- coheedcollapse, on 10/12/2007, -0/+28Why can't we just plug our own keyboards in? The damn thing has a USB port, how hard would it be to enable keyboard input?
I just know damn well I'm not going to run out and pay $50 or whatever it will be for a Wii keyboard if I can just use my computer to do the same thing. - motang, on 10/12/2007, -0/+21Makes sense considering they want people to surf the web on the Wii. Although I would prefer to hook up my own USB one, or have a support for any bluetooth keyboard.
- nickbender, on 10/12/2007, -3/+23you mean people can type on their keyboard faster than they can wave their wiimote around?
who knew? - jun2san, on 10/12/2007, -5/+22They're calling it the Wii Key Pedia.
- blahtastic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17Yeah they could give us a quick and easy free usb or bluetooth update and we could have our own nice wireless, full-size, multi-use (pc and wii and 360 and ps3 (I don't know that for sure, as Idon't have a ps3)) keyboard, ooooooor, they could charge us $40-50 for a battery draining wiimote attachment. Which do you think we'll get? ;)
- seandfeeney, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14I GOT IT! I GOT IT! why not make a wireless bluetooth keyboard!
I am a freakin' genius! - chad78, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13Wow, Nintendo. That's a brillant idea! You make a gaming system that can surf the web out of the box, equip it with WiFi, BlueTooth, and USB ports, and then, a while later, lightning strikes, the heavens open, and a EUREKA! moment occurs. This thing needs a Keyboard!
Next thing you know - they may give it a mouse! - Shando, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10I seriously doubt it's getting a mouse. The whole thing about the Wiimote is that it's a pointing device
- charlescheese, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10I'd be happy if they just fixed the wii so that the web browser worked properly via 480p widescreen on most HDTV's.
- yaroze, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10@djsyndrome, 360 does support USB Keyboard, in fact I used the usb keyboard from my PS2 Linux Kit to setup my live account info on my 360.
- blahtastic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8The 360 does in fact accept 360 keyboards, I've used mine. The messages (and signing up for my live account, for that matter) would be damn near impossible without it. Give it a shot if you have one, plugs into any of its usb ports.
--ah, beaten by a second, lol - samadam, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Yeah, this should take a software writer a couple days to do. Bluetooth keyboard interface. Done. They don't even have to make one, just let the 3rd party makers do it.
- Recoil, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I'm glad Nintendo is aware of the need for this. The keyboard should only be about two thirds (maybe less) the size of a regular desktop keyboard and either be wireless or plug into the wii remote. They could offer a DS-based keyboard for users who don't want to go out and buy the keyboard. You just get it through DS Download Play and you're all set to type with your stylus.
- grumbel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6ACK, especially since Bluetooth and USB are already in place, there is really no need to "look into keyboard peripheral", they just need to supply us with a proper driver.
- superpixel, on 10/12/2007, -5/+10Yeah, Nintendo, way to catch a clue. Anyone who has spent 10 minutes trying to type letters in Animal Crossing could explain this to a goat-- keyboards are for typing. Do they really need some stupid exploratory committee? Yutzes. Just do it!
- wilem, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Why not just release a software patch to allow Bluetooth keyboards? Also, add a patch to allow USB hard drives or let me save my VC games on my memory stick so I can actually download some more.
- ooMissioNoo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3for easier web surfing, or more money for nintendo
- blahtastic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I'm pretty sure it keeps track of what you loaded. So you can delete them if you fill up, and then load them back without paying again. It would be a bit annoying if you play all your games on a regular basis though.
- Cyber_Akuma, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I would love to see how Nintendo manages to explain the need of having an overpriced Nintendo brand keyboard instead of just allowing us to plug in a damn USB keyboard like the PS2, PS3 and Xbox360 allows us to.
- leetleo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I personally have no problem surfing the web with the wiimote. It's not like I'm doing anything beyond watching videos in the living room with my friends. Personally, I'd like them to focus on making the browser compatible with more video/audio/web formats, rather than sell me a keyboard I'll likely never have any use for.
- iwanttodiggthis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I own a Samsung DLP HDTV and a Nintendo Wii. The web browser works perfectly and I have never once had a problem. You should delete the existing beta version of the web browser, download the production version, and run it.
Of course, I only visit standards-compliant web sites that properly scale to meet my needs. Perhaps you should write letters to your favourite webmasters urging their compliance with W3C standards. - shaun1018, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Come on Wii-board
- bobpaul, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@blahtastic
Not to mention the extra wear on the 512mb internal flash. - Asianwaste, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2No Wii pun for the name? Like the "Wii-Board"?
