- LucerinRed, on 10/12/2007, -2/+18speakers can be used as microphones, as ludicris as that sounds. i highly doubt the wiimote not having a mic somewhere
- astroid0, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16i love nintendo, but if you want to play first-sies.... MS probably planned it BEFORE they implemented, possibly several years before.
But, I remember using icq in the 90's, so IM kind of fails to impress me. I'm glad nintendo will have it, but it seems like an obligatory inclusion w/ online play - tafkase7en, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14Each wiimote has a speaker..not a mic.
- astroid0, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12a speaker can be = to a mic.
- Laxaloot, on 10/12/2007, -8/+17do you not know how to read? "(planned six years ago)" or maybe you don't know how to subtract... 2006-6=2000... the year 2000 did in fact occur before the year 2002
- rockintom99, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Psh. The Psp can pull up porn out of thin air, like magic!
- RHEEK, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Sounds Xfire-esque. It also sounds cool.
- h4lfl1ng, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7A low power electrical motor can be a speaker/mic. :P
- Sabin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7"Didn't Sony put in a patent for motion sensing in 1999?"
And didn't MS release the sidewinder freestyle pro in 1997 which had a solid state motion sensor? - EternalDarkWing, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I was also going to say it sounds like Xfire. I wonder if they will record your hours into your profile. That'd be pretty neat.
- karch, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Wow, digg for these two comments alone. I never knew that speakers were essentially the same as microphones.
- RichMan, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7How soon till the parents complain that adults are im'ing and talking to children using the "nintendo pedophile console?" lol
- xcalibre, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Imagine:
Wii Talk! - silverSurfer84, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I honestly dont think youll need a keyboard because Wii is using a version of Opera and Opera has voice recognition browsing. Voice and Wiimote is all you need for a good browsing experience.
- shinynew, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6saying that each remote has a mic i would say it would be less of IMing and more of speaking. Sounds like they could make it kind of like the steam friends list, maybe you can see what they are playing and IM them when they are playing.

"...microsoft was teh first to use this Xbox-livesqu feture Nintendo seems to be tacking on."
Not that it was the inventor of game-time messaging, but I was sending direct messages to people in Quake 2 Rocket Arena long before MS started their online service. Again, this is a public demand item, and Nintendo using some kind of messaging system is almost necessary.
"Ask any nintendo fanboy, thats all they care about is how "innovative" nintendo is with the controller that they didn't invent..."
They did invent their controller. Not the point of my post, but if you're comparing the clunky unpopular sidewinder to a blue tooth enabled, wireless, depth sensitive, audio output and hardware expansion capable remote, I laugh a little.
Messaging in gaming is a demand the public makes now-a-days. Can you imagine the uproar of both Nintendo and non-Nintendo fan boys if they didn't include a messaging option with a highly internet integrated system?
"Then why do people keep bringing up the fact that sony stole it's controller?"
It's obvious Sony only added the tilt sensitivity because of the Nintendo controller. It was a rushed project, and Sony has ALWAYS updated their hardware due to Nintendo changes/creative additions.
Seperate note, however, when I saw the Sony e3 Conference, I didn't feel they ripped off Nintendo as much as they simply reinvented the MS Sidewinder. - DrNoDoze, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2One of the few network/interweb applications that Nintendo built into the DS was a chat function. It seems like Nintendo has identified chat as a simple add on that hits their demographic well. I would not be surprised to see a "handwriting" style chat for the Wii similar tot he DS version.
- AmazingPaper, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2No it's called X-fire.
- theone3, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3laxaloot: *PLANNED* being the operative word...
- EvlD99, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@ prytz420
That is exactly what happens when a friend attempts to contact you on xbox live. A small popup appears with a ping noise. It doesn't interfere with the game at all. - Xoligy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3do you not know how to read? "(planned six years ago)" or maybe you don't know how to subtract... 2006-6=2000... the year 2000 did in fact occur before the year 2002
Well my time machine was planned 20 years ago. So anyone that makes one is merely copying me. - djruden, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It wouldnt be so bad using the Wiimote to point to letters as opposed to the old fashioned controls. Considering how much I (and probably others) use my cell phone to txt ppl, on screen keyboard with a Wiimote would be managable.
- ryanmetcalf, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4"Messaging service for video game systems with buddy list that displays game being played." don't they call this XBOX Live? Just with IM instead of voice?
- EvlD99, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You can use voice on Xbox Live in addition to IM. It works with chat and voice messages.
- StarManta, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It has USB, any standard keyboard will do.
- prytz420, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I guess it's more probable that you would only see a little message pop up in the corner or maybe just a little *pling*
- fliped, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Actually the speaker could be used as a mic... ive tried using headphones connected to the microphone jack and one of the headphone speakers actually turns into a mic.. and then connecting it to the headphone jack it acts as a speaker...
- RHEEK, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@silversurfer
This is a good point. - CornStarch, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5I hope they partner with Google talk. Their would be not stopping a Wii Google team.
