- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+112I saw a nun looking for a wii in best buy this weekend. I swear to God.
- BakedGoods, on 10/12/2007, -4/+44I'm not so sure about that. Nintendo has sold 6 million Wii's in a quarter of the time it took MS to sell 10 mill. It is one of the fastest selling consoles in video game history. Don't blame Nintendo, blame us hungry gamers wanting to try something new.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+33i think they are holding back wiis inorder to use the "cartmanland method" to market the wii.
- eMximeR, on 10/12/2007, -3/+30Wow I hope you're not really American... you are a disgrace to the country if you are.
- MuZiKMafia, on 10/12/2007, -5/+28After that one lady died trying to hold her's, I wouldn't hold back my wii's either.
- aywwts4, on 10/12/2007, -1/+23Just a little trip down digg's memory lane...
"Of course I HIGHLY doubt there will even BE a shortage. I'll probably walk into a zellers or a toys r us and pick one up shortly after the stores open."
"Wow, do I even need to bother finding a place to pre-order the Wii? It sounds like it should be pretty easy to get one."
"I keep telling myself that I will only get a Wii at launch if I can walk in somewhere and pick one up...looks like I might not have a problem doing that.
Could this be the best launch ever?
2 Million Units"
"oh, great, there go my ebay profits"
"Why the heck would you want to wait in line to buy the Wii. Is it out of principle; out of admiration for Nintendo? I was under the impression that there wouldn't be any shortages like for Xbox360.
But really, are you people confident on the Nintendo launch numbers or not? Make up your minds!"
by aywwts4 on 11/02/06
Yes I am confident of the launch numbers, Yes I am confident there will be shortages.
Sorry for that, Carry on. :) - eMximeR, on 10/12/2007, -6/+28At this point I don't know when Wii's will be readily available on the shelf. They sell out instantly every time theres a new shipment (once or twice a month?)
I don't think anyone predicted Wii's to be so hot. - Erasmus1, on 10/12/2007, -2/+22@Segitz
You have got to be kidding. China can't even feed it's own people and the EU doesn't have a military worth 10 cents. How do you define a Super Power? - Erasmus1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+19That makes no business sense. It costs Nintendo money to hold back supply. Even though their 4th quarter numbers look good, they would have been better if they were able to move more product also, it costs money to warehouse inventory. They also get a kickback on game sales, which would be higher if there were more systems in homes. Only an idiot would withhold supply and not raise the price of the good being sold, its simple economics that most high schoolers understand, let alone people with business degrees.
- spudnic, on 10/12/2007, -1/+20$10 is more than $0.
I really doubt that is why they have none in stock. - Elranzer, on 10/12/2007, -8/+26DeMatteo is probably just bitter that he can't find one.
- DBiz, on 10/12/2007, -3/+19A lot of people thought the Wii would sell this well, it's just that the focus was on the PS3 and its capabilities and the following 'failure' of its launch rather than the little monster Nintendo possessed.
Not to take anything away from either company, but there were a LOT of people who thought the Wii would be this hot. - maledin, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15Same here... The last time I played mine was the week Wario Ware came out.
The Wii is a great concept and all, but without (good) games, it's nothing more than an expensive pointing device.
We need more games, Nintendo! - gharding, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14I haven't played mine in like a month. Suckers.
- BakedGoods, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9GameStop barely makes money off of anything new. That explains their big 'pre-played' push. Honestly though, *not* selling Wii's is ridiculous. Any product that can barely stay on the shelves for more than a day is a product worth selling. Period.
- cwshea, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Yes, we have Wiis. Look at them! No...Don't touch. Bad gamer. BAD!
- Tallon29, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Retailers never make much money on consoles or other exclusive consumer electronics (such as ipods). They do, however, make massive profits on accessories (especially cables) and warranties/service plans. The console is just a way to get you in the door.
- r81984, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8A month of shortages and you conclude Nintendo is purposely ***** you over. Do realize its in Nintedo's best interest to sell Wii's instead of paying to have them in storage for a month? For every extra Wii in the market, there is a higher demand for games which means more interest from developers and more profit for Nintendo/higher stock for Nintendo.
Do you have any source material or articles about their stock prices and artificial demand bubbles?
If not then just shut up and wait for their production to catch up. - seanalltogether, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Maybe people have misunderstood goldentofu's point by modding him down. It took Nintendo 5 years to sell 20 million gamecubes, about 4 million every 12 months. They reached that 4 million mark in 4 months with the Wii while still remaining sold out! With the high cost of setting up manufacturing facilities, theres no way they could have dreamed the need to more than triple the production output of the gamecube.
- VeganG, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6"I swear to God."
So did the nun, when she couldn't find one. - aywwts4, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Its called google and a quick copy paste, no memorization required. Sorry for the told you so at the end, I found my own comment and I couldn't resist. I should have left it out.
- EelfinnTy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5+1 for mrstupid7 I've been playing Godfather: Blackhand edition every day since I bought it. The motion controls for fighting and finishing moves are pretty sweet.
- ArekRashan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6You are not the consumer. You are one consumer.
- tuxidomasx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5yea, but how many fingers am i holding up?
- dclowd9901, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4"I saw a nun looking for a wii in best buy this weekend. I swear to God."
The irony of that statement is delicious. - rockchops, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5They say that holding your Wii can cause unrepairable damage to the kidneys.
