- monkeyrun, on 01/07/2009, -6/+43Gimmick or not, Wii and DS are defying recession.
- fuckupedoslut, on 01/07/2009, -4/+37I'm not surprised. Say what you want about the Wii, that its not "hardcore" enough or doesn't have the best games, but they've helped secure the future of the video gaming industry by creating a system that almost everyone can enjoy. Nuthin' wrong with that!
- wedges, on 01/07/2009, -10/+38my roommate got a wii. then i said "awesome, let's get a bunch of games!" alas, there is almost nothing worth playing.
- ghuytro, on 01/07/2009, -3/+28Your Jergens lotion dispenser?
- jenrique7, on 01/07/2009, -5/+28If you're a real gamer you appreciate any good game, on any system.
- pinserz, on 01/07/2009, -6/+26microsoft still won't even recognize the wii as a direct competitor
i love my 360, but common.. - whatsoncemore, on 01/07/2009, -1/+15Did they make those pie charts in Microsoft Paint?
- krahzee, on 01/07/2009, -1/+13With the rest of us: Waiting for Starcraft 2
- wedges, on 01/07/2009, -11/+22if you're the type of person that likes Gears of War or Resistance, there is nothing for you on Wii.
- inkswamp, on 01/08/2009, -1/+11Oh god. Here comes the whining. "The Wii isn't hardcore so it sucks. Nyah!"
Yeah, how's that game called The Red Ring of Death? I hear that's pretty hardcore. - HunterKiller, on 01/07/2009, -26/+36To hell with those people that call the Wii a "gimmick."
- jasmus, on 01/07/2009, -0/+9It would be impossible to accurately put a number on gaming PC's. How would you define a gaming PC as apposed to an office pc, or graphic design pc, or rendering pc?
- funnygreen, on 01/08/2009, -8/+17what did Nintendo do when they reached #1, release no good games and let it sit on the shelf to collect dust.
- archer104, on 01/08/2009, -1/+10You've never played drunken wii tennis with a bunch of friends then.
- aurorous, on 01/08/2009, -4/+12Ok for all you people complaining about the lack of Wii games and too stupid to actually do any research or read a review here's Joystiq's top 10 Wii games of 2008. If you can't find anything on this list you like then your incapable of liking anything except "post-apocalyptic shooter 17".

BONUS: only 3 of the games are Nintendo 1st party titles. - dandonia, on 01/08/2009, -5/+13Why do you assume that people can't like more than one genre?
- wedges, on 01/07/2009, -8/+16...has great titles like Resistance 2, LittleBigPlanet, Metal Gear Solid 4, Uncharted, and many more titles including most of the great multiplatform games.
- Quaterni0n, on 01/08/2009, -0/+8The two markets overlap slightly, but they're right: The Wii isn't a "direct" competitor. Just compare the game libraries for both systems.
- bacon_skoda, on 01/08/2009, -1/+8he must have very good skin.
- wedges, on 01/07/2009, -2/+9but this is VGChartz, not ZGChartz. surely they can't both be inaccurate.
- dandonia, on 01/08/2009, -0/+7That's like saying networks aren't competing for viewers because they run different shows on the same night House (medical drama) against How I Met Your Mother (comedy). As if Hugh Laurie isn't a comic legend. I love both shows so they are competing for people like me.
Bottom line if I have £40 per month to spend on games - I couldn't care less if the game I buy is Nintendo, Sony, Microsoft or PC. I don't care if it's a digital download or on physical media. I don't care if it's Sports, Action, Beatem Up, Platform, Retro, Strategy, Sandbox, Racing, etc All I care about is that it is going to be fun. - jenrique7, on 01/07/2009, -9/+16To each his own. But there's no denying Nintendo's power now. Great to see innovation triumph.
I tend to play more my 360 than my Wii because of Live, and because I play Wii for the hardcore games (Galaxy, Okami, Prime 3, World of Goo, etc) which are not that many. I consider both consoles great at what they do though.
PS3 on the other hand.... - frygar, on 01/08/2009, -0/+7PROTIP: Don't make your avatar characters look identical to the ones your competition came up with two years prior. It just makes your console look uninspired and lame.
- inactive, on 01/07/2009, -5/+12Third Party games sucking isn't the fault of Nintendo. Look at the Wii's first party software sales.
- bustaballs, on 01/08/2009, -1/+8I could name you a good 30 disc games that are excellent. Then I could name you at least 5 decent WiiWare titles. Then I could name you a dozen more great games coming out next year. My point is, you're wrong.
- imdidactic, on 01/08/2009, -0/+6No not WiiMusic or WiiFit. Those are Nintendo titles. By third party I mean titles from other companies like Acclaim and Capcom. Also it's the fault of third party developers too who use the accelerometer as a gimmic.
- inactive, on 01/07/2009, -1/+7Looks like Excel.
- fuckupedoslut, on 01/08/2009, -2/+8I found them enjoyable enough in Super Mario Galaxy, and that sentiment sounds like sour grapes when you consider the XBOX and PS are stuck on controllers and haven't moved on. The fact of the matter is, we're moving beyond controllers (like remotes) and moving on to more user friendly means of interacting: ie touch screens (another area Nintendo has explored, with the DS). I think I lot of people found it motion control to be less intimating than using a button and D pad system on a controller. That was a smart move on their part in bringing video games to a wider audience that might have otherwise been uninterested because of their own reluctance to take on what they view as a complicated piece of technology.
At the very least, it was a fantastic business move. They got our grannies playing Wii Sports and meanwhile, my PS3 is most often used for its blue ray player, and I've had to repair my XBOX 360's RROD two times already. - frygar, on 01/08/2009, -1/+7That's funny. I don't think Nintendo recognizes Microsoft as a competitor!
