- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+20Aw, do you not have a Wii yet?
- Edrick, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18Isn't that a page from..uh, any large corporation's playbook?
- sucks, on 10/12/2007, -3/+20good, but Nintendo should get back together with Square. They were such a cute couple.
- MouseCircus, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17Tri-Crescendo was actually the main developer behind Baten Kaitos.
Monolith Soft mainly did "graphic and scenario" work.
Monolith Soft is more widely known as the developer behind the Xenosaga series. They're also the developer working on Disaster: Day of Crisis, although Disaster is rumored to be cancelled.
Personally, I think this was a very good move by Nintendo. Monolith are well established and are good at what they do. Not only that, but they have close ties to Tri-Crescendo(Baten Kaitos, Eternal Sonata(Trusty Bell)) and Tri-Ace(Star Ocean), so it's quite possible that they may also release their own Wii projects in the future. Although that's entirely speculation on my part. - artemus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12I agree. They've been a lacking a good second party presence since the days of the N64. What they need to do is make strong second party acquisitions that strongly believe in Nintendo's design philosphies. An acquisition like this can only mean good things for Nintendo in the future. Good job, guys.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13RPGs are about the story mainly. Thats why people still play Dragon Warrior, Final Fantasies, and Zeldas.
They aren't ultra realistic, but they had a depth to them no graphics could make any better. - onidraky, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11All the best RPGs ever made were on Super Nintendo and the original Playstation. Real good RPGs don't need good graphics.
- Ace25, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11And how is that any different than MS or Sony? It is the nature of the business.
- Itazura, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9No actually it isn't the same company, this is Monolith Soft, not Monolith Productions which made Blood.
- DracoLord, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Disaster might be cancelled? Any good reason why? I was looking forward to that game :(
- dadioflex, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Just for those folks, like me, who got confused by this - this isn't the Monolith that did FEAR and NOLF. That's Monolith Productions. Referred to in the article is Monolith Software from Japan (obviously).
- Diggtatorship, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Factor 5 was never anyone's second party. They just pick a platform that they like and then develop exclusively for that platform, rinse and repeat.
Last gen it was gamecube, this gen its the PS3, next gen.... Who knows... - kakwakas, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I don't see why the writer of the article goes on about Xenosaga fans being upset. Monolith already announced that they've canceled the series a while ago...
- Mrstupid7, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Fighting games are minigames strung together with a flimsy story.
- Xelseragoth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5And Factor 5 isn't and never was a second party, they just seemed to have loyalty to Nintendo. Until recently, that is.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Unfortunately Microsoft bought Rare (Goldeneye, DK Country, etc). Factor 5 (Rogue Squadron series) seems silent, and Retro (Metroid Prime) is gearing up MP3 this fall. Factor5 and Retro are great second parties but do not develop nowhere near fast enough to keep up.
- Zephkiel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4They choose the most powerful system at the time when they need to develop a game. At the time of the GameCube, it was GC vs. PS2. This time it's the PS3 that's most powerful.
- PueSi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Earthbound and Final Fantasy VI are my favorite RPGs of all times even though they're SNES games.
- Jinno, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I really don't see why you're creating such a big fuss. If you thought the game was beautiful before, what difference does it make that it's not on the 360 or PS3? Nintendo needs a company that can bring out titles consistently that are taking advantage of every little bit of the Wii, while also providing the quality that Nintendo chooses to show.
The Wii was never touted as a behemoth of gaming sexitude. It's the cheaper console, with motion sensing technology, and fun, innovative titles. Nintendo isn't going to turn their head away from it, and like the DS, it's not going away. It's doing innovative things, and developers are going to need to learn that they will be better off supporting Nintendo in their endeavors, rather than dumping port after port on the console.
The Wii has been given the unfair early niche as the party console, but I think that LOZTP is an example that it can be much more than that for your average gamer. - 1iProd, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7Yess!!! The wii just gets better and better.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5I'd rather see information like this rather then stupid ***** like the Nintendo ping-pong ball table or the Mario RC racer
- offspring06, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Monolith Software did not make FEAR. Monolith Productions are the developers behind FEAR and the Lithtech engine.
- ArmandoM, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2My god... it's full of stars...
- icealchemist, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I am pretty sure Bandai-Namco owns the rights to the Xenosaga IP, so i doubt Monolith Soft will be making any Wii versions. It will probably be all new IPs.
- enforcerpsu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Being that this is the developer of the xenosaga series, I think Nintendo made a great move. Those RPGs were excellent and a nice departure from the Final Fantasy series.