- gaijintendo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Excellent news in light of the announcement of Typing of the Dead 2!!
- josegutz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1All I know is that I want a piano tie like Mike Damone's
- ZeroMP, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah I got to play with a prototype they were developing. It was cool except that there was no enter key, you had to shake it up and down instead...
I'm kidding.
I own a Wii.
Love it. - Izzio, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I already have a wireless Bluetooth keyboard, and a USB keyboard, so I hope they don't consider a proprietary one, although the homebrew community could always hack the drivers for the proprietary one later. I don't see why everyone is so quick to assume that support for a keyboard peripheral automatically means that they would be the only manufacturer allowed to make such a thing. I could see other companies doing something like this, but Nintendo has been pretty good about not restricting us or ripping us off with things like that, for example releasing all the new channels for free, and using the SD card instead of a proprietary memory card format.
- shaun1018, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Double post...
Digg me down : ( - aywwts4, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2The wii does have built in bluetooth, and I don't like sitting anywhere near my television, or being tethered to my wii, and the wii philosophy has basically been wirelessness from the ground up. So I'm going to bet you aren't far from the mark.
- shit, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Another cool thing about using a USB keyboard on the Xbox 360 is that you can also navigate menus with it. It's nice not having to swap between keyboard and controller if you're sending a message.
- iwanttodiggthis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wii is pretty much the Digg of video game consoles.
- Cyber_Akuma, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I thought that and the golf one are PC only games?
- iwanttodiggthis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I wouldn't recommend that. Standard Bluetooth keyboards take up extraordinary amounts of power and have severe security liabilities. Nintendo can do better.
- dcharti, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4I smell a 'Worlds Fastest Wii Typer' award coming on.
- Flummoxer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wtf, why would you want a motion sensing keyboard?
- iwanttodiggthis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Smells like Super Mario Bros. cereal and Pocky.
- Asianwaste, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Ahh Nintendo Breakfast system. Two identically flavored cereals in one. The only cereal with so much sugar, you can power a small country with electricity from one bowl. It was ADD and milk in a bowl.
- Recoil, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Um... why would you need a mouse to go with the keyboard? The Wiimote already is the mouse.
- djSyndrome, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4I sold my 360 last winter and they didn't work then. Glad to know that's changed, and I'm happy to stand corrected :)
- retard75, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah I knew it. It was only time since it makes the most sense.
And the thing is, I seen people saying things about Nintendo making people buy a special keyboard, since the other systems making standard USB keyboard available...but even if they did, It probably wouldn't be expensive, plus they're are not charging you 3 times over for a system so it wouldn't be that bad. If a system is 600 dollars, the least the could is making it so you don't have to buy as many accessories and spend more money.
It will probably be something where you get Nintendo keyboard and mouse and then a month later they will have cheaper brand accessories. - Korexz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Umm.. you can put your games on the SD card. You cannot play them from the SD card, but you can back them up there so you don't have to re-download.
Being that memory card management is almost unnecessary on the Wii you probably just didnt see the menu. - MillenniumX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yeah; typing with my Wii is just too much of a hunt-and-poke affair right now. I do much better typing with both hands on a keyboard.
- dncnyoyo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I would be happy if it was faster than a dial-up connection.
- bufar, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Who here would be pissed if they announced DS connectivity instead? Raise you hand!
Keep 'em up! Now, who would be pissed if you could only use your DS as a Wiiboard?
Thought so.
_________
Just saying that its feasible. Knowing Nintendo, It's plausible. - iwanttodiggthis, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11. Motion sensing. USB keyboards don't support motion sensing.
2. Microphone. Ditto.
3. Speaker. Ditto.
For $50, this is the keyboard for me. - Adampalooza, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0nope. not so much. it's not like there are achievements like xbox.
- Vistrix, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Sounds nice...
But me paying for a browser to surf the web? Thats never gonna happen. - fizgigtiznalkie, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I have a launch console and setup my XBL account with a USB keyboard the day I got it, djsyndrome you don't know what you're talking about.
- djSyndrome, on 10/12/2007, -7/+5@blahtastic: ATM, the 360 does not support USB keyboards. That may or may not change with the messaging features coming soon. The PS3 accepts USB and Bluetooth keyboards natively, although not all games support the input (i.e., Virtua Fighter 5's name or comment entry system does not).
Knowing Nintendo's history, the chances of them enabling USB keyboard support are just this side of zero. Remember, this is the same company that invented third-party licensing fees and regional lockouts. -
