And most of all, the parent is way more likely to remember playing Nintendo when they were a kid, or remembing their brothers playing nintendo than he or she is going to recall Xbox or PS3.
Something like 1 in 2 or 1 in 3 homes had an NES in the 80s.
Sentimal value is a huge seller. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+42Parent walks in the store to buy little TImmy his X-mas gift
sees 3 systems are for sale
XBOX 360, PS3 and Wii
MS has said they are dropping the cheaper SKU and it will be all premium from here on out, we'll see if thsi happens, so assuming it did this is only helpful to the consumer, it is $399
PS3 WILL come out with 2 SKUs and will cost even more than the 360, $499 to $599, even it's cheap gimped model will be more than the xbox 360
and now Wii, this is going to sell like bannas this x-mas, and they will have the supply neccesary to do it, it will launch earlier than PS3 so no artificial shortage here and parent won't have a heart attack at the price when yo compare it to the other new consoles, in fact it will seem down right inexpensive $249
let's recap
xbox 360 ......$399
PS3 ..............$499 to $599
Wii ................$249
at the very least, Nintendo will be the "also have" system of this next generation - trutwin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+26Would you rather have more AJAX tutorial links then? Or how about a list of 100 ways to speed up XP? I for one love all the console news, I like my PS2, but I must admit I'm intrigued by the new'tendo.
- chad78, on 10/12/2007, -0/+23The Original NES cost $199 (or $249 if you wanted R.O.B. the Robot bundled with it). Adjusted for inflation, that's about $350 / $440 today.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+24I thought so too. But if it's priced anywhere in this neighborhood, what with Sony and Microsoft selling their consoles for the price of a Wii plus like a dozen games, this will be an enormous advantage for Nintendo, to go along with the controller, the built-in Wifi, the ability to download old Nintendo games, etc. I guarantee you that Nintendo's share of the video game console market is about to go up significantly.
- dracula7, on 10/12/2007, -1/+22lets not forget that before its release nintendo repeatidly said the n64 would retail for 249, but ended up launching at 200. prices change with manufacturing costs. i feel like nintendo would really want to make the wii 200 dollars, and it seems entirely possible
i cannot wait for the conference, 4 hours and 30 minutes! - batmant, on 10/12/2007, -2/+22i think this is a pretty good price point. Granted its not as low as some of us older gamers are used to but compared to Microsoft and Sony's offerings, I think the Wii could position itself very nicely here in the U.S. especially among the nostalgic gamers who will crave the exclusive licenses.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+21" Granted its not as low as some of us older gamers are used to"
The NES at its peak price had to be around 300 bucks if you adjust for inflation? The atari even more? - bpapa, on 10/12/2007, -1/+19I reccomend not visiting Digg for the rest of the day (or probably even week) then.
It's E3 week buddy. - rpommier, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18Tell you what, I think I'm sold on the Wii. Here's my situation, I'm married and have two little girls, and not much free time for much gaming. What do you think the chances of them being interested in an 360 or PS3 will be? Or me having the time to actually get into a 360 or PS3? My PS2 rarely gets used and really in depth PC games are starting to fall by the wayside.
If $250 is true Nintendo has one me this round, easy quirky kid/family friendly games and a nice price point. Can't see spending $400+ for nextgen and $60 a game for games I will have no time to fully appreciate. - batmant, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12yea i agree. I don't currently own any next-gen console and am hoping to only purchase one. Right now the 360 seems like the slickest thing on the block but there isn't a must-have game in my opinion. I would be sold on the Wii with a kick butt mario, a kick butt zelda, or a kick butt insert-old-school-8bit-game-redux-here
- jmholloway, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12Maybe it will be bundled with two wiimotes and a game. :)?
- typobox43, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11The only official word out of Nintendo is less than or equal to $300 - or in their words, less than the competition.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12$250?
I was really hoping for $200... hopefully EGM is a little off... - borbzz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Cheney-
The original SNES was $199 (not $250 or $299)...and that got you 2 Controllers and Super Mario World. I don't know about these next-gen systems, but if you bought a PS2/GameCube/XBox when it came out, you got no game (maybe a demo disc) and one controller. It was nice to have some stuff in the box to get you started... - JasonPrini, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10US DS Lights were rumoured to be $199, then Nintendo announced the $129.99 price point.
Just wait a few hours... - adml_shake, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10200 would have been nice, but I still don't have a problem shelling out the additional 50 bucks. And since it doesn't look like I'll be buying a PS3 anytime...well ever....I'll have to wait till the 360 drops in price in a few years before I'll buy one.
