Nintendo earnings reveal an unstoppable gaming juggernaut
arstechnica.com — Nintendo has been riding on top of the sales charts for a while now in the US, but the company's earning statements show a nearly bullet-proof international business, with stronger than expected game sales.

- sanman, on 04/26/2008, -0/+1I play Wii boxing 4-5 times a week, and I love it. It's hard for me to play it more often than that, because otherwise my arms get too sore. But if I could, I would. I just fight non-stop without any pauses or breaks, until I've passed 1500 (mostly I lose to that guy Matt with the silver gloves). Gives me pretty good cardio, I must say.
I wish Nintendo or somebody would come out with an adventure/action game that uses the Wii boxing fighting style, so that I could explore some interesting environments while punching the crap out of opponents.

- acedigger, on 04/25/2008, -4/+9They are sooooo lucky they came out with Wii. It made them relevant again.
- Ashkc88, on 04/26/2008, -1/+13The Gamecube was/is underrated. I played/liked it more than my Xbox, despite the Xbox having Live. The GC had a ton of good games such as Paper Mario, Viewtiful Joe 1+2, Zelda: The Wind Waker, Zelda: Twilight Princess, Resident Evil 0+1+2+3+4, Eternal Darkness, Metroid Prime + Echoes, Animal Crossing, Mario Sunshine, F-Zero GX, Pikmin 1+2, Mario Kart: Double Dash, Metal Gear Solid, and Super Smash Bros. That's just off of the top of my head without going to look for them, I know there are a ton more. On my Xbox, I just played Halo 1+2, Splinter Cell, Fable, Crimson Skies, Psychonauts and a few others I cannot think of right now.
Sure, some may say some of those games suck or are childish...but I doubt anyone who thinks that have actually played the games. They are all good solid games, despite what biased reviewers think.
By the way, people bitch about the Windwaker being so different, yet they bitch about Twilight Princess being non-original. People also bitch about Mario Sunshine and Mario Kart: Double Dash for being different. Then we hear complaints about Nintendo making the same games over and over again. What gives?- BlueSkyfish, on 04/26/2008, -2/+1I don't think they're all the same people, though. The people who complained about Wind Waker being different probably loved Twilight Princess. You can't please everybody.
- Lane, on 04/26/2008, -0/+2Holy crap, I'm going to a pawn shop and or ebay and picking one up!
- whataboutdave, on 04/26/2008, -0/+3Luck has nothing to do with it. It was an intentional stroke of genius.

- SquareEnix, on 04/25/2008, -1/+11and to think this time two years ago, everyone was planning to write them off...
- NecroSexy, on 04/25/2008, -0/+11Arstechnica just bitch-slapped the New York Times.
- ichbeineinrcg, on 04/26/2008, -4/+2Unstoppable? The list of companies that were seemingly inassailable and fell by the wayside is long indeed.
- cheappop, on 04/26/2008, -2/+4But most don't have a 20 year proven track record.
- LaminatedParrot, on 04/26/2008, -3/+6Nintendo are starting to annoy me. They continue to alienate the hardcore gaming market with their stubbornness .
- whataboutdave, on 04/26/2008, -0/+2Nintendo's laughing all the way to the bank. As loud as hardcore gamers are, they only buy so much each generation.
- sanman, on 04/26/2008, -0/+2Exactly, just like how hardcore computer geeks made fun of the mouse and of GUI-based software when they first came out ("real techies have keyboarding skillz"), but the rest of the world sucked in the mouse and GUIs, so that became a runaway hit.

- smacksaw, on 04/26/2008, -2/+7And yet people will still insist that no one buys games for their Wii, Barack Obama is a Muslim and you can't play games on Linux.
- carpespasm, on 04/26/2008, -0/+9They need to spend some of those earnings building a better online system and building some long-term new franchises.
- Nidis, on 04/26/2008, -0/+6As long as it goes back into developing quality gaming, I'm happy.
- kweeky, on 04/26/2008, -0/+8Just goes to show how a little innovation can go a long way.
- Alexio, on 04/28/2008, -1/+1They definitely get it as a business. It's plain to see that they do very little that is risky and unlikely to make a profit (their hardware always makes a profit and they stick with their software franchises for example) and at the same time they capture millions of "non-gamers" which of course is like striking gold.
At the same time, this means we're unlikely to see many new IP's because of the risk factor involved for Nintendo. What was the last one, Pikmin?- Anon5, on 04/28/2008, -0/+2They do very little that is risky? What about the implementation of the Wiimote in the first place? The Wii itself was basically one gigantic risk, an all or nothing proposition for Nintendo.
- easy4lif, on 04/28/2008, -0/+1I've order Mario Kart Wii (Arrives today) Wii Fit, Star wars: TFU, Lego batman and that on top of the 6 other games I own. I personally don't think its a system for hardcore gamers, its a system made for casual to new gamers.
and thats why it rocks!
