- natethegreat05, on 10/12/2007, -8/+149i went to my local BB this morning at 4:30am. I was 25th in line. At 5:30, they handed out tickets- 24 of them. yes, i was one short.
i hate life right now. - sparks2, on 10/12/2007, -4/+40If it makes you feel better, I know someone who had that happen to them twice...
- cambrown99, on 10/12/2007, -3/+32This is where stores are absolutely wrong for the way they are handling line-ups. If you've only got 20 units, then you tell the 21st person in line to go home--don't make them wait for hours to find out they're out of luck.
- StickyShoez, on 10/12/2007, -3/+25I ended up waiting about 47 hours on launch weekend and I was 14th in line. The Wal-mart said they had 29....then the next day they came out and said they had 27.....then later that night they said they had 20......By this time I was pretty worried, but luckily 20 was the magic number, however it really sucked for the others in line that thought they were getting one.
I still think they had 29, but let employees "call dibbs" on them. - gungaroo22, on 10/12/2007, -1/+22Makes camping out at launch seem better in retrospect, eh?
63 units at our Best Buy. 57 campers. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -9/+30If it makes you feel better, I camped out for mine, and have had it for almost a month. I beat Red Steel and Zelda. They're really fun. You should check them out.
Oh, shi-- - Waterispoison, on 10/12/2007, -2/+20No...it's cause you "snagged" a couple to sell them for money while many people were not able to even get one. Sure you got there early and sure you have the "right" to get them and turn them around to sell them, but you sir, are a douche.
- sparks2, on 10/12/2007, -4/+15That would require someone who works at the store to show up at 4 am and go "sir, you're out of luck" ... sure it's an easy job... but who wants to do it at 4 am when they start work at 9?
- NumberFour, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13Yeah but the thing is, they wouldn't ever do that, because if they have 20 Wii's, and 200 people show up to get one, then you'll have 180 people with money ready to spend at your shop. Basically they don't send them home in hopes that those that didnt get a wii buy something else.
- stuartcow, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9They did do that at the Target I was waiting at. They told us before the store closed that they only had 15 units. We kept telling people as they were showing up but they would still line up as if they had a chance.
We told one older guy that showed up at about 4am and he just replied "I'll take my chances." Well, he was ~50th in line and went home at 6:30am when they passed out tickets. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11My Best Buy has gotten more PS3s than Wiis
where the ***** are these 4 million Wiis? - Konrad9, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11Yes, sir, you are stupid.
***** like you are the reason WHY the Wii is impossible to find. - jcapogna, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7At Target, an employee came out at 1am and told us that they had 15 Wiis. So we (the campers) turned away the people were not going to get one. Worked out great and didn't require an employee to be there.
- timmayk, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7agreed. i was #4 in line on launch day and only had to be out there 10 hours. every other day they were available, 10 times worse. it's like the mommas and the papas all heard from the media that its the it gift, so they must have it.
- voisine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6WTF? why is he a douchebag for snagging a few and reselling them? The store is offering them below market price. They're handing out free money. He'd be a fool not to buy as many as they will let him and he has credit enough to buy. There is no such thing as a shortage under capitialism. You can buy one right now on eBay. The damand for $250 wii's is higher than the supply, but the demand for $400-$500 wii's matches the supply, so that's what they end up going for on eBay.
- jtdgrz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6On launch, at the local best buy, I went at 8 p.m. the night before. I was 34 in line. During the night, 3 people dropped their places in line. The line knew throughout the night there were 87. An hour before the store opened, 87 tickets were handed out. People kept lining up. By the time the store opened, there were 150+ people in line, and we had been telling everyone there were only 87 all night. I ended up getting the 31st Wii at that best buy, and the 13 hours in the cold were definitely worth it.
- Bob042, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7For your information:
I'll assume the "profile" you're talking about is your Mii. If you wanted, you could make one in 30 seconds, but it's more fun to make one that looks like you or someone. From there, it takes maybe another 5 clicks in Wii sports to register it there.
Boxing is one of the less responsive games. It's very picky what constitutes a punch, a block, etc., but it has nothing to do with your height. The controls for boxing are motion sensitive, nothing to do with pointing. - Mufflegrump, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5@Talon; You're a pathetic person. It must suck to be that unhappy with your life.
- Coffeedemon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Maybe the clerk didn't like you since you so neatly categorize people into groups like "nerdy".