- zakkuree, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Every Nintendo console that has launched was priced at $199 . So it's definitely a safe bet to say it's $199.
- mark_in_bc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9If your sick and tired of Nintendo Wiii stories don't read them.
- muyuu, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10I guess they will offer bundles for $250 or even $300.
For instance Wii+2controllers+Wii Tennis. - Nezzari, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Since nintendo has never sold a console at a loss, you are still making them money. GG.
- mrgreen4242, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8"yes because it's going to do a better job then your stero speakers.
if it's purpose is to make noise, you'll be very disappointed."
Er, yes, it would do a MUCH better job at making the controller in your hand sound like a lightsaber or a gun or a tennis raquet than any speaker system will. The sound will come from exactly where it should be coming from, not a rough stereo or even surround sound approximation. It's a brilliant idea. The crack of the bat in a baseball sim, or the ping of a golfclub, plus the afore mentioned gunshots and lightsaber sounds will be a really fun feature.
For the record the speakers on the DS are like a mm thick, draw very little power, and produce some really good sound, and they are VERY loud. I never turn mine up more than about 30%.
And, yes, speakers can, for the most part, be used as mics, as long as the device they are conencted to is prepared for the input. I wouldn't be surprised to see that be the case, or even see a seperate mic in there. Flip the controller around and use it for a VoIP handset to ring a buddy up to see if they wanna play a little Mario Kart, anyone? - batmant, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9another perspective here http://www.joystiq.com/2006/05/08/wii-to-sell-for-249/ as well
- mrgreen4242, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8I think that Nintendo has always launched at $199, haven't they? I'm still betting on that one, maybe a $250 bundle with Metroid and a second controller, though.
I think the wording in the article was supposed to be that $249 would be reasonable, in that they'd pay $250 for it not that they had info it would be launched at $249. That's what I remember from the first 10 times this was posted last night, at least. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11No, they call it revolution for the folks who refuse to call it or just don't know it's called Wii
- OrangeWhip, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Man I hate speculation on price. If it's cheaper, great. If not, everyone starts to wonder why (no offense to anyone because I'm doing the same thing).
- datagod, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Wii Controller Speaker:
From the article: "There's also a supposed built-in speaker in the controller (a DS-like mic seems more likely to us, but that's what he says)"
My inside-my-brain sources tell me that it is indeed a speaker. A very high-quality speaker for making sounds like Sword slashes, gunshot sounds, etc.
Think how cool it will be to not only see the sword onscreen, but to feel it (some weird gyro-rumble way) and HEAR it.
I just want wait! uh oh...I just Wii'd in my pants... - rm999, on 10/12/2007, -5/+12I thought it was supposed to be less than or equal to 200 dollars :-/
- Sirocco, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8I'm guessing $250, but >really< hoping for $200. The latter would really take the wind from Sony and MS' sails.
- dimplemonkey, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Right now, Sony's got me disappointed with their price tag and I will be more hestitant to buy one. If Nintendo offers Wii for $250 or less, then it will tip the scales for me.
- TetsuoSama, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Agreed. Given the amount of excitement they've generated for the machine (even after you consider the name), and their penchant for actually making a profit, I can't see them starting at $200.
On the positive side, they've surprised in just about everything else about the machine. - CaptainNasty, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9I feel that Nintendo’s prices are always fair, and $250 is very fair. Sony's $600 price is retarded. I too was looking forward to a $200 price tag but another 50 bucks is not going to sway me from getting one.
Also one more thing about ps3. $500-$600 dollars is way too much money for a toy, that’s rent money! (Assuming you has a room mate) - Sirocco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6>> I don't see many people having only a Wii.
That's true, I'll be enjoying a Wii and DS Lite ;) - Utku, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6If it's half as good as the early reviews we have suggest, (read: TIME magazine), imagine the amount of R&D that must have gone into it.
You have the sensors, the Wii-mote with all its sensors in it, the nunchaku with accelerometers, 802.11 on the console, bluetooth for the console-remote connection, and if you take the rumours into account, the "force-feeedback" and now the speaker/microphone on the wiimote, can you really see them making a profit with anything lower priced.
I don't know if Nintendo is able to afford the console at loss strategy but to me with all that tech inside it, 250$ seems to be a very reasonable price, if not on the cheap side. - Sirocco, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6That, and $200 + an extra controller and a game would put a bundle just under $300, which would be a great selling point for the holidays.