- kapsar, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8@wiibuntu
He's just not dumb for that, Nintendo hasn't increased the price at all. If they did, then yes he's right about them trying to make more money. - linksdeity, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I've been calling places around all day today trying to locate a Wii. The best bet I have is Best Buy, who says they may have them in a week.
My brother, who works ate a Gamecrazy, says he hasn't gotten a new shippment of Wiis in what may be well over a month, and the other local Gamecrazy's are suffering from the same shortage.
It doesn't matter what anyone says, because the bottom line is I can't find one, and I am the consumer. - seneyr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4They probably under produced since no one was sure how well the system was going to sell. Also, you said there weren't shortages of 360's at this point. Did you miss the news that Nintendo hit 6 million units in 4 months? The 360 has sold somewhere around 9 million in over a year. You think the shortages might be due to actual demand?
- liah, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I was lucky and stumbled upon one in stock at a Wal-Mart here in Ontario a few months back... When I came in, there were 5 on the shelf. We were in the store for about, oh, 10 minutes? By the time we left, they were gone. Glad I got mine, though, it's great. :)
- ThePet, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Get Trauma Center: Second Opinion. Serious fun.
- r81984, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7Wii's production has a set capability and demand has exceded that capability. There may be parts, but there is not enough machines to put them together. A productions capability can only go faster if you either cut quality or enlarge the system by buying new equipment. I'm sure you would not want your Wii to have the same crappy quality as the PS3.
Also, Nintendo has a huge production capability and this high demand will not last, so its cheaper for Nintendo to keep the lines running 24/7 and have some shortages then to buy a new factory and then running into the problem of having surpluses and unused new equipment in the future.
Just wait a few weeks and you will get one, what do you expect when you have the cheapest/best system ever made? - grumpyrain, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I think the success of Wii probably caught Nintendo off guard as much as it did the rest of the industry and they are struggling to meet the unanticipated demand.
- jpbleuu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2i don't play mine too often either. but i really don't have that much time to sit down and play video games. hell i've had mine since february and i'm still not done with zelda.
- NoSpaceForRent, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Sometimes you see a headline and you can't help but wait for the trolls to come out. "We're not holding back our Wiis" That's troll gold. I can't wait for someone to take advantage of that.
- Mrstupid7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Get Godfather: Blackhand edition. It's a decent gta clone with some cool leveling up abilities.
- EelfinnTy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Most games so far imho have only been worth renting. RedSteel and Elebits are both good rentals. You can beat them both in a week or so. If your looking for a good game try Godfather: Blackhand Edition.
- Goken, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I don't understand the big deal about the Wii. I've had mine for a couple of months and I am not impresssed. Sure I have Zelda and haven't beaten it yet but what happens when I do? What other games are out there for the Wii? Nothing. Zip. Nada. The people that can't get wii's now should be considered lucky because by the time they get one there may actually be good games out for it.
- ibeetle, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3An extremely good friend of mine is the Assistant Manager of a medium sized GameStop. Pam tells me she receives shipments of Wii's every week. Sometimes 2 or 3 shipments a week. However, these shipments are only 2 or 3 maybe 4 units each. At best she considers her self lucky if she gets a weekly total or 9 or 10 Wii's.
There are 6 GameStop/EB Games in a 10 mile radius of me. If that number of 10 a week is true for all of those stores that is 60 units.
There are 2 Target stores in my area. For the past 3 or 4 Sundays they have had about 30 Wii's per store to sell. 2 stores 30 each. That is 60 Wii game systems.
GameStop/EB Games are getting the same amount. It is just GS/EBG are spread out over 6 stores so it seems they are getting fewer. When in fact they are getting the same amount; about 60 units per area market.
GS/EBG are putting the systems out on the shelf the day they receive them; where as big box retailers are holding all there weekly received shipments for one day. Sunday; the day the ad circulars come out.
There is no Nintendo anti-GameStop conspiracy. - unloud, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5People die. Other people die in unintelligent ways. Get over it and stop acting all holier-than-thou.
- JangoFett, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yeah, I rarely play with the Wii these days. However, my roommate who loves everything Nintendo, plays it all the time.
- ibeetle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@eelfinnty
Definitely rent any Wii game before buying.
I rented Sonic. Thank goodness I did. 20 minutes into it I was like; Can I turn off this motion sensor, and just use the buttons like a real game controller? - MillenniumX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Maybe Nintendo isn't holding back their normal manufacturing but they sure as hell have to be avoiding ramping it up."
Actually, they're known to be building at least one new manufacturing plant. - jeepnut24, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I just wish I could find one... :(
- V1ncent, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wii want it. Now.
- sexycommando, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1yea i was being sarcastic in my last comment too. but thanks for proving my point.
- Goken, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Dude, I feel your pain. I was going to do the exact same thing when I saw six nintendo Wiis. But I decided that would not be fair to the people that have waited for this console.
- allenb, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5"sheesh, foreigners have NO sense of humor."
Foreigners. Brilliant.
There are Americans, and there are foreigners.
You're clearly well travelled and world-aware. - RMoore08, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Its ridiculous... i Went to 3 walmarts, toys r us, EB games, circuit city, best buy and not 1 had a single wii in stock....its so bad..
- Goken, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1wait so you sold your wii but kept Zelda? You do know you will have to start over from the beginning right?
