At this rate it will take about 6 months. - MikeD606, on 10/12/2007, -4/+32actually any online-enabled game will probably do the trick.
- tumbleweed05, on 10/12/2007, -5/+29super smash bros brawl will prolly be nintendos killer app this year.
- blofeld9999, on 10/12/2007, -18/+40Nintendowned!
- roxya, on 10/12/2007, -3/+22I'm amazed people are buying that many PS3's when the titles just aren't there yet.
Let's see what happens when they are ._. - cambrown99, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2518 percent more than a year ago isn't that impressive because they had major shortages (as in not shipping to retail) through March.
Halo 3 will sell a lot of units, but I'll bet that Nintendo might hold a certain 'smash' hit for release the same week which will also move some consoles... - Crass22, on 10/12/2007, -3/+20@ igotdugout
Yeah Wii is like the worst system out there. It's so fun and everyone I know loves it so I really hate it. - stung47000, on 10/12/2007, -6/+23In addition, Microsoft is probably pleased that with their year-old system they still sold 18% more than the same period last year.

Call it spin if you want but this is good news for both MS and Nintendo. - iluvatar, on 10/12/2007, -4/+17don't count out Mario Galaxy
- freehunter, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15@software2
Do you need a job? I'm looking for someone to do marketing for my baby-trebuchet business. For some reason we are getting bad press. - silverwolfe, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13It's good news for all of them, the PS3 is keeping up with the Xbox 360--more or less--and the Wii is running away with it all so far. I was surprised the PS3 sold as much as it has, since there is nothing to play on it now, save for Resistance which isn't too big a hit.
- EtherGnat, on 10/12/2007, -8/+17...not that there's anything wrong with that.
- fadeaway, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8@ ksudesigner: What kind of games interest me? How about something new, something interesting. Something that's not a sequal, or a re-hash, or geared towards 10 year olds. Something that will actually make full use of the potential that lies within the Wii's control scheme.
So.. yeah.. other than that basically what I want is a Star Wars game.
God damnit.
;) - silverwolfe, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10It's only keeping up because it's still selling relatively close to the same amount per month the Xbox 360 has without any must have title, I thought sales for it would be much lower than they are.
Yes, they do need to sell more per month to make up ground they lost, but they are keeping up in month to month sales at least. - APHughes, on 10/12/2007, -14/+22Turns out people like to have fun and don't just like pretty pictures.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8You are not looking too hard
- aliengoods, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8@kingfoot
There are good games now, but there are also games that you can tell are gamecube ones ported to the Wii. As such, they don't make great use of the Wiimote. I expect 6 months for developers to really get a handle on the Wiimote, and develop the games exclusively for them. Right now, the only Wii games I've played that make great use of the Wiimote are Wii Sports, Rapalla Fishing, and Wii Play. Zelda is great, but I can think of a few ways the control could be better.
With the Wii, the control schemes drives the game play, and that is what needs polishing by the game publishers. - cullenjack, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10i love my Wii but where are the F-ing GAMES? Tennis is the only one i really play. Wii Play was a pile. So give me a good game for this thing!!!!
- Antialias, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10I'll admit the 6 month figure was mostly sarcastic, but doing the math, at the current sales rate given by these numbers, 360 should be at around 12 million, wii at around 8 million. That's not taking into account that the Wii sales are still outstripping supply, and the demand is actually increasing each month as shown in a number of consumer surveys.
I love my Wii, but I think the 360 is a great system as well, I just don't have money/time to put into a second system to make it worth it for me. - jacksons98, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8The way I see it is Wii nailed launch and had a great line up of games the last few months, Zelda, Wii Sports, Wario, Excite Truck, etc, but now the PS3 is starting to get it's line up Motorstorm, Virtua Fighter, Armored Core, Lair, etc, then X360 will get it's games Bioshock & Halo3 come to mind. The first few months of 2007 have been good to Nintendo, but once Sony and MS start unloading their big guns it might be hard for Wii to maintain it's momentum.
- whalefarmerjohn, on 10/12/2007, -6/+13Console Warriors... on my signal unleash hell.
Seriously, lets not turn this into a console ***** if you don't like the wii then don't digg it and wait for the xbox 360 or ps3 headline that you will undoubtedly see later today. - fadeaway, on 10/12/2007, -5/+12I got mine a month ago.. Wii sports is great.. I'm not interested in Zelda.. Warioware was fun for 20 minutes (but is still a blast to play when you have friends over).. WiiPlay is garbage (but, after a month of fruitless searching, let me *finally* get a second remote, so I forgive).. so right now I'm wondering when they'll come out with something else that I actually want to play. Ive been going through the previews of upcoming Wii titles.. sadly not much is looking altogether promising.
C'mon Nintendo, make with the goods! A man can only live on Wii Sports for so long..
The only saving grace for the Wii right now is that I'm getting to run through all the GC titles I missed.
