- Korexz, on 10/12/2007, -3/+25Let's do some math kids!
Since launch of PS3 in Japan:
PS3 = 385,791
Wii = 823,311
360 = 88,698
OUCH!
And even better, the Wii nearly sold in the first WEEK what the PS3 has sold total in Japan.
360 isn't doing all that great in Japan either. The rule of thumb is if you don't succeed there you will see fewer 3rd party titles and much fewer exclusive titles...
The PS3 isn't doing so hot here in the US either:
http://www.korexz.com/2006/12/31/where-is-all-the-proof-that-there-are-ps3s-sitting-on-store-shelves/ - Craga89, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12I don't get this whole deal with the wiimote straps. If it breaks your obviously not using it how it was intended. Stop trying to blame Nintendo for your idiocy.
Keep up the great work Nintendo! - Sirocco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10>> What the hell is wrong with Japan?
Allow me to repeat myself for the zillionth time. Japanese gamers do not really care much for western games. So you can either pick up a PS3 that will be riddled with games made by Japanese developers who share their tastes, or a 360 with... well... you get Blue Dragon.
Eastern versus western game design. They are not the same. - sullyz0r, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Not only porn games, but sick twisted tentacle-raping-schoolgirl games.
Sales of the 360 would go through the roof. - toasty168, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10if microsoft really wants to succeed in japan, all they have to do is allow high quality porn games. i gaaaaruuuuunnntteeee the 360 will take off. and of course region lock them to japan.
- Konrad9, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Wii's are selling like crazy and I STILL CAN'T FIND ONE ANYWHERE.
This blows. - Fritzed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Actually, some of the first straps were defective. One of my two original straps started fraying just a few days after I got it. I took it off, but it wasn't really a problem. The trick is, don't play like an idiot and throw the controller.
I am glad to have received my replacements though, just in case. - AkatsukiNoTobi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5"if microsoft really wants to succeed in japan, all they have to do is allow high quality porn games. i gaaaaruuuuunnntteeee the 360 will take off. and of course region lock them to japan."
Why the region lock? - Craga89, on 10/12/2007, -6/+11The PS3 isn't doing so great _anywhere_ or are you new to digg?
- MatthewWilkes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I have bought a dating simulator as a present for a friend, truly weird thing. I have to say, I'd be worried if they came out on the wii. I have horrible mental images.
- electronicmaji, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The Japanese sale popularity runs entirely around two genres: Dating Simulators which aren't released in the USA and RPG's.
PS3 has major support from all dating simulating companies, XBOX 360 and WII have none. PS3 and WII have pretty much all the major rpg support. - vanker, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4The mere fact that people are STILL lining up for Wiis when PS3s will sit on the shelf all day tells you something. The PS3 is still selling, just not ideally. It isn't a complete failure, but things are looking bleak compared to how well the Wii is doing off the bat. The 360 is already established, and I think it'll continue to do well for the rest of this generation.
- Daniel591992, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2YOUR A DUPE FOR CALLING ME A DUPE
YOU DUPEFACE!!!!!!one1!!one!!! - ohhsnap, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Stop making me want to get one!
- Klarth, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Well, I can't say anyone was expecting *this* to happen!
Oh, never mind, yeah I did. Great news! - youpidou, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Wii is nothing compared to DS:
DS Lite sold more than the Wii, the PS2, the PS3, XBOX and XBOX 360 combined ( http://www.m-create.com/jpn/s_ranking.html )
The price point for *real* mass market adoption is lower than the production cost for any of the new generation consoles, which is why Sony expect to sell more PS2 than PS3 in 2007. - alx242, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Craga89:
_anywhere_ only equals Japan and US currently, moron! - PDelahanty, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4YOU'RE a dupe.
- ItsDrew, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3The Wii is selling before it hits the shelf. I think these numbers are a testament to manufacturing and shipping capabilities, not to the popularity of the system (all new console systems sell like hotcakes). When shelves are stocked with all three systems, then we can compare what is selling more by looking at the sales totals.
- GMNikku, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The Wii is obviously smashing here as well as oversees. And there still are massive amounts of people still waiting to buy one.
- Klarth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Why the region lock?"
Japanese porn. *shudder* - DBiz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is neat at all... but is this supposed to be surprising?
- ssj27gohan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Seriously, common sense tells you not to blame Nintendo.
If I buy a baseball bat and start swinging it in my house, breaking anything falls on my shoulders.
But, I guess since it's video games you can sue them... - bdorry, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Thanks for the heads up
- greevar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm not that stupid to throw a Wii controller. I was poking fun at the people that are. Geez, Netizens are rather touchy.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Now that was a fairly useless post, don't you think?
- ohhsnap, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0So what?
- GeekedAtBirth, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3Yay! Err...I think we can all agree...Wii > NES > X360 > PS3
>.>
The article (in case traffic increases...
Sales of Nintendo's Wii surged in the third week of December in Japan as more supplies of the hard-to-get games console arrived in shops across the country.
Sales totaled 279,277 units for the week, according to figures from Media Create. That's more than double the number sold a week earlier and the greatest weekly sales yet with the exception of launch week, when 350,358 consoles were sold, according to Media Create.
Sony Computer Entertainment's PlayStation 3 also saw sales jump on the previous week, although the climb was much more modest. A total of 76,882 units were sold, says Media Create.
Sales of both consoles are constrained by supply at present, so it's difficult from the figures to gauge which will eventually prove more popular among Japanese gamers.
With the latest figures, Nintendo sits on the cusp of selling its millionth Wii console in Japan. To December 24, a total of 824,311 units have been sold, putting the million mark well within reach during the last week of the year as long as the company can keep supplies flowing into shops. In contrast, total sales of the PlayStation 3, which has been on sale for 3 weeks longer than Wii, totaled 385,791 units due to lower supply.
The figures also delivered some good news for Microsoft. Sales of the Xbox 360 were 17,213 units, which is almost unchanged from the week earlier and still well above their level in November. Microsoft launched the long-awaited "Blue Dragon" game in Japan in early December and offered a special-edition Xbox 360 console to accompany the title. That appears to have boosted sales for the machine.
In the software chart, Wii Sports ranked fifth with sales of 152,756 units, making it the highest-selling software title of the week for any of the three consoles. The title is sold separately in Japan but bundled with the console in North America.
Overall, the handheld Nintendo DS Lite maintained its strong lead with sales of 485,584 units, says Media Create. Its closest handheld rival, Sony's PlayStation Portable (PSP) sold 138,588 units for the week. Six of the top-ten software titles were for the DS, including number-one-ranked "Pokemon Diamond," while the PSP game "Metal Gear Solid Portable" ranked second.

- Ignignokt01, on 10/12/2007, -9/+3What the hell is wrong with Japan? Are they that fanboyish that they'll pick up a PS3 with only one decent game for them? I wish we had some japanese representation on Digg so we could understand where they're coming from.
- dclowd9901, on 10/12/2007, -8/+2"What the hell is wrong with Japan?"
Maybe they're still bitter about that thing we did...
You know...THAT thing...