- Jrr6415sun, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5because ps3's are not impossible to find, infact if you did not know, the person who replied to your comment had the chance to buy 3 of them.
- TheShrike, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Don't go to a popular or well known location. I went to go get mine from a BestBuy at 7:00 am on the saturday they received the second shipment. I was #33 in the line; they had 42. Total hours spent waiting: 2.
The BestBuy I went to was in the Viriginian outer suburbs of D.C. I didn't even consider the four or five other BestBuys I passed on the way as alternatives.
Bigger and popular locations- and those in the hearts of cities are much more likely to sell most of their stock to employees first, since they're also more likely to have more part-time employees who are privy to the exact status of the shipments.
Be smart. If the store is well-known enough to attract more than 2 campers, don't bother. Scout out-of-the-way locations the evening before a shipment is due, and pick a place based on that. - mavranos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3hmmm. I got in line at my local Circuit City an hour before the store opened on launch day. Got ticket 11 of 15. Funny thing is I didn't plan on getting one on launch day. I thought that I would be able to pick one off the shelf a few weeks later. I just happened to be out and thought I'd try since the line was short.
Took forever to find extra wii-motes and nunchucks though.
Saw a guy in line at Best buy this morning sell his #1 ticket for $100 bucks. There were about 50 in line for 18 Wiis.
Good luck to all still looking. Don't buy from ebay profiteers! - spoonmanp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3There are plenty of Wii's in New York City. The times sq. toys r' us has them in stock constantly.
- dagamer34, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3This is the first time I've heard of people queuing up to buy a console after it's been released. O_o
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Digg me down down for this, but .... why?
I mean come on. Its a game machine. Camping out? Forming a line? Next year or thereafter these things will be all over the place.
As an aside, whats the deal with these companies anyway? Don't they realize this is not very good for them overall? Here's why. I want a Wii or PS3. I go to the store. None are found. Ok, I give up. No sale, and no purchase of any _games_ to go with it. No accessories. Nada. Bubbye. Didn't need it anyway. Lookee, I just saved myself $300+ dollars. Hey and if I wait a little longer, it will only cost me $200. Or maybe Ill spend it on that machine.
Ok sure, the graphics are pretty and all. But a racing game is a racing game. This to me is just retarded. - Jrr6415sun, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5"Yeah but the thing is, they wouldn't ever do that, because if they have 20 Wii's, and 200 people show up to get one, then you'll have 180 people with money ready to spend at your shop. ***** that *****, if I waited 5 hours for nothing because the store refused to tell me before hand how many they had I would never shop there again. - Ugoff, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4My dad was planning on camping out last night/early this morning. He left at 10 PM and waited in his car but "nobody" was in line so he left at 3 AM. He came home and I woke up and we went back and I guess when my dad left, people started waiting in line outside. Luckily, I was still #7.
We just chilled outside and talked and stuff. They were really nice people. There were some college students there and some mom's picking up something for the kids and even grandparents. People started coming in and opening up at around 6 AM and I said hi to some of the people I knew who work there and they handed out tickets at around 7:15. Now we have a Wii under our Christmas tree :).
Overall, my experience was nothing like the horror stories you usually hear, although I saw somebody cry though. After I got my ticket, I decided to wait in the car for a while and while I was reading, this woman walked who wanted to get something for the kids I guess and when she walked back, she was crying so that kind of sucked.
I also studied for my midterms while waiting :p. - 18842, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Thats what i love about livin in Aus :), All the shops have oodles of supplies of Wii's here :P
- charlie55, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3i got my wii from amazon on launch day during the one minute it was for sale. some dude had written a script that detected when it went up. it played a noise when it came available. i fell asleep next to my computer, and then the sound woke me, and i bought it within 20 seconds or so. nothing to it.
- voisine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3This way with them being sold on eBay, the only people who will get them on christmas morning are the people who value them the most. See how that works? If you did manage to snag one, but don't value it higher than $400-500 cold hard cash, you'll sell it on eBay to someone who does. See how brilliant this free market thing is?
- Andrico4, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5A couple of friends and I were waiting outside of target the night before launch. We waited for about 26 hours. At around 9:00 before the store closed we saw another guy from our school. He told us we were idiots for waiting in line and he would pick one up the next week. He tried to go early in the morning twice and he still does not have one. This makes me laugh.
- dohidied, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Looking back on my years on this earth, I now believe that camping out for 8 hours on launch day was the best decision of my life.