/trots off to play Metroid Prime. - fadeaway, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9As an aside, I thought I would relay a rather amusing scenario that emerged while I was at EB last night purchasing a copy of Metroid Prime.
As I made my way over to the used Gamecube section, I noticed three guys playing WarioWare on the demo Wii. This particular EB, being inside of a mall, had attracted these three a-typical specimens of contemporary mall-faring male - the impeccably groomed metro-sexual.
Those who have played WarioWare know that the game consists of many levels, each with their own nonsensical, highly Japanese influenced theme and storyline. This particular level was one in which the theme was squealing adolescent, pink pom-pom wielding cheerleaders.
After a few minutes of play, and bearing witness to the feverish cheering and dancing of the cheerleaders, the fellow that was playing walked over to the counter. He set the Wiimote down with his finely manicured hands, no doubt all the time being mindful not to scratch the shiny silver jewel-encrusted watch that adorned his slender wrist. He tilted his highlight adorned head in a cocky, sarcastic manner - a motion that caused his pink (yes, pink. Salmon is a fish, not a color) golf shirt with the flipped up collar to wrinkle ever so slightly. The clerk turned to face him, no doubt aware of his presence not by the wistful sigh that escaped his lips, but by the cloud of three-hundred-dollar-an-ounce scent that radiated within 3 meters of the lad. He leaned ever so slightly towards the clerk and, in a hushed voice the following magical sentence escaped him.
"Can I maybe try another game? This one is so GAY."
I'm not sure if he heard my choked laughter, but I really.. really hope he did. ;) - KSUdesigner, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6"still can't get a wii by me. target still has the same stupid sign up saying "due to high demand, we cannot guarantee nintendo wii's" or something along those lines. yet there are 5 ps3's sitting next to em."
Check around on eBay, you can find some decent deals. I just bought a Wii on eBay last week for $340 including shipping plus Zelda. Wii retail is $249, games average $50, plus tax, so really I only ended up paying about $20 more than I would've by purchasing it in a brick and mortar store. - Xarou, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10Halo 3 and I also want to say Guitar Hero for the 360. I have it preordered and now I just have to get me a 360. Why would I spend almost 400 on Guitar Hero, including the price of the 360? Because with it's downloadable content and all that fun stuff, it is going to be better than the PS2 one.
- Lonecow, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8I have a 360 and I love it, but I think some of you are slightly inflating how well the 360 is doing. The only reason it is doing well is because it had a year head start. But it wasn't some huge popular gaming system last year. Only hard core fanboys like us had one. It wasn't like when the PS2 came out and everyone and their dog had to have one.
Simply put you can't compare sales figures between a console that's been out over a year and one that's been out for 3 months. That doesn't make sense.
As Moore himself said, the real battle begins this upcoming Christmas since all three will be out and have some time to saturate. - Desolite, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10still can't get a wii by me. target still has the same stupid sign up saying "due to high demand, we cannot guarantee nintendo wii's" or something along those lines. yet there are 5 ps3's sitting next to em.
- taraba, on 10/12/2007, -7/+13If Nintendo keeps selling only 100,000 - 200,000 more Wiis in a month than 360s, it will take 3-6 years to equal the 360 install base. So consistently selling 200,000 more Wiis in a month than 360s will mean about 3 years of still being in second place and closing the gap. It's good news for the Wii, but the numbers aren't high enough to topple the 360 in 2007 or 2008.
from the article: "However, the January results won't reflect a long-term trend, predicted Michael Pachter, analyst with Wedbush Morgan Securities. He said he expects the PlayStation 3, with its embedded Blu-ray Disc player, to win the long-term race for market share, as the prices for all three consoles decline."
Way to stick to your outdated prediction. Mike, just admit you were wrong and bet on a new guy. Don't feel ashamed. A lot of people thought the PS3 was going to be a big hit. Do the right thing and revise your prediciton. - freetyme, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9Metroid Prime 3 will decide whether the Wii will become THE place for more immersive FPS, and FF Crystal Chronicles will decide if RPGs work, if both these games are a hit, I can see a lot of great games coming to the Wii, and not just from Nintendo either.
- BabyWookie, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8Personally, I haven't bought any games since getting Zelda and CoD3 on launch. There's just nothing that interests me out right now. Sorry, but WarioWare, Raving Rabids and Elebits are just not my thing. Well, maybe if they were $20... I'll have to check out the reviews for that new Sonic game. That could be cool. But, my Wii has been pretty much collecting dust lately, while the PC and 360 is getting all the action.
- aliengoods, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I have to agree. I lived in Germany for a year, and Germans bought anything with Philips or Sony on it (TVs, stereos, playstations, you name it). I'm not sure why, but Europe seems to have a huge Sony base. Although I do think Nintendo did quite well in the handheld markets.
Also, I welcome theories from any Europeans on why this is so. - EtherGnat, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7"The Wii went over really badly, I know 3 people with them"
"I know 5 people with a Wii"
"I only know of 3 people with 360s and one person who's considering buying one."