50 million consoles SOLD vs. 26 million SHIPPED
OWNED. - ThatGeek, on 01/07/2009, -6/+11they are making more money than you right now
- fuckupedoslut, on 01/08/2009, -2/+7Idle threats...that'll show 'em! You don't like motion control so you're going to go PC, where you'll be playing with....a MOUSE, one of the original forms of motion control? Or the older keyboard strafe buttons? And this is going to be easier....how?
- Samo89, on 01/07/2009, -4/+9christ they have like 50% right there
- Poochy818, on 01/07/2009, -7/+11Congrats to Nintendo. That being said, my Wii sits on the shelf unplayed, collecting dust. They haven't put out a worthwhile game for it in awhile. Not trying to hate (Wii is the only next-gen system I own), but the system is turning into a huge disappointment for me, especially with the huge price drops for the PS3 and 360.
- Andreeew, on 01/08/2009, -0/+4@both of you.
Keyboard and mouse > Analog stick
That said, Who the ***** cares? I'll play my games. You play yours. - inactive, on 01/08/2009, -0/+4Third parties always tend to fare worse on Nintendo consoles because they have to directly compete with Nintendo first-party titles which are usually very high quality and sell for less.
- rknowles10, on 01/08/2009, -1/+5Yes, I admit the Wii has tons of shovelware....like PS1 levels of shovelware almost.
..But there are also a good number of pretty excellent Wii titles, such as:
Super Mario Galaxy
Zelda: Twilight Princess
Super Paper Mario
Metriod Prime 3
Okami (remake)
No More Heroes
World of Goo (WiiWare)
Sin and Punishment (Virtual Console N64 release, previously not released in North America)
Mario Kart Wii
Smash Bros. Brawl
Resident Evil 4: Wii Edition (remake)
Boom Blox
Zack & Wiki
..and if you're someone like me who only really has 2-3 hours a day at most on week days to play games, that's more than enough when the system's only been out a couple years. But then again, I was the type that didn't mind the N64 release schedule either...so maybe I'm a freak. - darienphoenix, on 01/08/2009, -8/+12If you're a console gamer you're already less 'hardcore' than PC gamers, so you might as well get over yourself and admit the Wii is a damn fun system.
- kingmanic, on 01/08/2009, -0/+4Slip of the finger. #1 is what i meant.
- xprojects, on 01/07/2009, -2/+6The PC isn't a game console.
- inkswamp, on 01/08/2009, -0/+4> Wow, what an articulate case against
> the other consoles.
Every bit as articulate as the case against the Wii.
> How about the fact I had to send my wii back to nintendo
> after 2 months because it stopped reading discs.
When that has happened to a million other Wii owners (some of them repeatedly) then get back to me. I work with a guy whose XBox has died three times now.
> That might get swept under the rug by you fanatical
> support of the Wii,
I have no fanatical support for the Wii or any game console. I just find this knee-jerk denunciation of the Wii on Digg to be weirdly amusing enough that I'll willingly take up the opposing side. - Gizza, on 01/08/2009, -0/+4Did a quick google search but couldn't find much. But based off these,
http://news.softpedia.com/images/news2/Low-Discret ...
http://www.tgdaily.com/content/view/30466/118/
we can see that there are around 20 million discrete graphics card sold per quarter in 2008. Most people buying discrete graphics cards would be doing so to upgrade or turn their machine into one they can game on. So that's close to 100 million gaming machines bought in 2008. Which is about the same as all the console hardware sales combined. - casbar, on 01/07/2009, -0/+4It's there but the sliver is too small to label.
- imdidactic, on 01/08/2009, -0/+4I used to program for the Wii and went to the Wii Summit this year where they had a lecture on accelerometer programming. I agree with it being assumption based, which is why broad movements like the ones in Wii Sports work. Nintendo understands this, but the problem is that most third party developers don't. Too often they are programming accelerometer input to replace analog joystick moves (I think Tony Hawk is a good example of this) without giving the player the option of traditional input through the classic controller. IMO, this is why most third party Wii games aren't fun and why sales are so low.
- doshindude, on 01/08/2009, -0/+4Waiting for Duke Nukem Forever and Starcraft 2. Face it, your "console" just doesn't compare.
- fuckupedoslut, on 01/08/2009, -0/+4Waiting for Diablo 3, and biding my time with Diablo 2 LOD, thanks.
- Ashkc88, on 01/08/2009, -1/+5Actually, if you have played any of those games you'd know they don't have "clumsy, convoluted controls" nor "bad graphics (or terrible graphics)." Lost Winds is a good example of how you can make good use of the Wii's controller.
Also Wiifanboy, PS3fanboy, and Xbox360fanboy are all owned by Game Daily.
It's funny how all of the people who sold their Wiis are in denial and are desperate to make things up just to justify selling their Wii.
I own more good Wii titles than I do PS3 titles. - wedges, on 01/08/2009, -0/+4VR 3D will not happen any time soon, but they really need to do something about the 16 digit code friend system.
- inactive, on 01/08/2009, -1/+5Nice Excel charts. Geez, could you put any LESS effort into your presentation?
- jake1337, on 01/08/2009, -1/+5*come on
- dekuscrub, on 01/08/2009, -1/+4The problem is, in today's market nobody wants to make games for just one system. With the Xbox and PS3 it is easy to cross over games. The controllers aren't THAT different.
But who wants to pour tons of money into a Wii title when they can't port the game to another system because it doesn't use motion controls? -