- fantasticFlan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Zelda's action/adventure with some RPG elements.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Hell no
N.O.L.F 1 was VERY easy, even on the hardest of difficulties
sure you'll quick load just because you could have done something different, but its nowhere near insanely difficult
(I also just went back and started a new game about a week ago, put it on the hardest difficulty and beat it with ease)
Personally I really didn't like N.O.L.F 2.., I think they strayed to much from the goodness of N.O.L.F 1
having things like the skill system, improved graphics and voice acting, search system and gadget use made the game better, but I still think N.O.L.F 1 was better because of the cut-scene use, longer and better story, for being FAR more funnier then N.O.L.F 2, better weapons and gadgets and just plain fun, choosing equipment and such before each mission made the game feel more exciting and challenging, I was upset that N.O.L.F 2 had not included anything like that
/rant - MisterCookie, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I'm a Xenosaga fan, and I'm happy with this development. If we're lucky, we might see a few more sequels now that they'll have a major Nintendo boost.
- MouseCircus, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3So the graphics are what make a game have "value" to you? If that's the case, then please, by all means, stick with the 360 and the PS3.
No one is forcing you to like the Wii. No one is forcing you to play games on the Wii. Seriously, don't bother if that's your stance. I don't know why the hell you even own a Wii if that's how you feel. No game whatsoever will ever be worth the $50 for you. You might as well sell it.
I don't understand why people act as if though Nintendo lied to everyone with the Wii. It's not a technological powerhouse. We get it. There's PLENTY of platforms providing all sorts of different things to consumers. If one isn't your cup of tea, then move to another one.
And Monolith claim to be done with the Xenosaga series. If Disaster: Day of Crisis has been cancelled, then I'm assuming Nintendo will allow Monolith to begin work on an entirely new IP. - THEMACGOD, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Does this mean no Condemned 2? DAMMIT.
- OneBallJ, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3The first one was insanely hard but the sequel was down right awesome, best multi-player story line extension I've ever seen
- Klarth, on 10/12/2007, -5/+5Zelda? About the story? The series doesn't have a bad story by any stretch of the imagination, but I don't know anyone who likes the series for anything other than the gameplay.
FF isn't really story-centric anymore. Most of the series' recent installments focus on FMV and pressing X a lot. - coheedcollapse, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3I still play old RPG's all the time. I absolutely love them all and I grew up on them, but as much as I love RPG's with old graphics I'm totally not willing to pay $50 for a game with the graphics of a game that I can pick up from the bargain bin of some software store for like $10. Especially with the sheer amount of really great RPG's that came out on the PS2.
Right now I'm in between re-beating FF6, playing Vagrant Story on the PSX and Final Fantasy Tactics, but they're from my old collection or roms.
Yes, yes, I know, it's blasphemy to say that you're not enthralled by every damn aspect of the Wii and apparently since I care about the technical aspects of a console, I'm a graphics whore but right now I'm not willing to sacrifice a beautiful game with a great story for a game with cool controls and a great story.
You people act like it's impossible to make a great game without the Wii controls or something. - Coffeedemon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Monolith is actually relevant to the RPG genre now? News to me....
Can the Wii even run a current version of the Lithtech engine? - coheedcollapse, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2I love it when people read like one sentence in a post and then mod it down and immediately reply.
I didn't say I would enjoy the gameplay any less if it were graphically inferior - I never said that - I stated multiple times that I'm pretty much constantly on a "vintage game spree" and I drag out my SNES more than anyone I know and probably more than a majority of the people on here. I never stated that Nintendo lied to me - I researched the hell out of the system and had followed every bit of news on it closely until I purchased it. I got a Wii as soon as I could - despite the fact that I knew it was lacking graphically - and I still love it to death even though I'm at a lack of things to play on it at this point.
I'm just saying I'd much rather see games tailored for the Wii on the Wii other than stuff that would be better off on the other systems. Sure it won't be HORRIBLE on the Wii and I won't hesitate to buy it - but Xenosaga - which was what I was really concentrating on - would really be better on another system.
To abbreviate this:
- I'm not a graphics whore (As much as you'd love to classify me as such because I care the tiniest bit about graphics.)
- I play the ***** out of older games (I'm a SNES RPG fanatic)
- I love the Wii (I know for some reason on Digg you're either for the Wii with everything you've got or you're the enemy. Just because I say something that might be percieved as against it doesn't mean that I'm some ***** who just wants to insult it.) - LockeLimeMiasma, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0yeah, but you can't sit down and play an RPG on a Wii.
it just doesn't happen.