- nbuet, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I'm a father, and I know how much I am willing to pay for video games. That's not 600$, end of discussion (sorry kids). Therefore, if a ps3 comes into my house, it will be because it' MUCH more than a toy - something already promised with ps2 which never happened.
The price tag of the xbox is OK, but my kids won't expect more than one game with it (at least until next birthday / chrismas). From my point of view, Nintendo offers a great deal in terms of price tag - let's see the games now, to check if kids would prefer having two or three games and a wii, rather than a xbox360 with a single dvd. - CaptainNasty, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6@Hieros
are you kidding? Nintendo products are built to stand the test of time.
I still have all of my old systems and there games and they all still work, and they have been to hell and back. - chrismcelligott, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5The revolution name ws only recently announcing, obviously this magazine wasn't written, printed and distributed all in a week...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Opiate your name seems well chosen, as for blue ray can you say delay, I dont think you will be seeing a ps3 until early 2007 at best.
- JasonPrini, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I've been thinking exactly the same thing. Well, I don't have kids yet, but I haven't bought a DS becuase I don't have the time to play it. But I'd gladly trade CSI time to play Wii with my wife...
- mrgreen4242, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Sony, sure you can can get a nice PC for $500-600. *****, you can get a Mac mini for that. MS, ya, I can finda budget Dell for $300-400 the 360 costs.
You can't lump Ninty in there, though. $200-250 for a computer is pretty low, unless you are talking used, or a really, really good after rebates sale. They have also committed to $50 games, not $60, which I agree is pretty high. - SuperSloth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5"all this hate isn't going to make Sony fail"
Yes, it is.
If nobody likes you, they don't like your products. Nobody like MS Windows. Nobody likes MS Office. They continue to be popular only because of vendor lock-in and lack of realistic alternatives. Sony doesn't have the luxury of either of those.
Unless you absolutely, positively have to play every single SquareEnix game, you don't need the PS3. - JasonPrini, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5You'd better destroy it before you play it.
Ignorance sure it bliss isn't it. :) - lane.montgomery, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Even the SNES originally only came with one controller.
But I do see your point. They are trying to play up the "ii" part of the Wii, it looks like two controllers to me. - giggins, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I guess we will find out tomorrow.
- mrgreen4242, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4That's what I was just thinking. Although, I had heard $149 or 159 for the Lite, but either way they last minute dropped it to $129. As I and others have mentioned, every Nintendo since the NES has been $199 at launch. Yes, inflation, blah blah blah, but I think they will have a $199 "core" system with 1 controller, a demo disc (with 2 or 3 playable Wii demos and a demo of Twighlight Princess), and a few free Virtual Console dowloads. There's a good chance of a bundle at $250 with 2 controllers and a game, maybe Metroid or Mario 128 (or a bundle for each).
- lane.montgomery, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I think they are going to do what I like to call, pulling an Apple. When Apple launched the mac mini they raised the price $100 not because they had to, but because they could.
Nintendo makes profit on their consoles, they don't sell at a loss like MS and Sony. I would be willing to wager that they picked up on the extreme excitment of a $200 price point and looked at MS's price position with the assumption that Sony would be equal or higher and decided to break from their past launch prices and raise it from $199 to $249.
BTW, my rent is $475 total nestled between Lansing, MI and Ann Arbor, MI. So, yes, that is rent money! - blamethesun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4What's the name have to do with anything? It could be called the Nintendo Dickchin and it'd still be the exact same damn product.
You know, at this point in my life, having been involved with gaming for 15 years, I don't care about graphics. I just want a system that can provide something quick and fun and intuitive for me to play with my Fiance and our children (Down the road a little while...). If it has a few really in-depth fleshed out games during the consoles lifespan (Metroid, Zelda, a couple RPG's, etc) to balance the games for the 'wider audience', that is good enough for me. I cannot dedicate all my time awake to playing video games. Just give me innovative, a little of both (or all) worlds, for a really reasonable price, and i'm on it. Let me experience something new. And let me experience it with the ones I love. I'm tired of seeing people get angry and frustrated at video games, swearing, using controllers as projectiles, becoming enraged. I just want to laugh and look over at my wife, kids, mother, grandmother --- whoever, and see them smiling and laughing with me. - sentry21, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Nintendo is going to beat the PS3 with its quirkyness.
- astrotrain, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Video Game Consoles are so expensive anymore. And then in a year they drop down to a sidewalk sale in
front of Toys R Us. You can purchase a full blown computer system for the price Sony and Nintendo are
charging for the console alone!
I don't see how people can afford to pick up multiple games for their kids at $60.00 a pop. -
