- sterling1989, on 10/12/2007, -16/+150You have to hand it to Nintendo. This is yet another example of Nintendo going the extra mile for gameplay and their fans.
To them its worth it to pay extra so one of the greatest shooters of all time is available to play on their new console. That is pretty cool. - jeromeerome, on 10/12/2007, -7/+112I hope they succeed in obtaining the license to sell GoldenEye on the Wii's Virtual Console. This game would easily sell millions of copies again just like the original Super Mario Bros. will once released.
I first bought my N64 for Goldeneye and Zelda OOT. Both sucked up countless hours of my college days. Four player deathmatches of Goldeneye until 3AM quickly became the norm. I don't think my friends and I had played a single video game that much up to that point. Come on Reggie... bring back 007 for nostalgia sake! - Shmoo, on 10/12/2007, -9/+68@ sterling1989
"You have to hand it to Nintendo. This is yet another example of Nintendo going the extra mile for gameplay and their fans. To them its worth it to pay extra so one of the greatest shooters of all time is available to play on their new console. That is pretty cool."
I think that's a bit naive. Nintendo is going through the extra effort because the game was popular in its day and they believe it will sell particularly well. They wouldn't try to make the game available if they didn't think they'd make a profit. - mecole21, on 10/12/2007, -2/+49"who put the grenade in the toilet?"
I still remember my mom being confused after I yelled that. - Nezzari, on 10/12/2007, -14/+64Frankly, I think there is a better chance of Goldeneye appearing on Xbox Live Arcade. Nintendo has to go through Microsoft and Activision/EA. Microsoft just needs to get EA or Activision to publish it.
In a perfect world, it would appear on both the Wii's virtual console and Xbox Live Arcade. - Jchen1986, on 10/12/2007, -7/+53Give me goldeneye or give me death!!!!!!!
- drlha, on 10/12/2007, -5/+38Well for it to appear on Live Arcade they would also have to port the game to the Xbox. The Wii VC has an N64 emulator already built in, so all they would need is access to the ROM to run Goldeneye.
- mrmcgoo, on 10/12/2007, -5/+36I love Goldeneye, having played it hours upon hours eight or nine years ago. But having played it recently again I must say it hasn't aged well gameplay-wise. While playing round of Slappers' Only, my friends and I were begging for another analog stick.
- vmerc, on 10/12/2007, -6/+37@RichG13
Explain to me how Nine Inch Nails figures in to this. - cambrown99, on 10/12/2007, -2/+31Since all three platform owners have a stake in Goldeneye (Nintendo as publisher, MS/Rare as developer, and Sony/MGM as owner of Bond), the only real solution I can see is for a 'Goldeneye truce' and put this up on all three consoles simulaneously. Everyone would make a ton of money and ultimately the gamers would win by having one of the all-time great games available.
- sampson123, on 10/12/2007, -0/+25Yeah without nostalgia the game is pretty bad by todays standards.
- Elranzer, on 10/12/2007, -8/+31Rare owns nothing to this game, which means Microsoft owns nothing. Rare was just the developer, Nintendo was the publisher, and the publisher owns everything. The beef is between Nintendo, Activision (new Bond games), and the owners of the Bond intellectual property.
Nintendo owns the publishing rights to the N64 game. Selling it on Virtual Console is still selling the same N64 version, which they have the rights for. I'm sure they're able to do this. - sdrawkcaB, on 10/12/2007, -11/+33Hell's Yeah! While they're at it they should REALLY get Perfect Dark as well! IMO it was better than Goldeneye simply for customizability.
If online multiplayer came out...wow - Nezzari, on 10/12/2007, -14/+32Bury this
- chaosmachine, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18it helps a lot if you use the 'solitaire' control layout instead of the default 'honey' layout.
- Soapdish, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16I forget which control style it was, but you could play with essentially the same thing as two joysticks.
movement (with strafing): c-buttons.
aiming/looking: joystick.
I admit that it isn't quite as good as two analogue sticks, but it gave me a good upperhand on my friends.
EDIT: Seems chaosmachine beat me to it. - NewChar, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16Agreed, I wrote the same in a previous digg post regarding Goldeneye. Graphics, gameplay, and controls-wise it hasn't aged gracefully. Tried playing it and Perfect Dark this summer and they're just not fun like they used to be.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+17I guess it'd be nice if they got Golden Eye.
But Nintendo clearly stated they will not put any added content in VC games, which sadly means NO ONLINE.
MS has the right idea with Live Arcade, people want something new out of these old games to justify a second purchase. - jeromeerome, on 10/12/2007, -8/+20wrong reply. mod down.
- Zipp425, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15whoa, your right.
I forgot that it totally has the legacy controls going on. - Klarth, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13Explain why HD matters with a nine-year-aged game with extremely dated graphics.
- ThndrShk2k, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14Once Goldeneye is available, all that Nintendo needs is to make the VC simulate multiplayer through Wi-Fi, and alot of customers will be coming.
- nipterink, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13that would be the first console war worth fighting in.
- MasterFunk, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11The really odd thing about Goldeneye is that rights for the game seem to be all over the place. Rare/Microsoft, Nintendo, and EA all own some part of the rights puzzle. The thing I see most likely happening is a release on Xbox 360 Arcade and the Wii VC simultaneously and at the same price as to not compete with each other. This would be great for gamers everywhere but this would mean a lot of work for a mutiplatform game. I just hope both Nintendo and Microsoft walk into the deals truly for customer and to try to get this classic game onto their console, and not so they gain full rights to it.
