- tanxadillo, on 10/12/2007, -13/+55Her name is Sony!
- burke, on 10/12/2007, -1/+40I remember when Lionhead finally renamed 'project ego' to 'fable'. I was so disappointed. Project Ego was such a cool name, even if it didn't make sense.
"Revolution to be renamed this Thursday"
"this Thursday" just doesn't have quite as much of a ring to is as 'revolution'. - nights0223, on 10/12/2007, -5/+40Revolution has always just been a codename, just like the Dolphin (GameCube) and Ultra 64, but I agree they should just keep it as it is this time around.
- jayf, on 10/12/2007, -3/+32Does this mean the revolution won't be televised?
Seriously though, it's a shame. I got used to the codename so much I forgot it was one. - cyrix, on 10/12/2007, -22/+51Just for the simple fact you referenced Family Guy you get a digg, multiple digg's in fact thanks to the multi click glitch :p
While I will get negative diggs. - Elranzer, on 10/12/2007, -2/+24"Why would they do this?! "
Project VR32 >> Virtual Boy
Project Reality >> Ultra 64 >> Nintendo 64
Project Dolphin >> Starcube >> Gamecube
Project Atlantis >> Gameboy Advance
Project Nitro >> Nintendo DS
(Project) Revolution >> ??
Answer: Because they always rename their codenamed projects. - drwtsn32, on 10/12/2007, -4/+26My prediction: Nintendodecahedron
- dnder, on 10/12/2007, -3/+24I guess nobody understands the word "rumor"
- jayvdc, on 10/12/2007, -2/+20honestly soley based on the controller they should leave the name alone...
- grifta67, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17I agree with keeping it Revolution. If anything, they've built up a substantial brand awareness online with that name, which they'd lose a bit of by changing it.
If they do change it, my favorite idea I read awhile back is simply the NES 5. - fletchowns, on 10/12/2007, -8/+22We already knew they were going to change it. This is old news. Digg the story that comes out on Thursday when they release the new name, not this one.
- bobertfishbone, on 10/12/2007, -4/+18"Windows Longhorn getting a new name!"
Shocking, codenames in the tech business are here to stay. While it's disappointing, it's not at all unexpected. - Tobey, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15As long as they don't call it the Super Happy Fun Box, I'm cool.
- punchmonkey, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15OK, totally off topic here, but greenbox reminded me of a story of mine that's good for a chuckle.
A few years ago I wanted to come up with a play by email game site. I was going to set up stuff like tictactoe, scotland yard, risk, etc. by email. Of course the first step for this is to find a domain name ;-) So, I came up with gamemail.org. I didn't really talk to anyone about it for a few days, then I mentioned it to a guy I worked with.
"Hey, I just picked up a new domain for a site I'm working on, gamemail.org!"
"WHAT?!?!?!"
"Yeah, it's going to be great"
"WHAT?!?!?!?!?!?!?! GAY MAIL DOT ORG?!?!?!?!?!"
".... ..... oh.... crap."
And that was the end of that.
...
Not that there's anything wrong with that. - mogdor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Who cares about the name, I just want to see some freakin' GAMES for cryin out loud!
- drn666, on 10/12/2007, -4/+15"That giant black monstrosity in the corner.", or more concisely, "the fridge".
- shauncullen, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11The Nintendo 64's codename was Project Reality actually. It was originally renamed the ultra 64 before Nintendo ultimately changed the name to Nintendo 64.
- SatansMagicHat, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Dude, I would TOTALLY buy a Super Happy Fun Box. Who's with me?
- RockTheWall, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10Considering that they left DS, which was a codename, it's not impossible that they would leave the name Revolution, which I think would be both fitting and effective. However, "revolution", especially in marketing, has been done to death already. God knows how many products are called "a revolution" or "revolutionary" just because they're disposable razors with 3/4/5 blades. I could understand if Nintendo didn't want to be part of the cliche.
Still, my money's on Revolution. - drwiii, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7The DS started out as "iris". The SDK switched over to "nitro" in early 2004.
- greenbox, on 10/12/2007, -12/+18this sux. nintendo finally come out with a pretty cool name and all of a sudden they want to risk changing it to something that might suit a need that sounds more "familly friendly". the last thing i need to hear is everyone jokingly saying the new name in an annoying tone to mock nintendo users (just like with the "gay'mecube").