- bennyboy371, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I guess I must be the only one who still loves only single player gaming. Well, at least for everything but first person shooters, thats too fun. But yeah, there are already too many IMs, I don't think having one on a console would be that great an idea.
- TheReport, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3"saying that each remote has a mic i would say it would be less of IMing and more of speaking"
Not necessarily, some people still prefer instant messageing over VoIP, hence why AIM still leads in the market for real time communication. - InsaneMachine, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I really hope that add-on keyboard will not be very expensive. It's painful typing with an on screen keyboard
- Ignitedude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Nintendo Wii Price And Release Date To Be Announced Before September.
http://sickr.wordpress.com/2006/06/07/nintendo-wii-price-and-release-date-before-september/ - Lane5slacker, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2So, you can now get the experience on being in a heated battle in a game then having it minimize because some moron whats to "just wanted to say Hi" on a console?
Just what I wanted - boomerxl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I was wondering when you'd show up.
- felyduw, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The problem with this is that the patent filed has tons of prior art. Another example of how the USPTO doesn't work.
Either way I always assumed such a service would be available, if you're playing games through the internet it's somewhat expected that you can communicate in some form or other with your counterparts. Not such a good article for it to make first page. It's just the power of the Wii !! eheh. - Thranduil, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Well, this one won't stand up to review, since there is _way_ too much prior art. Remember, the issue isn't when Nintendo started planning the idea; it is the date on the patent that counts. And they seem to be a few ... umm ... years too late.
- NicP, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It would be really cool if the wii had apple bonjour support, so that you could play shared video and music from itunes (or other clients that support bonjour sharing) on another computer.
- vileS, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Microsoft didn't invent instant messaging, and neither did nintendo, but they are well appreciated features. Since when does every addition to a console have to be innovative and fresh? Can't some things just be added due to a logical demand? Next thing you know people are going to start getting defensive about power buttons since they're on, like, every system every created, omg, wowz.
- khyberkitsune, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Messaging service for video game systems with buddy list that displays game being played."
I thought Gamespy and Heat.NET did this in like, 96-97? - Angelus2k6, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Jeez enough with the PS3 copied Nintendo on motion sensing. At the end of the day if they actually copied it would be a patent infringement so they didn't copy. However what they did do was fail to respond to what gamers wanted they want a new gaming experience which nintendo adapted into there controller. What Sony did was just react to Nintendo's idea. The tech has been around for ages they just didn't know that gamers wanted it now they know but can they actaully make good games from it I doubt sony can with there tilt thing...
- boomerxl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Sony also lost a lot of credibility by mocking Nintendo when they announced the Wiimote; then turning around and incorporating a tilt sensor into their controller. For the record, I'm a Nintendo fan. But it needs to be said that Sony did not copy Nintendo, nor did Nintendo invent motion sensing technology. What Nintendo did do was bring several disparate technologies together into a well conceived and rounded package. Sony seemed to have just tacked it on as a response. It'd be like Microsoft announcing Xbox360's new Blu-ray drive.
- TheBrandman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah, maybe you can sketch out your letters on screen or point to a virtual keyboard. Can anyone say for sure that a USB keyboard will work in the Wii?
- vtequine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Sounds interesting although I feel if I want to instant message people I will use my normal desktop/laptop computer and when I'm ready to play some Twilight Princess I'll go on over to my Wii...I would prefer to keep them seperate, but I won't complain if they have that sort of feature.
- se1zure, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2"Microsoft didn't invent instant messaging, and neither did nintendo"
Nintendo didn't invent motion sensing.... They are just the first to use it in a console successfully, like microsoft was teh first to use this Xbox-livesqu feture Nintendo seems to be tacking on.
"Since when does every addition to a console have to be innovative and fresh?"
Ask any nintendo fanboy, thats all they care about is how "innovative" nintendo is with the controller that they didn't invent, but when they blatantly rip from microsoft (or, if you wanna get technical, then AIM, MSN, IRC, XFire, etc.) its just fine and dandy.
"Can't some things just be added due to a logical demand?"
It was obvious to see that motion sensing was popular when Nintendo released it, so logical demand would tell sony to do the same.. Then why do people keep bringing up the fact that sony stole it's controller?
"Next thing you know people are going to start getting defensive about power buttons since they're on, like, every system every created"
Only nintendo fanboys get defensive about that stuff... "OMGzzZz, teh 360 has da ringz of light, and da Wii totalYz ripped it! OMGZzzzzZ!" - zengonzo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1
Except that they used their time machine to go even further back and give the plans to their previous selves.
You can't trump someone with a time machine, buddy. - Battousai, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Sounds a lot like what Warp Pipe (for GameCube, by a third party) does, but with the added functionality of actually providing instant messaging service.
- Clbck, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Or the Steam friends list.
- UNL1M1T3D, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Very nice way to keep track when playing with friends online. I am excited.
- dreadstar, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Could Nintendo use this to squeeze a ton of royalties out of Microsoft?