- iKato, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3TheShrike is right. Less popular locations are key. I camped out in front of a Circuit City less than 2 miles away from a much bigger one. It's often overlooked and I had actually forgotten it was there. (I managed to get there at midnight was third in line.)
Simply find the outlets most people don't seem to go to next time. Call ahead and then get there as early as possible. - wyrdness, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I checked a message board on Friday morning and saw a post that Amazon.co.uk had some in stock. I ordered immediately, it was dispatched Saturday morning and is due for delivery tomorrow. I hear that shops are apparently getting sporadic deliveries so it pays to keep checking.
- ij00mini, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Didn't you have a chair?
- fakesinatra, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I waited about an hour this morning in front of Target. I was #30 or so for a store that only handed out 15 tickets.
I'm not that disappointed. Me and the ol' PS2 are still chugging away on Guitar Hero 2 and FF12. - VeganBob, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I was under the impression that they didn't know how many they were actually getting until they opened the doors of the shipment truck.
- killerofkiller, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3edit: it was 100 dollars i didn't doulbe check my comment..
- crcurran, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2of course it's out of stock, it's reaching into the general populace, that is far bigger than gaming crowd. far bigger.
I got mine the day after launch at the NYC Nintendo World Headquarters. Amazing machine especially with four controllers nad nunchucks and a projector. One F'n kick ass party!!! - voisine, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3@heavydada
Actually, you know what? The economic system is smarter than me. I just thought of something that the system was accounting for without me even realising it. I find it hard to believe there are more than a small handful of people who can afford $250, but can't afford an extra $200 on top. Are they really not planning on buying 4 games for it, say, over the next year or so? The fact is, almost anyone who can afford $250 *can* pay an extra $200 if they really want to, but they know maybe without even thinking about it, that all they are getting for their extra $200 is a wii under the tree several weeks before they'll be able to get it for just $250. You can give your nephew a card that says, IOU 1 wii, the second they are in stock at the local best buy. Not quite as good as the actual item right now, but if the difference was worth more than $200 *to you*, you'd buy one on eBay. - bigjimslade, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Wow. I just stopped by a local Wal-Mart. They had 10 of them at 10:30 this morning - Monday. I bought one. I spent 2 hours in the cold yesterday, and today I just walked up and bought one. Nobody else was around, either.
- voisine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Nintendo has to be the biggest charitable giving organization in the world right now. If the market price of a Wii is $400-500 and they're handing out 4 million of them for $250 a peice to anyone willing to stand in line long enough, that's like $800 million dollars they're just giving away to nintendo fans. I personally think they're being morons for selling a single unit at $250 when they should have done a dutch auction. Everyone goes to the nintendo website and bids the most they're willing to spend to get one. As each batch comes off the assembly line, they sell them first to the people who bid the most, on down the line until you run out.
- biw314, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2i was 33rd in line at target when the manager came out and said they had 15 in the store. A bunch of people left, I stuck it out and got the 15th. My kids will be excited, but never know how close they were to not having one.
- sinembarg0, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I waited for 8 hours outside Target on launch day and was about 8th in line. They had 60 to sell, and if my source or payment would've gotten up sooner, I would've had two Wiis because there weren't 60 people in line when they handed out the tickets an hour before the store opened, although when the store did open the tickets were gone. The Wii had a launch, they just haven't really been able to keep up with demand after that. The PS3 I would not say had anything close to what qualifies as a launch.
- Zippo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Man, am I ever glad I pre-ordered and got mine bright and early on the morning of November 19th.
Good luck to all your hopeful Wii-owners, though. *gives a Wiimote salute* - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2im glad i preordered
my friends are trying to get their hands on one after playing with mine, and it seems to be sold out in alot of places around sydney too
surprised though, i didnt think it was doing that well here
(if anyone's seen or head of the advertisements that nintendo are pulling here for the Wii, they'd understand. gives sony a run for their money) - Dustyb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2My grandparents are even trying to get one. No, not for me. I have one. For themselves (they've never owned a video game console), I think Nintendo is doing JUST fine.
- Splitt3rxx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I know 2 people who want to kill me because I got a wii at launch.
- whitehornmatt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I was thinking about the price here in Australia, most stores sell it at AU$388, take the GST off that it is AU$349.20 which is US$275.87. It's a little bit more, but it isn't too bad if you compared to some other countries.
- EEEECHUTA, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Most people don't have the capacity to let go of their desires and obsessions at a drop of a hat.