Xenosagas 1 and 2 were amazing (I haven't gotten 3 yet, I feel so ashamed!)
but on the Wii?
excuse me?
that's not happening.
Xenosaga and everything of it's sort are Playstation territory.
period. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+3So I'm guessing this isn't going to help the development for a future No One Lives Forever sequel on the PC...
- coheedcollapse, on 10/12/2007, -7/+4Earthbound is my favorite RPG of all time, but I still have no idea what that has to do with my argument. I'm just saying I'm not willing to pay full price for something with last-gen technical aspects when I can just get Star Ocean used for $10 and pop it in my PS2 and have it be just as pretty as a current Wii game and enjoy it just as much (for the record I already own Star Ocean, I'm just using it as an example).
Yes, I get it, Digg loves the Wii - yes, I get it, the storyline is the main thing that is great about an RPG - but that doesn't mean that I can't be upset that I'm paying only $10 less than I would be if the game were on the 360 or the PS3 and all I'm getting extra from the last generation are some controls that I'll forget about less than 10 minutes into the game. (Don't lie...you know you're the same way with most Wii games)
I'm not saying the Wii doesn't have it's place in gaming..I own one and love it...I'm just saying that traditional games being limited to just the wii is going to suck in the long run. We need new and innovative games that are totally based around the new control scheme - not a bunch of existing franchises that have been great in the past with tacked-on motion controls. - brstilson, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1From the title I thought they were talking about the Monolith that sells preconfigured MythTVboxes.
- acdcfanbill, on 10/12/2007, -8/+2Oh thank god its not Monolith. The inappropriately titled article scared me. I've been a fan of Monolith games for years, nolf 1 and 2, avp2, fear, condemned. Glad to see they weren't swept up, even by someone like Nintendo.
- thedraft, on 10/12/2007, -8/+2Nintendo acquires majority stake in Monolith, secures future of Wii cut-scenes.
- craterburnsu, on 10/12/2007, -8/+1No RPG needs Wiimote features... so by that, They shouldn't be on the wii when on the PS3 or Xbox 360 they'd be able to push out the nicer game play and graphics. Anyone else tried turning the wiimote sideways, It's uncomfortable.
- Junkyarddawg, on 10/12/2007, -8/+1Industry news yes, gaming news no.
- Calypsoaf, on 10/12/2007, -10/+3How is Monolith Soft "established" or "good"?
Don't get me wrong, I am not here to troll but, please, let's really look at their track record. So far they have delivered a lackluster trilogy of RPG's (Xenosaga), that was such a letdown in general they couldn't even finish it right (it was planned for 6 games, but they had to cut is short to 3 after lackluster sales). Beyond that they have....uhh...absolutly nothing but a slap on name to Baten Kaitos (which is a decent game). Looking past that, the ONE game they have in development for the Wii isn't even an RPG.
No offense but I'm a bit skeptical with Monolith, so far their track record is all hype, no product. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -11/+2It is...?
wow, I wasn't aware - Dumbledorito, on 10/12/2007, -11/+1Is this the same Monolith I've been waiting on to give us "Blood 3?"
Slackers. - coheedcollapse, on 10/12/2007, -15/+4I'm really upset about this. The Wii or DS really can't bring anything new to the Xenosaga franchise.
I love my Wii, but I'd much rather see the cutscene-laden Xenosaga on my PS3 (or 360) in all of it's pretty glory as I really can't see how they could do it on the Wii any better without making it gimmicky.
I'd much rather see a majority of RPG's on the PS3 or the 360 just due to the fact that there's not really anything that the Wii can bring to the table that will be so awesome that it'll replace the fact that it's technically lacking. Sure you can trace runes on screen to cast them or aim and shoot at enemies during special attack sequences, but it really won't make up for the fact that we're re-living last generation's technology. - Ryudo2k9, on 10/12/2007, -13/+0-_- I submitted this before anyone 16 hours ago http://digg.com/gaming_news/Nintendo_gets_Xenosaga_developer
- lieutenantmudd, on 10/12/2007, -21/+2This story is just another example of how Nintendo and Apple are soul mates. This is a page right of Apple's playbook. Not enough third party support? Go out and buy a market leader and make them support your platform first and best.
- DarkStalker, on 10/12/2007, -27/+2All this means is that they are going to start working on sword minigames that will sell at $50 a piece.

What is Digg?