I know seven people who think anecdotal evidence is pretty worthless. - Phocion55, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7"Haven't played one myself, so i will reserve judgment."
Too late. - weareglass, on 10/12/2007, -6/+11Anyone else impressed that Nintendo was throwing around "long tail" terminology? I think that's pretty neat. First retailers started helping us acquire books, CDs etc. not geared towards the mainstream user, and now Nintendo is making games not aimed at the mainstream video gamer. Good for me since the 360 and PS3-type shoot em up 1st person games bore me to death.
- DudeManWord, on 10/12/2007, -5/+9Why am i not surprised... its the cheapest and easiest to play. Its a fun system, and once good games come out it will be awesome. I personally love my 360, but i also own a wii. Its a great system and Im glad to see nintendo make a comeback, a strong comeback.
- eric1, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7Yeah I've been looking through the old GC games to find some classics for my Wii. Paper Mario is good, haven't tried Metroid Prime yet... but the best, hands-down IMO is Resident Evil 4. Definitely pick a copy of that if you've never played it.
- freetyme, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7lonecow:
I would have to disagree with that. I don't even own a 360 but I wouldn't say that the only reason its doing so well is that it was released a year earlier. The 360 stumbled through launch, like many systems do and many people were saying "Just wait for the PS3", then the price tag for the PS3 was revealed, and then people realized as Gears of War (I personally think that games is only OK but that's besides the point) came out that the PS3 just wasn't showing anything the 360 couldn't give AND the 360 had full online play.
the 360 isn't doing well just because it was released a year earlier. Your argument might work for the wii and 360 because the wii just needs time, but the ps3 seems to have other issues working against it. - KSUdesigner, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6@fadeaway
What the hell kind of game actually does interest you then? For me, Zelda was the #1 reason I wanted a Wii. There's plenty on the way that I can't wait to get my hands on. Prince of Persia, TMNT, Super Paper Mario, Metroid & Super Mario Galaxy just to name a few. - Lonecow, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7I think Microsoft's strategy was to get out first and just get enough people to buy the system until Halo 3 comes out. Halo 3 will almost be like a Relaunch for them.
I don't even like Halo, and I have had a 360 since launch day, but that game is a Juggernaut (as everyone here is well aware of). - mikew101, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5The only next gen system I have is the wii and I love it, but yesterday I played the ps3 at my friends house, and had a blast playing nba 07.
Honestly I think there is going to be two winners this race. I think two consoles will end up having very close amounts of sales when compared in a couple of years.
Last gen the ps2 blew everyone away with sales, but this time the wii is doing great due to innovation and pricing, yet people still want a super graphics system with classical (remote) controlled games as well.
I think the main battle to watch in the next year is between ps3 and xbox 360 because many gamers are going to have both a wii and one of those systems. - ryogahibiki, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5I am NOT surprised the Wii sold as much as it did, I STILL cannot find it in stores.
I am totally surprised the PS3 sold 244,000 units. With all the bad press Sony has gotten lately, I thought it would be less than 100,000 units sold. I'm wondering how many of these units are being purchased primarily as blu-ray players?
I'm wondering if people are waiting to buy a 360 due to the rumours of an upgraded 360 (zephyr) being released soon. I know I'm waiting. - cloudless, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3There is no need to protect the TV from flying Wiimotes. Just protect it from idiots who don't use the straps.
- staticneuron, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Speaking of spin
"Nintendo Wii sold 436,000 units in January according to NPD, with Xbox 360 selling 294,000 units and PlayStation 3 hitting 244,000.
The numbers were released to various news outlets by Microsoft, and have not been officially verified by NPD."

I do not understand what this means really...... - Sirocco, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7Animal Crossing Wii is gonna rake in a ***** of cash.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I thought my last line would have shown I was joking... obviously not.
- biuelizard, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5@taraba:
your theory works great except it doesn't factor in anywhere outside of the united states. let us not forget that japan is currently dominated by both nintendo systems, a market the 360 will never penetrate. - antifreze, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5All i want to know is where I can get a Wii this weekend... Chandler AZ....
I really want one, but can't find one.
The last system I bought was a Sega... and that was a year after it came out. Thank you Nintendo for bringing me back to consoles, now make some more. - TDR25, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Still can't really find any, and still not really surprised by Nintendo's success. My only question is with the 360 growing more powerful and more people adapting to the PS3, how long will Nintendo's success last. Hell, who am I kidding, Nintendo's not really even competing with those other guys. At $250 for a console with similar technology to a Game Cube, I don't see how Nintendo can fail even if the Wii stops selling.
- kufu91, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2it would have been 436,001 if i had found one in any of the six stores i looked in
grumble grumble
/hopefully Saturday I'll find one
//slashies on digg? - Sauerball, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Looking at these in dollar terms instead of unit terms paints a pretty different picture. People are spending just as much on PS3s as they are on Wiis.
Just saying. -