- SatansMagicHat, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Project Reality, Dolphin, Revolution. How awesome would it have been to say "Yeah, I play a Nintendo Reality"? That's just messing with people's heads, and Nintendo should do that a lot more. Watch the revolution's real name be The Nintendo Gamestation or something lame like that.
- afrazkhan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Well it is at least a _little_ unexpected. I'm actually quite surprised that they're changing the name. There have been a number of console codenames in the past which have been kept as the real names, and I was 90% convinced this would be one of them.
Nintendo Revolution not only sounds great -- and abbreviates nicely to Rev -- but it already has a lot of publicity associated with it (it has recognition) - also, the media seem to like it. I do hope that SatansMagicHat is wrong and it won't be called something silly like Gamestation. - skooma, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9they are gonna name it the "Oog Mitkaaak".
anyone? Aqua teen Hunger force? no....
*sigh* - artemus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Actually, the DS was originally called the "nitro".
- navster15, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10I really hope they stick with Revolution for the name. I can see it now, Rage Against the Machine songs playing in all their commercials and "Mario Guevara" shirts becoming the next must-have nerd chic item.
- Zeusandhera, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8Because whatever they change the name to, it will be called that forever!
- fliped, on 10/12/2007, -6/+111 Revolution = 360 degrees
- zaid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Project Atlantis = Gameboy Advance ... ala the guy uptop
- quamb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5powerglove/virtual boy - get over it, at least Nintendo try to create innovative ways to play games - and the rev, judging by those who have played it, seems to kick ass.
one could even applaud for Sony for testing the waters with different media formats - it's only good for us if companies have the balls to try new things. - artemus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6The power glove was made by Mattel, not Nintendo. And Nintendo has rarely ever gone wrong, except for the Virtual Boy, which was an ill-advised move from the start.
- VaporBro, on 10/26/2007, -0/+4You know what changed in the title between the Digg version and the actual article? The word RUMOR.
- ToadX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I agree also. Revolution was always a codename, but they've made this name so well known since they haven't decided to release an official name for their system for so long. I wouldn't mind if they just stuck with the name Revolution. It's not a bad name. If they're going to use a different name, I hope it doesn't suck.
- tsinbad, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Nintendo Type-R!
- nlatimer, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Revolution is a great name, I hope they keep it.
- haloevo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Damn.... "Revolution" is just so well known... I thought this was the final name.
- Elranzer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4"Dolphin" was pretty well known, too...
- geoboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Apparently I'm the only one who agrees with you. Submitters ought save their damn opinions for the comments, not in the friggin' main page story description. It just makes Digg look so incredibly unprofessional.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -11/+14I say they are changing names mainly so it sounds different to the XBox 360 (you know, revolution, revolving, 360 degrees, that sort of thing).
I personally like the sound of Revolution, but I guess they have their reasons. - durandal2005, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5I thought the article said that the codename for the DS was actually "Nitro"?
- Elranzer, on 10/12/2007, -6/+9As oppossed to the Super Happy DRM Box (PS3) ??
- SecretSanta, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7hmmm....nintendo cs2 mx R3 extreme
- Autrix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It's a codename so we don't know what they're talking about when they say "Revolution"
Shhhhhhhhhh - eqisow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3They could pull an apple and just go with 5th gen NES... as long as it's not iNES. :|
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4quote by Alkaiser on the article's forum -
"Anyway, I cast my vote for GameParallelogram. Nobody says "parallelogram" outside of elementary math class, and it would be totally fun to hear the Japanese ads for it."
LMAO!!! - nights0223, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5the codename was xbox, they decided to keep it.
- EviLiu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Revolution isn't that well known. There's zero mainstream press about it. Ask your mother what the latest nintendo is called. She'll say Gamecube, or... xbox or something.
- m.sandstorm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Yes Nintendo has made some mistakes, but show me a company that hasn't. People thought the DS was gonna fail now look at it now. It's straight up pwning the competion.
- tiuk, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I remember when it was actually X shaped. I've asked people a few times over the years if they remember that, and nobody seems to. I thought the giant black block that it turned into was a huge step back.