- pagani07v2, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10i have to say this is probably the best idea. Having Goldeneye on the Wii only is not going to be a system seller (it is still cheaper to go out and buy an N64 with 4 controllers and goldeneye, its around $60), so to give it to all three systems would be if not ruthless business, at least a selfless thing for all three companies. And it would give everyone the chance to be frustrated when their opponent gets an RCP-90 and they are stuck with the Destovei
- cypher35, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10I hate it when two companies who are now competitors have to fight over an old IP. The consumer always loses.
Kinda reminds me of the whole Batman '60s tv show. Know why it's not out on dvd yet? 'Cause the DC comic label is owned by Warner Bros., and FOX produced the original show. - sampson123, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8So Microsoft should just give away something they have to Nintendo because they don't feel threatened by them?
I'm not a threat to Microsoft, can I get the rights to Halo? - codyman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9This goes to show the power GoldenEye had on the gaming industry... I mean, personally this is what got me into FPS games and the hours I spent with the (back then) crazy ability to play with four of your friends... it was truly unforgettable and yes, in todays terms, the graphics suck but let me tell you what, I still would play it...
- Justizzle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9You know you went right for the RCP-90 and camped on the upper level... maybe even made your way over to the hallway for the Automatic Shotgun.
Personally, I loved the Library level, Stack and whatever the lower level was called (I have NO clue why I can't remember it... O.o ) with Remote Mines.
A good magician never reveals their tricks (I'm talking about mid-air detonation here), and that's why I would never lose a single game of Remote Mines!
To all the Perfect Dark haters... why? Secondary modes on guns, better crosshairs, a friggin Alien in multiplayer (or Jo with an Alien head!), the RCP-120, classic stages, new stages, simulants, customizable soundtrack, challenges, teams, need I go on? Goldeneye is definitely a cult classic, but Perfect Dark is Goldeneye on steroids... and crack, just for that extra boost. Oh yeah, combat boosts too!
I would pay as much as I had to to get Goldeneye, but I would pay double that for Perfect Dark. - wileybass, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Rare is still making Diddy Kong Racing for the DS, so anythng can happen.
- riah, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7You mean Perfect Dark? It was also a good title, but it wasn't Goldeneye.
- UGM2099, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Goldeneye is easily worth 2000 Wii points to me.
- UGM2099, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Proximity mines in the complex, map off, License to kill mode.
- teknopagan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Even better - Slappers Only with Golden Gun mode on. There was very little better than hiding under the stairs in Stack and killing your buddies with a single chop to the ankle.
Also, what's all this about Remote Mines? Proximity Mines were totally better.
How many people played rock-paper-scissors (or got into frickin brawls) over who got to be Oddjob? - aynrand, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10It actually HAS support for two analog sticks.
Originally you had to use two controllers, but it's easy to setup on an emulator to work with modern gamepads (xbcd). - kuchino, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7I hope they get Donkey Kong Country while they at it for SNES
- sampson123, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8No it means Microsoft is willing to work with Nintendo as long as it doesn't feel it is directly competing with itself.
- FrankieB078, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6It's funny, if that actually panned out and Microsoft and Nintendo had somewhat of a good relationship with this kind of stuff, Sony could go down in flames big time.
- aspec, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8Seriously though? You think it would look good in HD? Try emulating it sometime, you might throw up. It doesn't matter to me which one publishes it, or if both do, I just want some online multiplayer goodness.
- ArmchairAthlete, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7I  RCP-90s. Boris!
- SLIPSTR3AM, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6For sure, it belongs on Wii's Virtual, no doubt, but I would even love to see it port to the DS, as that's the one system I own. I don't even like FPS' anymore, but I'd pick that one up easily, as long as the control mechanics aren't anything like Metroid Prime Hunters. I didn't like any of the settings in that one.
- o0joshua0o, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5It makes smart business sense for Microsoft to cut a deal with Nintendo on this one. Everyone profits.
- drummerman109, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5i call dibs on the first proximity mine deathmatch in The Complex :D
- andysrc, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6MS just wants to make money. But they have to weigh the pros and cons of making a deal with Nintendo to let them have Goldenye on the Wii VC.
Pros: Getting a cut of the action each time someone purchases it from VC.
Cons: How many people will not buy an Xbox because Goldeneye is available on VC.
Seems like the smart move would be to cut a deal. - marcus_r, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8Not to ***** on everyone's parade, but have you guys even sat down and tried to play GoldenEye recently?
...no?
You might be in for a shock, especially if you've grown accutomed to more recent shooters. I used to love GoldenEye too... - anillop, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Uh don't you mean that this is just a case of Nintendo going that extra mile to make some money off what they consider a sure thing. I'm not knocking Nintendo cuz I think its a great idea but lets be realistic and not attribute this move to something they want to do just to make people happy.
- Mullinator, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I live in a house with 6 other guys, we all go to university. We have an N64 with Goldeneye and an Xbox with Halo 1&2. We actually play both Goldeneye multiplayer and singleplayer more than Halo 1&2 combined. That should give you an idea of how well Goldeneye has aged.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7@Alphateam
Pretty much every major emulator made for the PC for the old school games has support to allow you to expand multiplayer over the internet, it really shouldn't be all that difficult as long as the bandwidth is available and it shouldn't take too much bandwidth to keep it up and functional.
essentially it runs on both systems and input is given via the internet and fed straight into the controller inputs on both sides so both people see what the other person is doing even though both systems are running the games separately. It would be relatively easy actually. - Ayatollah, on 10/12/2007, -7/+10agreed...gameplay doesn't hold up, graphics are forgivable
now if they could implement 2 analog sticks that would be sweet - jwasko, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4that's not what Wiiconnect 24 is for...
