii-20 - aggrazel, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2You need to look at the big picture here. Sony's stock just got hit hard by the massive battery recall from Dell and Apple since Sony made the batteries and they're the ones taking the financial hit. On the other hand, DS sales are skyrocketing across the board. If anything Wii and PS3 speculation both will have investors concerned. It also has to do with debt, issued stock, etc. You can't guage a companies performance on stock price alone.
- Bibimbap, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0No *****, that woulda been the hype for the gba.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Wii is a next gen console.
(anyone who wants to say "no its not, its a NEW gen console, stfu) - cmiller1, on 10/12/2007, -6/+3Japanese companies have a tendency (more so than their brethren across the pond) to hold long-term business relationships (ie building a brand name that people trust) in much more importance than short term profits. Some common practices include selling items at a loss for years just so consumers relate your product with better quality for less money.
- thund3rstruck, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2
sony gets owned again
Good god... is everyone here 11 years old?
Perhaps the Wii is not GameCube v1.5 but we really need to calm the ferver and analyze the facts here. What creates a compelling gaming experience? My cell phone has an addictive tetris clone that's really fun to play. Just because its fun, does that make it next gen? Of course not. My PS1 and Dreamcast have some phenominal games that are fun to play but I never play them anymore. Why? The fact of the matter is that horsepower is at the core of the term "Next-Gen".
More horsepower means better graphics, artifical intelligence, increased complexity, and more open ended gaming. You cannot tell me that Next Generation is not about horsepower. Ultimately its true that developers will need to harness the strengths of the consoles to create compelling games but you can't turn a fiat into a farrari without changing the engine. The Wii appears to be a fiat where the XBOX360 and PS3 appear to be farraris. Now sony may build a faulty engine into it's firrari but its a farrari none-the-less.
I have absolutely no doubt in my mind that Nintendo is going to create some of the (if not the best) games on the Next Generation (as far as fun goes) but if it ends up where you look at Madden 07 on the XBOX360 next to Madden 07 on the Wii and the Wii version looks considerably worse, then that will be enough for many people to disregard the system as a system for kids (as with the GC). - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -7/+3Are you blind, or is your browser only showing the first part of what I said?
It's about balance. I too agree that more power and better graphics are not the DEFINITION of next-gen, but they too are part of it. But Nintendo has done little more than make a next-gen controller, and bet the bank on it alone.
Who here thinks that the Wii will be BETTER because it's graphics are not as good as the 360? I didn't think so. Any half-brain thinks they should have made it a bit more powerful and at least 720p capable.
I hate fanboys who can't grasp this, if I don't say Nintendo's ass doesn't stink then I am villified. - jsully, on 10/12/2007, -8/+4It should be worth pointing out that stock price is an insignificant statistic. For example, Microsoft's gaming division lost upwards of $4 Billion on the Xbox, but its stock has bested both Sony and Nintendo. The slew of stories coming about with regard to the next gen systems puts me off more than the $5/600 PS3 pricetag. Anyone else with me?
- canewediggit, on 10/12/2007, -9/+4there's nothing like nintendo paying for my wii. i'll be out by xmas, thanks!
- greish, on 10/12/2007, -11/+6It already damwell has, euro PS3 launch delayed March 2007. No PS3 No affordable Blue Ray player. HDDVD, XBox, WII win! Only thing theyve got are Bravias! Great!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -9/+2Someone has to say it, Wii should be $100 more and twice as powerful. Balance, a new controller is not in itself a good reason to make a GameCube 1.5.
- Agret, on 10/12/2007, -13/+6"Sony most likely won't completely fail in the way Dreamcast did.... they were the winner last generation, "
Nope, Nintendo were. They saw more profit than Sony or Microsoft (In the gaming devisions anyhow) - Agret, on 10/12/2007, -13/+5They do have other areas in the entertainment industry such as Sony Pictures & their line of TV's and Stereos
